So you know those days when your significant other wants to take you out for the day. Not sure we're to just out.... So we have a drive up round Rivington did some shopping in Horwich and ended up here for just after lunch.
And am I glad. We walked in through the hall did the whole track and trace thing then straight up to the bar to be greated by the most down to earth landlady. The other half was driving so he was on pop but lucky me I get to taste the wine!! She was really knowledgeable about her stock and instantly recommended a red wine, that was beautiful may I just had.. Started on a large glass, I may have ended up buying a bottle 😁 So our tabs open we take a seat to then be served by the wonderful amelia who floats around the pub making sure all the customers have exactly what they need, so polite, very professional, making sure everyone is safe but equally having a good time. I noticed she was talking to a lot of the customers by name, must be nice for the locals to have somewhere they can get a decent conversation. Then the food came out and we wasn't disappointed. The pate was outstanding. Plated up beautifully, my only minor complaint was not enough toast for the amount of pate I got, but that was no hastle and I was served another piece pretty much straight away. My partner had the Stilton mushrooms. Again presented beautifully and well alls I can say was his plate was completely empty so they must have been good ☺️ Then to the mains. THAT STEAK!! And THE CHIPS!! Cooked to perfection just how we ordered them. And chips properly cooked and clearly home made. And the sauces were beautiful!! And absolutely 0 complaints about the portion sizes. Infact I had some of mine wrapped up to bring home. And again absolutely no issues. The young lad helping serve the food took it away no problem and had the chefs wrap it up for me. And to my surprise I got it back in the shape of a peacock. Just shows how much care and attention All of the staff have. Even the landlady came over later on to make sure we had enjoyed everything. Everybody was lovely. The pub had such a relaxed homely feel to it. And all for less than £65!! Thank you so much again to the whole team. You made our little day out very special and memorable. We will deffinatly be back!!

Me and my good lady called in yesterday by shear accident because of a detour trying to get to Rivington Lake for a walk. If it wasn't for the detour we would never have come across this lovely pub because we live South Manchester. We visited Friday middle afternoon and the pub is lovely and quaint inside with various little snug rooms. The pub is spotlessly clean throughout. The older and younger gentlemen who were serving behind the bar were very friendly and sociable. The two cask ales that they had on were as good as it gets just superb beers, The clientele including regulars were friendly too. One regular in particular goes out to Geoff who we befriended who was also into fell-walking etc he made us both feel at home. We will definitely return and have food on our next visit to the area.

We have been visiting this pub for a very long time and always loved everything about it, until now. We have a baby with a milk allergy and she's now at the age where she likes to be included on meals out, so we asked was there anything on the menu she could have. Firstly we were advised the chef would come out to speak to us, after waiting 20mins nobody came so my husband went to ask which is when the barmaid we had originally spoken to, came to our table instead. I asked would it be possible to give us a baby bowl with simply some cut up chicken, veg and a few chips (we have had this made for us in several other pubs no problem). She went to the kitchen and quickly came back saying they were "struggling for veg" so she couldn't have that but they can offer salad(later mine and husbands meal came out with veg). Baby has no teeth so we politely declined and asked for beans instead. She came back a 2nd time and said they could make beer battered chicken to which again, we politely declined and said chicken breast is okay. Then she came back a 3rd time to let us know they couldn't make mine and my husbands meal and we would have to pick something else, again we politely agreed to her suggestion no problem. So, meals came out and they had ignored our request and sent baby beer battered chicken, so I sent it back as this is not what we asked for. They came back out with it again insisiting we did ask for this, so at this point I asked for a refund on that meal and said I would feed baby something else. Then they came back out AGAIN with the meal, having stripped the chicken of its batter. I sent it back again reiterating I had asked for a refund. This is when the chef/owner came bounding over and gave us a mouthful, making me and my children feel VERY uncomfortable and upset. I would just like to add, this was my first venture out of the house after a very frightening week in hospital, we drove out to our "happy place" to try and forget the worries and cheer us up. I am trying to keep stress levels down but this lady actually drove me to tears and made me feel even worse than before. So thanks for that. You have lost some loyal customers over a very simple request.

Very disappointed with the quality of the food. Hardly any meat / steak in the pie, Yorkshire wrap was dry and did not appear to be homemade. Burger was basic and the coleslaw was shop bought and very low quality. Very poor value for money. No garnish or any attempt to make the meals special or attractive. The chips were okay though!

A group of us were on a long walk and called in here for a drink and a bite to eat. It seems to have been really improved over the time since our last visit and we had a great time.

Inside the pub is very cosy indeed and you can choose from a few different small rooms.

They have a great range of beers and it isn’t an expensive place.

the service was friendly enough and we decided to take our drinks outside as it was a nice day. A couple of us got something to eat and it was very good indeed. We met the chef afterwards and he was a really friendly chap who seem to know his stuff.

We visited the Bay Horse on 22 April for a family meal. We had booked a specific table which
an arrival was occupied. Our alternative offering was a converted sewing machine table hardly big enough for 2 to eat ! We complained and were moved to our requested table, the issue blamed on a member of staff not present. We ordered food and waited 40 minutes at which point my husband went to ask where it was. We were told it was being plated up. We all had fish and chips (£12.95 per portion) . Mine was a very small piece and all were over cooked! It was served in a gastro pub manner ,ie peas in a tiny pot, . Gastro pub it is not! The female staff, in particular, are sullen and were seen behind the bar on mobile phones!! They were not quick to serve at the bar! We do feel they might benefit from some hospitality training! Not a single welcoming smile to be seen!
We cannot recommend, although the pub and beer garden are lovely! If this method of managing continues l can't see the present managers being there very long. Sadly, we will not be returning!

We were part of a funeral wake party and it was our very first visit to the Bay Horse. The drinks were promptly served by very pleasant staff and they laid on an amazingly good buffet lunch for around 30 of us. The Bay Horse is an old style pub with plenty of atmosphere. Quite dark inside. The toilets are a little old fashioned but are very clean. It was certainly worth a trip out of Chorley to find this place. We will return.

Booked the “clock” room for my wife’s 60th birthday. There was 19 of us. All had starters which arrived piping hot and tasty. No complaints. Most had a Sunday roast which was a plateful. My lamb was juicy and tender. Creamy mash, coli cheese, etc and loads of tasty gravy and mahoosive Yorkshire pudding. A couple had the fish and chips and they said it was really tasty. No one was disappointed with their grub. 19 mains all brought out more or less at the same time and piping hot was a feat in itself. Well done chef.
The staff were all friendly and efficient. My choice of beverage is cider and was Thatchers Gold, one of my favourites.
A cracking little pub with great food.
Thanks to Sam and the gang for giving the better half a great 60th birthday.

We didn’t book in advance but, as it was just the two of us, we decided to try our luck. We were lucky as, when we arrived, the front room was empty but the rest was packed & everyone seemed to be eating.
The bar staff were very pleasant as we got our drinks before sitting down to look at the menu. The chalkboard always has several specials, as well.
As we sat there the room filled quickly with no less than five dogs accompanying the various people.
We knew beforehand it is extremely popular with walkers and their dogs but we didn’t expect so many in the evening. Luckily, as I went to order our food I spotted a table free in another part of the pub so we moved. I like dogs & have had them all my life but I don’t like them sniffing around me when I’m eating.
Our food arrived around 20 minutes after ordering and was nice and hot. I had the burger with Italian sauce which was very nice. It came with spiced wedges - also very good.
My partner had the scampi with proper chips, mushy peas & tartare sauce. The scampi was tasty but very light in colour & could’ve done with another half a minute, but it was busy.
All in all it was good with the added bonus of a pint of decent cask ale.
