The hotel reopened in September after a serious fire. The hotel is set in the centre of the historic market town of Clitheroe. The Swan & Royal a former coaching Inn dating back to the 1830's. In its early years as a hostelry, it boast guests both famous and some say infamous, in the local area and throughout the country. You can stay in rooms named after a selection of the most interesting of these people. During the day it is the ideal place to rest tired legs after walking round the market or the wide range of individual shops Clitheroe has to offer. At night it is a little more lively being in the centre of the town and it is also the centre of socialising. Weekends do get particularly lively with a disco till 1am of a Friday and Saturday evening.

Detailed Reviews
Very friendly staff, great food very reasonably priced. My husband and I felt it was the best dining affordable experience we had found in quite a long time. Everything was perfect. The portions were really generous and well presented. We enjoyed a really lovely lunch. We were made to feel welcome straight away by the lady behind the bar who was charming. The dining area was also spotless and it made a nice change to enjoy a nice meal and feel welcomed by the business. We will return.

We stayed 23 Sept. to 28 Sept. so that we could visit our grandson without disrupting their work pattern. Having driven up from Cornwall that day we were made to feel very welcome and dined in on two nights with our grandson and his girlfriend. Excellent food, generous portions and sensible prices. We stayed in the Sir Frank Whittle room which we found very comfortable. Thank you Terry & Carol for a lovely long weekend. We very much hope that we can stay with you at some future date. Mike & Paddy.

Arriving on the Sunday, we were greeted with a warm and friendly member of staff who politely checked us in and showed us up to our room. Our room, named ‘Frank Whittle’ had a very romantic four poster bed with a beautiful view of Clitheroe Castle. It was a wonderful nights sleep and only wished we’d booked it for the week. We had chosen to stay somewhere in the heart of Clitheroe as we had heard it was a lovely little town with plenty of things to do - the town did not disappoint.
I cannot thank Terry and the staff enough for the hospitality they provided for us (the full English in the morning was something I won’t be forgetting any time soon). It is definitely a place I will be visiting again and would highly recommend it to anyone wishing to stay.

Was disappointed when staying at swan and royal bathroom was dirty and old . We stayed in the Miss Whiplash room and the toilet was dirty round seat as where areas of the room which hadn't seen a hoover in weeks. The bed was clean but the room was so small we had to move things around in the room to access the dressing table. The breakfast was lovely and so was the lady that served us who seemed to be the overworked as she was not only the waitress, but was the hotel cleaner and was servicing the rooms as well.
We ate in the pub on the first night. It was steak night, but we were told they had no steaks including steak pie as they were expecting a large pre-booked party. The food we had was okay. We saw no sign of a large party so asked the barman where the large party was that were having steaks only to told there was no large party only a table of four and the the real reason we couldn't have steaks or steak pies was that the chef was off ill and they hadn't ordered any.
Would I stay there again, in all honesty probably not.

We was in Clitheroe doing a Treasure Trail and when we had finished it we decided to call into The Swan and Royal pub for a drink. After a two hour walking trail the pint of Kopperberg went down a treat. Whilst in there we thought we would get a bite to eat as well.
The staff were really lovely and friendly, the man behind the bar told us the pie my Husband had ordered wasn’t available so he opted for the beef and onion hot baguette instead and a refund for the difference in meal prices was settled straightaway. I had the cajun chicken baguette. Both meals were piping hot and the baguettes came with chips and salad.
Really lovely food, lovely staff what more could you want. I would highly recommend this pub if you are ever visiting Clitheroe and we will definitely call in again x

We weren’t the easiest customers, not knowing the wine menu or any drinks we wanted. However Nicole was the most loveliest member of staff I have experienced in a long time. Confident, lovely & professional!
Great member of staff. Thankyou Nicole for your customer service

My husband and I stopped off for lunch here on the way home from a trip over to Newcastle.
We hadn’t got our dog with us , so we were able to try this pub.
As usual the menu was what you expect of British pub food but we thought that we would try their specials as usually this involves a bit more care.
I had the spicy chicken burger.
On the positive note the chips that came with it were really good but the chicken was two thin, overcooked frozen strips wedged between 2 thick chunks of cheese on a soggy bottom half of a bun.
They did appear to be understaffed which may explain why nobody checked that everything was alright with the meal but the concept of this was awful.

My friend and I stayed at the Swan and Royal for three nights. The room was characterful with lovely comfy beds plus a couple of chairs to sit on. Ensuite clean and plenty big enough. We had breakfast each morning, plus we ate in on two nights. The food was tasty with large portions. The best thing about this inn is the staff, who were friendly and helpful. We thoroughly recommend this as a place to stay if visiting Clitheroe.

barryrunner2015 asked a question Dec 2018
Greater Manchester, United Kingdom5 contributions1 helpful voteI was enquiring if any of your rooms are dog-friendly.
Thank you.
Hi
Unfortunatley due to inconsiderate owners we no longer allow dogs.
Oh sorry, didn't see the question till after your visit. Hope you found a hairdresser.
Hi
Really sorry but the only availability we have for that evening is 2 single rooms.
Hi
Yes we do have a small car park. It is quite secluded but we have never had any problems on it.
Thank you for the enquiry, we were closed briefly some 5 years ago as a result of a fire but we are fully open now. I was not aware of this information on the trip advisor web site but I will rectify this and thank you for bringing the matter to our attention.
