Stayed at the Royal Oak with my husband for my 40th birthday treat. The Friday night date night is amazing value for money, and includes a bottle of Prosecco on arrival, 3 course dinner with a bottle of house wine, an overnight stay and breakfast, all for £150. With no spend limit on your dinner it essentially means the nights accommodation is almost free!
We arrived just before 4pm, checked in and were straight the way impressed with the room. The food was amazing at both dinner and breakfast and nothing was too much trouble for the staff.
If I had to have a criticism it would be that the room was really hot throughout the night.
Thank you so much for a wonderful stay, we will definitely visit the Royal Oak again in the near future!

Just returned from two days at The Royal Oak, staying for a family wedding at nearby Whatton House.
The rooms are large and spotless, sound proofing between them could be better.
All the staff are wonderful and very well organised.
The restaurant food very good and breakfast is the best bar none!
Recommend without exception will stay again.

Stayed for one night, it’s a lovely pub with 12 rooms to the rear of the property, all accessed from the car parking area and on ground floor level.
The rooms are well appointed and comfortable with a modern bathroom and lovely walk in shower. Our only niggle was that the room was advertised as having an extra large double bed and we had a king sized not a superking sized. It was also very hot in the room overnight even though we opened the windows, and the heavy duvet was too much.
We ate in the restaurant and had a delicious meal with friendly and attentive staff who provided a great service even during the current Covid-19 restrictions. Breakfast was also tasty and plentiful.
We would return if in the location again.

We booked for our anniversary to eat at the Royal Oak last week. Because they were busy we were forced to take a very early booking (5.30pm). We thought we would eat around 6pm so accepted the time as a last minute thing.
However at no point was it mentioned that the kitchen didn’t really open properly until 6.30pm. We sat for a few minutes choosing our food from the menu. When the waitress arrived and we ordered we were told we could not have what we wanted as it was too early. There were four choices I believe, of the pub lunch variety, none of which appealed.
We chose as best we could but this was not fine dining. By the time we got to the desert stage it was after half past six. I decided to go a la carte at this late stage as apparently the kitchen was now fully open.
However again I was told I could not have what I wanted despite others in the restaurant now being offered the full menu. I said I would pay extra to go away from the set daytime menu. Again I was told this was against the rules and I could not. Absolutely ridiculous!
My wife chose the cheesecake and I had nothing. The cheesecake was the size of a cannon ball and really quite bland. The fish cake and the chicken kebab we were forced to have were passable at best but quite greasy and gave us both indigestion.
We won’t eat here again. What was meant to be a decent meal to celebrate a special occasion was not. It was average pub grub and poor service from the management team. The waitresses themselves were very pleasant but their hands were tied by the managers approach and beyond this the food was not up to standard. When I am paying hard earned cash for a professional to cook for me I expect it to be better than home cooked food. This was not. Poor all round.

Before setting off on a journey to Leeds from Oxfordshire and having discovered this hotel and bar/ restaurant in a book The Extra Mile l telephoned to see if they were open on Wednesday 18th (this was before the ban on Friday) and they said they were and said we would arrive for a lunch.
We were the only table in the dining area but warmly welcomed.
The food was absolutely delicious and plentiful as described in the book.
We were so appreciative of their service atmosphere and food that we will return in the future when this virus passed and we are allowed frredom of movement.
I really hope that this place survives in this most difficult crisis.
Once again my heartfelt thanks

Just excellent.
The staff are really friendly and polite, they were very accommodating of some additional requirements I had.
Very conscientious too, initially I booked 5 nights, then booked an additional 2 before I had checked in, and they were thoughtful enough to give me the same room for my whole stay and give me a bigger room than the one I booked because I was staying for a prolonged period.
I had some evening meals in the restaurant and breakfast each morning and the food is also excellent. The quality is superb and all the food was very tasty and fairly priced.
I highly recommend The Royal Oak and hope I can return soon.

We had booked here for an overnight stay at the end of our holiday near Droitwich in a lovely barn cottage, as a treat. We were not disappointed!
It was about halfway from holiday cottage to home, so perfect and glad we chose The Royal Oak as opposed to others we had looked at.
We checked in about 4pm and were very warmly greeted by a lovely lady, Phoebe? Got the key to our room, 4, and were very impressed indeed with the style of the room. Clean, comfortable and well equipped, a lovely bathroom with nice toiletries.
We had booked a table for diner about 7ish and again, very pleasant and friendly staff waiting on.
The food was really stunning and flavoursome, my fish and chips were perfect and Hubby's steak was also perfect.
Breakfast in the morning was really nice and the one and only really small gripe I had was the veggie sausage was one that had veggies in it! A wee bit Irish I know, but myself personally, do not really like these ones, much prefer the soya based ones... not mentioning any brands, but Paul Mcartney comes to mind!!!
All-in-all, what a lovely end to our holiday and we would definitely stay and eat in The Royal Oak if ever we pass this way again.

Let me start by saying I didn't actually manage to get to the Royal Oak to complete my stay, so cannot comment on the standard of accommodation.
However, that is the point. As I write this, East Midlands Airport, 3 miles from this hotel, is closed due to snow and the track day I was due to attend today at Donington Park nearby was cancelled yesterday. The Highways Agency has issued an amber alert and most of the local roads are reportedly under several cm of snow and the government has advised against all unnecessary travel.

I immediately notified the Royal Oak by email that unfortunately the event had been cancelled and that I would rebook when the track day was rearranged.
I was then informed that I had already paid for the two rooms and no refund would be available as it was their policy that at least 48 hours notice had to be given.
When I politely asked if there was any room for flexibility or discretion under these exceptional circumstances that were out of mine or anyone else's control, I was again told no.

I made a final plea to at least give us a credit note for when I could rebook or I would feel compelled to leave a review to express my dissatisfaction. I then received the following email directly from the owner of the hotel:
"You do not know me but I will not be bullied with the threat of a bad review. I am sorry you feel the need to do this. Our values are simply not aligned and I kindly ask that when you are in the area next you find alternative accommodation, hopefully one which allows guests to decide their own terms and conditions. I wish you luck."

I always believe the true measure of a business is how it responds when things go wrong, whether it's their fault or not. I will let you decide how to judge the Royal Oak's response for yourself, but the net result is they kept £205 of my money for a service nobody would have been able to make use of without going against government advice.

Stayed over for one night last night- 2 rooms , both our rooms were very clean and spacious - lovely comfortable bed and crisp bed linen. Plenty of clean towels and toiletries provided . Warm welcome from the owner. Breakfast lovely ( full English with good quality produce and I enjoyed the avocado and poached egg on toast, with a slice of bacon!) and again staff very friendly and attentive. Thank you, highly recommend and hope if we visit again to sample the evening meal ( the bar was very busy but again very friendly)

We stayed here for just the Saturday night - booked x2 rooms. Found The Royal Oak by just searching online for a place to stay near Donnington Park as our son was racing there over the weekend. Place looked lovely online and it really didn’t disappoint when we arrived there. Staff were exceptionally friendly from the moment we arrived. Rooms were very clean and airy and had everything that you could ask for. Tea and coffee, bottled water, ample towels, shower gel and shampoo, even a fan. It’s great how you can park directly outside the accommodation too. We are in the restaurant and again food was fantastic and they have a great drinks bar selection which we enjoyed sampling sat outside in the beer garden before dinner. Breakfast was fab in the morning- best avocado on toast I have ate! Great selection on menu. Can’t fault this place and it’s definitely going into my little notebook for when my son races at Donnington park again. Thanks to all the staff.
