Visited on 7th Aug, was very wary to start with, but we had nothing to worry about, from the moment we walked through the door till the time we left the service was excellent and the staff couldn't do enough for you, all the staff wore face visors and there were plenty of sanitising stations around the complex. you had to book a time (1 hr slots) for the pool to avoid overcrowding, you were only allowed 4 people or 1 'bubble' in the hydrotherapy pool at any one time. the cafe is now waitress service and the lunch is now served to you rather than buffet style as previous, the food was lovely. All rooms are Sealed after cleaning and we saw a lady in the gym using a fogging disinfectant machine. All in all a very relaxing and enjoyable day will definitely return

I was a little apprehensive about to champanys after lockdown but I was presently surprised that they had things in place which was brilliant. It was all clean and social distance is in place. Annette, Vina and Dale were very helpful. You have to book swimming pool time, fitness classes tho they did not have many on, also have to book breakfast, lunch and dinner on the day, but this was not a problem for us. Negatives are that they have removed the boiled eggs from breakfast menu they now charge you £5 for boiled eggs. Rooms are not cleaned unless requested which we understood due to social distancing and if you run out of towels, toilet paper, bottle of water etc you have to call reception, only one bottle of water per room. Used to be two. Room service has increased from £5 to £7 so be aware we also ordered cheese board one evening only came with 4 small crackers so £13 for that was not worth it. I dont know how they work that one out. Hence the reason for my 4 stars. But you live and learn. Having said this the vegan ice cream and the linguine are too die for. We really enjoyed our stay and we would return again.

My partner and I were supposed to be getting married on 1 August, which obviously didn’t happen. We then decided to take a trip to Champneys instead, and it was quite possibly the best stay we have ever had at the resort!

When we arrived, we were greeted by Abbie, Annette and Carol. They were all wearing protective visors and took the necessary precautions as per government guidance. We were extremely pleased to see these actions taking place. There are several sanitising stations all over the resort, and constant cleaning is taking place wherever you go. We could not have felt safer with everything that is going on.

The spa facilities were extremely clean with precaution measures in place that you have to book 45 minute slots to ensure that there is no overcrowding in the facility. This is managed very well. All locker keys are sanitised in a special formula after use. The staff were constantly cleaning door handles and pool handles. The towels for spa are left in your room for the period of your stay, so none of these are left in the spa area.

The rooms are cleaned to the highest standard with the latest fog sanitising equipment, which provides added reassurance. To try and avoid lack of contact in reception, anything you may need for your room, you call reception and they deliver this outside your door. Very efficient!

For meal times, there is no buffet service but you can choose your food from singular use menus that are handed to you when you sit at your table. The selection is fantastic and extensive, so still plenty of choices to choose from! The food tasted incredible and the portions are big!

My partner and I had two massages each, a Head in the Clouds, Full Body and Back Massage. We would like to say a personal thank you to Sophie as she was an incredible masseuse and made us relax incredibly!

We truly can not fault anything about this stay. We felt like royalty throughout the whole weekend and the whole team at Champneys did their utter best to ensure we were safe and looked after. We have in fact booked back to go again in two weeks as we were so impressed!

Thank you to The Champneys Springs team, you are all doing an incredible job!

I’m glad the last writer had a good time but it sounds like they went to a different resort from us!
Its impossible to keep somewhere like Springs properly clean. Lots of guests don’t bother with face masks or keeping 2m apart and it didn’t feel at all safe. The thalassotherapy pool is supposed to be 4 people maximum but we saw lots more than that in there and I even saw one man blow his nose into the water. It was disgusting.
The food is good but we spent ages waiting to be seated and for our food to arrive. Don’t even bother trying to get a coffee in the café, we waited 20 minutes and no one came. There are dirty plates and cups all over the place. Staff are stressed and if you have any questions, they’re bad tempered and give you the same old story about doing their best to look after your wellbeing while treating you the exact opposite. If you book an overnight stay, there’s no housekeeping and you’re told to phone a number that is never answered so you can’t even get some extra milk or a bottle of water.
There are hardly any exercise classes, hardly any beauty treatments (impossible to book them anyway), no talks or demonstrations, no sauna or steam and practically all the shopping is closed. We met some day guests who told us you are given one thin towel for the whole day and that is soaking wet after one swim and you can’t get another one unless you walk 5 minutes through the resort in your swimsuit and your miserable wet towel to get another one from reception. They were really fed up. Why can’t Champneys just wash towels at the safe temperature and provide a good supply to guests? To say it’s because of safety is nonsense, it’s penny pinching pure and simple. It makes the whole stay feel very low-budget.
It was a very, very disappointing stay and a total waste of money because we felt more stressed when we left than when we arrived because of all the difficulties. Champneys should be offering discounts to encourage guests back but I was horrified to see they have actually put their prices up since they reopened! What a way to reward loyal customers! Lots of customers are still trying to get refunds for previous cancellations so it’s clear the management only cares about their bottom line and not about their guests at all. Their reputation is in shreds and after our visit I can totally see why.
Save your money and spend the day at your local leisure centre instead. The facilities will be just as good and you won’t leave feeling ripped off.
You couldn't pay me to go back.

After returning to Champneys spa resorts again and again and for 16 years to date, and in the main at Champneys Springs (the jewel in the crown...because of the staff, location and purpose built comfort); we were finally rewarded for our loyalty. In the last couple of years a new incentive was introduced. That being after every 5th two night return voucher stay you are rewarded with your sixth stay free. Similarly, after every 11th day spa return voucher you receive a free day spa voucher. Well we reached this, quite easily given your return voucher lasts for 6 months and we tend to want to just keep returning way before it every expires or reverts to value only. We decided to give ourselves the best ever treat; two back to back return vouchers...a whole week for the price of 2 nights £149 each with our free 2 night voucher attached. Well what bliss. We were given a lovely room and welcomed like family. At every stage of our stay staff were engaging with us checking we were enjoying our stay. We had one slight issue with a towel rail not heating fully. Matt from housekeeping came within minutes and fixed it, Annette front office manager without hesitation moved our room, even though it wasn't needed, but her desire to give us the best guest experience meant she wanted us to have a room with a good memory! That memory was the fantastic maria the room attendant. She knew we had a room change, so to make up for the inconvenience, she spoke to us everyday ensuring we had everything we desired - thanks Maria. Thanks to Annette too, you are a superstar and lead a great front office and rooms team. But what was superb was to be greeted at dinner by Maggie Lennon the 'meet and greet, show round queen' (not every resort has a 'Maggie' I would recommend the position is rolled out over all resorts) and Carole the resort manager as maitre d'hotel. These ladies are devoted to their resort and go the extra mile again and again to make sure guests have a lovely seamless stay. Well done Champneys 'golden girls!' Needless to say, we bought return vouchers at check out, but we had to focus because we were so relaxed by leaving!!!

We had an overnight spa trip booked and arrived on Friday afternoon. The hotel itself is disappointing - it’s dated, shabby and dirty looking in places. There was a weird damp smell in the corridor outside our room.

The showers have been removed from the poolside, so you have to traipse all the way back to the changing room to shower in a cubicle before using the pool. The layout of the pool/spa is really awkward and inconvenient. For example, you have to go back to the changing room to use the steam room as there isn’t one in the main pool area, so you are constantly walking back and forth between steam, sauna and jacuzzi.

The rooms are ok, but only ok. The same for the spa. The restaurant was acceptable. For what is meant to be an upmarket spa experience, I would have been pretty annoyed to pay full price.

However, the staff were fantastic. Super helpful, pleasant and friendly. And given this was the weekend the hotel was closed unexpectedly due to the coronavirus and their jobs are presumably uncertain, they handled queries from guests in exemplary fashion without obfuscating. I genuinely hope that they retain their jobs as they were a credit to Champneys.

Rooms
The rooms are very dated and in need of a face lift. The TV is tiny for 2020. There appeared to be no temperature controls in the room either so could get hot or cold depending on the season. The bed was quite uncomfortable, the double standard room was simply 2 singles pushed together and both singles sunk an awful lot in the middle. There were lots of spiders in the room in various corners which indicated cleaning is not that through as they would have been easily scooped up when dusting. Our room (62) had an ugly water stain on the ceiling above the bed too!

Spa Features
It was not made clear that all the steam rooms and sauna would be shut. I can understand why given the current CV-19 circumstances but it would've been nice to have been made more clear. The main pool was ok. It had a little Jacuzzi which would fit about 5 nothing special. The hydro-therapy pool was limited to 7 people with a sign asking that guests only stay for one jet cycle of 10 minutes. This was not enforced by staff and customers would stay in there for sometimes an hour causing frustrations amongst other guests. The room was quite dated with rust around the metal work and many light bulbs out.

If I was a day guest I would've been very disappointed with what is effectively an average swimming pool. Save your pennies and go to your local leisure complex.

Food
The food was excellent (Apart from breakfast) We had a 40 minute wait for breakfast which is currently table service instead of the buffet. All we ordered was some fruit and some toast! The toast came out cold. This was included in our stay but if you paid specifically for breakfast I would've been fuming as some customers were.

The evening meal was lovely although slightly disappointing some items had an additional charge. The cheeseboard for example was £5 more for 3 small slices of cheese.

Lunch was also lovely and service was great!

Treatments
Both treatments were great and I couldn't fault them. Thanks to Katie for an amazing Mens grooming experience!

This review may be slightly unfair on the staff (who were excellent). But based on the overall stay, Springs could do with its very own well-being break. A tired resort in need of some revitalisation, TLC and much attention. The food is ace and the staff lovely. But service overall was very slow with long, confusing waits for drinks/snacks at the cafe. Shabbiness rules supreme, dust, spiders, old cobwebs, crumbs, dirty cups, drinks served in dirty glasses etc etc.

It feels as though the hotel is understaffed and if that’s the compromise to ensure such places can remain open during these COVID times then that’s completely understandable but even with lower staff numbers, the basics shouldn’t be ignored. Being attentive to clearing tables, offering menus, taking orders at the cafe, tidying food leftovers, cake crumbs etc.

Fitness wise, the gym is well equipped and the classes are enjoyable. But rusted fittings within the pool area, knackered looking gym equipment tarnish the experience. The whole place just feels in need of health-check and improvement program. A real shame

Although we enjoyed our stay, Champneys Springs needs a total refurb and rethink in order to compare itself to other spa resorts.

We got the 75% Vitality discount and paid about £160 for two nights in a superior room… that’s what I would say it’s worth.

The Good Bits:

Staff are generally all pleasant and helpful.

Superior rooms are spacious.

Grounds and setting are nice.

Food was good.

Treatments were nice.

Things That Need Improvement:

Beyond the reception area, the whole place needs to be refurbished and modernised. The carpets are tired. The bathrooms are akin to any Travelodge (basic shower over bath with white tiles). The treatment room was very basic and there were scuff marks over the walls, still using an old CD player to play spa music. The restaurant was dated and offered no real intimacy (tables in rows like a cafeteria).

The pool area is just like any standard health club and needs completely modernising. There are no, what I’d consider, hot tubs in the whole resort… staggering for a spa! There is a sort of ‘warm tub’ in the main pool with some jets, but it’s not a proper hot tub. There is a sauna and a steam room, just like any local health club would have, but none of the modern sensory spa experiences that you’d get from a high quality spa these days… Champneys need to invest and keep up with the times.

The dressing gowns are cheap white bath robes and the arms are too short for a man of average size… I’d expect more luxurious robes to be handed out. The towels are tiny, thin and scratchy… I’d expect nicely laundered, soft bath sheets (and for them to be stocked properly in the changing rooms!)

The TVs in the rooms are too small. The dinnerware isn’t top restaurant quality. The breakfast spread isn’t anywhere near big enough (better at Champneys Tring).

All in all, it’s a bit like staying at your local £50 a month health club for two nights, except the gym isn’t as good as you’d expect at your health club. For £160 for two nights with meals included, it’s fine, and in a nice relaxing setting. Champneys need to really think about what they’re trying to be and who they’re trying to compete with though. If we’d visited here in 1990 we probably would have been very impressed but, well, it’s not 1990. I cannot believe for one second that people pay the full price and feel happy with their experience… not if they’ve been to other modern spas.

I have just returned from three nights at Champneys Springs. This was my first trip away since Lockdown eased and as I had rarely been out in the last four months I was very apprehensive.
I have visited Springs many times in the last fifteen years so have very clear ideas of what my break there should be like and the fact that I knew it would be different because of COVID precautions also made me apprehensive.
Yes it was different! However it was an enjoyable and restful break and I felt very safe and comfortable. My temperature was taken on arrival which was reassuring. My room was immaculately clean which reassured me. All staff wore face visors and guests had to wear face masks as they were walking around which initially seemed strange but soon it felt normal.
Meals were different as the breakfast and lunchtime buffets have always been a big part of the attraction of Champneys . Now, of course it is all served. However the meals were excellent with a varied choice on the menu. After my first lunch I came out feeling as if I had eaten more that I would have done with the buffet- I certainly didn’t need to eat again till my evening meal. As someone left the table it was thoroughly cleaned and the seats were also well cleaned.
I went swimming every day and it really didn’t make any difference having to book a time- the swimming pool has been divided into fast and slow lanes which was good as I would have hated to slow down a fast swimmer.
Treatments are obviously limited because of COVID restrictions but the treatments I had were excellent and Staff were very attentive to cleaning and sanitising.

I came back feeling refreshed and also confident that everything that could have been done to make me safe had been done. I was worried about going into a different environment and also if all the new regulations would spoil my trip. I think Champneys have tried hard to be as safe as they can but also keep the ethos that is special to them.
I could relax without worrying about Coronavirus- it felt as if they had done all the worrying for me and I would recommend Champneys Springs to anyone for a relaxing break

The robes are one size but they are quite generously proportioned. My friends and I, who are "ladies of a certain age", never have a problem and I have seen lots of other larger ladies wearing them. Sure they would have a larger size if you asked.
