Built in 1906, with captivating views of the Leven Valley on the edge of the Yorkshire Moors, Crathorne Hall is at once grand and stately, warm and welcoming. Owned by the Dugdale family until 1977, the hall has played host to politicians, courted royalty and delighted socialites over the decades. Yet despite moving in stately circles, the house has stayed true to its roots as a place of entertainment and relaxation. Now it is yours to explore. Enjoy an overnight stay in one of our 37 bedrooms (17 of which have recently been refurbished following a £4 million restoration of the Hall's East Wing), plan your perfect day and take over the hotel for your wedding or inspire your delegates with our meeting facilities.

What a lovely setting, the approach to the hotel, grounds and historic building all set the scene for a great place to stay and overall it certainly is. I was visiting with my mother and elderly Labrador, since Handpicked Hotels made the super decision to allow canine guests it has made my holidays more pleasurable as I won’t put my old Labrador in kennels.

We stayed in Thornton room on the 1st floor, an allocated dog room, which was very well appointed with separate bath and shower and spacious enough for 2 adults and a Labrador. Standards were extremely high, having been fully refurbished in recent years, to the standard I have come to expect from handpicked hotels. The only thing that detracted from this room was it’s view, all the windows look out on to the service yard, there was no disturbance as it had internal double glazing, but for a guest travelling on leisure being able to relax in the room and look out on a view would have been better.

We dined in the bar on both evenings, with the dog at our feet, which is another great plus for me, my dog has dementia and sometimes becomes forgetful and disorientated so leaving her in the room isn’t always easy. Food was of a very high standard, lovely pork belly and fresh fish and chips, with overall great service from the bar team.

The weather was amazing for the 2 days which meant we were able to take breakfast alfresco on the patio, again with my dog, the first day service was prompt and snappy, but on day 2 it was clear a lot of people had come down to breakfast at once, along with what looked like some corporate guests on a time schedule, this led to breakfast service being quite elongated, this wasn’t really a problem to us as the leisure traveller, but you could see the team were under time pressure to deliver the service, with what appeared to be reception team also pitching in to try and speed things up. Whilst warm our breakfasts definitely weren’t as hot as those on the first morning.

There are some lovely woodland walks to enjoy in the grounds, this was extremely refreshing and cooling for my dog in the warm weather, plus some excellent wood artwork to admire whilst walking, despite being extensive the grounds are very well maintained and a credit to the hotel.

Overall a great historic hotel, with a nice friendly team, indeed the general manager made a point of coming to speak to us whilst we were out walking the dog, which is a very nice personal touch. I would recommend the hotel for both business and leisure, my only recommendation would be and if I was to stay in the future is that a room with a view is a must!

Thank you Nick for taking the time to write such a comprehensive review of your stay here at Crathorne Hall. It was great to meet you both also and I do hope you enjoyed your day trip out to the coast on what I remember was a glorious spring day here in the North East! I am pleased that you found the food and service to be of a good standard throughout your stay and our apologies for the slight delay on your second day's breakfast food arriving to your table. Whilst I do appreciate your understanding, this has since been followed up with our Kitchen and front of house team to improve efficiencies in this area. Unfortunately we did not have a room with a view available during your stay, however this has been duly noted and we will look to allocate one for you if available, should you decide to return to Crathorne in the future. Once again, thank you for your review and I do hope we have the opportunity to welcome you back soon.

Stayed with my husband to celebrate his 30th birthday on the escape to the country package at a cost of £300 which included early check in, overnight accommodation in an executive double, five course chefs tasting menu, breakfast and late checkout.

We stayed in the borrowby room which was absolutely stunning, spacious, well decorated with a balcony with seating area and had incredible views. We slept very well and heard very little if in fact any noise.

All the food was fantastic and tasted divine.

Our evening meal was faultless, the food, service and experience all wonderful. The atmosphere and ambience of the restaurant superb. Our server truly exceeded himself and made us feel very welcome. The food portions were very generous.

Breakfast likewise there was a huge choice of dishes and it was all presented beautifully and equally as tasted. Everything is served direct to the table including drinks. We found the service a little slow in parts especially when it came to getting additional drinks such as fruit juice. We asked for smoothies however unfortunately they never made their way out of the kitchen.

During our stay we did have a few issues which the lady on reception was more than happy to deal with on check out. She was so incredibly pleasant and helpful in her mannerisms and really did go above and beyond in dealing with them. Prior to our stay Katy was great in helping arrange an evening menu suitable to my husbands dietary requirements which was most appreciated.

The hotel and grounds are stunning and it is a building with a great amount of history to it. Overall we had a very enjoyable stay.

We have stayed at Crathorne Hall many times but this was the first time we did their Xmas package. We stayed Xmas Eve and Xmas Day with the full meal package.

The rooms were very comfortable and the staff very thoughtful in terms of really making small Xmas touches - we got Xmas stockings with goodies in our rooms and Santa came through the dining room for the children, although it was all still very discreet and classy.

The food was very good, a nice menu and served tastefully. We thoroughly enjoyed our two nights and would consider doing this again next year, it was lovely!

We booked online in advance for the beginning of December for our first visit to Crathorne and were contacted near the date to ask if we released it was the Santa Sunday, we didn’t and changed the date to the first Sunday in January 2020.
On arrival we parked in the carpark next to the hotel and the building is nice from outside especially the entrance to reception.
On entering the building we were asked if we were there for the wedding fair of which we weren’t and we were then directed to the restaurant.
Our drinks prefer was taken and we were given menus.
We selected two starters and two mains. Two plate followed by one beef and one pork loin.
The food is very basic and we had higher expectations.
The decor is very nice and this couldn’t be faulted.
We were subject to many visitors for the wedding tour coming into the dinning room to view the room through out our meal making it a very uncomfortable meal for us and like we were on show. I would of liked the hotel to have contacted us to be forewarned and asked if we would of minded or changed our date again.
On getting the bill they add a service charge which you then have the opinion to remove. It annoys me when places do this.
My review of two is based on the basic food and the experience. We will not return and would not recommend Crathorne Hall Hotel.

Thank you for your review. I am naturally very sorry to read that you did not find your recent Sunday lunch at Crathorne Hall to meet your expectations. Whilst your experience was not reflective of many other guests who dined on this particular Sunday, in relation to the Wedding Open Event, we will review this with the team to help minimise any potential impact from future events. With regards to the food quality, again I am sorry that this was not to your satisfaction. Whilst I do appreciate food can be very subjective, I know our Head Chef will consider alongside all our guest feedback and utilise as part of the ongoing review and monitoring of our food quality and offering. I do however hope you may still consider a return visit, so that we may have the opportunity to restore your confidence in our hotel.

The atmosphere and the service were great (lovely staff) and so to be fair were the starters and desserts. However the Sunday roast disappointed from parts being cold, poor Yorkshire puddings to the meat and gravy lacking real flavour. As we waited for our mains a couple at the next table were complaining about the same and refusing to eat theirs. This was off putting but to be fair after ours arrived we understood why. As I had purchased a voucher book ours was £10, had I paid £20 or £80 for the 4 meals I would have been upset too. Shame as the place and staff is lovely.

Thank you for taking time to review your Sunday lunch experience at Crathorne Hall. I was pleased to read that you have found the service provided by the team to be great, along with the starters and desserts. Our Sunday lunches are very popular here at Crathorne Hall and whilst your comments regarding the main courses are certainly not typical of our guest feedback, I have duly shared this with our Head Chef for further review with his team. We take our guest satisfaction very seriously here at Crathorne and therefore do hope that you will still consider returning to the hotel, to enable us restore your confidence in our Sunday Lunch offering.

Myself and my husband decided to try a take out Sunday lunch last weekend as we were working and we had heard good reviews about the Sunday lunch at Crathorne from friends who had dined in the restaurant and they were right. Very reasonably priced for either a one or two course, well packaged with your Yorkshire pudding and gravy in a separate box and tub which was great for me as I hate sloppy dinners where it's all together, the instructions on the front of the box to heat up were excellent and easy to follow. The meat was tender and tasty the vegetables a plenty and just the right crunch to them to keep all the flavour and plenty of gravy with a perfect Yorkshire Pudding, bonus that I had very little washing up to do ..have already ordered for ourselves and my parents to try this weekend 😁

Got married here 18 years ago and was in the area with kids so decided to drop in for Sunday lunch . Outside because of COVID restrictions but under a large tepee. All ate from the Sunday lunch menu , portions are large and good quality , had beef it was perfectly cooked . Kids had pork everyone enjoyed it and was good value for quality , adults 2 courses for £20 and kids £12 , kids portions as large as adults. Lovely place to eat with gorgeous grounds.

My husband and I went for Sunday lunch, Firstly waited ages for drinks to be served when they did arrive they came with the soup not a good start . The main dish arrived and was only warm so I sent it back , they brought two more Sunday lunches and they were no better veg was boring with no imagination. We spoke to restaurant manager and said how disappointing the food was and that we wouldn’t be paying for anything we had ,in all fairness he said that was fine and that we could return again and have a free meal but i don’t think we will return.

Thank you for your review. I am naturally saddened to read these comments and can only apologise if the food you were served did not meet your expectations. Similarly, I am sorry you also experienced a long delay for your drinks to be served. As a Red Star hotel, our quality and service is of great importance to myself and all the team here at Crathorne, therefore please be reassured that your feedback will be fully utilised in helping to ensure better consistency of this moving forward. I do hope you will still consider returning to Crathorne Hall, so that we may demonstrate that this was not typical of our usual standard.

Our room at Crathorne Hall could not be faulted. Unfortunately it was too cold and dismal to get the best out of our balcony with excellent countryside views.

The staff from start to finish put a great deal of effort into ensuring our every need was being met. They were all worthy of praise and although I have read complaints about a service charge being added I have to say that this amounted to less than I would normally have given for the service we received. Hence I'm afraid to say that in fact they lost out.

The dinner menu was a surprising change since there was plenty of choice. We were only staying one night but could have chosen from the same menu for three nights or more without getting bored. I send my compliments to the chef for giving such a range of choice, and at a range of prices which did not need to break the bank.

Breakfast ran well on the day we were there, but that doesn't mean it is always the same, having recently had that problem elsewhere when day one and two were with different staff and didn't run the same. But, I must not assume that Crathorne Hall has this problem because the signals were that it was a very well run establishment.

We chose this hotel due to their reviews and sadly we do not share the reviews it had received.
The building and setting itself was lovely but that was about it. Maybe it would have been different if it wasn’t just after covid lockdown, however I feel for a property like this the service always should be great. We only staid one night and the room was very spacious but slightly dated.
We decided to have dinner at the hotel that evening and sadly that was the most disappointing part of the trip. The steak wasn’t cooked right and upon complaining joking was changed. The waiter said he will tell the chef but when spending over 100for dinner that is quite disappointing. Maybe the team had a day off, however from that experience I would not recommend it as a 4* location

Thank you for taking time to review your stay at Crathorne Hall. I was sorry to read that your experience has not mirrored that of the majority of reviews and feedback we receive from guests and would like to personally apologise for the shortfalls you encountered, particularly in regards to your evening meal. I was pleased to read that your steak was however replaced by the team, upon being made aware of your dissatisfaction. Naturally I am saddened that you would not recommend the hotel to others and do hope that you may still consider a return visit, so that we may have the opportunity to demonstrate this was not typical of our usual standard.
