Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Absolutely amazing food! One of the best lunches I’ve ever had in a pub! The burgers were immense and the crispy chilli beef was the best I’ve ever tasted! Wonderful staff, very little waiting time and the homemade chips are out of this world! Can’t recommend highly enough!

We were visiting the Scarborough area recently and it was very quiet everywhere. So we went out looking for somewhere nice to eat in the car, and found exactly that one lunchtime at The Royal Oak, Moor Road, Near Filey. The food was excellent, hot and lots of it at a reasonable price. The bar area has a nice atmosphere with a log burner which was kept going by the lovely staff. It was so good we went back the following lunchtime and had something different off the menu. Give this place a try if you are in the area, you can spot it from the main road in your car.

Excellent meal, served quickly and politely. Excellent value for money and fabulous family atmosphere. The pub is well maintained, spotlessly clean. Catering for families of all ages and inclusive of well behaved dogs🥰 We'll visit again soon

We were in Filey one evening and failing to find anywhere to eat and headed out to the sticks where we came upon The Royal Oak. Unlike Filey this place was virtually empty and it had beer and it had food. We were grateful for that. But the fish served was very dry, and the "pie"was meat in a bowl with a massive crust and a mass of gravy. The back dining room was a bit shaby. More like cafe than restaurant. The price seemed excessive for the quality of food served. But when you are hungry and finally find somewhere where you can eat it means a lot.

Visited with my partner and 13 year old son. Very good menu choice and quality of food is fine in a very busy pub, especially at holiday times. The pub is very popular with families and therefore it has a high turnover, decor and furniture a little tired.

Called in for Dinner with my partner and wish id taken a wrong turn an missed it .my eyes lit up when i saw Lamb shank and mash on the specials board ,alas my joy was short lived the dish on arrival looked reasonable until i tried the mash .it was steaming hot and totally tasteless which possibly was an over add of hot water or maybe the whole dish had had a zap in a microwave .either way i had to blitz it with table salt to get any taste from it. Next the lamb again which was same temperature as the mash was as bland as you you could imagine lacked any seasoning and the amount of meat of the shank was frankly appaling and at £17.95 was adding insult to injury .i should have sent it back in all honesty but i would not have wanted a repeat of the same dish .the garden peas that were floating around in the bowl were also tasteless.for a chef to produce a plate of food as poorly as this is appaling.without doubt this is the worst lamb shank ive ever had.the staff were pleasant enough and i felt bad having to tell the young guy who cleared our table that rhe meal was dreadful but i can only be honest about my experience here .wouldnt dine here again .

Response from PSG LEISURE LIMITED, Owner at The Royal Oak Near Filey
Responded 26 Jul 2023
Hello, Firstly i would really like to exaggerate how much nicer and much more grateful we would be as a business if people were to raise problems with us so we at least have chance to rectify the issue As a team we’re actually really confused at your review, it seems you mainly wasn’t happy about the seasoning of the dish, but we feel that this is personal preference which is why we have salt and pepper for you to add your self if you wish, especially for people with diabetic issues / children we don’t like to add too much salt and feel the amount we add is enough, with the option for you to add more. Also i’m not sure about the adding water to the mash? We peel chop and boil potatoes every single day and then add butter and milk with slight seasoning, we don’t add any water. We also have mint sauce if you feel like you needed to add more if this was the issue, but again i feel like this is all down to personal preference. The lamb shanks we feel are a reasonable price for what we buy them for, lamb isn’t cheap and in regards to the size of it, im not sure if you are wanting us to pick bigger lambs for next time? From what i can recall personally, we have actually never had a complaint about our lamb shanks and we always get returning customers for them, and they seem to be pretty much a staple on our specials board because they are so popular. So we’re sorry you didn’t enjoy your lamb shank with us today, however we think they’re too good not to have on our menu (and so does everyone else!) and will definitely be keeping them on our specials board for now Many thanks for your custom The Royal Oak Team

Really nice quiet location. Nice spacious and clean cottage. We stayed here during a brass band weekend away and having the cottage to come back to during the mixed weather was really nice. Great hosts and very supportive when we had any questions.
