Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stayed at the Mitre 4 years ago and enjoyed it so much we returned in November 2023.The rooms are just as comfy and spotlessly clean and I very much like the location. It was nice to be remembered by Lesley who workings in the breakfast room and cleans the bedrooms. We had dinner in the bar one evening and it was very nice. The only thing that has changed is the breakfast. When we last stayed there was a menu and you could choose from a selection of hot food. Now it is just a self service breakfast. You have to make your own tea/coffee and the selection on the buffet is yogurt, fruit juice.cereals, pre wrapped croissants and pain au chocolate.Toast is served at the table.

My room and bathroom were clean , warm airy and very comfortable. The decor is attractive and modern. I would give the accomodation 4 stars. The covenience of the location depends on whether you are a light sleeper and whether you travel by car or train. Their is no car parking at the pub. The inn is practically on the platform of Knaresborough station however the first train goes by at 05.30. It is loud. I am told it is a goods train. The rooms are above the pub. The pub plays music. I was told the pub closes at 10 on weekdays and I did not hear much noise after that but the weekends may be different. One of the pleasures of going away for me is to have a nice breakfast. Here I feel the Mitre fell short. Even though it serves food during the day there was no cooked breakfast offered. A "continental breakfast " described help yourself, tea, instant coffee, cereal and pre-wrapped pastries. Toast and yoghurt was provided. I must give the breakfast experience 2 stars.

Had a very nice lunch at The Mitre today, under new management. Lovely Pizza and a free pint for me and a delicious burger for my friend. Great to have lovely pub and restaurant back in the area. Will 100% be back soon. Thanks to Karen and Chris the new managers for their warm welcome and hospitality.

We enjoyed our stay in Knaresborough, the town has some lovely shops to look around. We stayed at the Miter Inn, there is very little parking near by, we had to park in the long stay car park, it is about a 10 minute walk. Definitely bring luggage you can wheel! The room was clean and comfortable, albeit a little small. The staff in the bar were very welcoming and we enjoyed a few drinks. Breakfast was definitely a big let down, the lady who took our order was lovely but the breakfast was not… no fruit or yogurts and the room was set out for a christening, we felt in the way. The couple of tables set for breakfast were extremely close together. I had the porridge, this was very dry and I couldn’t eat it, thankfully there were a few boxes of cereal on a table with some orange juice, although the range was limited I found something. My husband had the cooked breakfast, he also felt this was a let down. It is for this reason we would not stay again.

My friend and I met up for lunch earlier this week. I was a little early and was shown to my table after ordering my drink, by a really lovely, warm and welcoming guy called John (I think). He brought menus and when my friend arrived he brought us wine and was just so attentive. The food was beautiful, really tasty. Portions are huge though, so be hungry. After our meal ‘John’ brought complimentary water with lemon . A nice touch. Will definitely visit again.

There’s a bearded skinny ginger man who works in this pub who was so unbelievably unpleasant and nasty to us. We had been exploring knaresborough and had stopped in The Mitre Inn for a quick drink as our train had been cancelled. As we sat deliberating over what we were going to order (which lasted about about 6 minutes), this ‘worker’ approached us using the most demeaning language to basically tell us we needed to get a drink or get out with a smirk on his face.We are all very aware that in order to enjoy a pub garden you need to order something. However this man was so rude, and on top of that, other tables around us told us of how he was unprofessional and rude to them, it made us stand up and leave, and order our drinks elsewhere. DO NOT COME HERE. Very glad he didn’t ruin our trip.

Me and my friends were sat in the empty beer garden waiting for our train debating whether to buy a drink, so as still deliberating we stayed sat until greeted by the assumed ‘manager’ (tall, slender, with light brown/ ginger hair) who comes asking if we are okay and if we were going to buy a drink to which we replied yes we probably should (as we were very aware that it is custom to buy a drink if we wanted to sit in a pub). He then began to become extremely rude and nasty snarkily remarking ‘yeh you should otherwise get out my beer garden then’. This hostile behaviour and overall aggression took us aback so we did not want to buy a drink at this establishment. Also, after the commotion as he began to walk away from us with such a smug look on his face the two tables next to us shouted calling him a c*nt telling us how he was also extremely rude to them as well - the two tables told us about how he nastily treated them although they were paying customers from the beginning! To end this - I am unsure if this was racially motivated or not as on top of us being attacked by him, the other two tables were made up of Americans and other ‘unstereotypical’ brits. So disappointed as we had such a nice time in Knaresborough today, such a disappointing end to a great day! For others who just want to stop for a drink please go to any other pub as there are friendlier staff who will actually make you feel welcome as opposed to uncomfortable and unwelcome.

We were greeted with a very warm yorkshire welcome from the manager and although we were there very early he took our belongings and these were in our room when we checked in The pub is modern and tasteful and very welcoming… the selection of drinks is vast - they serve Madri ( if you know you know) there is a large outdoor area which is bathed in sunshine … situated next to the quaint railway station ( not noisy ) and the beautiful church and 2 mins walk to the riverside and town centre The rooms are modern and airy and the bed/ pillows are really comfortable we had a great nights sleep The Yorkshire breakfast is served in a dedicated dining area with an open kitchen - amazing friendly service from a lovely lady ( yorkshire folk really are friendly )the biggest breakfast ever - locally sourced premium quality ingredients ( vegetarian breakfast amazing) even the toast is quality Overall a fabulous pub/hotel and one we will come back to Knaresborough really is a lovely town which is small in size but huge in beauty The riverside is idyllic Blind jacks pub is worth a visit too Lavender tea room does amazing fresh sandwiches and proper tea

We held a surprise birthday party for my wife at the Mitre Inn. John, Charmain and his team were superb; patient, knowledgeable and helpful throughout the planning and on the day. The venue was perfect, the food was excellent and all of the staff ensured the party was a great success. Their function room down stairs was ideal and the service throughout the party was a perfect balance, discreet but always there. Thank you so much, everyone who attended had only complimentary things to say about the whole event.
