Detailed Reviews
I stayed at the Mitre for 1 night from Monday 6th to Tuesday 7th of June in Knarsborough with my bike as I was challenging myself to do part of the National Byway between Bridlington & Knaresborough. I had asked beforehand if there was a safe area to store my bike which I was kindly informed there was.I got there pretty late, the hotel staff where friendly and helpful and showed me to where my bike was to be stored.
The room was beautiful, modern, spacious & comfortable & the hotel was right opposite the station and only a few minutes walk from all the main attractions of Knaresborough. Despite being right opposite the station, I didn’t find the train noise to be a problem, trains stop running by 11pm & only start again at 6am, if you think you will, request a room that is at the back of the hotel. In conclusion lovely hotel & pub, great location & will look to stay again sometime.

Friendly staff, well run, good food and comfy bed, would stay again lovely relaxing weekend away. Only problem was limited parking but a space was found just outside. Iron and ironing board in the room was good and complementary toiletries and refreshments were also in the room. Made to feel very welcome and all staff were very helpful.

I've stayed at The Mitre twice about three years ago and had a good experience so on a day trip I thought this was the place to go for a meal. We waited 40 minutes for it. Ok, it was freshly cooked but it was just a burger and chips and a battered butterfly chicken breast with salad (basic lettuce, tomato and onion) and chips, even though I asked for new potatoes. I can do a full Sunday dinner with freshly made Yorkshire Puddings in 40 minutes. My dinner was £12.50! There were about five staff in attendance with about 16 visitors and just two lots of those people were eating. We wanted to cancel our meal because we were going to miss our train. We were told they were just plating it up. That took too long in my opinion. I thought they would bring condiments. Nope! I had to go in and ask for them. We missed our train and had to wait for the next one. I should say here that we made a conservative estimate as to ordering, getting and eating our food on time to catch our train, but it wasn't an unreasonable one. There are lots of eateries in Knaresborough and I guess we chose one of the 'duff' ones but a saving grace is that my partner enjoyed his burger .... This is a review of the food only, not of a hotel stay.

We visited for a rare family meal out in the afternoon. The place is quaint cosy and clean and dogs were clearly welcomed.
HOWEVER, the wait for food was painful.
There only appeared to be 2 staff trying to run the food and bar.
They were clearly under pressure.
We ordered and almost an hour later there was no sign of any food - just cutlery after 40 minutes. This made us think the food was surely on the way by now. Sadly not. After prompting, and being told for the second time it would be just 10 minutes, one very tiny meal was served. It looked delicious to be fair but looked like a small child’s portion. We were told the rest of the food was on its way. No sign after 10 min minutes or even after 20. No apology. We felt fobbed off to be honest. When my son asked about the food once again it was “on its way”.
Eventually we had to leave due to time constraints, minus the rest of the order.
Granted we had a refund for the food that we hadn’t had, but it was a family meal where only one person got to eat after an hour and a half!
The apology was grudging and the staff bordered on rude. It wasn’t welcoming at all.
We felt so uncomfortable and we had wasted a very rare family afternoon together.
We were quite upset actually.

Response from MarketTownTaverns, Marketing Coordinator at The Mitre Inn
Responded 21 Jan 2020
Hi there BarUK68 Thank you for taking the time to contact us following your visit to The Mitre, although I am very sorry to learn of your experience. Whilst we do cook all our food to order using the freshest of ingredients, our food service times can be slightly longer but the wait you have described is certainly unacceptable. I'm also disappointed to learn of the service you subsequently received as The Mitre is often complimented on our friendly team. With this in mind, I would be grateful if you could email me at feedback@hb.im with the date and time of your visit, along with how many members were in your party. Kind regards Lauren Marketing Coordinator

Worst food I’ve been served in years, I could have saved myself the trouble & bought better fish & chips in Asda at 10% of the price from captain birds eye. No wonder pubs are going out of business...won’t be rushing back here as there are many better choices available in Knaresborough.

I know you have to be wary about reviews being genuine but I can only hope you believe this one. We spent 3 nights at The Mitre and enjoyed it very much. The lovely people running it were so friendly and so accommodating, nothing was too much trouble. I know it overlooks the railway so noise might be an issue for some people but we quite like trains so we loved the location but the welcome and service even more. I'm sorry I don't know all the names but thanks to Charmain, Adam, Lesley, Danny and Stuart and the others. Knaresborough itself is a lovely place to visit and we would definitely stay at The Mitre again. Phillip and Peter

We booked a room to stay overnight as we were going to a wedding nearby.
We planned to change into our wedding outfits in the room and head straight to the wedding ceremony. We had measured all our distances on google maps from place to place and had an itinerary for the day.
On arrival, we discovered that the road to the pub itself was closed, this being due to a big event in Knaresborough during the afternoon.
As we are not local, we didn't know anything about this. We had to park our car and walk half a mile from the car to the Mitre Inn whilst carrying all our clothes and luggage. We walked through hundreds of people to get to a really really crowded pub and bar.
Once inside, a woman there asked if we had booked a room and we said yes but we had to hurry a little as we had a wedding and were abit distressed about what was happening.
She said to us, 'if you don't let me go and get the card machine, you won't get anywhere!'
She then came back and we realised she was wanting us to pay immediately for the room at the bar. I needed wi fi to make the transaction and also have never stayed anywhere where you pay before even putting your luggage in the room?
I wasn't able to get any internet and she raised her voice saying 'put it in google! I'm trying to connect you to our wi fi!'. She was very agitated and seemed cross. There we stood still holding all our bags and clothes on coat hangers. She even reached over and started tapping my phone screen!
The woman then said 'It's the bed race here!' And we tried to explain that we didn't know anything about it.
She then said that we would not get to Harrogate as all the roads were closed and we couldn't get out before 6pm. She was rude, offhand and unhelpful. We felt very uncomfortable and she made us feel as if we were complete nuisances.
Going to Harrogate however is completely possible on a main road called the A1 🤔
We then said that we had better leave. It was clear that we were quite distressed and at this point I was not going to pay to stay in such a place anyway.
She then just turned her back on us and that was that.
So we walked back up the hill half a mile with our things to our car.
We missed our friends wedding ceremony as we had nowhere to change but thankfully, The Bridge Inn at Wetherby found us a lovely room and the staff were really helpful, kind and professional and we enjoyed a wedding evening.
They even offered us a room to change in if we didn't want to stay overnight.
Although we appreciate that 'events' happen, had we been informed at the time of booking that we would not be able to park at the venue, we could have either made alternative arrangements or arrived much earlier allowing more time to deal with the restrictions.
We were looking forward to a break and the wedding, especially having gone through recent trauma in our lives.
A little help, good manners, professionalism and human kindness goes a long way. It's not too much to ask.
So glad we didn't stay and wouldn't set foot within a mile of the place in future!

My room and bathroom were clean , warm airy and very comfortable. The decor is attractive and modern. I would give the accomodation 4 stars.
The covenience of the location depends on whether you are a light sleeper and whether you travel by car or train. Their is no car parking at the pub.
The inn is practically on the platform of Knaresborough station however the first train goes by at 05.30. It is loud. I am told it is a goods train. The rooms are above the pub. The pub plays music. I was told the pub closes at 10 on weekdays and I did not hear much noise after that but the weekends may be different.
One of the pleasures of going away for me is to have a nice breakfast. Here I feel the Mitre fell short. Even though it serves food during the day there was no cooked breakfast offered. A "continental breakfast " described help yourself, tea, instant coffee, cereal and pre-wrapped pastries. Toast and yoghurt was provided. I must give the breakfast experience 2 stars.

My friend and I met up for lunch earlier this week. I was a little early and was shown to my table after ordering my drink, by a really lovely, warm and welcoming guy called John (I think). He brought menus and when my friend arrived he brought us wine and was just so attentive. The food was beautiful, really tasty. Portions are huge though, so be hungry.
After our meal ‘John’ brought complimentary water with lemon . A nice touch. Will definitely visit again.

Had a special Sunday Lunch booked and they phoned 2 hours before to cancel as they had a private booking and our booking should never have been accepted. Had they phoned the day before then my family wouldn’t have had to travel the 70 miles this morning to attend as we were unable to get anything else booked elsewhere at such short notice. Utterly useless. Will NEVER book there again. So annoyed.

The Mitre has 2 allocated parking places close by which have to be requested and reserved in advance
I'm sorry I didn't look. I'm sure a phone call would help as the staff were brilliant.
