Reassuringly traditional. A fellow guest was overheard noting that it had “finesse”. The decor, food, service, and delightful gardens are all caught in a time warp in the very best way. Not the place for hipster trendiness, cool vibes or minimalist interiors. No “small plates” on the menu here. We stumbled across it twenty five years ago on a moorland hike and it doesn’t seem to have changed apart from the trees being taller. The same family has run the business since the 50s and their values and personal touch ensure a consistently warm and generously welcoming atmosphere. We had room 19 with a lovely view over the garden. A two minute walk in the other direction takes you straight out onto the moor. If you get your shoes dirty just leave them outside your room for (inclusive) cleaning.

The location, right on the edge of the North York Moors, makes this a wonderful retreat from the modern, frenetic world. It's quiet and peaceful and in August, the heather is spectacular. You can walk for hours on the moors (take a compass, it's easy to get lost even on a beautiful sunny day.)

The hotel has a large and beautifully maintained garden, both the formal rose garden and the garden beyond are a haven. At the far end of the garden is a lovely play area.

Nothing is too much trouble, for the people running this family owned hotel. From welcome to check out, they were considerate, friendly, accommodating and attentive. Our room (19) was overlooking the garden and very quiet and dark. No street lighting or sirens to disturb you here! The noisiest things are the pigeons in the morning. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom had a big bath and shower over with excellent water pressure and temperature. The toiletries are made specially for the hotel in Thailand and smell delicious. Lovely big, fluffy towels.
Afternoon tea was as splendid as last year - I have found nowhere in the whole of the UK that does better scones (and we like our cream teas!). They are crispy on the outside, and light as a feather on the inside.
Dinner was also delicious and the wine list is extensive.
Breakfast, -- the usual continental and then hot, cooked to order. The bacon was especially good.

There is a good range of outside seating, overlooking the rose garden and also a splendid, big lounge with comfortable sofas and chairs arranged such that different parties have comfortable areas to enjoy their chat and coffee / drinks.

This is a luxury hotel so it isn't cheap, and you get what you pay for. I hope this will become an annual visit for us. I'm looking forward to returning already.

We have just returned from a lovely day out on the North York Moors - the highlight was undoubtedly afternoon tea at Lastingham Grange. The gardens were beautiful, the food delicious and the host was very attentive and welcoming - with a great sense of humour! Quintessentially English. We will be visiting again very soon

Stopped here for afternoon tea. This was one of the options on a “red letter day” voucher susan had received . Situated on a picturesque village on the moors it was a great place to stop for refreshments. The hotel is traditional and solid with interesting decor, not a hipster in sight! As it was a pleasant day we took afternoon tea in the colourful garden terrace. Starting with a suitably garnished pimm’s and good quality tea we worked our way through tasty sandwiches and cakes. A most pleasant afternoon tea experience with friendly and efficient service.

After a long walk on the moors above Lastingham to see the flowering heather (stunning by the way and this was 3rd week August), we were hot, tired and thirsty. We called in at Lastingham Grange asking for afternoon tea. We were warmly welcomed and shown out to their idyllic garden behind the hotel. The scones were utterly delicious - crispy on the outside and feather light inside. Perfect for a cream tea. We had a vegan guest with us and it was no trouble for the kitchen to produce a vegan, gluten free scone and vegan spread. Wonderful service. The tea to drink was equally delicious - Yorkshire tea for some, and Earl Grey special blend for others. Having had such a good first visit, I would now like to go and stay. I have the feeling that we would be well looked after and well fed.

We walked across the moor from Hutton Le Hole and came across the Grange. Although we had walking boots on the receptionist was very welcoming and so we stayed for lunch.

We only had a sandwich but as this was the first time we had eaten out since lockdown it was very welcome. The rare beef sandwich was great and my wife's open prawn sandwich had some whopper prawns in it. All delicious.

As they were just getting used to the new way of working it was all a bit strange, but they could not have done more for us

We stayed at Lastingham Grange 23/06/23 we arrived mid afternoon & we’re met by one of the owners who was very polite & asked if we would like tea or coffee with a scone which we accepted we had it outside & enjoyed looking around the gardens. Our bedroom was very large with Kingsize bed very clean & well presented. We then went down for dinner which was very nice with a good wine list next morning we went out for a little walk & discovered the most wonderful walks all sign posted from the start of the North Yorkshire Moors this is a wonderful place for anyone to stay who likes long moorland walks. We then went in for breakfast which again was very nice & well presented with lots of fresh fruits practically anything anyone wanted was on the menu served personally by the owner we thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast. Some people comment it is old fashioned like old people’s home well I can assure you if you wish a nice place to stay with impeccable personal service & wish to do walking this place is very good & we will definitely be staying there again

Will return one evening 2as not enough - such a great place not many hotels left like this. The roast duck followed by rosemary Nd orange poached pear was sublime. The service was superb - low key and luxurious.

This is such a peaceful place where you can walk straight out onto the Moors. It is family run with wonderful service and genuine hospitality. Nothing is too much trouble, but it is quiet and unobtrusive. The public rooms and bedrooms are very comfortable in a traditional way, but all the nicer for it. And the food is delicious. We would definitely come back here.
