Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What a great place to stay. Beer was nice and staff were very friendly. The room was very clean and spacious. Located right in the centre of town in the market square. We will be back to explore more of the town. A weekend wasn't enough time to see it all.

Do not book unless you go into the pub itself and book. We booked through a Buy a Gift voucher to arrive and be told the old landlord is keeping the money from bookings and they have no record of any bookings so they couldn't honour our booking.

I booked a room at the Castle for 2 nights, 7 and 8 June 2023, using Booking.com. I want to warn other potential customers away, because of the rooms I was offered and because my experience suggests you will struggle to get a refund if there are problems. I booked a “superior” room with a courtyard view. I chose the back of the pub to avoid the risk of noise from rowdy pub patrons. On arrival, none of the staff could explain the parking rules on the square outside (answer: get a free leaflet from the Tourist Information Office - opposite the pub) and there was a delay booking me in as the IT wasn’t working. The room I had booked had been given to someone else and I was instead given room 5, called “The Station”, on the top floor (2 flights of stairs, past the smelly kitchen), and at the front. I didn’t end up staying so don’t know if it would have been noisy. The bathroom was big and had a nice view across the town square. That was the only good thing about the room. The bedroom should have shared the same view but there was scaffolding across its window and the blind was broken so I could not let more light in. My guess is that the décor was supposed to be “Victorian twee” but it was a messy mish-mash. It looked as if it had been recently painted, in parts anyway, but done badly. There were stains on the base of the bed, obvious as there was no vallance. The carpet was also stained, especially in the doorway. There was a frayed rug; I didn’t explore what it may have been hiding underneath. There was a small TV, and a settee which was hard and lumpy. I didn’t stay in the room because when I went out for a walk and came back the door lock was broken. I then had to stay in the room for over an hour while the pub found the manager (she’d knocked off) and she found the maintenance man, and they together couldn’t repair it. I was offered a different room, on the floor below and on the side of the building. I rejected it as soon as I saw inside as the window gave on to the alley between the pub and the next building so that the entire outlook was of a brick wall some 6 feet away. I told the manager I was going to leave, and the bonhomie she’d presented up to that point evaporated instantly. (I moved to the nearby, similarly-priced but rather cool and far nicer, boutique-y vibed Frenchgate Restaurant and Hotel, which has free onsite parking.) I left with the promise from her that the pub would provide a full refund, though she said she couldn’t do it immediately as the IT was still down. The pub then shrugged off all my attempts to get the refund. The owner ignored multiple emails and all my phone calls to the pub met the same response from staff - they promised they would “speak to the owner and sort it out but he’s not in at the moment” - and then nothing happened. My sense is that staff have been briefed by the owner on how he wants complaints to be perpetually ignored/deflected. (I have got my money back, but through my credit card company; Booking.com were as unwilling as the pub to refund me.) The manager I dealt with on the day, and the cook too, have both left the Castle since June. I suspect they might have a high staff turnover. Also, a look at Companies House records shows that what appears to be the owning company has not filed accounts for the last financial year and its status is marked as “active proposal to strike off”. I don’t think I’d have sent them any money had I known that before booking.

Arrived today having booked to stay 1 night to several guests trying to gain entry to the hotel. It became evident that the hotel was locked up and we were unable to contact the owners by phone. The shop next door informed us that the owners had allegedly gone into receivership/ liquidation and had left the premises on Thursday. This caused many upset people trying to find accommodation at the very last minute. I would strongly recommend that anyone booking or have booked a room to discuss options / refunds if appropriate. Can I also suggest that Tripadvisor notifies is clients accordingly. Many thanks indeed

The outside of the hotel needs painting as it lets down the Market Place. The Bar needs attention. Tking the route to the bedroom involves a journey through boxes of catering essentials and mops and buckets. The back door and banisters are in desperate need of claening. Breakfast was unpleasant. Try somewhere else.

Stayed at the castle tavern for 5 nights from 2nd June 2023. Check in was super friendly Paul showed us to our room called Brewery. Large room super clean and had everything need including extra pillows. Bathroom lovely and clean and included a bath 😍. Bar is lovely and everyone super friendly. Breakfast every morning was fantastic. Huge shout out to Phil the breakfast chef who accommodated my need for well done bacon and burnt toast without question 😋. We were out all day every day but enjoyed coming back each night to friendly faces and one or two beverages 🍺🍷. We will definitely book again next time we are in the area. Huge shout out to all who made us welcome. THANKS Rachel, Paul, Phil and barman Darren 😁

Called in on the off chance Mother's Day, made to feel very welcome by very friendly staff who said table was available. Ordered Sunday lunch which was beautiful, hot and tasty. Dessert was to die for. Would definitely recommend and hope to return one day to try main menu.

Lovely comfortable room and a fantastic breakfast. The owners and staff all made us feel very welcome and were excellent hosts. The bar serves locally brewed ales that were not only very tasty but also very reasonably priced. I would definitely recommend staying here for a visit to Richmond and the local area. We were going to the Georgian theatre which was just a 5 minute walk away. Thanks for a lovely stay.
