Located in the center of beautiful , historical Richmond ...Ideal for touring the Yorkshire Dales. Millgate House is a period Georgian House with a private walled garden which has been forty three years in the making and the winner of many awards both regionally and nationally. The house is furnished with period furniture, pictures and antiques. We have three rooms for bed and breakfast at £185 per night including breakfasts etc, minimum two nights stay. The house has been called an oasis in the North of England. The house and garden have been featured in magazines and on t v, over the last forty three years on many occasions. The garden is open to house guests at all times but no longer to the general public. We offer a unique experience.

We do not normally leave comments on Trip Advisor and imagine that there is already a lot about Millgate House and garden so will limit this to our own experience. Tim and Austin were wonderful hosts. We felt we were special guests, not B and B clients. An exceptional combination of friendliness and unusual (to say the least!) surroundings. The friendliness included lengthy conversations about the garden, the pictorial decorations, the clocks (all 50+ of them) and several of the hundreds of antiques, which grace every surface in the house. How refreshing NOT to have a television in our rooms (we had a sitting room as well as a bedroom and bathroom) and, instead, to have a good selection of books and CDs - allowing us further conversations around our tastes in reading and music.

We were delighted that you broke your rule and decided to submit a review...I know many of our guests don't like leaving reviews for a variety of reasons...they don'y want to share the secret, they don't like Trip Advisor etc etc...but we feel it is important to give feed back... Especially positive feed back...there is too much negativity in the world today...and praise, where earned, helps the world to be a better place. We have rarely had such positive, enthusiastic, observant guests...so it was not difficult to treat you like old friends. You were indeed VERY special guests. The email from your wife yesterday was one of the most detailed, appreciative emails of thanks we have ever received. An increasing number of our guests are equally enthusiastic about our lack of TVs! and "noise"...i e "background musak"... I suppose it says a lot that not only are we fully booked for Christmas 23 but we are already fully booked for Christmas 24 as well!!!! Thanks for your delightful feed back and your passionate enthusiasm about your experience here with us. And dont leave it another twenty years before you return again!

Imagine lying in a cozy bed looking out through a huge window as the first red traces in the sky announce the dawn and watch as the sun slowly climbs over the horizon. Wonderful beauty. Turn over for another 40 winks and then down to a breakfast described by Alan Titchmarsh as 'the Best Breakfast.' Delicious. A closer view from that window reveals a steep downslope which over the years the hosts, Tim and Oz have fashioned into one of the most admired gardens in Britain. Not at its best in November but as photographs show absolutely stunning for much of the year. Yet even in November, the view includes the rapids on the River Swale. Millgate House has internal beauty too. The hosts have assembled many treasures of paintings, silverware, and books- ancient and modern. The hosts appear to have knowledge that stretches from detailed local information to erudition over a whole range of topics including music, drama, literature, foreign travel- the list goes on. Above all ask for their restaurant recommendations. After 50 years of residence in Richmond, they can provide expert guidance. One recommendation that I dined at had a menu that would grace any restaurant. How often do you have hare on a menu? I hope to return frequently to the wonderful Millgate House and its delightful hosts.

Another outstanding review from an experienced world traveler… Thanks for your praise, enthusiasm and encouragement… it means a lot to us… Yes even though the garden has been put to bed there is still plenty of winter colour and the snowdrops are already showing… We hope to continue to give respite, refreshment and renewal in a currently crazy, angry world… Never has our garden inscription been more relevant… “We are a garden walled around Chosen and made peculiar ground A little spot enclosed by grace Out of the worlds wide wilderness” This reminds us daily as it hangs on the garden wall of the need for an oasis of peace and calm and rest … and nourishment. The essence of good hospitality.

My wife and I stayed for two nights in this amazing house and its well stocked south-facing garden. Our hosts were truly welcoming and gave us lots of recommendations of nearby places to visit along with tried and tested restaurants and pubs. Our bed was wonderfully soft and the room magnificent, overlooking the garden. The breakfast menu was superb and we only wish that we could have stayed for more days to simply try all the delicious dishes on offer. It was a lovely stay and highly recommended.

A stay at Millgate House never disappoints. We have been many times and simply love being immersed in its homely grandeur. Tim and Oz are convivial hosts. Breakfasts are delicious. For us Millgate House is the benchmark that we judge all other holiday accommodation by, consequently many fall far below the high bar Millgate House sets. We very much look forward to our next visit.

It’s well over ten years since we were cited Bed and Breakfast of the year by The Good Hotel Guide… it’s good to know that you like them feel we are still on target..your many return visits say it all… It’s so good to have your feed back and to know that you love the place almost as much as we do! Even the dogs are beginning to get along with each other these days!… sort of!!

The owners of Millgate House hosted a wonderful evening for my work colleagues and I early October this year. We thoroughly enjoyed the faultless dinner. The room where we ate, together with the atmosphere was amazing. Staff were extremely efficient and attentive, we were all made to feel at home. This place is definitely worth a visit. It's a gem hidden within Richmond. I would love to go back. Mrs. J Jarvis.

Millgate House is, without doubt, one of the most memorable places I have ever stayed! It is overflowing with history & interest & if beautiful antiques & / or gardens are your thing, you really need to spend a few days here. It is super central to Richmond, so a stone's throw from some lovely restaurants & shops, & also proves very easy access to the Yorkshire Dales. However, for me, above all of this, what sets Millgate House apart is its exceptionally generous proprietors, who are truly excellent at what they do & will make you (& your four-legged friend!) feel so welcome. I should also mention that their breakfast is spectacular! We will be recommending wholeheartedly to family & friends.

Thanks to you and other recent reviewers for the exceptionally generous, positive comments… It would seem reading these reviews that Millgate continues to be completely exceptional and outstanding… Not only because of the historic nature of the house with it town centre location …not only because of the antique collection… not only because of the national award winning garden… but above all else the warmth of the welcome … we still strive for the two fold goals… Be the best BE unique…. Hopefully reading these reviews we are on track! I suppose thirty years in the game helps… Few survive so long in the hospitality game… Having scaled down we are enjoying the more gentle pace… We look forward to meeting you again… perhaps with another whippet!!!

Despite being disrupted by Storm Babet, we had a lovely stay at Millgate House. You are really staying in the heart of their house and Austin and Tim are brilliant at making you feel perfectly at home. And what a house it is, full of fascinating artefacts and pictures. Breakfast, too, was perfectly cooked - delicious! All in all, our stay was a rare treat. Do go!

For our Silver Anniversary we wanted to go somewhere special. Having stayed at Millgate twice previously, I figured I wouldn’t disappointed. I wasn’t! We booked the “Garden Apartment”, which actually works as a self-catering room with all the facilities one needs. There’s a large sitting room with kitchen facilities, a huge bedroom with Super-King sized bed and bathroom with shower and cast-iron bath. Prior to our visit, whenever I wanted any help I received a prompt reply. On arrival we were met by Tim, who helped with our luggage and offered Tea (or a glass of wine, should you prefer!) and gave us a tour of the house. Millgate is a gem!! The antiquities, paintings, clocks, plants and other nicknacks really give a relaxing theme to it’s early 18th Century structure. As the owners Tim & Austin live in the property, they are skilled in making you feel like a part of the family rather than a guest! Nothing is too much trouble. The owners care about their guests, evident in how they continually replenish the tea tray with clean China and Silver. Breakfast is served in a large, bright room overlooking the garden with sunlight flooding in through the large windows which are opened on pleasant days. Breakfast is hard to beat. An offer of fruit, granola, yoghurt and honey to start, we were served Strawberries, Blueberries, Raspberries, Pomegranate seeds, Greengage, stewed plums, Banana and Prunes. Delicious!! There’s a choice of what you fancy next, we both had English Breakfast both days. Local sausages, dry cured bacon, mushrooms eggs (you choose how you want them!) and tomatoes with plenty of toast. There was a sprinkle of something I had not had before, with a slight cheesy, nutty taste (I have subsequently tracked it down to be Engevita, which are vegan yeast flakes. They are delicious as a seasoning!!!). Our room itself had stunning views onto the beautiful walled garden, where we spent a lot of our time looking through the Hostas, Pines, Roses and Clematis, to name but a few. The gardens are no longer open to the public due to the fact they are terraced and care is needed in some areas, but I saw this as a positive point, as we had the place to ourselves (apart from the odd friendly visit from Tim, Austin and the two Whippets!). If you are looking for minimalist, then this might not be for you. But if you enjoy a friendly atmosphere surrounded by intriguing artefacts and wonderful hosts then I implore you to give Millgate a try! It was hard to drag ourselves away, such is the friendly experience from Tim, Austin and their dedicated team. You certainly won’t be disappointed!!!
