Detailed Reviews
Millgate House is more than a B&B, it’s a legacy which makes you addicted to discovering the essence of this great Georgian townhouse. The essence really is the quality and authenticity of everything you encounter the minute the door opens. It is run by 2 highly experienced professionals who know what it takes to make a great stay. Stunning rooms all around are topped up by the most famous garden in Yorkshire, winner of several awards over the years and currently covered in hundreds of magic snowdrops. Breakfast is to die for and the owners are great coffee fanatics so you will be in safe hands if you like freshly roasted coffee aromas early in the mornings.
The beds are best quality and every single rooms screams history, heritage and pride. We have come here for many years now and Richmond town is simply magnificent. Cute shops, cobbled streets, superb river and the freshest air possible, not to mention castle remains over a 1000 years old. Currently working at a top London 5 star I could say I have seen it all over my 20 years career in hospitality but I dear you find better and more authentic service and human character anywhere else. Thumbs up!!! Try the other property they have in Italy too.S&L

Millgate House is an 18th century elegant townhouse located off the bustling market square of Richmond. On entering the rather unassuming front door you experience an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ moment stepping from one world into the next.
Leaving behind the hustle, bustle and stress of everyday life you find yourself immersed in world of calm. Jaw dropping lofty elegant rooms crammed with antiques, silver and artefacts from round the world lie before you. The silence being broken only by the gentle, rhythmic ticking and occasional chiming of the numerous long case clocks scattered round the house.
Hosts Tim and Oz the owners for the last 40 years welcome you to their home and immediately you are at ease. Our bedroom was huge with king size bed, easy chairs, more antiques and views over the award winning garden to the River Swale and countryside beyond.
The garden at Millgate has been part of the National Garden Scheme for 35 years and former RHS/Daily Mail national winner in 1995 with plaudits from experts and personalities alike. Planting is dense, varied and inspired where you can lose yourself for hours, just sit listening to birdsong and the sound of the tumbling waters of the Swale.
It goes without saying breakfast is superb served by the open floor to ceiling french window in the classic dining room.
We cannot wait to return to Millgate and enjoy the warm hospitality afforded by Tim and Oz, this really is a jewel in Yorkshire’s crown.

We have just spent a wonderful three nights at Millgate House. Nothing is too much trouble for Austin and Tim who are superb hosts, providing a wonderful welcome for us from the moment we arrived. After Tim had helped us upstairs with our luggage, tea was elegantly set out for us for us in the beautiful drawing room, where we marvelled at the fabulous collection of clocks and other antiques.
Our bedroom, number 2, had a super view over the renowned and beautiful garden and the Falls. The bed linen is of the highest standard and the room perfectly appointed; my husband particularly enjoyed his whisky night cap before we fell asleep to the sound of the river Swale.
Each morning we enjoyed an excellent breakfast served by Tim and a group of attentive. young helpers for whom nothing was too much trouble. Our room had been thoroughly serviced by the time we returned.
It is clear that a great deal of thought has gone into providing a relaxing experience for each guest and Millgate House is a perfect introduction for visitors to the historic town of Richmond and the Dales: such places are increasingly hard to find.
I cannot recommend Millgate House enough to people who enjoy the finer things in life. Tim and Austin have created such a relaxing ambience in their beautiful home. We will return!

Thanks for your wonderfully positive review...and to the previous reviewer equally so...there are too many nay sayers in the world. today...and unfortunately we occasionally catch one!!!! Most of our guests are like you fully aware of what we offer and prepared to be open with us if we fall short, rather than make a cowardly attack on a review. We have just had Claudia Hammond here as you saw. She was in ecstasy about the garden, being a passionate gardener herself. She like you found both the garden and the house so relaxing and was full. of positive energy. Sally Magnusson was equally positive about her stay earlier in. the week. It is encouraging that the winging nay sayers are in a small minority. We look forward to welcoming you in the future.

Millgate House is no ordinary B&B. Stepping in off the pavement is a bit of a 'Narnia' experience, with the narrow, dark hallway opening into a grand Georgian townhouse, filled with fine period furniture and eclectic art but which still retains a homely and country house feel. It is my go-to place when I need to book somewhere special and we have been returning for 14 years now. We stayed last weekend, on this occasion in Room 6, also known as the Garden Room. All of the rooms are remarkable but I have to say this could now be my favourite. Room 6 is in the basement of the house but damp and chilly it isn't. The door opens into a sitting room with a real fire which had been lit prior to our arrival. The Garden Room could be described as a suite and along with the sitting room, there is a kitchen area and a large bedroom with en-suite bathroom. There is also private access into the award-winning garden which even in February still holds charm with some early blossom, daffodils and snow drops. All of the beds at Millgate House are extremely comfortable and Room 6 was no exception and I could have gladly stayed in bed indefinitely but breakfast at Millgate House is always a good incentive to get out of bed. They do an excellent full English and other hot breakfast dishes but also a wide range of fresh fruit, nuts, yoghurts, cereals and juices, toast and croissants. Aside from the splendour and comfort of the house, the owners Tim and Austin are entertaining and fabulous hosts. There is fresh milk available and a selection of teas and coffee and biscuits in the rooms and also a small decanter of whiskey. If you are looking for somewhere special to stay, I am sure this will tick all your boxes.

Yes, it has been that long since my first stay there and I will keep going back as long I can. Why? Why travel 4-5 hours by car from London one way when there is so much choice around ? Maybe because every time I enter this sacred sanctuary it brings back a feeling of nostalgia and I leave energised and ready to face the hectic London where I work and live with my partner. She has only started visiting Millgate house few years ago but every time she comes back she feels the experience got stronger and more interesting. The garden is something that you might have seen in the movies but definitely not in real life. New plants and divine colours appear every year and being so tranquil it teleports you to a different dimension, almost far away from civilisation and human contact. I like that a lot as I run busy outlets in a top London hotel and the stress is beyond imagination. Yes I know good service when I see it and the hosts Tim and Austin are not just so genuine but perfectionists when it comes to customer service. The house is similar to an antique museum where every object has had its place for decades and unlikely they will ever move again. My wife keeps on bugging me every time we get back home asking when will I learn how to cook a traditional full English breakfast like Austin does. Well, probably I never will as it’s almost impossible to match someone’s skills who has been doing it for 30 years or so. The quality of the ingredients is top notch and I’m trying to compare it to any 5 star London hotel breakfast but sadly for the hotels ...there is no comparison. So I guess my wife will have to wait few more months for that special treat until we shall return. The rooms are full of charisma, character and impeccable taste which takes a life time to acquire. Comfortable high beds, paintings that tell a story, china from 1890 and a good night sleep is what to expect when staying here. Richmond itself is a unique town with stunning castle remains and one of the best water falls you will ever see in England but it just wouldn’t be the same without Millgate House. I have stayed in other B&Bs in Richmond and they were wonderful but just standard, non interesting and lacking some character, not leaving me anxious to return or extend my stay. Yes, there is plenty of choice around at cheaper prices but....I prefer to stay away from them as I want to leave Richmond thinking I stayed somewhere where I have learnt something and gave me the thirst to explore so many beautiful things that life has to offer us. So until next time I will try to perfect the art of cooking an English breakfast at the risk of disappointing my wife and being asked to fill up the car gas tank and go back to Millgate House where she will be wined and dined in style. Thank you for another 11 out of 10 stay. Xxx

WOW.... so no pressure! Thank you for this deeply appreciative review.... It means a lot coming from a couple who both work in hospitality in central London....with many years of experience. It is so encouraging to know that people can discern excellence. We love enthusiasm and passion as you know...it is reflected in the house, in our collections and in the garden.... It is great that some young people are as passionate as we are about what we are trying to achieve.... We look forward to welcoming you back many more times....twenty five years is a long time...we may even manage another twenty five!!!!!

The moment you step through the door of Millgate house you are transported back in time; surrounded by ticking clocks, antique trinkets and hundreds of fascinating old books and curios. Leave technology at the door, embrace the unique and tranquil atmosphere and lose yourself completely to find your headspace. We had the fortune of staying in the garden room, which had it's own living room with kitchenette and open fire. A perfect escape giving us some much needed time to reconnect ... and relax! We enjoyed walking straight from the door from our room through the beautiful garden and around the river - what a perfect situation! We loved the room so much we hurried back to light the fire and chill out to the stereo and fab collection of music available. No screens needed.
Breakfast was fresh, local, delicious and plentiful, with fruits, cereals and delicious home cooked hot food. We only left a few hours ago, but we are already working out when we can return! Thank you so much to Tim and Austin for a warm and wonderful stay. We will be back!

This is a brilliant and beautiful bolt hole . It is such a relaxed and perfect base from which to explore the Dales. The Award winning garden is an oasis of calm. There are fabulous views of the Castle in Richmond which is 750 years this year. Inside the antiques give a sense of depth and for a book worm it is the ideal place to take refuge.
Breakfast is a work of art, the choice of perfect fruits and the premium quality of the locally sourced food is prepared and presented so well. The owners are always keen to help you recharge your batteries and send you back to normality refreshed. Dogs are welcome and this has got to be a must when UK is the destination .

Our position remains unique, town centre location, with all the advantages this offers, restaurants on the doorstep, local walks, no need to use the car, with the added bonus of complete seclusion and privacy of a walled garden with only the sounds of the birds and the waterfalls to disturb you on the river side of the house. Added to this as you rightly say we have views of the Castle, the waterfalls, the hills and the garden. No wonder we remain at the top of the list for the town of Richmond. Our breakfast has never been called a work of art before...so this is a first! Delighted that you were able to recharge your batteries before re emerging into the hurly burly of the world. Oasis is probably the right word. You leave watered, refreshed and ready for the onward journey.

So happy to have found this unique, fascinating and most beautiful guest house. We stayed in the Garden Room with access onto the loveliest garden, which unfortunately, the wettest of weather prevented us from fully exploring.
Austin and Tim are wonderful, welcoming hosts whose attention to detail is second to none; even a decanter of whiskey in our joining sitting room where we enjoyed several relaxing hours reading and escaping the rain.
Breakfast was superbly cooked and taken in a gorgeous room overlooking the garden with views down the valley - it was a real treat to hear all(and there were quite a few) the clocks chiming. All in all, an unforgettable experience but one that we are intent on repeating - a stay of two nights is not long enough!

As soon as you walk through the front door of this beautiful Georgian home, with its unique location off the market place, you know you are in for a very special experience.
The genuine hospitality and personal service from Austin and Tim immediately ensure you feel welcome. Fresh flowers and an extensive collection of beautiful antiques, chiming clocks, paintings and books, about which the hosts are also very knowledgeable, create a special atmosphere and make this a truly exceptional place to stay.
Breakfast, in the exquisite dining room, is an experience to savour. Fresh fruits, followed by delicious, full of flavour, fresh local produce is cooked to perfection and served with homemade sourdough bread, homemade marmalade and perfect coffee.
Beautiful rooms, super comfortable beds and fine bed linen ensure an excellent night’s sleep; you can hear the soothing, timeless sound of waterfall in the distance and awake to birdsong from the garden. Whilst the views onto the garden, which has won a number of awards, and countryside beyond with fabulous morning skies, are a delight and make it worth leaving the shutters open.
An unbeatable experience to be repeated as often as possible! Thank you.

Also travelling as you do puts you in an even stronger position to know which are the very best places to stay. Thank you for highlighting some of the features which make Millgate so very special. Austin and Tim's elegant home and beautiful garden are a joy to be in and we felt privileged to be able to spend time there.
Both Austin and Tim are entertaining and engaging hosts and were generous in sharing their plant knowledge and suggesting nurseries to visit (Eggleston Hall is a must for plant lovers - thank you!). Our room had a breathtaking view over the garden and the countryside beyond, and was beautifully furnished. Thoughtful touches included crisp linens and a wee dram left out for us each evening. Our delicious breakfasts were served in the elegant dining room overlooking the garden and we were regularly entertained by the two lovable whippet scamps, Daisy and Nina (who, unknown to Austin and Tim, were dangerously close to being dog-napped).
Austin and Tim's Millgate House is one of the very best places to stay in the Yorkshire Dales, if not in the whole of the UK. Highly recommended.

Praise doesn't come much better than this! "Best in the Yorkshire Dales, if not in the whole of the UK."... Alan Titchmarsh said something very similar in a re run last week of Best British Back Gardens....he stayed with us whilst filming... and listed us in his top ten of choices. Pleased you didn't steal the dogs... Eggleston Hall is a complete treasure trove...we have sent more people off there today. We are lucky to have such wonderful views...someone remarked this morning at breakfast that places charging three times our prices often have no view or look onto parked cars!!!! Thanks for being such hugely appreciative guests...your enthusiasm was infectious.
