Detailed Reviews
We visited on a Tuesday night with a table of 8 (+ 1 baby) and were served by a great barman Danny. He was super friendly and hosted us perfectly for the evening. Great choice of food (including lots of vegan options) and quick service made it a really enjoyable evening. Quality of food was surprisingly good and great value for money. Would recommend!

Booked a table for two to have an evening meal.
Not sure why there was a 45 minute wait for food when the pub wasn’t even busy.
Blonde Bar man was annoying to say the least everyone was aware of his presence.
Food served was very nice, we have used this restaurant for many years but won’t be making a return visit any time soon.
50% off government insensitive to eat out didn’t make the visit any better!

Attended this pub today, staff very helpful, friendly and efficient.
Sadly since the last time I visited the food has changed. the Menu still appears to be the same but the food is different
I used to love the steak and ale pie. but now it has been reduced to a flat pastry enclosed patty filled with bland tasetless crap.
Mt wife use to enjoy the Lasagne but this has now become some what tasteless too.
Its a shame that Marstons has gone this way but never mind, we will exercise our rights and go somewhere else in the future

Thoroughly enjoyed our weekend at this interesting pub/ hotel. Fantastic value for money, good food and relaxing atmosphere. We enjoyed drinks in the garden and had a accessible ground floor room with original beams. We loved it.
Staff couldn't be more helpful, brilliant staff we grately appreciated their helpful, positive friendliness.

We booked for 2 nights. On arrival the room was chilly and the thermostat was locked. The room was surface clean but the toilet was badly stained due to lack of cleaning and the corners were grubby. It just lacked the attention. Overnight the room got cold (my wife slept with 2 coats over the bedding). We wanted croissants and good coffee for breakfast. The coffee was instant , make your own and the croissants "would be ready in 20 minutes" as they were frozen. We went elsewhere but ordered croissants and coffee for the next day. . We returned to the hotel late that evening and the room hadn't been serviced but that was ok ?, the room was again chilly and we survived!. We went in for breakfast and were told that the coffee was only instant and the croissants would be about 20 minutes. We went elsewhere for breakfast. The guy on duty credited us in full without being asked. We would have liked to enjoy our stay and tell you it was,a bargain. It didn't cost us a penny and it wasn't a bargain. Would we return. Well guess.

What a lovely welcome. The staff are so friendly at this place and not in that insipid way but in a relaxed and genuine manner. Helpful and chatty when checking in, ordering food and drink and having breakfast.
It’s not The Ritz - but at £45 for the two of us including a massive breakfast - it was fabulous value for money and just what we need to break a very long journey north.
The location is beautiful. The building is next to the canal and walks are easily accessed.
Would highly recommend.
PS Thanks to Carl and Billy for yummy breakfast and great service this morning.

I saw that the bar was stocked with a Brewdog IPA and so I asked if they had the alcohol free version as I really like that and find it most refreshing on a hot day. The bar maid was quite offhand and said there was no call for Alcohol free beers - I found this quite odd as I was stood infant of her asking for some. I suggested that this was a very good AF beer and that perhaps they could consider stocking it. Her colleague joined in at this point and told me that the pub had tried stocking it before and that no one wanted it. It's a chicken and egg situation because if it isn't there they won't sell any.
We had planned to come back with two friends and then 50% of our party would have been drinking AF beer all night but after this rude and dismissive reaction to my request we won't bother coming back.
The first job of good bar staff is to make the customer feel welcome - I felt distinctly unwelcome. We definitely got the cold shoulder for the rest of our time there

I took two elderly friends for dinner here last evening and were greeted and served by lovely staff. Our meals duly arrived and were all piping hot.
Sadly two people had bread and ‘butter’ with their food, but it wasn’t butter, it was margarine. We asked the very helpful waiter for proper butter and he went in search. When he returned he told us it was company policy to serve only Flora and they hadn’t any butter on the premises! I find this shocking and unacceptable when cardiologists now recommend their patients eat butter!
I opted for sausages and mash, which was a mistake as the sausages were very cheap and had a nasty taste. As I was so hungry after a very busy day, I ate most of them heavily disguised with the mash, gravy and mustard! The latter being nice.
During our stay there was a group of older men on the opposite side of the pub who were swearing loudly and continually. This was upsetting my friends so I went and asked the men to stop. This they did with much apologising and even sent a round of drinks over to us, which was very kind. However, it transpired that they are regulars who always apologise for swearing if they think ladies have heard! Why are the allowed to continue swearing so much?
Needless to say, we won’t be returning.

Prior to this month , this pub was a two for one cheap and cheerful. The two for one deal have now stopped and the price of a meal increased (not insubstantiality).
Never the less we thought we would give it a try, hoping that the increase in price would bring about the appropriate increase in standard of food and service.
Unfortunately this is not the case. The ingredients were of the a very poor quality and served over cooked. When one meal ( the fish and chips were sent back) as the fish was over cooked , chewy and basically inedible, the plate came back minus the fish but with everything else. It was expected the rest of the meal, also poorly cooked and presented, would be eaten whilst another portion of fish was cooked. This was eventually rectified as a full replacement meal was given.
On the plus side the drinks were of god quality and reasonably priced and the waiting staff were helpful.

Honestly disgusted by the staff’s attitude. We had booked for a family party in advance so we was expecting a long wait for food and was fine with that. However, the food wasn’t up to scratch, one example being the steaks and burgers were over cooked. We decided to just let this slide though as we were a big booking and wasn’t expecting everything to be perfect. But to then over hear 2 staff members talking about the young children and calling them names is just disrespectful and down right out of order. Bearing in mind the young children are all between 1-7 years old and a 50 minute-1hour20minutes wait for food will cause them to be agitated. The staff have not thought to bear in mind some of these children have underlying issues, it is absolutely disgusting. And then to top it off, when leaving the establishment we witnessed one of the chefs smoking a cigarette in her chef’s whites. Anybody who has worked in the food industry will know this is not appropriate hygiene procedures.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. I can only apologise about the wait times. The chef in which your speaking about does not smoke cigarettes but does use a vape pen out side from time to time. I understand how this can look like smoking. I will however look into the name calling. Thank you once again.
