We had 3 nights here. Very friendly staff and very good food in the restaurant and also in the bar. Breakfasts were amazing. I agree with another review there should be one loo roll on a holder plus another two spare. A silly thing but the teacups and saucers in the room did not ‘match’ and by that I mean the teacup did not fit on the saucer so when I made a cup of tea and went to pass this to my partner the cup just slid across the saucer and could have covered him and the bed with hot tea. Caught just in time.

We were given a weekend break as a Christmas gift and enjoyed it very much. We liked the art work and furnishings. Our room ( Polyphemus) was clean and comfortable with a huge bed and couch which was appreciated. Plenty of storage too. The bathroom had a fab shower and bath with plenty of hot water, lovely Molton Brown toiletries and big towels. The food was delicious and plentiful…dinner and breakfast. Staff were all chatty and friendly. (The room did have a strange noise which was not evident on our first day/ night but it was there after that, don’t know if it was an extractor or the central heating) It is dog friendly. Lots of places to visit within easy driving.

Booked a table for an evening meal on the last night of our week staying best Cornhill-upon-tweed. We are seated in the informal area due to having it dog with us, which was clearly stated on the website so not a problem at all. Although, not in the main restaurant, the area was still very comfortable and set up for eating an evening meal (not just in a bar area). Food was very good quality and tasty. Staff were friendly and helpful and generally the service was good. Kristie (general manager) answered my messages promptly and was very helpful when booking the table. Thank you.

We booked two rooms, with dinner and breakfast for our family. On arrival the greeting was non-existent, there is no reception desk and the lady just pointed upstairs to ( roughly ) were our rooms were located and walked off. No interest in us whatsoever. The rooms were adequate for the price, but very drab with no chair in our room, no pictures on the wall, all pretty spartan. Good shower and nice little bathroom. The building itself was attractive from outside but inside it was drab and unwelcoming, with very poor lighting, no feeling of cosiness on a chilly November day. Dinner was mediocre, apart from the scallops which were beautifully cooked and delicious. We were in a quiet and bland dining room with zero ambience. We agreed a rate of £35 for our evening meal and not only were we then charged extra for some menu choices but we then realised that most of the menu choices would have added up to less than the fixed price we were charged ! I queried the extra charges for our menu choices and this was to be referred to the owner....and I am still waiting to hear anything; meanwhile they added the charges to my last bill ( for drinks etc, without saying....very shabby indeed ). On a more positive note the breakfast was good, but that was the ONLY enjoyable experience of our entire stay. The hotel has so much more potential (new staff and some management would be a good start ) but at present it is a disappointment in almost every way.

We had dinner in their restaurant recently and the service and food were quite good although they mainly offer just pub food. They also offer very few alcohol free drinks and they might consider adding Seedlip or Gordon’s 0.0% spirits to their selection. My real issue was that the food was overpriced fir what it was at over £30 per head with only about one drink per person. Their Rasberry Cranachan fir example is £8.50 and for a small glass of whipped cream with some raspberries, hardly any oats and whisky you could not taste, this was too much. We won’t be back.

Response from Kristie Taylor, General Manager at The Collingwood Arms Hotel
Responded 4 Jun 2021
Firstly I'd like to apologize for our standards not been as high as usual as we strive on our high standards here at The Collingwood. We are going in a new direction and trying something new and are still making tweaks as we have been closed for 7 months and only opened on 17th May! We will also look into getting more non alcoholic drinks in our bar. Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review.

A lovely friendly hotel.
I had a lovely corner room (room 5) which was light and airy, until it got dark, when there was not enough lighting in the large room. Luckily I had a bath and a shower as the shower was broken for the duration of my stay (they were awaiting a part).
The staff were very welcoming, although the manager was only there one evening and she was a bit abrupt.
Breakfast was lovely- yogurt and fruit compote, toast followed by other choices from the menu. The full English breakfast was huge (I didn’t try it but it looked very nice)

Having eaten many times over the year we finally stayed the night. Travelling with a little one always makes me anxious but we were warmly welcomed and given a fantastic cot bed which is not always the case with hotels.
The room was lovely with a big comfy bed which is always key!
Breakfast was very varied and catered for all us, they even went out to get bananas for our little girl. Top stay from start to finish.

All look great when we drove up to the hotel and looking at the gardens were fantastic but that’s when it started going down.

We were greeted by a very unfriendly person because we had to ring the door bell and were told we should of pushed the door harder how could we have known this then told where our room where not even shown.

We had two Scottie dogs with us which they knew about and I think we had the smallest room in the hotel we had to pay for the dogs not that we mind that but their were no beds, bowels, treats, and not much space.

I have attached a few photos of our room after it had been serviced disgraceful.

The only saving grace was the food in the evening complements to the chef breakfast was also good good choices the service on the first morning was great I think it was the owner as the service was fantastic but the next morning the wheels had fallen completely off uncleared tables guest waiting.

My sisters room was much bigger then ours but there was only no towels in the room and it also needs some maintenance also not serviced the next day.

We all found the staff unfriendly and not bothered except the owner/manager at breakfast.

I did email the hotel on my return pointing out my issue and to give them a chance to respond but nothing up-to now. Not what one would expect from a hotel at theses prices

We stayed one night and were given a friendly welcome. Offered a table to eat immediately which suited us and from then on we received attentive, polite and relaxed service from the busy staff. Room was simple but nice. Full English Breakfast was cooked beautifully. We enjoyed our short stay.

Stayed for one night as part of a birthday gift and wish it had been longer - we'll definitely be back!

Room (Swiftsure)
Lovely and spacious with a huge bed and sofa, plenty of storage with a large wardrobe and drawers plus a seperate dressing table. Despite being over the entrance to the hotel facing the road we didn’t hear any noise at all due to the double sash windows. Bathroom was huge with a great shower and Molton Brown toiletries. Instructions on how to work the shower were very helpful to prevent the usual approach of twiddling all the handles and trying not to scald or freeze yourself! Our only criticism is the seal at the bottom of our shower needed cleaning, but otherwise both the hotel and room were immaculate and it didn’t affect how much we enjoyed our stay

Food and Drinks
Lots of options on both bar and restaurant menu for dinner - the pork belly and roe deer loin were both outstanding, and the cheese board was a great sharer for afterwards. We ordered whilst having drinks in the library and then moved to the bar area eat which made for a nice relaxing meal. We also found the drinks to be really reasonably priced compared to other hotels, with the Syrah rosé and Chilean malbec both beautiful and the real ale and lager on tap in great condition. For breakfast again a great choice of cooked items as well as cereals, fruits and yogurt. Everything we got was fab including a huge portion of smoked salmon!

Staff
Outstanding customer service better than we've had in hotels with much higher ratings. All the staff we met were friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We were given assistance with luggage to our room, a bottle of wine was opened just so we could try it first and when a member of our party with mobility issues sat in the library a side table was immediately placed next to them by staff as the coffee table was hard to reach.
