Part of the hotel dates from the 14th century and the history and grandeur are part of the overall experience of staying there. We spent 2 nights in room 3 and had a wonderful stay. The room was beautifully decorated and spacious with many of the original features still in place. This room also has a very large 'sleigh' bed which was wonderfully comfortable. The peacefulness and dark sky that the hotel enjoys also added to the experience. The breakfast choice is excellent and the food is beatifully cooked. We also ate dinner at the hotel and although the menu choice is limited (3-4 choices for each course) the food was excellent and reasonably priced. The 'Oak Dining Room' is a perfect setting to eat with its oak panelling, stained glass windows and original fireplace. I couldn't fault our hosts who were so welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble for them and the owner kindly let us look at some of the other rooms (there are 18 in total) so that we could see the different features and individual characters of each room. We will definitely be staying again and would strongly recommend if you want to splash out and treat yourself.

We were given a night at this hotel as a gift, and we had a lovely experience. The property has history and atmosphere, and although there are a few tacky "medieval" additions to the decor, the overall feel of the public areas is charming. The bar and lounge areas were lovely relaxing spaces to sit by the fireside in the cosy leather seats. The restaurant portions were very generous, and the staff were very attentive despite being only a small team. At reception they volunteered to help with local information, including alternative restaurant options, without being prompted. We had what I assume was a standard double room - not sumptuous or large, but very pleasant and comfortable. Above all else however, our experience was made by the wonderfully warm welcome from the very friendly owner/manager: she could not have done enough for us to make our stay enjoyable. It felt like we were guests in their home.

Our first trip away after lockdown. We went with our 2 dogs. We could not have been made to few more welcome or safe. We immediately noticed the attention to detail regarding social distancing and safety including staff wearing masks or shields, hand held and signage everywhere as well as altered restaurant and room cleaning services. As a health care professional, they could not have done it better, so highly recommended if you want a trip away in safety under the current circumstances.
In normal terms, this is a super friendly, family run business, and dogs are more than welcome, it really is a home from home. And last but not least, what a magnificent area.

Absolutely loved our stay here. The room was enormous with incredible old furniture and a super comfortable bed. It had tea and coffee facilities, bottled water, tissues, shower caps, shower gel, shampoo dnd conditioner. Also a hairdryer, which I'm not sure was mentioned in the booking information.
The hosts were the most friendly and helpful that I've encountered anywhere.
The food was beautiful and the drinks very reasonably priced.
I loved the lounge, I felt so at home there, it had such a lovely feel about it. There was a log burner and candles and the way all the sofas are set out you don't feel like you're sitting on top of each other. The whole place was very cosy, no castle draughts here.
There's lots of interesting features and the owners are happy for you to have a look around.
There's not much in the village but there is a convenience store on the main road just before you turn up the drive. There's also Otterburn Mill which has a cafe just 5 minutes walk down the road.
I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

When we drove up to this hotel we were thoroughly impressed by the grandeur of the building. The hosts were very welcoming at check in and explained everything to us and provided us with the room key.

We were not happy with the first room and this was rectified very quickly which we were impressed with, however although the next room was a lot bigger, the room was not clean. There was cobwebs along the roof and window, damp patches on the wall and wardrobe was unusable due to damp. The carpet need a good vacuum and the bathroom was what i expect from a one star establishment.

The windows in the bedroom and bathroom were filthy inside and out and that has not happened overnight.

On a plus side the public areas were clean and well maintained and the food served in the restaurant was delicious as was breakfast.

This place has got so much potential and is in an ideal location for touring nearby.

Stayed here for one night with my family, plus dog. Excellent, friendly greeting and the whole feel of the place is welcoming, even the local tabby who roams the car park likes to say hello. Staff were so attentive that it felt like you were staying with friends. Rooms are clean and well appointed, but keep in mind it is a very old building and does not have the facilities or layout of a modern hotel. The lounge and bar are well stocked and you can relax in comfortable leather chairs by a warm fire. Food was excellent, both breakfast and dinner. The hotel looks fabulous and has nice grounds to wander around; very highly recommended.

We were looking forward to staying in the castle, the night before attending a wedding in the village. After looking at the pictures on the website, we felt £160 was expensive, but hopefully worth the money for the experience.. Disappointed in the room, is an understatement! We contacted the hotel on our return to advise them that we felt the room, especially the bathroom, was not clean, in fact I would say the bathroom was disgusting. Black mould everywhere! The windows hadn't been cleaned for years, Tea and coffee spills and damp on the walls. I took a picture of the pile of dust we collected from the picture frame.

Their response?

"Although they (the housekeeper and manager) have noted your complaint they did not agree with your comments about the room".

I understand it's a very old building, which should add to the charm, but there is no excuse for dirty rooms.

I wish we had stayed in one of the rooms that they advertise!

Our friends also stayed. They complained at the time, but it all fell on deaf ears.

I'll leave you to look at the photos to make your own mind up. (Struggling to upload pictures but will keep trying)

HORRENDOUS - avoid at all costs.
I am the daughter of the previous reviewer.
Nothing short of shocking behaviour from the “owner” of this hotel.
Her manners are a disgrace, her customer service is none existent, her ability to just be a nice person seems to disappeared/perhaps never existed. Ok, so everyone has an off day, but to THROW us out of a hotel with 5 minutes to spare, purely because we asked if there was a different room due to catfishing photos online and booking.com!
If you flick through previous reviews, you’ll note that Room 2 has had a few bad reviews already, quite a few years ago. Looks to me as if zero improvements have ever been made.
£400 for 2 nights, to stay in a damp, mouldy, smelling, dark, zero fresh air (windows painted shut) room is quite frankly nothing short of daylight robbery, excuse the pun. Nothing funny about it!!
Save yourself the misfortune, there was a beautiful Airbnb situated on a small farm 10 minutes down the road, called Foundary Farm cottage. They accommodated us within 10 minutes of enquiring, a whole house for £320!
Elena, you should honestly reduce the listing price of your castle and hang up your hospitality boots. Whatever your reply to this review, please remember, I have the video of you banging on the door and shouting at us.
Sincerely, very let down customer.

Dear Guest, Thank you for your comments. Obviously threatening behaviour seems to be a family trait. Do as you wish with your video as I am sure it will provide a great deal of hilarity, as will our CCTV footage. Yours sincerely, A very happy Hotel Owner.

We have just had 2 nights stay at this lovely historic hotel. The staff are all very attentive and polite, nothing was to much trouble. The rooms were clean and tidy. The food and drinks were excellent.
The castle is set in beautiful surroundings.
There are ma y walks from this location, and it would be ideal for cyclists and those just wanting to explore the area.
I can highly recommend this hotel.

We treated ourselves to a birthday overnight at Otterburn Castle. We drive past it regularly on way to vets but didn't think dogs would be welcome and were surprised they were.

Had a ground floor room as our poodle had major surgery 4 weeks prior and didn't want to climb stairs. The room was large, dark in style with lots of wood panelling, dark furniture and fabrics. Very comfortable.

Some of the lights didn't work, and there is a bit of cosmetic work required in the large bathroom to fix some grouting and sealing and fill in holes made where a new shower has been installed. But nothing to spoil our visit.

The three course dinner was very good, especially the tagine and the chocolate torte. On element that could be improved on would be the duo of pate, as they would be nicer if home made. Breakfast was very good.

Our poodles were allowed everywhere and enjoyed themselves. We were made very welcome by all the staff and the atmosphere is relaxed and unstuffy. Some hotels even if dogs are welcome, you feel on edge. This wasn't the case here - though one woofie who had to go out at 3am to have a toilet break is lucky to have survived the night! He even had the nerve to suggest then was a good time to go walkies.

We have censored the photos as the poodles were supposed to stay on their own bed....

Very enjoyable, would return.

Hello, there are new owners of the Hotel and they are most friendly, helpful, welcoming and go out of their way to help in anyway they can. We certainly had a wonderful stay, it was a special occasion for us as we were celebrating our wedding anniversary and my husband's birthday and we would definitely go back again. There is also so much to see and do around the area, well worth a visit. The castle is charming as are the staff and we were very comfortable!
