Charming 16th-century country inn has exposed stone walls, original beams, low ceilings and open fires. Run by the Kershaws since 1985, the inn was originally a farmhouse and has been refurbished to a very high standard. Using only the finest and freshest locally sourced produce and ingredients some of the house specialties to savour are simply cooked fresh fish, game and mushroom pie and slow roasted Northumbrian lamb.

Outstanding home cooked meal with friendly service. Highly recommended if you're ever near here. Booking essential at weekends in holiday periods though plenty of outside seating if you just want a beer.

Booked this inn based on other recommendations and were not disappointed. Thrilled in fact. Delightful hosts. Our room, 7 was across the yard. All the elements absolutely right - large comfortable bed (Scandinavian system?), good linens and towels, proper reading lights, storage etc. (though maybe a coat hook or two inside the door?) Immaculate. My personal crusade is to encourage hotels to stop providing little plastic bottles of toiletries - such a shocking waste. Here, large dispensers of high end products provided - Bramble. Top marks. Local produce to eat - everything delicious.

Overnight stay on our trip to Scotland and it did not disappoint. We had a lovely walk on the shores of the reservoir followed by a brilliant meal and a couple of drinks. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the food was excellent.
