Now the pubs are on about re opening I thought I’d write my review, I won’t be coming back to the lock keeper regardless, I came in February for a meal with my husband, there was this young girl Megan her name was because I asked she just kept staring at my husband and he found it very uncomfortable and she kept coming over and then walking away chatting to her work friends, and just kept staring again at my husband and trying to smile at him and even touched his arm at one point which he found very inappropriate and moved , I asked for a manager to which she replied I am a manager well supervisor so you can speak to me. I found her extremely rude and she was obviously aware I was going to make a complaint about her, so we paid and left and won’t be returning especially if this silly little girl is still working, she is too immature to be a manager and really needs training on her service. However the food was amazing but you don’t expect to come to a place where a young girl is acting like that around men.

A one day break to see relatives, very friendly receptionist, the rooms are spotless and adequate for a one night stop. Plenty of car parking and nice gardens. The rooms are not attached to the pub, so there is no issue with noise. Breakfast service very slow, just one chap on duty, he needs help.

On a positive side the rooms are good value for money and the food served in the pub is of a good standard, with a nice carvery too. But there are a lot of negatives unfortunately. Having stayed here on and off for many months I have noticed a high turnover in members of staff (which is never a good sign,) there are a few that have been constant during my stays and they are all excellent (special mention to Emily.) A lot of staff seem to be employed just to clear tables, whilst bar queue gets bigger and bigger, whilst a couple of members of staff are serving both behind the bar and running the check-in desk. Whilst the food is good, if you stay for extended periods it can get boring, the menu could do with changing from time to time. The biggest problem I have found during my stays is the constant running out of the same beers at the bar and failure to have available contiments such as basic stuff like English mustard

Response from Pub Service Desk, Owner at Lock Keeper by Marston's Inns
Responded 27 Sept 2023
Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback and for your continued patronage at The Lock Keeper Inn. We value your loyalty and appreciate your honest observations. We'd like to address a few of the points you've raised in your review. Firstly, we understand your concern regarding staff turnover. In today's employment market, high turnover rates are a challenge faced by many businesses, and it is not necessarily indicative of the health of the establishment. We are proud to share that our pub has one of the highest team satisfaction rates in our company, with an impressive 9.7 out of 10 rating for team engagement at 95%. We strive to create a positive work environment that supports our dedicated team members. Regarding service at the pub, we do employ a combination of team members specifically for floor service and others for bar service. Our scheduling is based on a sales forecast derived from previous years' sales and trends. While we aim to maintain efficient service, there may be occasions when the queue at the bar appears to grow, but we are pleased to note that our service time rate is consistently at just 2 minutes. We understand that the layout of our bar area may create the perception of longer queues, and we appreciate your understanding in this regard. In terms of our menu, we take pride in offering a diverse selection of dishes. Our menu is refreshed twice a year in alignment with industry standards, and we currently offer 25 different main dishes, excluding our burgers and carvery options. We encourage our guests to explore the variety of choices available, and our team members are always happy to provide recommendations and creative add-ons to enhance your dining experience. We appreciate your feedback and the positive remarks about our rooms and the quality of our food, including our carvery. Your insights are valuable to us as we continue to improve and provide the best possible experience for our guests.

Absolutely shocking. Had table booked 2 weeks prior to our arrival for a family get together asked when booking if we should pre order as we were a party of 10 to be told there was no need. Arrived on time stood queuing for a while to be served. We were told there was a 30 minuet wait for food which wasn't a problem if we had wanted fast food we would have gone elsewhere. Ordered within 10 minuets of been seated to be told they had stopped serving from the menu and only carvery was available, which had meat that looked like it had been sat there for some time. After complaining that we were not told this upon our arrival they agreed to let us order off the menu however there would be a 2 hour wait. We had small children in our party the youngest being 4 and a 2 hour wait was a joke.
The excuse was a sudden influx of customers within the 10 minuets we were looking at the menu. Surly if they knew they would struggle with the current customers that were seated and had pre booked a table they should have turned away any other customers wanting food.
The whole experience was shambolic handle very poorly by rude and clearly in experienced staff.
Would not recommend at all, save you self the hassle and book elsewhere.

My wife and I stayed here for three nights from the 5th July whilst visiting the area around Clumber Park. Our stay was very pleasant with a very comfortable room. I don't know if the rooms had been recently refurbished but the standard of fixtures and fittings was excellent, especially the bathroom. the room size was not that big but adequate for our stay and had a very comfortable bed.
the room was also spotlessly clean.
Although there was no staff in the hotel lodge, the staff in the adjacent pub were very friendly and helpful.
We had a couple of meals in the pub restaurant which were very nice.
Although the hotel is situated between two busy roads there was no noise in our room or in the pub area.
Carpark is large and free with a separate carpark for hotel guests. Very nice seating and garden area with views of the canal.
If I we were to visit the area again, the Lock Keeper would be our base.

I came to your pub today as a family of 6 and was appalled at the service!
We came around 12.15pm after calling a week in advance to book a table and been told you only take bookings for over 10 people. I find this ridiculous as people were left waiting on arrival for a seat on one of the most busiest days of the week!
So we waited 45 minutes for a table with my little girl who's 1 year old, screaming and crying due to being bored and impatient.
After finally being seated at 1pm on a table that was reserved for what looked like a family of 8 and previously being told on the phone tables can't be booked for families under 10 people, we then had to que in the longest que ever. When you come for food you all want to eat together not separately and I found it rather pathetic that you only had 1 person serving behind the carvery deck. We heard that you had people on holiday but surely on the busiest day off the week you would get cover staff to help?
Because of the ques and having to sort our little girl out before queuing ourselves are party of 6 people all ended up eating separately which goes against pork point of going out as a family to have a meal!
Another moan of ours is some of the vegetables were still hard, probably due to the fact that the poor guy serving behind the carvery deck looked rushed off his feet, and the fact that the ques were rather long and people were kept waiting therefore things were coming out half cooked in order to stop people waiting.
We normally dine at your pub on a number of occasions but today the service was very poor!

Booked for Sunday lunch when staying in Clumber Park, we were really ready for this meal after a busy day but were very disappointed. Staff were fine but the food...don’t do it....we were pretty early and already one meat was finished on the carvery, food arrived tepid, practically cold actually, apart from the Yorkshire pudding which was still frozen! Yum! We ask them to hold the mash but we had an almighty helping, which was more like white slop....ordered pigs in blankets as an extra which arrived as we finished the meal. The children’s food was poor too. Overall we all left wondering why we hadn’t opted for TGI. Got back to the accommodation and cooked more food for the children and we opened a big bag of crisps! Given we have all been in lockdown, you would think everyone would be keen to get it right. Location great, good for a drink but wouldn’t recommend eating here.

We stopped by for a carvery on a Sunday early evening. The staff were friendly enough but when asking if they had an elderflower tonic water I was offered an elderflower gin! There was oonly Gammon and turkey left on the carvery which we were warned before when we ordered, not a problem. There were no brussel sprouts for the turley though which is a pity. We had to wait a while to get served at the carvery despite being the only ones in the queue. The serving area looked like a swarm of locusts had just passed through! The last few shrivelled up carrots. Had to ask for condiments. The toilets.......... well.... one was out of order with no working light, the next didn't have a working lock on the door and the next I really won't describe, let's just say I suspect someone had an upset tummy! What a shame because the location next to the canal is lovely

I booked a Sunday night here for some training on the Monday morning. I booked directly on line about a month before.
When I arrived they had no record of my booking. I showed them the booking confirmation and reference and they said they had no record of it. They claimed to be full and have no spare rooms although not all customers had checked in yet. They made scant efforts to look for local hotels and just said they were all full because of a festival. They said "head office often doesn't pass bookings on to them", and she'd turned away a family with small children recently too. They really didn't care that they were breaking their contract and turning someone onto the streets.
When I checked my email later, I found an automatic cancellation email sent by them to me at about 7pm while I was driving. I most certainly had not cancelled my booking en route!
I was lucky - I had a car and a smart phone and means of payment so was able to book the last room in a travelodge about 20 miles away at 21:30 and travel there for a much warmer welcome and a safe night's sleep.

Our room was drab, austere and very basic, with a hideous picture above the bed. The bedroom furniture was dark brown and had no drawers, and very little storage space, therefore quite a few of our clothes had to remain in our suitcases. However, there was nowhere practical to even place our suitcases, therefore they had to remain on the floor. Room service was virtually non existent, our room wasn’t cleaned, or beds made, although we had requested that our room be serviced.
As a consequence we had to go along to the restaurant/pub to ask for toilet paper, tea bags, sugar, etc as there was no receptionist to ask on reception in the accommodation block where we were staying.
In fact in all the time we were there, we didn’t see anyone on reception in the accommodation block. The TV only had 5 channels all of which, we weren’t really interested in. Breakfast was a hugely difficult challenge, especially when attempting a diy continental breakfast, the toaster was not working, hot water for tea/coffee not working either, (no one tells us) we were constantly up and down trying to find things to make up our breakfast. Needless to say we certainly weren’t prepared to endure another arduous eating experience. Fortunately we discovered the Premier Inn/Beefeater just across the road, which we had a much better and relaxed eating experience.
The very last straw was, whilst we were fast asleep the fire alarm went off at 12.10am then again at 12.30. The ear piercing sound of the alarm was horrendous! Needless to say there was no fire! Without hesitation we decided to leave a day early, as we are quite elderly, and feared for our health as we were awake all night in a state of panic, especially as there wasn’t anyone around to let us know what was happening! Based on our experience we feel this Hotel is very badly managed, and serious questions need to be asked! It makes Faulty Towers seem inviting!
We now understand that a night porter was on site during the night in question, however we weren’t informed that it was all a false alarm!

Response from Pub Service Desk, Owner at Lock Keeper by Marston's Inns
Responded 27 Sept 2023
Thank you for sharing your feedback regarding your recent stay at The Lock Keeper. We appreciate your input, as it helps us identify areas where we can improve our services and address any concerns. We'd like to clarify a few points in response to your comments. As you mentioned, we are an inn, and it's common for inns to have their reception based in the pub area. This is typically signposted outside the hotel and upon arrival, so guests are aware of the arrangement. Regarding the room's decor, our rooms are designed in line with our company's overall specifications and in line with many other budget inns. The pictures above the beds are intended to showcase the local area's beauty and charm. We understand that personal taste varies, and we apologize if the decor did not meet your expectations. We are concerned to hear about the issues you faced during your stay, such as the room not being cleaned as requested and the need to request basic amenities. We take these matters seriously, and we will be addressing them with our housekeeping and service teams to ensure that such oversights do not occur in the future. Lastly, we deeply regret the inconvenience caused by the fire alarm disturbances during your stay. We want to assure you that we take the safety of our guests very seriously. In this unfortunate incident, a guest inadvertently triggered the fire alarm panel. Our staff responded swiftly to investigate the situation, as we prioritise the safety and well-being of all our guests. We understand that this was a disruptive experience, and we apologise for any inconvenience it may have caused. We appreciate your feedback and thank you for choosing The Lock Keeper
