We stayed at The Sudbury House Hotel for a 4 night celebration break (Birthdays and 47 year wedding Anniversary) and we were not disappointed.
We chose the deluxe 3 room suite which must be the biggest suite we have ever stayed in, it is huge and overlooks the rear gardens.
The suite is beautifully decorated and furnished with so much room, extra large extremely comfortable bed with plenty of pillows. Two matching settees and armchair in the lounge with a massive flat screen tv. The small kitchen area has tea and coffee facilities and a Smeg fridge which was very handy.
The bathroom had a large walk in shower with monsoon shower head, a very large roll top bath and fluffy large white towels and complimentary toiletries.
The floor is a little uneven but it is a grade 2 listed part of the hotel but this did not cause any problems. Even though the room was near the restaurant and the outside seating area it was so quiet and peaceful.
The continental breakfast was delivered to the room each day and was very well presented and a bouquet of flowers was delivered to the room by the manager on our anniversary which was a very nice gesture.
We dined in the restaurant and even though it was a reduced menu due to COVID it was a very enjoyable experience with plenty of room between tables and very friendly waiter and waitress.
All in all we really enjoyed our stay and will definitely be returning.

A fabulous hotel set in the most beautiful surroundings. The check in n arrival was swift and easy to do, with plenty of information available for visitors. Green, the manager was fabulously accommodating to the requests from me and my colleagues, given the late shifts that we had to work, she arranged to have a light breakfast available slightly later to allow us to get adequate rest. Totally brilliant!

The night porter Colin had to let us back in most evenings (well early mornings!) and was always happy to serve us a late night drink. Much appreciated after another late shift.

The room was spotless, with a huge, comfy bed, good sized TV, great shower over bath and complimentary tea, coffee, water and snacks. I really appreciated the black out blinds, allowing a completely dark room even though the sun was shining. The housekeeping staff were cheery and happy to help with any issues, making the whole experience nice and relaxing.

Due to the timings, I was not able to eat dinner here, but colleagues assured me it was delicious and great value. However I was able to enjoy the breakfast, absolutely delicious with lots of selection, friendly staff and a swift service, all in a restaurant that looked out to the Patio and beautiful gardens beyond. For those not eating dinner at the hotel it’s 5 min walk to Faringdon where there is a great selection of pubs and restaurants to choose from.

Overall this is the second time I have stayed here, and both times I have had a lovely, relaxing stay. I will be requesting this hotel for every future visit to the UK!

Thank you Green and the team :)

We arrived with plenty of choice for parking, yes as reviews say the main carpark is on a slight hill but it's fine or you can either park outside the doors where there is a couple of spaces or on the gravel outside bar 56 for the less active. The hotel had a nice big entrance and we was checked in by a lovely friendly lady who explained everything to us as our 1st stay here. We took the lift to our room which was clean and well thought out on using the space. We had 2 chairs and a table which some only have 1 chair which annoys me so was happy with a view of the lawn/tress and greenery so we sat and enjoyed a glass of wine looking out. The ironing board is hidden behind the large mirror which was good, iron and hairdryer supplied. There was a dressing table with another chair , tea/coffee facilties with biscuits and a modern bathroom. Everything you need. The hotel itself had a large bar area but was very quite which was not surprising due to the prices (6.70 pint peroni) cheaper to walk to town as numerous pubs there and took about 5-10 mins walk. Lovely restaurant which we had evening meal and breakfast there, couldn't fault the food or service and yes for both you book a time slot which was fine with us so not overly busy at one time. Breakfast is buffet for cereal, toast, fruit, pasties etc but you order hot food off the menu cooked to order which was nice with a good selection. We had a walk into the town which had numerous pubs and a few shops nice to have a stroll out or you can have a walk to the folly woodland and Tower which is nearby and good to have a walk around to spot the carved woodland animals. Overall we had a lovely stay with friendly staff, great service and a comfortable stay.

Booked a one night package, including dinner, based on location and "highly acclaimed" dining...
Check-in was perfect with a lovely receptionist who explained everything, confimed our booking for dinner and booked us a time for breakfast.
Our room was on the ground floor and was clean and modern and had everything expected apart from biscuits and bottled water (although the receptionist did give us some biscuits when we pointed this out). No view, just another building.
The bathroom was also clean and modern although we were surprised it was just a shower with no bath given the website describes the rooms as having "ensuite bathrooms and showers" and all the pictures show baths. Bizarrely the shower was so big a bath would easlily have fitted so don't understand why they didn't put one in and give guests the choice...
The dining room was nicely decorated with tables decently far apart but things got off to a bad start when our drinks didn't arrive until after we had finished our starters. Plus no complimentary homemade bread was offered. The starter of smoked salmon was actually very good but it went downhill from there. The chicken main was meant to come with hasselback potatoes but came with normal potatoes which were reheated and partly cold and the chicken was dry. The pork main was missing the black pudding AND the bramley apple puree and came with normal brocalli not the tenderstem on the menu.
We had a quiet word with the restaurant manager about this and also to check if deserts were actually going to be as described on the menu! He apologised and admitted the food was below the expected standard and said this was because the chef had left!! He offered us replacement mains but we'd eaten most of them so had no room, he offered not to charge us for them but we had already paid the booking company so he said he would remove the charges for the drinks we'd had and get us another one (we asked for Baileys but they didn't have any!) which we felt was fair. He also recommended two deserts he said would be good and they were fine.
There was no aircon in the room and it was too hot to sleep well.
Breakfast was better than dinner, all served at the table and the full English was very nice although apart from juice, tea/coffee and toast nothing else such as cereal or fruit was offered. And the decaf coffee came cold.
We went for a walk around the old part of the house and the gardens which were very pretty and well maintained.
So overall staff were all lovely, the room/facilities were ok but not quite up to it's 4 silver star rating and the dinner was well below the two rossette standard that is advertised (and we had paid for). We won't be rushing back which is a shame as it could be very good.

We were looking forward to this break as it was our first trip away since the start of the pandemic. When we arrived at the hotel it looked very nice and our room was very clean. We had asked for a room away from the wedding venue, but when we got to our room we noticed we were overlooking it. We went to dinner that evening to the dining room on the first floor that overlooked the car park, as the normal dining room was set out for the wedding function. Whilst dining and looking out of the window, we saw wedding guests in the car park, urinating and taking drugs, not a very nice outlook at all. Although we do accept this would not have been the hotels fault, but maybe they should consider installing CCTV in their car park. Later when we went to bed we couldn't sleep until the wedding had finished which was late at night, we just got off to sleep when the neighbouring room doors kept banging as wedding guests returned to their rooms. I feel they could have been a bit more considerate. The next morning we had noticed that we had run out of toilet paper, and needed some a bit sharpishly. I phoned down to reception from the hotel room phone, it rang for about five minutes and no one answered it, I was desperate. (imagine the situation) I then phoned from my mobile so they thought it was an outside call and they answered immediately. The same morning we went to breakfast, and entered the dining room first as we had a family event to attend at 10:00am that morning. The cooked breakfast was just luke warm, the food was not covered. I did tell a member of staff that it would most probably keep warmer if they covered the food, I thought it would make sense in covid times, and be more hygienic. My comments fell on deaf ears, as the next morning, the same scenario, cold breakfast. Again I complained, but to no avail, and the next morning we decided to have cereal and toast, as we couldn't face another cold breakfast, still the hot/cold food was still left uncovered on the third morning. This proves no one at the hotel cared if anyone complained. I did mention this to several members of staff, one of them being the under Manager. When we checked out I mentioned it to the young lady on reception and she ignored me. I said to her you are doing the same as the other staff in this hotel just ignoring me, she picked up a pen and paper to make a note, I told her not to bother. At that point another lady in reception intervened, and said she would refund us £30 for the first two mornings breakfasts. I said to her that is not why we have complained, it is because every complaint fell on deaf ears, it appeared nobody cared. I have never sent a review to any company before, but because I was so upset I wanted to send one. I phoned the hotel to ask how I should post a review, and hung on the phone for seven minutes, and no one answered. I then sent them two different emails asking them how to do it and they never answered either. I am sending this review hoping that they read it and accept constructive criticism. As they do have a lovely hotel there and with a few tweaks it could be great, but I would never go back there now because they constantly ignored us.

Dear jemiwild, Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear aspects of your stay were not up to scratch. As I spoke to you on check out I am aware of your concerns and these have been raised with the restaurant team. Our breakfast buffet is self service and is presented in chauffer dishes which are heated from the bottom and we also place them under heat lamps. They all have covers but it does rely on the guest closing them after use. I understand from speaking to my general manager that she had offered to cook you a fresh breakfast but the offer was refused. None the less I am glad you have had a refund for the breakfast that you did not enjoy. All the best

We treated ourselves to a suite as we wanted to relax and spend time away from lots of people. It had a great spacious bedroom, bathroom and lounge area. Tastefully decorated and very comfortable. The bedroom overlooked the grounds. The whole hotel was very clean. We chose not to have our room cleaned daily so people were not coming in. The housekeeping staff were happy to leave any supplies we needed outside the door. We had a couple of issues with our room which were dealt with efficiently and quickly by Jane. I see that lack of heating is a theme. Our sitting room was cold but an electric heater was available. Unfortunately the wifi was poor in out suite and is not suitable if you want to do any work in the room.
We found the staff very hardworking and friendly. At times they seemed to be short staffed, probably due to Covid restrictions. This was especially felt with the cooking as we had many issues with our meals. Communication between the waiting staff and chef did appear to be problematic, possible related to wearing masks. Even given the Covid restrictions I felt the limits of the menu was too constrained as it did not change over the week. We did enjoy the full English breakfast. They were happy to provide me with beans on toast.
The hotel is covid secure with sanitizer available for guests around the premises. There was good spacing between the tables and only once did I feel there was too many people in the breakfast room and the door should have been open for ventilation. If we had not had problems with many times getting the wrong food ordered a better score would have been given. The food was delicious though if a little pricey.

So myself and my partner went for Afternoon tea to the restaurant. As we are local we thought it was a good way to help the economy during the pandemic as lockdown eases.

I shall start by saying the hotel and restaurant are very clean, there are sanitizer stations at the entrance and you can clearly see the staff wearing masks and sticking to guidelines. Until the shift change then I saw one of the managers wearing their face mask as a neckerchief.

The food was ok, for what we paid it wasn't value for money.

The big thing that has let this establishment down again is the attention to detail. The single server trying to cover the whole restaurant inside and the dining area outside is not on. It should have been two members of staff. Can't expect someone in their late teens to run the operation.

Where is the supervisor or manager?

Feels more like a posh diner than posh restaurant attached to what was a Michelin star guide hot spot.

Poor show. Maybe focus more on getting the basics right before charging for city centre Oxford.

Will be interesting to see the pricing when the new hotel and restaurant opens in the area come 2021.

Dear James N, Thank you for taking time to review our property, I'm glad you felt we offered a secure and clean venue but sorry your Afternoon tea didn't live up to expectations. We apologise of our service was a little slower than usual, with the changing times we are in we try to keep staffing to appropriate levels but this isn't always possible when staff are required to isolate or are unable to work at last minute. We hope to welcome you back to the hotel soon for a better experience Best Wishes Sudbury House Hotel

We stayed 5 nights as part of a much needed break. The hotel was clean, the staff friendly but they did have staff shortage issues while we were there (as we were told upon check-in, which can happen in these times and is not a big deal for us). Breakfast was good, but the restaurant not always open (or only for people who had booked DBB rates). It was not a problem for us to eat in town (they have some good options) but the suggestions we were given were all a bit of a drive away. Some local suggestions within walking distance would be good to have. The bar was open on our arrival but we were too tired to use it. The doors were kept shut the rest of our stay so we were uncertain if it was open or not but didn't dare walk in.
We were informed upon check-in that there would be no room cleaning service, which is not a problem. We got our new toilet rolls from reception (and if we would have needed it toiletries and towels), but it would have been nice to have a toilet brush in the room, especially with these type of toilets.

When we arrived we were greeted by a friendly receptionist who gave us our room card. We eventually found it, at the back of beyond, the room was disappointing - bath over shower despite specifically requesting a walk in shower when I booked. We were then offered an alternative.

The hotel lacked atmosphere, was quiet but soulless. No sign of our Prosecco and strawberries & cream as per the two night spring offer (which incidentally we were emailed about and when we rang to book they all claimed it wasn’t a current one! I forwarded the email to prove it so they eventually, a week later, agreed to honour it!)

The ground floor room was slightly better. However the room was tired but it had a walk in shower! What it lacked unfortunately was a wardrobe or indeed anywhere to store/hang clothes other than two small drawers and space to hang two coats. There was a lumpy cheap pillow and the duvet had what seemed like lumps of filling and areas with no filling! When we asked for it to be changed the suited lady on reception was not overly apologetic, simply stating that they were in the process of updating duvets, clearly not our room or following a request for a new one. A member of the housekeeping team arrived and advised that the duvet had simply been put on the bed the wrong way and the lumpy bit should have been at the bottom!!! No housekeeping carried out to refresh towels etc, just a fresh bottle of water.

We had high hopes for our mini break but decided on the first evening to cut short our stay. The positives were that the restaurant and reception staff were generally very pleasant and helpful. The food was fine and we were given a bottle of Prosecco in lieu of the Prosecco, strawberries & cream which we should have had.

The hotel needs to re-evaluate it’s standards in line with it’s star rating. We are fortunate enough to be able to go on regular mini breaks and this is the first time ever we have felt compelled to express the negative aspects of any hotel we have ever visited.

Have just come back from a week here. The reception staff were lovely and the room was so comfy and clean. My only negative thing about the room was the lack of water supply ( the bath and shower trickled so the water didn’t stay hot for a while and the toilet seemed to fill up all the time so after using it and flushing you then had to press the little flusher 3 times to shut the toilet up).

Breakfast was lovely although on a weekend the restaurant never opened at 8am like it said - you could go in but the hot food was always behind and you couldn’t get anything til about 8.20am/8.30am. We had 2 meals in the restaurant at night - the Sunday lunch was very disappointing and the other meal was nice however we were not impressed with the price. Can not fault the staff though.

I’m hoping as the hotel has recently reopened because of covid19 these were just teething problems and will get sorted out.

Please note when booking this hotel there are not a lot of places to eat round there so like us we struggled and had to go further out.

Thank you for your question with regards to quiet rooms. Where possible we do allocate rooms away from any function that is in the hotel and also away from the bar area but on occasions where the room windows are open and guests are out on the terrace there can be some noise transference. We would love you to come and stay with us, so feel free to give us a call and we can check whether there is a function on before you book. I hope this was helpful but do please feel free to contact the hotel directly with any more questions.
