The owner Penny was away and very kindly let me stay anyway. Her daughter and son in law ( and their children ), were so kind! Beautiful horses and animals. However on the owners return she walked into my room without asking, offered another guest my shower without asking, closed my windows and generally walked around my room. I know... More

This visitor's mother had begged me to give him a bed while I was abroad. When I told her that he had written this review she texted back to say 'I apologise from the bottom of my heart for the fact that he's projected his psychoses onto you and for thinking being at the farm would do him good. I... More

Four of us stayed here after a day on the Ridgeway. Our rooms were clean and spacious, the beds very comfortable. We had supper cooked for us and it was delicious, mostly homegrown or reared. Nothing was too much trouble, we had a great packed lunch for the next day, after a very hearty breakfast. A perfect farm stay.

We stayed here while walking the Ridgeway. On that basis for location, it couldn't be better. We were greeted with tea and biscuits. Again very good. The room was large, airy and comfortable. The food is wonderful fresh, mainly home produced produce. BUT. We are vegetarians. The owner is a passionate organic farmer. That does not make for a happy... More

This is very much a polarising establishment, can see why one would either love the place or be discomforted by its individuality, I really enjoyed it, Penny was a wonderful host, interesting and friendly, the room was comfortable and the farm has great character. The evening meal was brilliant, just what a hungry walker craves, and breakfast of the same... More

I have to say I disagree with some of the previous reviewers. I was camping with 3 very old friends in their copse so can't report on the accommodation or food. However we were made to feel very welcome by the landlady who was delightful. The setting is beautiful in a rather forgotten part of the south of England.

I think the other reviews have pretty much given you a flavour of the place. I've got to say we 4 fat old male walkers had a good time, despite, or maybe because of the unreconstructed lady host. Maybe we got off to a good start by being polite, deferential and submissive ? I can imagine she doesn't suffer fools gladly... More

The location is lovely, the Ridgeway easily accessible and we were given tea and cake on arrival. But unfortunately our double room had no en suite which was disappointing so it was a bit of a walk down the hallway to use the bathroom. But also there were no tea and coffee making facilities in the room which are pretty... More

We did the Ridgeway Autumn 2011 and Down Barn turned out to be a nice if slightly idiosyncratic stop off. Down Barn Farm is just off the trail, and has a lovely location, with some great views. The Accommodation is of the homey variety, comfortable, but not flash. There were plenty of books to read (I started on bit of... More

We stayed for a night during a short walking holiday of the Ridgeway. Arriving after a day's walking and a little wet and cold, we were greeted with tea and biscuits before a very reasonably priced 3 course dinner featuring organic products from the farm and local sources. Yes, the owner is a "character", but don't mistake her style for... More
