We had a meal in the restaurant which was a little disappointing but non the less tasty and ample portions. We had to leave early before breakfast but where sent on our way with some tasty bacon sandwiches which where gratefully received. We did feel the restaurant area looked a bit tired and could do with a spruce up, but it was clean and cosy.
The members of staff we met were really friendly and helpful and I would recommend staying here.

The room was well presented and clean, although the shower was not good (blocked and the waste pipe needed a good clean hence water didn’t flow away. Hopefully this has been sorted after we brought it to the managers attention.
If you are looking for an inexpensive place to stay, which is dog friendly (and person friendly), are happy with ‘pub grub’ and friendly service. The Bell will serve you well.
Arrived a little earlier than the recommended 4pm
Received a warm welcome and was informed that the room was ready and was shown to the room.
I stayed in room 1 which was a twin with an en suite shower .
Beds were comfortable and there was a tea tray and water.
Had an evening meal which was of great quality with very nice homemade chips.
Breakfast was also included and was also good quality
Would stay again if in the area , and likely visit for a weekend break as there are lots to see in the area
The young lady who booked us in was charming. The route to our room was through two bars, into the outside smoking area and then up an iron, fire escape staircase to the accommodation section.
We were shown into our assigned room, which I can only describe as a bleak, white painted cell, devoid of any charm with a grubby shower room. The window, immediately above the smoking area was filthy and obviously had not been cleaned since the previous occupant reported its same condition. The lack of parking has been mentioned in previous reviews but is important for the older visitor.
I appreciate that at £60 a night this was budget accommodation but we have some standards and as a result felt that the room was not a suitable place to stay. The young lady was apologetic and we obviously lost the £120 we had paid for the two nights but it was worth it to be able to walk away and find more suitable accommodation elsewhere.

We were shown to our room, during which there was no mention of Breakfast, meals, check out times or anything else.
The rooms are out the back door through the smoking area and up a steel staircase.
As you can see from the photos the room was filthy.
The toilet didn't flush properly and still had marks in it.
The shower screen was full of mould and the floor in the bedroom was covered in stains and burn marks.
The radiators were switched off and the window was wide open so the room was cold.
I managed to turn the radiators on after bit of a struggle.
The walls have marks on them and the paint is flaking off onto the carpet. There's cobwebs all over the place.
The windows are draughty and the roller blinds are poorly fitted and fraying. You can't see out of the window because it has fixed shutters on the outside.
The bedding was clean and freshly made but the pillows had a stale smell and no liner on them.
Noise from the bar below was not too loud but you could hear it.
From the outside this pub looks quaint and welcoming.
Please do your research before booking a stay here.
We we were booked in overnight mid-week and received a warm welcome - but even though it was only 7:30pm and we had just driven for 4 hours to get there, we were told the kitchen would be closing in 10 minutes.
After being shown outside and up an external metal staircase to our dog friendly room (which is not recommended for those with mobility problems) we scuttled back down to the bar and ordered some food.
The service was excellent and the bar had a lovely rustic charm, with a big open fire.
Food was nice as were the drinks and they even kindly brought them to the table for you.
The twin room was a bit dated and lacked some basics like coat hangers, but was comfortable overall. Water pressure was dismal in the bathroom however but it is an old historic building after all.
There is no car park and street parking can provide a challenge to find somewhere to leave your car.
We would give this a 2.5 star Inn in terms of accommodation and 3.5 for food and drinks with top marks for attentive service overall.
We found all of it reasonably priced and we would go back and stay over again.
