Haughton Hall Hotel captivates guests with its quirky vintage charm, although it seems to be trapped in a bygone era, with many travelers suggesting a revamp, particularly of the amenities which are often seen as dated. While the rooms are generally considered clean, they too are described as in need of an update, despite their spaciousness. Opinions on service and value are split; guests commend the staff's friendliness, yet others encounter disorganization. Moreover, some visitors mention the spa's cleanliness doesn't meet expectations, adding to the mixed reviews on the hotel's overall value.

My husband's funeral was in the afternoon, and in this strange new world I really struggled to find anywhere for our small party to go following the service. I was so grateful to find that Haughton Hall could provide afternoon Tea in the garden room. Everything felt very safe and socially distanced, which was a comfort to some of our party who had been very careful to stay safe, Our temperature was taken on arrival and we all filled in contact tracing forms with sanitised pens. The room was spacious and the seats well spaced out. There was easy access to the lovely garden so that the children could run around - if the weather had been kinder we could have taken our food outside. The sandwiches and cakes were delicious and looked great too, all just right.A good selection of sandwiches, scones and some elaborate cakes too. There was a lack of something in terms of atmosphere - maybe some music would have helped? There was certainly a lack of staff, it's a good job no one wanted a drink as the bar was deserted and at the end I searched for ages for someone to thank but the place was empty. It's clear they are working hard to rebuild the business following lockdown and I wish them every success, they have a lovely building and provide good food. I rather like the dated feel to the place, it has a period charm. Overall it was great value for money and I'm pleased I found it. .

We stayed at the hotel for 2 nights. We had a twin room and a double room. The twin room had a shower only and the beds, according to my children, were comfortable.
The double room was huge and we had a table and 4 chairs which was great to sit around and play cards together.
The breakfast was fabulous and as a mix of vegetarian and vegan we were well catered for.
However, the mattress in the double room was really really hard, way too hard and I had to move to the sofa bed which was soft but really lumpy. Both my partner and I had bad nights sleep as a result. We didn’t have many tea bags in the room and there was black tea bags only which I don’t drink and the milk was UHT in little pots.
The shower was terrible too, hot enough alright and good pressure but the way the water came out didn’t make for a brilliant experience. The window in the bathroom is clear glass which is a bit strange and so the curtains stayed shut in there. Not much loo roll either and our room wasn’t serviced so supplies weren’t replenished.
We didn’t eat dinner here so can’t comment on that but the bar area was OK. The decor in the bedrooms is very dated and our room had mould in the corner. This place could well do with a spruce up.
All in all I would say we got what we paid for.

Can't praise the staff enough, nothing was too much trouble. Food was excellent and although a limited menu, what was produced was always piping hot and tasty.
Room needs quite a bit of renovation, but was clean.
Felt this was extremely good value for money we were in a manor room which was huge (a little strange clear glass in bathroom but easily solved by leaving blind down) with huge bathroom / dressing room. Furniture was period furniture and a little worse for wear. Obviously as per COVID guidelines no room servicing, which suited us fine. We stayed on the staycation deal so bed breakfast and 3 course evening meal included for £110.00 a night so all in all very good value we felt for a couple.
Didn't use the spa - but read you need to either hire towels or take your own as a tip.

What a disappointment from start to finish! My wife and I had a voucher from a reputable provider for afternoon tea, we decided to give this venue a try. From the Offset of enquiring about the booking to which they said they had availability, we received numerous phone calls and emails to state that the afternoon tea had to be paid for in advance, or if we had a voucher they needed that along with the pin code. I thought this was most odd to have to pay in advance, now we know why!
Upon arrival we were ushered into a room where there were other tables with people seated already eating and were told someone would fetch us and take us through soon.
About 10 minutes later we were called through into another dated looking room with a dozen or more tables in, we were seated right next to the kitchen were staff were constantly rushing in and out of.
Now for the food, we were told there was a selection of sandwiches and cakes followed by a chocolate fondue which would be brought out when we were ready.
After about another 10 minutes the food arrived on a traditional cake stand, which contained possibly about a dozen of tiny cakes, which looked pleasing to the eye and a couple of rock hard scones with jam and clotted cream.
On the top rack there were 8 finger type sliced sandwiches which to be fair tasted ok but nothing special.
What I did find most odd was the amount of cakes which were presented was in an excess to the amount of tiny sandwich slices. We also had a tiny basket of chips served with about a dozen chips in.
We didn’t eat the mass of cakes so we then decided to try the fondue, this was disgusting, it consisted of a bowl of bitter tasting chocolate accompanied with chunks of pineapple, banana slices and marshmallows.
On the whole I can say we’ve had better afternoon tea at a garden centre for less cost with a better atmosphere.
We left dissatisfied and will definitely not be returning.
The cost of the afternoon tea was £22.95 each and was not worth the money.

My boyfriend booked this hall as a surprise, he wanted something different to the norm of Premier inns we usually stay in and it was to celebrate an anniversary. He was impressed with the photos and location online so booked a room for £142 plus booking a reservation for dinner the night we arrive.
Upon arrival driving up towards the hall I had a sinking feeling, the appearance was run down the side building attached to the hall looked like a block of budget shallets and the car park was uneven and messy. Inside we was greeted at reception and told where our room was handed over the key and off we went. The building was listed which is appreciated but nowhere was a sign it was being looked after. Entering our room I was shook. The room itself was HUGE and it had tried to be filled with what looked like house clearence furniture. Again understanding the building was old and listed we went to close the windows that had been left open and they didn't. The seals between the pains of glass were black with mould and the wooden frames rotting only to be covered in white paint to rott through. Some of the windows had a clear gap meaning the air from outside was getting into the room. (see photos for window) That wasn't even the worst part of the windows there were Ladybirds everywhere! Some alive crawling on the window sills, some climbing along the wall of the bed and most dead and crispy inside the windows and on the floor. Once we started looking we couldn't unsee. I counted 20 plus ladybirds dead and alive throughout the entire room. (see photos) We were gutted. I was upset that my boyfriend had booked this as a surprise and had spent a considerable amount of money for this. After finding faults in other parts of the room like toenails on the carpet by the bed, more dead bugs in the bathroom and stained towels and marked sofas we headed downstairs to enquire. We were greeted by an absolute cold answer of 'nothing we can do it's a listed building' I continued by saying the room wasn't obviously cleaned before arrival to which I was shot down with a quick answer of 'yes it has' a bar staff member was then asked to go and get the 'mould spray' and hoover our room. Once he got into our room he wasn't impressed with the job that the cleaners had done. After we went back into the room there was still dead bugs and a toenail in the corner I didn't want to take my shoes off. After a few hours now of not knowing what to do and ringing surrounding hotels we couldn't find anything. Last minute we found a room at a holiday Inn and without hesitation we had to take it. We went back to the unwelcoming reception and said we was leaving could we please be refunded. They were not very apologetic and agreed to us leaving 'a refund will be done shortly' not trusting they would issue a full refund as id been looking at previous reviews I asked for the refund to be issued Infront of us and a print out for confirming so this was clearly unexpected for them but they delivered on that. We left with heavy hearts but we could not of stayed there any longer. Currently waiting on the refund into the bank.

This is not a review for Haughton Hall Hotel I have never stayed
However I am a member of the leisure club. The facilities have never been great but now the changing rooms are disgusting and certainly not worth the membership
The spray that is put on the shower cubicle glass is peeling off on all three cubicles and now you can see straight through. Only one hairdryer is working and this is a very old poor performance one. All of the hooks are broken in the cubicles so nowhere to hang towels etc. The pool is very nice but very difficult to get down the steps if you are infirm, it needs a handrail, very unsafe. The gym is adequate, however something is always broken. Two of the treadmill machines were not in use today. There are water machines in both the pool and the gym but never any cups, so useless
My membership ends in June, I will not be renewing

My family and I stayed one night at this lovely old hotel. We had read the previous reviews with trepidation but we needn’t have worried. The staff were welcoming and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Ok, the decor is a bit dated but in keeping with the style of the grand building. We ate dinner at a restaurant in Shifnal as the hotel restaurant (due to Covid-19) was closing at 8.30 pm. When we returned staff were quite happy to serve us all drinks in the bar. Breakfast the next morning was well-cooked and not at all greasy and the waiting staff were attentive and happy to engage in a laugh and a joke. All in all a successful stay and even our two children (aged 21 and 20) gave it the thumbs up! Would definitely return.

I made a complaint and so did my partner! I’ve had no response yet but my partner has! What a response!

Good Morning

We have just arrived home after a 1 night stay with you. What can I say… I am disappointed, embarrassed and upset.

My partner booked a last minute room with you as a surprise for me for our anniversary. When I arrived the building looked beautiful.

Upon arrival We checked in with a girl at reception and we were told where the bar area was and the dining room area was and what time food service was in the evening.

We sat and enjoyed a couple of drinks in the bar and at 6.45pm we went to go get some food from the dining area, only to be told that we couldn’t get food as we had to book it 48 hours in advance as you only had 1 chef on and were short staffed. (how could we have booked 48 hours beforehand on a last minute deal). The lady was so rude and basically ordered us out the restaurant which was an embarrassment.

I went to reception and said can we order room service instead as there was a menu left in our room saying we can order up until 8.30pm, to which I was told no again. The lady on reception then had the cheek to say, are you struggling to go and drive and get food? I left the reception in tears.

In the end we ordered in food from a near by restaurant as we had both had 2 drinks at the bar so could not legally drive.

This morning we woke up and left without breakfast as We assumed we had to book that 48 hours in advance too and in all honesty I did not want to be humiliated again in front of people in the restaurant.

We had travelled over 2 hours to stay the night with you for what should have been a lovely anniversary night away but instead turned into a complete nightmare.

I would not recommend you and I feel the £81 paid was not worth the visit to just stay in the room with our ordered in food.

I do not want other people to have the experience I had so may I suggest you inform guests before they arrival if they have to book food in advance! Not that I’ve ever heard of having to book in advance at a hotel.

Regards

Mary Guest & Philip Hunt

Response from Haughton Hall, Other at Haughton Hall
Responded 7 Oct 2021
In response to your review, I have to point out that most of it was untrue and in fact it was Mr Hunt that caused the hotel receptionist to be so upset by his uncontrollable abusive attitude towards her when she explained that the restaurant was full on the night you stayed. Luckily for the receptionist, a table in the restaurant of off duty policemen heard Mr Hunt shouting at her and came to her rescue and said they had never heard such vile abuse before and he should have been ashamed of himself for losing it like that when told there was no food available. We do not tolerate abuse aimed at the hotel staff, especially by guests in the drunken state you appeared to be in, and we believe that was the reason you both didn't come down to breakfast or even to reception the morning after your embarrassing performance. Maybe consider staying at home for your next anniversary in future rather than put another hotel through such an abusive episode again as you would not be welcome back at Haughton at any cost again.

Just had a 1 night stop with a red letter day deal. Started with the morning in the spa with a very pleasant back massage, swim and daughter even used the sauna, all perfectly fine.
The afternoon tea was good and very filling, lots for all tastes, all served by attentive and friendly staff.
Our room was ready at 2pm, and we were given as requested a quiet twin room. Dear oh dear. I was ready for the dated room as per all the other trip advisor reviews but a mattress where I could feel every coil/ spring and then offered no support that I actually felt the divan base when sitting on it was totally unacceptable ( I am under 9 stone! ).
Called reception to ask for a actress topper but was offered a change of room . This was much better, only dodgy thing in that room was the mouldy shower curtain, so we kept our distance from that !!
Evening meal was very tasty, we had the braised beef and gnocchi as our mains, well presented too. Breakfast could not fault again with lots of choice, some healthy and some not so... but hey we were on a treat weekend. Yet again the staff were friendly and worked hard, had they even go home to sleep?
So the rooms were the only let down, really in dire need of a change. This seems to be agreed by many guests, though the owners never seem to reply to any of the negative comments do they even care. Because of this we would not use the hotel rooms again, but may visit for a meal.
Thanks to all the staff involved in our stay.

From the outside, the hotel and grounds are beautiful, but when you get inside, it is like walking into a very depressing old people's home. It has no atmosphere at all. On arriving, the staff were very rude, that is when you found any staff as there was never anyone about. There was major work going on so no bar or lounge, so no drinks during the day. if you needed the toilet, you had to go back to your room as the toilets near the entrance were for non residents only !! The food was very basic, could have got exactly the same in a motorway service station. Meat served at evening meal was so cheap and not good at all. Vegetations are offered 1 choice. Bedroom was not touched (stayed for 2 nights) so did not have clean cups or teabags. Had to go searching for toilet roll.
The only bright star in the place was staff member Josh, who was lovely and so helpful - felt really sorry for him as obviously not getting any support from anyone.
Pool booking was ok, husband stated that the chap working the pool was very nice
The hotel needs a huge injection of cash and the staff need training. Will not be back ever.

Response from Neil Gray, Other at Haughton Hall
Responded 3 Aug 2020
Having been closed for 4 months and re-opening recently with few customers initially, limited staffing, opening hours and services as advertised on the website for many weeks, your review shows that you did not bother to research the hotel site before booking, and it's almost as if you had not noticed the COVID-19 virus had decimated the business world, and temporary standards and measures have had to be introduced to open the doors again! We have been very clear that the hotel bar and restaurant were not open initially in the daytime and more services would be added as business returned, so your comments do not reflect the discounted rates and service levels that should have been expected. We do not service rooms for stayover guests, as is now the industry standard to protect the housekeeping staff in particular, and I'm sure you could have managed to ask for more teabags or for clean cups if you didn't feel you were able to wash your own dirty ones up? The public toilets have signage to ask residents to use the facilities in their rooms so we try to limit contact between people as part of our COVID risk assessment and this makes perfect sense to me, so I'm surprised you don't understand that either? We do have a reduced menu available for dinner with lower numbers of residents, but still receive great food comments generally, so don't think your feedback is fair but we do have at least 2 vegetarian dishes on this menu so unsure why you thought there was only one? Glad though that your husband was able to book for the pool, but maybe consider next time, that the hugely discounted rate you were on was because the hotel was not fully operational after such a long time being closed, and then your expectations might be met! As business improves and we all get used to the different measures in place to operate the hotel, hopefully most guests will appreciate the work effort everyone has put on to keep the business alive in these difficult times!
