"Just imagine coming home after a long hike over the moors to a whirlpool bath or a roaring fire." The Devon Longhouse with adjacent barns and court yard has an air of rural France. Situated on the edge of Exmoor, 4 miles from the picturesque town of Dulverton, and within easy access to both coasts. The farmhouse is set within 190 acres of pasture land and is approached via a private single track lane allowing peace and seclusion with lovely views. This is a non-working farm and offers a safe environment for children and pets. Both cottages, featuring ancient beams and exposed stonework, have been thoughtfully converted and are very clean and well equipped. Anstey Mills Thatched Cottage (65 sqm – one galleried bedroom) is a recent addition offering a luxurious whirlpool bath and under floor heating, being detached but near the owner’s 16th century Devon Longhouse. Anstey Mills Cottage (175 sqm – 3 bedrooms), one end of the Longhouse, is a fully self-contained comfortable and spacious holiday home with king size four poster bed and wood burner. Both cottages combined can cater for parties of up to 10/11.

This summer, I had the unique opportunity to reside in the charming cottages near Exmoor National Park for several weeks. As part of my university's study abroad program, the owner, Doris, graciously accepted me to assist her in maintaining her picturesque property and exploring the serene countryside around the quaint town of Dulverton.
When I arrived, Doris made me feel welcome and right at home. Her open and warm manner and numerous insider tips for hidden gems in the surrounding area, such as the secluded waterfall at Tarr Steps, made my stay all the more enjoyable.
The cottages offer everything you can imagine. They are super cozy and clean and have a charm with rustic elements such as the exposed wooden beams or the tremendous old fireplaces. At the same time, it has everything modern: a well-equipped kitchen, a cozy bed, and comfortable seating, as well as a good hot shower and even a whirlpool bath—a wonderful place to relax. During my stay, I helped Doris with various jobs around her astonishing property, which connected me even more with the place and its features. I spent afternoons trimming the hedge of the fairytale driveway, mowing the lawn, or taking her sweet dog, Ebony, for walks. The little jobs got me used to the unique rhythm of the place, and Doris' constant gratitude for my work always made me feel good. The scenery around the cottages is breathtaking. You can find everything from sheep and cows to unique trees and beautiful plants on the green hills. The peaceful surroundings, with their serene beauty and tranquil atmosphere, make it easy to unwind from the pace and intensity of daily life. Whether with a cup of coffee or tea on the patios of the cottages or a walk through the countryside, I felt an enormous sense of calm in this place that I had never experienced before. My time in this place was a great success thanks to Doris' open and warm manner, incredible patience, and pleasant, calm nature. Thanks to her expertise and experience, I got to know places around Exmoor that I would never have seen otherwise.
This experience was truly transformative. I departed with gratitude and a newfound admiration for the region's natural beauty. I wholeheartedly recommend this place to anyone seeking a peaceful retreat to reconnect with nature and enjoy a genuine, warm stay in a delightful cottage! Very active and sporty people can also find much to do in this area, especially if they're into running, hiking, or biking!
I look forward to the day when I can return to this little oasis and experience its tranquility and beauty again.

Compliments and all the best wishes from Niklas

We spent a week staying in the thatched cottage and the bigger cottage with our three adult children, their spouses and our 4 young granddaughters. It was our first holiday together since March 2020 when COVID hit and Anstey Mills Cottages were a perfect venue. The cottages are very well equipped, comfortable and homely and Doris is so welcoming and helpful. The surrounding countryside is beautiful and the children loved playing on the large grassy mound behind the house. The weather wasn't wonderful but it didn't matter at all as we just loved being in the cottages. I would throughly recommend Anstey Mills Cottages for a relaxing holiday and we will definitely return.

We have just returned from a 1 week stay in the thatched cottage. Was welcomed by Doris with scones warming in the oven and a lovely cream tea. The cottage was spotlessly clean and had everything we needed. Bed was comfy and I especially liked the nice heavy curtains so the sun didn't wake us too early! Bonus to find such a nice place that actually allow you to take your dogs too! The gardens and surrounding countryside were beautiful and was just what we needed to escape the hustle and bustle of town. If you need a complete break from a busy life - please come here, because it is so relaxing and so nice to escape from the internet and emails and texts etc etc! We did get a signal on the balcony but to be honest I didn't actually want any disturbances. Our young daughter enjoyed having some freedom to play in the fields and in the shallow stream and thoroughly enjoyed being outdoors (and didn't seem to miss i-pad and technology!). She loved playing with Bruce the resident dog and he was no trouble to us at all. We went to The Bridge Inn pub at Dulverton which was really lovely. Had nice food and a very welcoming environment to both dogs and children - could have stayed in there all evening as had a really nice ambiance. Enjoyed a nice walk on the moors with lots of fresh air and took a picnic. Thoroughly enjoyed the whole week - lots to do in surrounding villages and towns with nice shops and days out, but for us we wanted a complete break to just take time out and get back to nature. Feel totally relaxed and cannot wait to return. I can also recommend the large cottage too as Doris showed us around and it is beautiful. Very light, airy and spacious with log burner and would make a great place to visit with family or friends.

You feel better after a week here.A peaceful place with a good combination of the old and the new.The owner who lives in a neighbouring cottage really does ensure that you have everything you need and indeed i cannot recall a better equipped holiday home.
Whilst the cottage is situated in a quiet valley ,it is only some 5-10 minutes to Dulvertton where there is a reasonable selection of eating places
The guest book is a littany of praise which is well justified--try it

We stayed in the thatched cottage this time, although we have stayed in the larger cottage too on previous visits; both are beautifuly equipped and presented. We know the area well, but these cottages enhance the experience even further. The cottages are off the beaten track and so our holiday was quiet and peaceful, but Dulverton and the rest of this part of Somerset/Devon are easily accessible. We try to go back to this part of the country every year or so and wouldn't dream of staying anywhere else.

We stayed for a long weekend with our 2 dogs in the Thatched Cottage, which was well furnished and comfortable. The general surrounding was very tranquil and there were fantastic walks just behind the cottage as it backed onto the moors. We loved coming back to the comforts of the cottage every evening and my dogs claimed their spot infront of the fireplace. Doris was a wonderful and welcoming host and even had scones in the oven for our arrival! We can't wait to go back.

Dear Wing, Thank you so much for taking the time to write the review and for your kind words. It was lovely having you as our guests. So pleased, the dogs too found the cottage welcoming, and should you visit us again, we hope the new member of our family - Ebony, the black cocker spaniel - will enjoy having some friends to play.

How can anyone not enjoy a break at Anstey Mills Cottages? As soon as you arrive, Doris the owner, with a cheerful greeting and enquiry as to how the journey went, meets you. A Devon Cream Tea arrives out of nowhere and the relaxing begins in the most pleasant way possible. On entering the cottage it is immediately apparent as to how clean and well kept the accommodation is. There is every possible item to make the stay a joy. From a fully equipped kitchen, to the most amazing spa bath. All the linen that you could want is available and there are gadgets aplenty from a ceiling fan in the bedroom to Wi-Fi for those that want it. None of which intrude on the charm and original features of the cottage, such as the thatched roof and exposed beams that give it a warm familiar feeling of bygone times.

The cottage is located at the end of a small-unmade private drive that descends the Exmoor hills and makes the experience feel part of the exquisite countryside and away from the bustle of the outside world. There is a bridleway that leads away from the property so there is instant access to the surrounding country on public rights of way. Dogs are very welcome here, we took our two dogs and they had as much of a holiday as we did. Bruce, the resident dog, who shared his toys and played with our two so nicely, made them welcome. He even came on the walks with us.

It is a short drive to the local town of Dulverton for provisions and just about everything is available there. The clotted cream is wonderful. There are numerous public houses and tearooms all across the moor and a car ride or walk can always be interrupted for a good lunch. (The Sportsman at Sandyways is highly recommended, but you may need to book for an evening meal at the weekends)

On returning to Anstey Mills Cottage, there are many places to sit out in the quiet and reflect on the day or read a book, venturing back inside when the sun goes down.

This is a quiet and romantic setting for couples of any age.

A secret hideaway that is a perfect sanctuary from the rest of the world.

What a wonderful place to stay with a family! We stayed here with 4 adults and 2 kids and we all had our own beds and there were enough bathrooms/showers. The kitchen was well stocked, the entire cottage was super clean, and it was in such a great location. It was so nice to fix a meal here and eat at our leisure.

I would highly recommend staying at Anstey Mills Cottages - we definitely will if we go back!

Such a wonderful, cosy and tranquil cottage. Very much off the beaten track, so very relaxing and peaceful. The Thatched Cottage, is a little gem and there is everything, you could possibly need in it. Very comfortable super King bed and comfortable settee in the sitting room. We loved the decking, that leads off of the bedroom. Such a beautiful place to sit, with a stunning view. Doris, our host and owner, can only be described as delightful. She was extremely warm and welcoming. If you want somewhere, to totally get away from it all, this little cottage is perfect. Highly recommend.
