We chose The Walnut Tree for New Years Eve because it had some good reviews and was very reasonably priced. We stayed the night and the room was fine.
The meal started ok with an amuse bouche followed by a tasty seafood bisque. Unfortunately our starters just never appeared. We didn’t realise this until the dessert course-by that time we didn’t fancy duck salad.
The main course, Somerset Beef, was poor. The beef was more school dinners than fine dining. The dauphinois potato stack was raw at the top and only became edible lower down.
The carafe of water had a distinct tang of chlorine. I asked the waiter to change it but the new water tasted exactly the same.
We enjoyed the casino and disco. I guess you get what you pay for but we won’t be returning.

Response from WalnutTreeHotel, General Manager at The Walnut Tree Hotel
Responded 14 Jan 2020
Dear Geoff Thank you for taking the time to review your experience of The Walnut Tree, we value all feedback both good and bad and take any comments extremely seriously. Regarding the quality of your meal I would like to sincerely apologise that we failed to meet your exceptions on this occasion and that there were a number of failings that impacted your experience. I have fed these comments back to all concerned to ensure that we can learn from them in the future. Regarding your missed started I believe that I had the opportunity to discuss this with you the following morning and I am glad that I had the opportunity to offer a small token gesture which I hope went some way towards making up for this error. Finally thank you for your kind comments regarding the disco and the casino and I am glad that these elements of the evening continue to be popular with guests. If you are ever in the area again I hope you will consider revisiting The Walnut Tree. If you do please do make yourself known to me personally so that I can make every effort to ensure your stay with us is perfect throughout. Kind Regards Daniel

The Walnut tree staff were very helpful and listened to our particular requirements. The dining room was bright and well decorated and all Covid-19 safety measures were reassuring. We felt perfectly safe at all times. The hotel provided delicious food and excellent discreet yet friendly service. Our guests were vey impressed and we were delighted with the menu, quality of food and value for money.

After moving a key worker from Norfolk to Devon we stayed here overnight and we cannot believe how spacious the rooms were along with being so clean. We’d like to thank the management for the pleasant arrival and it’s a shame that we could not take advantage of the restaurant and bar facilities due to the current situation. I highly recommend this place ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

After a 6 hour journey to get here, appreciate that's not the hotel's fault, we arrived to find out fully confirmed interconnecting room (we have 2 children below 5) had already been allocated to someone else. Not a great start!
After 20 mins, and a duty manager audibly telling the receptionist she was too busy for this, we were allocated a 'room'. I say a room but actually a hotel room with 2 beds in a cupboard. A slight exaggeration but not far from the truth.
So finally in the room we try to get the kids ready for bed....bath time. The bath ends having fixed multiple things in the bathroom that have fallen off. They clearly have just been put back in place rather than have been fixed by the hotel....I suspect not even checked by the hotel staff but rather by previous unfortunate guests.
Now sleep time - I say sleep time but mean the long night of very little sleep! Mattresses are awful ( I will never understand why hotels scrimp on the quality of mattresses. Decent mattresses cost the equivalent of 1, maybe 2 nights room hire, just send the money for goodness sake!) and dig into our bodies all night. The walls are so thin that you can virtually see the outline of the person walking down the corridor! Our room is located just next to either the kitchen extractor fans (which stayed on all night) or some sort of generator, which again stayed on all night.
I'm currently laid in bed, in pain, and feel compelled to write this review.
What a hideous experience!! The food was nice though, but will confirm that over breakfast.

The website menu gave us the incentive to book here. Baked salmon, crushed new potatoes and roast baby fennel with a concasse of tomato, Olives and capers was on offer and ticked the boxes for me. The actual menu offered baked salmon with crushed potatoes, roasted fennel dressed with Olives, tomatoes and capers. Fair enough thry didn't want the work of skinning and deseeding tomatoes for a concasse. I still ordered. What I got was a very nice piece of salmon, nicely cooked, roast baby fennel, crushed potatoes, that hadn't seen a hint of seasoning and half a tub of Mediterranean Olives with garlic and slivers of red pepper. The Olives completely overwhelmed the dish ruining what could have been, with a little thought and care a very nice meal. Our other main dish was sausage and mash with onion gravy. The sausages were very nice but the onion gravy included a pile of onion marmalade on top of the tower of sausage and mash. Again the sweetness and sharpness from the onion marmalade ruined the dish and was not mentioned on the menu.
The dessert of whiskey and orange bread and butter pudding was very good. However because of delays in service we ate much later than our digestion are used to and paid the price later with indigestion and sickness.
Booking a table for 6.30 when a restaurant opens in expectation of an early dinner is not, I think, unreasonable. Our order wasn't taken until after 6.50 and it was past 7.30 before our main courses arrived. A party of 7 were served beforehand and it was evident these were commercial residents from the same organisation. The hotel was obviously short-staffed and those staff were having problems as the dishes were coming out one at a time. Having been in the trade there were definite shortcomings in organisation but with a little thought these could be mitigated.

Had a great four night stay. Although situated by the side of the road in North Petherton the hotel has a huge car park and we could not hear any traffic noise as all the rooms are at the back.
All the staff were very friendly and welcoming and although at times busy, they always had time to say hello.
The rooms were most impressive, being much larger than expected and nicely furnished and clean. We also appreciate the reduced charge for the single occupied room which a lot of hotels don’t offer.
Food was great both at breakfast and dinner served in a spacious and attractive restaurant. We found a good choice of competitively priced dishes on the menu and specials board so we’re able to choose different dishes each day.
Well done Daniel and all your team for looking after us so well and we will be pleased to recommend you to family and friends.

We had our wedding at The Walnut Tree Hotel on Saturday. We really had a fantastic time. Our guests travelled from around the world so we needed plenty of accommodation. We hired all the rooms (37). We had an afternoon wedding at North Petherton Church. Walked across the road to a red carpet laid out and the hotel staff waiting for us to arrive. Greeted with welcome drinks and a saxophone player. We decorated the venue with what we wanted (lot’s of help from staff) we chose the option of a roast beef dinner which was absolutely stunning (so many comments made by our guests about how lovely it was) chocolate followed for pudding. The staff are so helpful and really made us ALL feel so welcome. The rooms are really large and immaculate. We all sat and had breakfast together which was so lovely. Daniel the general manager and Cheryl the managers were so helpful and really took the pressure off. Thank you so much you really did an amazing job xx

Having stayed at the Walnut Tree a couple of times over a period of 30 years, we thought we would go back for a short break, particularly as it offered excellent value for money over and above other options that were just too expensive or lack of availability.

We decided to go all out and booked the Jubilee suite with the separate lounge (the best room in the hotel). Having read other reviews, I was expecting some 'dated' fixtures and fittings but the bathroom had gold rails with lovely bottle green taps. As different things had broken over the years, they have been replaced so you have a nice 'avocado' bathroom suite with white toilet pan, shower was originally gold and now part of it replaced with silver etc. A previous reviewer had commented on this 3 years ago and apparently the bathrooms were being refurbished then but now being blamed on COVID and lack of income.
The sofa in the lounge area was also extremely uncomfortable and needs replacing but forgot to mention this when checking out. The bed was super comfortable and huge.

Service was slow in the bar for food but this was due to lack of staff rather than the staff not working hard. Quality of food was excellent and good value so no need to go out and find a restaurant to eat in.

I do believe much of our negative experience was down to the constant changes that the hospitality business has experienced and staff and management are trying to balance service with limited expenditure at this challenging time.

Overall, we had a welcoming and comfortable stay and accept that the price paid did reflect the dated offering.

After a disastrous start to what should have been a holiday at a hotel in Bideford, we'd decided to turn around an come home.

Whilst travelling back, after 7pm I might add, we found this little gem called The Walnut Hotel. Situated just a mile or so off J24 of the M5, we were allowed to view the room thanks to Daniel, and chose to stay the night.
The room was fresh and clean, unlike the hotel room we'd planned to stay at in Bideford.

Daniel and Daisy were very welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. We were booked in to our room and able to sit down to a lovely meal in the restaurant downstairs,...all at short notice.

After what had been a long, tiring and stressful day, we were able to have a nice hot shower and bath.

A restful night's sleep was had on comfortable beds, followed by a nice hot full English breakfast, tea, toast. My wife had the vegetarian option, which was delicious. The breakfast staff very courteous and polite. We paid our compliments to the chef.

The portion sizes of the evening meal and breakfast were more than adequate for even the most hungry traveller.

We have decided to stay an extra night and explore the area a little more.

If you're on a long journey, or wish to break up a long journey, or just want somewhere close to Taunton, don't hesitate to book into this little gem of a hotel, where you'll be assured of a warm welcome, friendly staff and bright, fresh/ clean rooms and good food,...the latter having won awards for culinary excellence the past few years running.

Andy & Tracey, Notts.

I stayed here for 5 nights as a solo traveller visiting Wincanton, Taunton and Cheltenham races. The hotel was super convenient for the M5, easy to find with plentiful parking onsite. Located in a small, quite village on the outskirts of Bridgwater I was also able to visit Glastonbury, Wells and The Cheddar Gorge all within a 30 minute drive.

The hotel check-in was quick and friendly and I was very impressed with my room. Spacious, super-clean and very peaceful, it was ideal for some horse race form studying! The king-size bed was very comfortable and I slept well on every night I was here.

I never ate at the hotel but the menu looked reasonably priced and offered a good range of meals. A Tesco Express is opposite, well stocked and well served. Two petrol garages are within a 5 minute drive.

So, if you're looking for a hotel that is top notch for it's grading, great value for money (I paid £60 a night) and in an excellent location with no worries on parking, neighbourhood etc, then look no further. I would definitely stay here again.

There was in the master suite so would expect there to be in all rooms. The hairdrier is small and you have to keep you thumb on the on button when drying your hair. Have decided to take my own hairdrier away from now on as most hotels have c**p hairdriers
