We have been visiting Box Hill and having a Lunch in this nice and familiar Pub. Very comfortable place, warmy and friendly. Good food and better staff. If you want to have space i would recomend you to book a table in advance.

Have lived in the area for 25 years and strangely never visited this pub/hotel as each time we drove by in was busy. Tried again and this time were able to get a seat in the outer part of the restaurant area that accepts well behaved dogs. We ordered food from the bar menu plus two beers (Brakespears). The beer... I booked our Christmas Do for Dorking British Subaqua Club, there were 26 of us. Matthew the Manager could not have been more helpful from the outset. The menu was excellent and scattered for all taste and dietary requirements. The room that we were provided was outstanding, it was nice to all be sat around one table as so often... More

It's hard to fault this place. A beautifully traditional pub in a lovely location for Boxhill and a visit to nearby Denbies vineyard. We spent the whole afternoon lounging in-front of the fire and chatting, looked after attentively for drinks and snacks before dinner. Dinner ... divine, all of us enjoyed dinner. Again extremely well cooked, well served and the... More

Found this place using a 'half-way between' website as it was just that, half way between where we live in Kent and friends travelling from Newbury, so decided to book an evening meal and an overnight stay. A very pleasant surprise indeed to discover just how nice this place was. Taken to our accommodation, the gatehouse, by a very nice... More

It took 45 mins for us to be asked about a drink once we had been seated at our table. The waiter then had to come back as one of the drinks they didn't have. The menu looks great on paper, but no flexibility to swap one type of potatoes for another! The food was either very rich, even when... More

A group of 12 of us stopped by on Saturday, hoping to grab a few refreshments during a hike around Box hill which was arranged for my friend's birthday. The man behind the bar was very rude and refused to serve us due to us not booking for such a large group. This was despite the fact that tables were... More

Unfortunately our kitchen was at full capacity, everything we cook is from fresh and only a certain number of covers can be served. The tables were not empty but reserved and customers were due in within 15 minutes of you asking for them. It was actually myself who suggested the King William to sit outside as it had lovely views!... More

Stayed for a couple of nights as we were in the area for a wedding. Our room was lovely with a nice view of the village church and in my opinion about as good as you are likely to get in a pub. Breakfast was traditional and excellent made with quality ingredients. All staff encountered were friendly and professional. In... More

We arrived to the aroma of the real log fire burning - very welcoming, and enjoyed a lovely lunch in the main dining room, 7 of us in total. Very good service, excellent food, good specials selection and a nice varied selection on the main lunch menu. I had the Seabass which was delicious. All in all a lovely relaxed... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Running Horses is a perfect country inn at the heart of picturesque Mickleham village in the Surrey hills. Step inside and you’ll discover one of the most charming places to eat and stay in Surrey. Dating back to the 16th century, it was once a coaching house. Back in those days, the inn’s clientele provided rich pickings for highwaymen. Thankfully, things are a little more peaceful these days, but some traditions live on. You’ll still find wonderful home-cooked British food, made with the freshest ingredients, accompanied by a wine list to compare with the top restaurants. The Running Horses has been family owned and run for the last fifteen years. And because we’re not part of a chain, the inn is full of character and individual touches. You’re guaranteed a warm welcome from the moment you enter the cosy bar with its roaring log fire. ... more   less
