I travel a lot for work, and have a reasonable expectation for budget accommodation. I need to feel safe and I want cleanliness. When I found this hotel online elsewhere, the pictures looked great and the overall score is good, but I have to concur with so many of these poor ratings and reviews. The place is shabby and tired, and my mattress was also ‘like a lumpy sack of potatoes’ - I can honestly say it was the worst I’ve ever slept on and I felt embarrassed for anyone I know to be aware that I was staying in such poor accommodation. BUT I don’t like to put down a hard-working small business, and poor reviews can really effect revenue, so especially now; how could they then ever afford to refurbish? Despite this probably being the worst accommodation I’d ever stayed in: the welcome was warm and helpful, it was clean, and when I said I couldn’t stay in the room that smelled of stale smoke; with no fuss they found me another room, plus I slept well because I was very tired. I just don’t understand the huge variety of reviews and ratings... is it because friends and family make up good ones to compensate for the terrible ones? I spoke to the staff at the time who assured me that they would be looking into my mattress advice from room 5. I sincerely hope they can make the improvements needed and get on track to reflect the bizarrely 4 star rating displayed on reception and the nice photos. Good luck.

We usually stay at the travelodge but some some reason it was too expensive for Tuesday in December. We managed a good deal for the Carlton for one night. There is limited parking on site and additional off street parking a short walk away. The room looks a bit tired, the shower was bit hit and miss (no mixer) and too low for me (6ft 3). There were plenty of 13Amp sockets to connect phones etc. The bed was ok. The good bits The staff were very helpful fresh milk to make tea, extra towels and pillows. The bad bits. On the morning of departure the room went dark and all the power was off, luckily we had showered and made tea. The power didn't come back on before we left. The Wifi didn't extend to the rooms at the back of the property though the manager did offer us a room that did.

Reluctantly got put here while working away for week, safe to say, I’ll,never stay here again. Upon arrival you get greeted by several people, all of which don’t speak good English at all, making check-in rather difficult. Rooms are very small and have a really strange musky smell and have tiny beds that have seen better days, felt like a bag of potatoes when sleeping on it. The shower wasn’t sealed properly meaning that after a shower you step out into a floor full of water, the bathroom is always freezing due to the very poor heater in there. My towel wasn’t changed for the whole week while I was there, and after asking on the second day, I had a reply of ‘okay, we’ll sort this for you’ I cam back to see the same towel just placed on the radiator. This happened every single day. Thankfully I was passing a shop and popped in to pick up a towel of my own. DO NOT STAY HERE!
