Widely acclaimed as Britain's most beautiful railway station, Petworth's former train station is now one of the country's most unusual destination hotels. Step back in time and enjoy a romantic and unique break in one of our restored Pullman railway carriages or stay in the old Station House. In summer, enjoy our fine breakfast on the platform, overlooking our exotic garden or, in winter, by a roaring fire in our former Waiting Room, with its 20ft vaulted ceiling. The Old Railway Station has something for every discerning traveller, looking for something different.

My husband and I had a truly wonderful stay at The Old Railway Station on 19th December 2024, staying in Flora 2 and enjoying the festive menu in the Princess Ena dining car that evening.
On arrival, we received a warm welcome at Reception and were shown through to our room, with the lounge/breakfast area in the Old Station House and the dining car both being pointed out to us.
The accommodation and decor in Flora 2 was lovely. The space had been used well, with a King size bed, lots of room in the seating area and a very nice, modern bathroom with both bath and shower cubicle. We were able to relax in the comfy chairs and have a cup of tea, before enjoying a very nice shower prior to our evening meal. We did wander across to the Station House to sit by the fire, enjoying a Pullman beer and the lovely Christmas tree and decorations.
The meal in Princess Ena was superb - excellent flavours, nice twists on a festive theme and beautifully presented. The service in the dining car was also superb, definitely befitting the service one would expect with a Pullman coach and we very much enjoyed the whole experience. In addition to the food and the service, we very much admired the hard work that had gone into the restoration of the Princess Ena - she is such a beautiful carriage, with amazing woodwork.
After our pleasant evening and sleep, we wandered down to the Station House for our breakfast the following morning, which was a traditional Full English and was nicely cooked and very tasty. We were well looked after, with offers of more tea and toast if we wanted.
Sadly, come 11 o'clock, we had to check out and say goodbye, but we have very happy memories of this stay and have already booked to stay again in June 2025.

Just wonderful. The cleanliness, colours, ambience and presentation in the old waiting room capped off a wonderful stay. The rooms are converted old Pullman carriages that we found to be very clean and presented well. The willow wooden blinds are a design of the highest quality, the television is a smart tv giving you access to streaming services and the bathroom has a high powered shower. The bed is a double that fits the narrow carriage well that was very comfortable but we are used to something bigger so was awake earlier than usual. In the night hours the area is completely silent and we didn’t hear a peep from the other carriages.
The breakfast was wonderful and just the right size. We had an English breakfast each cooked to perfection. When we took our seats we had a jar of fresh fruits each and lovely fresh orange juice alongside a cafetière of rich coffee. This was all consumed to the sounds of music from the 1940’s whilst an open fire kept the room warm. Breakfast appears to be staggered for each room in 15 minute intervals on a first come, first served basis. I think this is to ensure it is freshly cooked.
Two very minor observations -
1. The shower gel is supplied in a sachet. 2. The shower/bath isn’t the easiest to use. Couldn’t find a cold temp so had to let the red hot water cool for a while before jumping in.
I would definitely stay again and plan on doing so in the summer months to enjoy afternoon tea on the old platform.

Having never experienced an overnight stay in a 'railway carriage', we thought this was worth a try. How lovely, and a wonderful, unusual experience. The 'carriages' have all been refurbished and tastefully/beautifully decorated. We checked in at the 'Station' which is along by the 'carriages'. A very helpful woman took our names and then showed us to our 'carriage' with explaining all the necessary information we needed, including the use of the 'station' with its warm and welcoming stocked log fire. It is also where breakfast is served. Our accommodation was a beautiful double room, lovely linen on a very comfortable double bed. It had a writing desk and chair. A spacious ensuite with plenty of quality towels, soaps etc. There was a small entrance hall with fully stocked tea and coffee makings, with cups/biscuits etc. The breakfast is personal service with a delightful small buffet and wonderfully cooked tasty breakfast with toast and plenty of tea/coffee/soft drinks with nothing too much trouble for the waitress. The area around the 'station' and 'carriages' is well maintained and once the flowers start to bloom again, I imagine the place is even more attractive as well as when they put out the sun beds and umbrellas. There are no evening meals to be had at the 'station', but within 200 yards there is a pub with very nice food, but beware! When our order was being taken for our food we asked about there red wine and the merlot was recommended by staff, so we had a bottle. Not asking at the table how much that red wine would be, we had a nasty shock on paying. Although the meals were a good price, being 'stung' for £30.00 for the wine was a rip-off. I know we should have looked at the wine list to view the pricing, but really?!? The waitress could have said she would bring the wine list knowing the price of the wine was more than usual for a bottle of red wine in a pub. Come on. £30.00. We would definitely not return to that pub on principal, even though the food was good. However, the 'Old Railway Carriages' experience is well worth it.

We had a one night stay at the Old Railway in one of the carriage rooms, with afternoon tea (booked early so we could have dinner later too). It was a freezing December day when we arrived, and a birthday surprise for my wife. The staff were welcoming (and on learning about the birthday, brought a card during afternoon tea).
The afternoon tea was excellent in wonderful cosy surroundings (decked up for Christmas). Breakfast the next morning was also served in the same room, and was faultless. The service on both occasions was friendly and relaxed.
The carriage itself was so quirky and charming. Due to the cold weather the heaters had been put on before we arrived and the bedroom and bathroom was nice and warm throughout our stay. It did get cold near the entrance but theres a thick curtain to keep in the warmth. We had a very peaceful nights sleep and it was so different from usual hotel rooms.
Oh, and we had booked Badgers which was just right on a chilly night with warm atmosphere and excellent pub food and service.
A wonderful experience.

We stayed in the restored classic Pullman train carriages, each converted into 2 en-suite bedrooms. These are fitted out with a good sized double bed. The original paneling and decor has been retained and the room was decorated with period artifacts which gave an authentic character to the whole experience. The carriages stand along the platform next to the station building, where a satisfying breakfast is served in the old waiting room! We had a fabulous dinner her too which was of exceptional quality, created by Chef Jacob and delivered with style by his partner Grace and the team. We can't wait to return to dine here again - perhaps in the dining car when its restoration is complete!

Beautiful landscape with very well maintained grounds. We were checked in and asked what time we’d like to have breakfast and then were shown to our carriage for the night.
As soon as we opened the door an awful damp smell hits you which wasn’t very nice especially as we paid over £200 for the night stay. The carriage could do with a good airing out. The smell maybe because the last time anybody signed the guest book was in 2020.
Really nice idea of sleeping in a train carriage but our night sleep wasn’t the best. The big mahogany bed looked so comfy but it wasn’t ! It took up the whole room which made moving around the room very tight and at times dangerous. We woke up feeling as though we’d slept on the train tracks and not in a bed. However, the shower was nice but sorry the towels were like drying yourselves with sandpaper.
It’s a beautiful looking place and the idea of staying seemed great but it’s not practical or at all comfortable. We couldn’t wait to leave! Do your research before booking which we never did and it’s cost us dearly to stay here which we’re not at all happy about. They’re charging a premium for a 2* stay in a musty and mouldy train carriage.

We were given a voucher as a Xmas gift to stay at The Old Railway Station, and chose to use it to celebrate my partner's birthday.
The Old Railway Station is a very sweet and picturesque location, you get a real feel for the old Edwardian station itself, and six Pullman carriages sit on a short amount of track alongside the platforms. The room was spotless and atmospheric, if a little cramped due to being a railway carriage. The bed was incredibly soft and saggy, it gave both of us a bad back by the morning. There is a hospitality tray with tea, coffee and hot chocolate, but in small quantities, we had to ask for more, and there were no biscuits, cakes or anything else to greet us, despite having mentioned a birthday when booking. Our room only had a tiny cafetière - it wasn't enough for 2 people, and only one sachet of ground coffee was provided. For the price you pay per night in this place, I think they could afford to be a little more generous and welcoming.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, they have kept the old waiting room closed and served breakfast in the carriages. A gorgeous little hamper was delivered to our carriage each morning, along with orange juice and milk, and the hot breakfast buns and little pastries were delicious. We had taken our own ground coffee with us, as no extra tea or coffee was delivered with breakfast, otherwise we'd have had to ask for more yet again! Luckily, the sun was shining on the first morning and we enjoyed eating breakfast on the platform outside our carriage. However on day 2 it was cold and overcast, and there is little room and no table in the carriage to lay out breakfast, we had to put things on the chest of drawers and the bed! Given so many places are managing to open with social distancing measures, I do hope they can find a way to clean and arrange a fairly spacious waiting room back into service, so guests have the option of breakfast in your carriage or there - especially as we move into autumn and winter.
Overall, we did enjoy our visit, the staff were v friendly, and when we asked for more supplies they did come. It definitely felt special & memorable to be in a genuine old Pullman carriage. But for £190 per night, and on a special occasion,, I would expect a little more of a 5* welcome.

Absolutely fantastic stay. The 5 star rating is fully deserved. The staff were all very pleasant and courteous. We stayed two nights in Flora 2 - it was beautifully decorated and wonderfully comfortable whilst keeping the ambience. The bathroom was beautifully clean and well equipped - lovely powerful shower. We had afternoon tea on arrival which was delicious. We were allowed to take the cakes we couldn't manage back to our room for later! We had full English breakfast one morning and continental the other - both were delicious - the continental particularly was extremely varied - ham, cheese, fruit, yoghurt, honey and a boiled egg! On our last evening we had a fantastic dinner in the Pullman car. The food was delicious and the ambience was very gentile and relaxed. When my husband asked for an irish coffee they went out of their way to make one, even though it wasn't on the menu. One of the nicest places we have stayed - we would love to come back.

We stayed here overnight last week to celebrate my husband's birthday and had a wonderful time. The room was spacious, beautifully decorated and furnished and very comfortable, and ambling down the platform to the dining carriage for a delicious meal was a wonderful way to spend the evening. Would highly recommend.

Visited yesterday for a delicious Afternoon Tea. Cakes and scones were delicious! Tea was plentiful and everything served on lovey blue and white china. Our daughter is celiac and was served her gluten free Aternoon Tea on a separate cake stand to avoid contamination. She said it was the best gluten free scone and lemon cake that she has had. The weather was a little cloudy when we arrived so we chose to enjoy the ambiance of the elegant station waiting room and when the sun came out later we sat out on the adjoining flower filled platform looking up towards the Pullman Cars. Highly recommend for Afternoon Tea or for a stay in one of the Pullmans as we have stayed in the past. Thank you to the hosts and staff for treating us so well.
