Pillows to soft ended up with sore neckdisturbed by someone taking dog for walk at 12 30a.m and then again disturbed by plumbing whilst they took a shower. We stayed DBB at Langley Castle last night for our 19th Wedding Anniversary (we were married at Langley Castle and have returned over the years as it is a special place for us). We cannot fault our experience and we feel the castle is better than it has ever been (and we have always loved it!). The staff are incredible. They are friendly, attentive (without being intrusive) and take care to make your stay special. We found everything to be super clean, there were lovely floral decorations and candles and the grounds looked well cared for. The food was absolutely delicious and we both thoroughly enjoyed the dining experience. It was a special meal and a real treat. Thank you to all concerned for giving us more memories to treasure in this wonderful castle.

Dear Margaret In reference to the above Wedding Anniversary Celebration Monday 2 October 2023 DBB Package and the ensuing 8 mail correspondence between Jessica and Us since our initial visit Friday 8 September 2023. Following our enquiry your receptionist Jessica kindly forwarded the possible DDB packages and having caught sight of Langley Castle Fine Dinning Menu offering dinner options subsequently requested on several occasions to enable discussions on alternatives or adjustments for dietary disorders (particularly lactose intolerance) and pre-order our dinner preferences with your chef. However, Jessica reassured us this was not necessary as chef would be able to make the requisite adaptions on the evening hence, we made good our reservation of Room 17 for our anniversary evening celebrating not only our wedding also to encourage my recovery from the stroke I recently suffered promoting confidence, speech improvement, posture, and mobility. Upon our arrival Monday afternoon Jessica greeted us with her usually salutation and the Langley Castle Speil also inviting us to join the castle tour on Tuesday morning after breakfast; Room 17 had been recently cleansed, reasonably presented albeit had not been aired and insufficiently heated as one would expect as the welcoming ambience from such 4* hotel this establishment purports to be. This is where the enchantment ends and the nightmare on Langley Burn begins… …Through our observations as seasoned travellers and previous training with the HCITB (Hotel Catering Industry Board) with specific reference to the board training programme synonymous with John Cleese and the Fawlty Towers scenarios the catalogue of Errors. This series of unfortunate events are presented as Finding of Facts:  Langley Castle Personnel – As Jessica had intimated that we had a dietary prerequisite would we ensure arrival upstairs no later than 1845 hrs to discuss the menu with the bar/waiter and enjoy drinks and canapes prior to dining in the Josephine restaurant. The young waiter had not received any indication of our reservation gave no welcoming salutation, we felt we had just arrived on speculation, however he proceeded to give us menus no exchange or comments clearly seemed untrained in restaurant/bar etiquette, succinctly we asked for our drinks order to be taken as nothing was imminent – when this arrived the Stella Artois was flat and cloudy and no canapes were offered, we asked for the beer to be changed which was done perfunctory no apology. He then said are you ready to order, which we politely did 2 x lemon sole, 1 x lamb rump, 1 x Salmon here was the conjecture when the issues arose highlighting the Langley Castle shortcomings/failures. One of which was, Chef was not 4* could not indeed cook at all rather just place a frozen product into the deep fat fryer.  Management – Enter the duty manager, Hadyn who decided to interject asking chef the same question the waiter had, what constituted the lemon sole to make the stater unsuitable for lactose intolerance which of course was breadcrumbs - the packet would provide the detail! Hadyn returned to the table with a raised voice shouted to me the reason (the whole of the room stopped; the pin dropped, and all of the prospective diners were staring at me) realising he had achieved the desired effect intimidation through publicly humiliation then told me to choose something else like the vegetarian option. I indicated that I would forgo the starter. At this the agitated arrogant Hadyn then thrust another menu in my face asserting that I must make a choice, now being close to tears, never in my life have I been treated in this manner as a guest/customer thus I declined to speak (I could not being distraught, frightened and terrified due to the ravages and damage the stoke had taken on me) – the waitress was called to take me downstairs to the Josephine dinning room where I was left alone not knowing what on earth was going on just wishing to go home and never go out ever again) I cried.  Readdress – Unbeknown to me my husband engaged with Hadyn asides from other personnel and guests to address the disingenuous arrogant contemptuous manner when addressing me which was despicable repugnant attitude, manner/behaviour not only because of my delicate condition but also because it was abhorrent and totally unacceptable. Unfortunately, this was to no avail there was no remorse or regret as Hadyn fails to recognise his imperious attitude does not belong as a quality in professional management leadership.  Solutions – At this supposition, surmised that an alternative dinner option was prerequisite as I started feeling unwell thus my husband suggested to Hadyn that possibly a sandwich in the room could be a possible solution to dinner? Ordered was a selection of sandwiches and fries whereupon Hadyn stated that he would personally transport this to room 17. A knock at the door which filled me with dread, sick to the stomach overwhelmed with apprehension that I would have to see Hadyn again thus was about to walk into the ensuite realised with relief one of the young waitresses had brought the dinner tray. She professed that Hadyn was far too busy with guests as she was not old enough to open the wine bottles that had been ordered – with that she left. Uncovering our salvaged anniversary dinner discovered the plate of assorted sandwiches were indeed not what we suggested, Hadyn had actually dictated that our repast was ordinarily something we do not eat - the minute steak flat iron ensemble – horrified at the mess that had been thrown on the tray which was supposed to represent 4* fine dining (a transport café has more finesse). The greasy unseasoned steak literally had been deep fried (not sauteed with meticulous care) with the soggy frozen chips was both disgusting and was totally inedible to the discerning palate. At this conjecture I burst into tears our special day had been annihilated through ignorant arrogant unprofessional nincompoops.  Recourse – Terrified of the morning with the thought of breakfast menu scenarios being synonymous with Langley Castle ordering dinner when having a dietary disorder filling me with dread leaving me petrified compounded with our celebrations obliterated, we discussed the proposition of abandoning our stay, retreat home and prepare a more fitting homemade repast then can ever be expected at Langley until management engage a professional fully trained 4* chef. Decision taken, motion passed PDCA (Plan Do Check Act) re-packed and placed our luggage in our SLK and set off to inform reception of our impending departure and check-out. Sadly, the arrogant conceited culture is deeply rooted within the Langley Castle Brigade as James the receptionist simply could not careless, with his insincerity and condescending manner, go ahead leave was his retort when we relayed the scenario, we had experienced all because I have the unfortunate dietary disorder I was born with - and Langley Castle dysfunctional Management. The failings in not recognising the art of service with a customer focused approach is centric to the Hotel Industry. James’ parting words upon our earlier than expected departure was to contact the Executive General Manager (Margaret Livingstone-Evans) to make a complaint and have the £100 deposit refunded.  Resolution? Please therefore Margaret whist I am waiting for my doctor’s appointment we forward to meeting you for reparation discussions at your earliest convenience please do not hesitate in contacting us we await your response in earnest. Dissatisfied, disappointed - totally disenchanted. Friday 6 October 2023 Margaret audaciously contacted us on the telephone with tone of complete lack of respect and resentment offered the return of the £100 deposit by way of some kind of apology. As of 10 October 2023 the £100 was indeed remitted. Good evening - Margaret, Tuesday 18 October 2023 - 2025hrs Regarding your noxious statement - “received your comments in email format and having refunded your deposit you have failed to mention some very important points. You left the hotel without paying having added flowers to your room, having consumed food, brandies, and coffee. All of these items should have been paid for before you left. I doubt you would walk out of a shop without paying but for some reason you thought it was acceptable to walk out of a hotel without paying.” Further to casting aspersions to both my wife and myself with your malicious slander firstly prior to this ensure that the facts are true and correct in so much as finding of facts to support your accusations in your investigations. Thereby Margaret you would have discovered that upon the afternoon of our arrival 1500hrs Monday 2 October 2024 your receptionist Jessica requested that we make a £10 prepayment to enable the ancillary consumables (aperitifs, wine, liqueurs, and cognac) that we may purchase at dinner the transactional payment could be taken by James the evening receptionist. Having recently received my bank statement can categorically proclaim that the following two transactions that have been charged to my bank account occurred on 2 October 2024: 1) Langley Castle - £10.00 – taken by Jessica. 2) Langley Castle - £30.40 – taken by James. Please therefore Margaret the salient point is the truth that the series of unfortunate events previously discussed precipitated the decision to depart compounded the fact Langley Castle Management personnel left us no other choice, however neither of us had every intention of clearing the outstanding account upon our leaving the disappointing experience on our anniversary. Our request simply is to apologise for inaccurate incorrect defamation of our upstanding characters. Extremely disappointed with unprofessional disingenuous management

Having read the recent reviews I must say how shocked I am.My husband and I have stayed at the castle on many occasions and we have had the most amazing time in fact we will be returning again on the 27th of this month with all our family 10 in all to celebrate my husband & I birthdays. The staff are always very attentive the food amazing and we are always made welcome,Things can go wrong I realise that but quite honestly some people are very hard to please, This too is my honest opinion of the Castle and its team and I feel it is important to give another view,Also please remember you are visiting a VERY old castle and with that comes the charm although I have to say we have always been very happy with our room.

I have thought long and hard about my review because I had read some of the responses from the management! It looks like constructive criticism isn't welcomed. My review is honest and true. The castle needs money investing in the upkeep! The outside looks tired! On arrival, we were disappointed. The welcome wasn't great for a 4-star hotel. The overall appearance was disappointing! We were given vague directions to our room, and unfortunately, we got lost! If I'm honest, this was stressful. We went further up the red stair case unnecessarly. For the price you are charging, you should have shown us to our room. I actually helped some of your guests as they were about to continue to walk up the red staircase with their suit cases. Maybe a suggestion to put a simple rope across would help to alleviate some of the stress felt by climbing up a very narrow staircase unnecessarily. Whist on the subject of directions, the maps for the walks are shockingly bad. The inside is littered with dust gathering items and old battered furniture! Some of the bits are just really naff and just make the overall experience feel cheap. We stayed in room 4, and it was ok but tired. The worst part was all the sad reminders that you will be charged for the bottle containing the tap water, and if you stole the bear, etc! It would have been great if you had provided a bath robe? The towels had frayed edges, and there was an empty crisp packet wedged into the gap in the window frame! Is this 4 star?? The bathroom was tired and felt grubby. The mattress was old and uncomfortable. The tables in the dining room were too small and soon got cluttered with "stuff," including a cheap naff pumpkin lantern, which didn't light up! You are advised on check-in that you need to go into the drawing room for pre dinner drinks. Just to make other guests aware that these are charged as extra as is a 10% service charge per evening meal. The food at dinner was ok but inconsistent as we assumed there must have been a change of chef? We stayed Fri to Monday?? Also, there was no explanation about the fine dining menu and the relaxed menu, in terms of cost to your dinner bed and breakfast rate. The breakfast was inconsistent, too! If I'm honest, the fruit salad was so mean! I was shocked at the size of it! Mearly a tablespoon full! One morning, my husband got one egg and 2 sausages, and then another morning got 2 eggs and 1 sausage. The general staff were friendly, but to be honest, the management came across as aluthe, maybe trying to operate a hotel to the same standards as of 20 years ago! This would be when gluten-free was never heard of and the customer was never right! Things have changed Langley Castle and maybe you need to accept this?? I would love to recommend the hotel to my friends and family but I can't because it's not worth the money. I heard American guests moaning about the food. I feel really passionate about this review because it cost a lot of money to stay, £1400 plus for 3 nights. Langley Castle, I love your history but to your America owners I suggest you change your managements approach to customer service and look at ways to improve the standards because eventually you will find that repeat custom will stop. There is a lot of competition out there and you need to approach your busy differently!

I booked 8 rooms for a group of friends last year for a visit in early October 2023. Jessica and the team in admin made the whole experience very easy . They even accommodated extra rooms at a later date for further friends to join us . Breakfast on the first day was good but a little slow but this was probably down to the numbers of the party all ordering at the same time . Dinner was very good , along with wines and selection of beers .

This was a return visit and we were pleased to see the number of peacocks had increased!! There is the opportunity to stay in the castle or in much larger rooms outside in the gardens. We chose the latter on both occasions. My husband in particular really enjoyed the experience and the food. This is a 2 rosette restaurant. The last time we visited the owner of the hotel was there enjoying a break - he is an American and is planning to have his wedding reception at the hotel later this year. The food was generally good but not outstanding for 2 rosettes. There was some confusion over food to which I had allergies and I feel this needs to be picked up on more regularly. It would be very unfortunate if someone became very ill. However, the Chef had made Soda bread for me specifically to avoid yeast which was appreciated and very tasty. Inadequate knowledge of dietary needs is an issue I found to be prevalent in a number of places this summer and I can only put it down to the very trying time most catering establishments have had to undergo during and post Covid. Linked to this, it was clear to us that staff needed to be better trained. They were friendly and as helpful as they could be, but it turned out that a new team was apparently coming on board after we had left, so I hope this brings about a more professional approach in the way food is delivered and handled. Our room was comfortable and spacious, but needed to be refreshed - as did the dining room in terms of furnishings and redecoration. It looked as if there had been a fridge in the room, but this was no longer there - a pity, but not the end of the world as we were able to pick up fresh milk from reception. The duvets were very warm, but again this has happened elsewhere in equally rated accommodation, but I do feel that lighter duvets/ blankets should be available in the summer months to ensure a sound sleep.

I'm confused as to why you thought there was a new team coming on board. We have loyal staff many of whom have been with us for many years.
