My family and I enjoyed a wonderful Easter lunch at the Rectory restaurant. The grounds are beautiful and all the staff were very pleasant and accommodating. The food was outstanding. I had the scallop lobster raviolo followed by the monkfish. To finish was the rum baba- wow! Absolutely delicious. Looking forward to going back!

The rectory and it's grounds are absolutely beautiful, hence the two stars, the restaurant staff however are classless and rude to a level I and my friends had never experienced before. Booked in for two nights for a 50th celebration and dinner for 9 with at least 4 months notice including a request for a cake to be served. Stayed in the cottage where we were told there would be a fully equipped kitchen including an oven only to find out after arriving with food that required an oven that this wasn't the case. Fortunately the service staff agreed to heat the food in their kitchen so this first issue was resolved. Second night was the birthday night in the restaurant. From the offset we noted visible eye rolling from the female manager in the restaurant, and an icy atmosphere. However the food was decent. But then came dessert time. The female wait staff started distributing desert plates and forks to everyone, removing any element of surprise relating to the birthday cake. Worse still, the icy female manager then unceremoniously dumped said cake in front of me with 'there you go' , a knife, and no candles! It was absolutely gob smackingly appalling. My brother complained and it was then taken away again with no apology to be cut and re-served individually. We were all stunned. We then also noticed that the second bottle of fizz we had ordered at the start was still sitting in a bucket unopened/unserved, which we then also notified the female wait staff about and she removed. At this point we had had enough and requested the bill, assuming they would make suitable reparations. To our surprise the second bottle was still on the bill! After further conversations it was removed along with the first bottle as recompense for the poor service. However, the icing on the cake was that after taking the cake away to slice it they never brought the rest of it back despite my brother having paid a considerable amount for it. Would never return or recommend - strongly suspect we did not fit their desired demographic given the other reviews on here which says a hell of a lot more about them than us.

We live nearby and several people have recommended The Rectory restaurant so we had a reconnaissance visit the day before my wife’s birthday, stopping in for an aperitif at about 6pm. Very good service: friendly, helpful, not pretentious. Terrific atmosphere with a good fire, and surprisingly low cost. We checked out the menu and booked for the following night, Jennifer’s birthday. She’s been v keen for a no fuss evening and it was perfect. We were seated in one of several dining rooms, a large conservatory overlooking a subtly lit garden, and enjoyed the same aperitifs (double Pernod with ice) as the previous evening. We then had three mains between two of us because we preferred them to the starters, and all three dishes were terrific: Jerusalem Artichoke & Pumpkin, Venison, and Monkfish. Delicious food, excellent sauces, not too big, but not too small, well presented, well balanced and swiftly delivered. The wine list was good and reasonably priced; we had Champagne, a Sav Blanc and a Burgundy (by the glass - we were driving!) as well as a Sauternes with pudding (rum baba for nostalgic reasons) and port with the cheese. So quite a lot of alcohol in the end… With coffee it came to a smidge over £200 but that was mostly alcohol, so exceptionally good value for a memorable meal. Highly recommended, we’ll be returning.

Hard to fault the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff, of particular note were Theo, Jess and Ness, all went beyond the call of duty. Food fantastic, comfy bed and beautiful surroundings. Would go back anytime, highly recommend. Only slight negative was the slippery shower which needed a mat but that's the only fault i could find.

I honestly am not usually a difficult customer however I am forced to write this negative review. What could have been a nice stay was ruined by the fact that we had no hot water for a whole weekend. While I understand this is out of the control of the hotel staff, to be offered a £50 refund when we have spent £700 at the hotel is insulting. I wish I could recommend this place but I really can’t with customer service like that. Hot water is a basic amenity and certainly what would be expected in a luxury hotel. We did not feel at all luxurious when we couldn’t wash for a whole weekend! We were only offered a refund after having to really ask for one which was embarrassing and awkward. Really disappointed after saving for a long time to come and visit this hotel. I’d recommend going elsewhere.

Beautiful hotel with delicious food, fabulous cocktails and friendly, attentive staff. Our children treated me and my husband to a weekend retreat for my 60th birthday, which I happened to mention in passing to Tom, the barman the afternoon we arrived. The next evening before dinner, whilst relaxing in front of the log fire, I was presented with a glass of champagne and then after we finished our fantastic dinner, a pistachio cake with a candle and happy birthday piped on a plate! Rooms are spacious with very comfy beds, whole place is spotless. Surroundings are stunning with walks from the hotel itself or from Kemble, which is a short drive away. The Potting Shed, which is across the road, offers equally delicious food, but in a pub setting, so not as tranquil as The Rectory. Would love to return in the summer, as landscape changes, and also the outdoor pool will be open! Thank you a wonderful, relaxing stay

Just came back from a 3 nights stay at the Rectory. This break was truly excellent from start to finish and we were very spoiled by John and his team. The best of hospitality was on evidence from the loveliest of room (big room 11) to the classy bar- Special thanks to Tommy for his attention and care- to the restaurant team, professional and efficient and for the great food we experienced both at breakfast and dinner. Great relaxed vibe all round with excellent attention to detail. Really impressed. Thank you and see you again soon.

We had a lovely room (seven), and went down to the bar for a well executed Martini, then into dinner. Our starters, the trout and the seared mackerel, were excellent, as were our main courses, the duck and the lamb, and the service was good up to that point. Five minutes after our plates were taken we were given a knife and fork each, which was puzzling. It was my birthday, perhaps something special? We waited to see what would appear, but nothing did, not even a dessert menu. After about 20 minutes we started trying to get the attention of a waiter, with no result. At the half an hour point, after being ignored on multiple occasions, we got up and left. What happened? Our conclusion was that the table of four next to us was very important to the hotel. They were constantly being visited by staff to ensure they were happy, including a bearded guy who seemed like the manager. It meant that staff rushed past us on their way to ensure the Important Table was kept topped up with everything they wanted. The impression we were left with was a shame, because when the staff were around they were great, and whoever is wielding the skillet knows what he is doing. As an adjunct, we expressed our disappointment to the receptionist as we left, and have given the management 48 hours to express regret – not a word. Draw your own conclusion.

We stayed at The Rectory for four nights and absolutely loved it. This Grade II listed hotel is a really special place set in beautiful gardens with huge ancient trees, flowering shrubs and a stunning ornamental pond. You arrive in an impressive hallway with high ceilings, fireplace and comfy sofas. The décor throughout the hotel is stunning. Our room on first floor was great, quiet with super comfy bed, crisp cotton sheets, brilliant powerful shower and fluffy white towels. Lots of little extras such as fresh milk for teas/coffees and lovely Bramley bathroom products. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfasts were delicious with tasty coffee, croissants, yoghurt, fresh fruit and cooked food. There’s a fab heated swimming pool which we swam in every evening - bliss. Dog friendly. Three electric car chargers - no need to book. In summary, a wonderful, enjoyable stay. We’ll be back! NB There’s no sign at the entrance to the hotel but it’s the first turning on the left after the primary school and just before the medieval church.

I stayed here for two nights and wish I could have stayed longer. The hotel is just lovely. Rooms are large and well appointed. Bathrooms equally large with great shower. Breakfast was delicious as was dinner. Grounds are beautiful. You can’t help but feel serene when staying here. There are many places both indoors and out to relax with a book or a drink. I loved this hotel.
