The Castle Hotel, in the picturesque Wiltshire town of Devizes, is a privately run 18th Century Hotel, situated near the banks of the Kennet and Avon Canal, famous for the flight of 29 locks over the 230 foot Caen Hill. Visitors from all over the world flock to the Kennet and Avon Canal to watch or participate in the famous Devizes to Westminster Canoes Race. The Hotel is, also, a perfect location for cyclists to stop off on their journey to London or Bristol. The Castle Hotel is just metres away from the historic Wadworth's Brewery offering a number of traditional brewed ales delivered to us by dray horse and cart. (*On Thursday's you will find the dray horse and cart at The Castle Hotel where you are welcome to offer the shire horses a small treat). Devizes is close to many major towns and cities including Bristol, Swindon, Salisbury and Bath, making it an ideal base from which you can explore the surrounding area. The M4 is the nearest motorway, accessible from Hungerford at Junction 18, Chippenham at Junction 17, Swindon at Junction's 15 and 16 or Bath at Junction 14. Major roads include the A4, A303, A342 and the A361. We pride ourselves on offering great service in a relaxed friendly environment, through-out our bar, hotel and restaurant. All our facilities have recently undergone a refurbishment, which has made our bar and restaurant very popular with the locals. The 19 bedroom Hotel which has always been popular with tourist and business guests alike has had lots of additions to update this traditional Hotel.

We stopped here on the way home from Heathrow to wales incredibly jetlagged and worn out. This is a nice old building with slightly uneven floors and rather unpredictable door locks etc. In other words its got character. Friendly and helpful staff and an easy check in plus limited off road parking under the arches adjacent to the hotel. Upstairs seems to have been recently redecorated and our bathroom had been refurbished. The bed was comfortable and the room was warm. The beer in the bar was kept perfectly and reasonably priced as was the food. Congratulations to the kitchen for providing such a top quality evening meal, we absolutely loved it and the breakfast was up there too. There is a bit of traffic noise during the night, but not much.

When myself and my friend arrived to stop for the night we were greeted by a very friendly and informative receptionist called Shannon who answered any questions. We found the room spotlessly clean and tidy and had everything in the room and bathroom that you could possibly need. We ran out of teabags and milk but not for long as we were given more of these by another friendly member of staff who was attentive to guests and was told about the history of the hotel which was really interesting. We had dinner at the hotel and the food was perfect - freshly cooked and very tasty. Had a good nights sleep in a comfy bed then went down for a lovely breakfast. We were asked by the lovely lady in the restaurant if everything was ok and if we needed anything else, and again the food was cooked to perfection. We would certainly stay there again as all of the staff were very friendly and professional. Would recommend anyone to stay at The Castle Hotel. Wish I could give it more stars. Well done everyone for making us feel so welcome.

Pleasant old property on the edge of the town centre. it's a popular place for locals too. Nice welcome on arrival, and my room (booked as a single) had a comfortable bed large enough for two, and was a decent size. Breakfast was included, and was good and cheerfully served. The only drawback is the parking. The nearest long stay car park appears to be The Wharf and whilst not overly expensive is a couple of minutes away. But overall the hotel is comfortable and well priced.

This hotel is also a pub. We went for a drink as a group before having a curry across the road. There is a good sized bar area which has clearly been opened out to increase seating (food is served in the bar). There are also a couple of TVs which were showing a football match – something which presumably has to be done to attract customers. However, they were not intrusive. Naturally we had draft 6X which was perfectly kept and served – it hadn’t travelled too far as the brewery is the other end of the road!

Third time we have stayed here as we have family in Wiltshire that we visit. Stayed here Christmas night. Phoned in advance to see when we can check in and how late to get in as they were locking up at 9pm as it was Christmas. They were kind enough to say they would ensure our room could be ready early to check in so we could head off to see family. Key is given if coming in after doors locked but when we got back there after ten there was still someone on reception to greet us. This is why we stay here - friendly and helpful staff, lovely atmosphere and clean, modern rooms. Our double room was spotless and warm and spacious. We had an amazing night’s sleep and went down to a warm welcome for a delicious breakfast with countless coffee top ups. Looking forward to staying here again.

Stayed just one night while visiting to look at a vintage car, which we bought. We arrived exceedingly late, 1-30 am, due to delayed flights and closed motorways. Regardless, the boss waited up to let us in - a true gentleman. TV small, or are my eyes getting old, LOL. Shower lovely and warm. Would stay again if in the area. Many thanks for your late night help.

A warm welcome and a generous twin room awaited us when we arrived in the rain. Our room (actually two linked rooms) was much more comfortable and generous then we’d expected. Very clean and a well appointed bathroom too. The staff throughout our two day stay were friendly and attentive. Breakfast was also generous and served with charm and attention on both days. A shout out for Marzena and Shannon who kept our coffee cups and our bellies full on the Saturday and Sunday morning respectively. First class service. And, I should add, a very fair price for the two nights’ bed and breakfast we enjoyed.

Gutted, I was expecting the Castle to be so much more… I arrived on a Sunday, for other travellers to know, there is NO parking, not even the limited parking advertised. You can park in the car park over the road but I certainly wouldn’t leave any valuables in your vehicle. On the Sunday I was unable to get food as the kitchen closed at five, I ended up walking to the local Wetherspoons as I had no option. My room was at the back of the hotel which I appreciated as the road outside is very noisy with constant lorries and traffic. My room was spacious with a large bed and a decent bathroom which was clean and tidy. The hotel feels like someone is trying to make an effort but there is no character whatsoever, everything is white or grey. You could be in any travelodge and you wouldn’t notice the difference. The HUGE thing which lets the hotel down is the food! Please Please get your chefs to taste their own food! I’ve eaten two evening meals and three breakfasts so far. I won’t be bothering with breakfast tomorrow as it is just the cheapest of the cheap food, cooked with no care whatsoever. I actually find it insulting that it could be this poor. One evening meal I had was good (ham egg and chips), but tonight’s meal was appalling. It’s not difficult to cook sausage and mash. The see through rubbish served as mash was embarrassing. Half of it wasn’t cooked (microwaved) and nothing had the slightest bit of seasoning, unbelievably bland. I was kindly offered a free dessert but once again, try your own food! The brownie was the cheapest gunk in a square I have tasted. It really was not pleasant. I was really looking forward to staying here and I’m so pleased I didn’t bring my partner with me. Sorry but you cannot expect people to pay good money for rubbish.
