What a great little holiday we have had. We stayed for 4 nights at a very reasonable rate with breakfast included. The breakfast was the most delicious we have ever had at a hotel with a wonderful charming welsh lady who cannot do enough for her guests. All the food is locally sourced and truly delicious.

The beds were very comfortable and the room was quiet even though we were located at the front of the hotel near the main road as the sash windows are double glazed.

The choice of channels on tv is good and the bathroom is full equipped with lovely shower as well as bath. The location is great as once you cross the road unto the market place, there are a few local attractions such as the flight of locks. the wiltshire museum.

Cafes to go to are Tea inc with large selection of teas as well as the normal coffees and cakes and a shop and Massimos, an italian restaurant which has won pizza of the year but if yob want meat or fish, the best ones are the lamb special or the sea bass. The mayflower chinese restaurant was also good. We ate at the bear hotel the first night, the food was fine. The Bear hotel staff really want to go above and beyond and even the housekeeping lady wanted to make sure she had done everything she possibly could to make sure our sheets were spotless ( she found a stain on a newly laundered sheet and insisted she replace and change the bed immediately when we came back to our room early one time).

The whole Devizes are a charming lot of people who are very friendly and a welcoming and very happy to accommodate tourists and they are all very proud to talk about the history of the local area. We learnt so much from the crystals stall man on the Thursday market day about the Avebury stones.

Wonderful experience.

We booked for 1 night over Aug bank Hol weekend.
Easy to find, large carpark to the rear for guests. We had pre requested a quiet room ,and they had accommodated that by giving us a room away from the main high St. Which was good esp as there was a funfair/St Market being set up that night on the main High St!.
Unfortunately the view from the room was really awful!! But that was the only let down of the room, which was a smaller double, we weren't too concerned as only staying 1 night & a quieter room was more important to us as we sleep with open windows, although only 1 of the sash windows actually opened! It was warm in the night but they also provide you with a room fan. The bed was very comfortable and bathroom in good order with usual mini shampoos etc, all very clean. Yes it's an old building room really could do with new wallpaper to freshen up the room, but over all for the price we paid we would definately return and recommend. The hostility tray had plenty inc biscuits and bottled water! Which is good for 3☆ hotel. Staff were friendly , breakfast waiters very professional. Breakfast was cooked well and of quality, our only gripe was our sausage was not the Cumberland promised on the menu. They clearly must of run out and substituted it for an Italian sausage! Best cooked in casseroles etc as was tough to cut slighly spicey and disgusting definitely not to be used as a breakfast sausage,me and my husband couldn't eat ours. Which was a real disappointment as was really looking forwards to it after reading great reviews of sourcing local produce. Also had cereal, yoghurt, fruit and fresh croissants. I'm sure it was just a one off being a bank hol ,perhaps underestimated how booked they'd be in covid times. The dinning areas was traditional and more modern. Be aware they don't serve meals on Sunday evenings only roasts at lunch time . Also nice little bar to the front, only my husband was left standing at the bar like an idiot waiting to order. The bar girl had seen him but failed to let him know she won't come into the bar to take your order!! You have to walk out of the pub into main lobby to end of continued bar when she serves to get your drinks!! Not helpful esp when out of courtesy she could of waved to my husband to atleast alert him . Only because of others sitting in the pub part did we know, and it was them that were telling everyone that entered you need to walk round to order drinks! Not good for customers! But once you know not a problem, poss again because of covid perhaps short on staffing?
Really only small niggles . Ideal central location to visit many POA . Make sure on checking in they take your car reg for parking and on checking out to save time they send you an email so you can do it on your phone to save you poss queuing at reception! 😀

We came to this area for an open day and booked this hotel as a reasonably priced place to stay. What a pleasant surprise. Devizes is a lovely old market town steeped in history. The shops fronts have not ruined the historic look of the town. This hotel was comfortable, cleaned and the menu was considerate of food intolerances and offered Tasty, Homecooked food. Good breakfast selection. Staff were very efficient and friendly. Good selection of drinks at the bar. Very lovely ambiance about the place with comfortable seating in bar and quiet lounge to sit and read a book with lovely decor. Would thoroughly recommend. Free parking for residents.

We were pleased to see The Bear open for business again after a long period in Lockdown. It was particularly welcoming with Christmas lights, great service and thankfully a return to open lit fires in every room in the bar areas. The meal was great and well presented. Most of all I welcomed the wide range of adult ice-cream options so rare in restaurants of late. Thank you to all the staff concerned for an enjoyable evening in this dreadful 2020!

We met friends for lunch on Thursday and decided to give the market day Carvery a go.
It was absolutely delicious, lovely selection of meats and vegetables and it was great to have vegetables cooked nicely and not just dipped into the water, and it was very reasonably priced.
Although it was not busy, we were told that the Sunday Carvery is very popular. We will certainly be going there again.

First things first, this is a hotel so they are obviously geared up for that side of the business. However, with it being slap bang in the middle of The Market Place you would also expect them to encourage walk in trade too. Seemingly not!

6 of us recently popped in for drinks and elected to sit in the window of the old bar to the front of the building. One table was occupied but other than that the bar was empty. The remaining table in the window was sticky and grubby and there were empty glasses all over it. There was really no excuse for this as the place was dead, but rather than mention it we decided to clear the table and wipe it down ourselves before going to the bar to order.

There were no staff present in the bar area but the blonde chap who was meant to be serving, was texting or playing on his phone in the back room and was clearly visible from the bar. He saw us waiting, but continued with whatever he was doing for a good few minutes before walking up to us with a face like thunder. He then greeted us with a scowl and a curt 'Yes' and took our order. Interestingly, the bar we ordered from isn't really a bar at all as all the pumps are just for show, so he had to walk through to the other bar and bring the drinks through 2 at a time.

It soon became apparent that the IPA had 'gone' as it was vinegary and smelt pretty rotten, so I took it back to the bar, only to find the barman had gone walkabout. I went through to the other bar and he wasn't there either, and the only person in the room was a chap on his laptop who I assumed was a guest. He looked at me but carried on typing, and then watched me search for the barman for a good 5 minutes before eventually coming to the bar. I explained I was looking for the barman and he said he could help me, so it then dawned on me that he was the manager (or something similar) and not a guest!

I told him the IPA was off, and his exact words to me were, "Well, what do you want me to do about it?" so I asked for a replacement pint but he refused as it would mean changing the barrel and flushing the lines which he wasn't prepared to do. I pointed out that it was a pub and changing barrels was par for the course, but he flatly refused to do it and just stood there looking at me. I then asked if I could have an alternative drink which he reluctantly agreed to. If this is the example the staff are set then it's really no surprise they don't seem to care, but we were genuinely shocked by the 'can't be bothered' attitude of the 2 men we encountered.

As I said above, this is a hotel and I completely get that, but if you open the bar to the general public you really should treat them with the same courtesy and respect you'd give someone who is staying there. This is clearly not the case at The Bear and we were treated as a complete inconvenience.

Absolutely dreadful place.

We stayed for 2 nights at The Bear Hotel. It is a very old hotel with character due to it’s age with quirky layout. Our room was at the top of the hotel so we could look out on the market square. The room was clean and everything worked ok. What impressed us most was the incredibly hard working staff who seemed experts In multitasking e.g. waiting on tables, check in desk, bar tending, alongside resolving minor issues for guests whose tv wasn’t working! All done with courtesy and a smile! We very much enjoyed our stay and wanted to recognise the staff for their efforts in making guests feel very welcome as we would expect, but we felt they really put in a genuine effort. Well done!

We have stayed in many hotels both old and new. The Bear is steeped in character oozing "olde worlde" charm. The floors are uneven, the windows are not all upvc and the flooring is not uniform throughout. However, the staff are well mannered and attentive. We arrived after the kitchen closed but were served with sandwiches within 10 minutes of asking. The rooms are warm and the bed was comfortable. The shower needed a bit of coaxing but worked fine once we conquered it. Bar snacks were fine and the whole place had a buzz about it. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will return next time we visit family in Wiltshire.

We had a large room overlooking the square, but was very quiet As the Inn is so old, the floors are uneven, so be warned. Our room had everything we needed and the beds were comfortable. If you use the hotel car parks (to side and rear) make sure to give your Reg. No. to Reception.
Breakfast was only meal we had during our 3 night stay, but it is excellent. For some reason the yoghurts are not autmatically put out, so if you want these, ask. The cooked breakfasts were incredibly good. Full English was freshly cooked and the bacon stayed hot until the last mouthful. Not something you get even in 5-star hotels! Eggs Benedict are anther good option.
Very friendly staff throughout and The Bear is obviously a good place for locals to visit for Morning Coffee and Afternoon Tea. Would return.

This hotel is centrally located with a free car park at the back. The staff are very friendly and helpful, breakfast was good with a great choice of cereals, juices, toast, variety of egg dishes and full English. The room we stayed in was a bit tired, especially the bathroom but perfectly clean. At the end of the day this is an old hotel and you should accept it for this, if you want modern find a Premier Inn!! We were happy with our stay and had no complaints.

Whilst we were staying there was a Labrador in the lounge area, but not sure whether they were staying - suggest ring reception.
