We live in Hampshire, just outside of Portsmouth and needed to keep an important one-day meeting with some friends who live near Broadway in the Cotswolds. As our friends were not able to put us up, we decided to drive up the day before and find somewhere nearby to stay over two nights. After some searching, we found the ‘Horse and Groom’ at Bourton-On-The-Hill, the attractive photos and descriptions made it look ideal for us so we decided to book two nights through Booking.com, for the 6th and 7th October. Unfortunately, when we tried to book, we found the first night was now no longer available, Disappointed, as we had our hearts set on it, we decided to still book for the second night (7th) and try to find somewhere else for the 6th. Luckily, we were able to book the ‘Chequers Inn’ at Fladbury for our first night. The property looked ok on the website though it would not perhaps have been our first choice but it seemed convenient and was only about 20 minutes from Broadway. We are not familiar with the area and were not quite sure what to expect. Well, we needn’t have worried! We found our way easily and arrived about 8pm to find a really attractive traditional, old-world country inn. Private parking was no problem and check in couldn’t have been easier, despite the difficulties of the current pandemic limitations, which they had well organised, everyone was pleasant and helpful. We were offered help with our bags and shown to our room, however it was not the room we had booked, our host said he had “taken the liberty” of upgrading us to a better room (not that there was anything wrong with the one we booked), he asked if we were happy with the upgrade but said we could still have the original room if we preferred. Well of course we were happy, all the rooms seemed spacious and comfortable but this one really was outstanding, quite old as one might expect but beautifully furnished with all the mod cons, very comfortable and cosy, nicely appointed en-suite and absolutely huge. Of course all the usual items one would expect including hospitality etc. We went downstairs to the bar/restaurant where we enjoyed an absolutely delicious dinner, local cuisine beautifully cooked and presented. There were just a few other diners and a few people drinking in the bar who I took for locals and the whole ambiance and atmosphere of the place was wonderfully cosy, calm, pleasant and relaxing. Just the thing after a long drive. After dinner and a couple of drinks we went to our room, watched TV for a short while then turned in not too late. The king-sized bed was really comfortable as was the bedding and pillows. I don’t usually sleep that well away from home, especially the first night away but on this occasion we both dropped off within minutes. We heard no noise from the pub below or from any of the other guests, in fact the was no noise at all, you could hear a pin drop it was so peaceful and quiet. We woke next morning feeling really refreshed and relaxed. Breakfast was just as impressive as dinner had been with a wonderful menu and choice, we finished off with the best coffee I’ve had for ages and finally checked out with a smile and a promise to return one day. The whole experience was wonderfully enjoyable from start to finish. Unfortunately the Horse & Groom, who we had booked for our second night, turned out to be awful. They messed our booking up completely, were quite unpleasant and unhelpful and they booked us into another B&B (The Lion Inn) which was horrendous (see our negative review; the Lion Inn, Winchcombe) and we really wished we had booked the Chequers for both nights. My wife and I visited this restaurant last year and then reviewed the food as excellent, so after a country walk nearby decided to visit again, being a Monday and Covid quiet unfortunately for the trade, we arrived at around 12.30 and the restaurant was as expected very quiet, a couple of glasses of red wine quickly served and a menu slightly different from what I remember the year previous, however still a few items we liked the look of, being lunch time we chose a sharing platter board and one item from the starter list the deep fried squid rings, all came together as we requested, really well presented and the staff were really friendly and helpful, although this restaurant was quiet it is well set out and has a warming atmosphere. Really nice quiet location, great food and great service, only down side I couldn’t find the menu online, but trusted on my previous visit on what to expect.…

We stayed at the chequers on Saturday night we had dinner in the restaurant and booked a room for bed and breakfast We have to say the staff are absolutely amazing so welcoming and friendly the rooms are lovely the beds are superking and the food is fantastic

Travelling on a Sunday and needing a quick stop we pulled into this pub. Service was swift and friendly. The beer was good and I liked my Beef and horse radish sandwich. Just enough chips and salad too. My only [small] criticism was the 'ready sliced' brown bread my sandwich was made with. But for what I wanted 10/10 thanks guys.

Stayed at Chequers Inn for one night due to working in the area. The room was clean, warm and cosy which is exactly what you want on a cold winters night and beds were very comfortable. We received a lovely warm welcome upon arriving and when realising that we had to leave for work before the time that breakfast was served the chef offered to come in early to make our breakfast. Both breakfast and dinner were delicious (I wish I had had enough room for dessert!) and I would definitely return without a doubt if I was in the area again. Thank you for a lovely stay and the amazing customer service. I hope I end up in the area again soon so that I have another reason to swing by!
