Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I was working in Barnsley and booked the Churchill hotel. The room was priced just right I payed 45 pound a night, in return I got a very helpful owner from speaking to him when booking, explained everything about the keys which made it very easy, I also got a modernly smart room, nice clean bathroom, there was free parking right next to the hotel, which has cameras on. Only downside was a pub underneath which got quite loud but then again it is a pub.Shops nearby on a high street 2minutes walk. Would stay again.

Large room, great value and simple to check in. No staff or reception area but actually made it easier.
Location was perfect as right on the main high street and parking was easy and secure.
Beds comfy and nice simple room

The room was clean, warm and a good size and there was free parking close by. Self check in was also straightforward. The main bug bears were the pillows which were the lumpiest and most uncomfortable I have had experienced in a hotel. Also there were people slamming doors and running along the corridors and talking and crying and god knows what, late at night for some time. Usually one could call the front desk staff to complain but there was no one to complain to! Guess it was my bad luck to have had revellers on my floor that night.

I booked a member of my staff into wombwell Churchill… fabulous staff and service over the phone… on the Sunday night the member of my staff couldn’t gain access into his room, a two minute phone call to the manager and within five minutes he was on site and fixed the issue.
My employee couldn’t praise him enough.
On behalf of my company… I would rather pay my lads to drive 20-30 minutes and stay in the Churchill knowing the service is top quality.
Just as the rooms are!
Thank you to the manager who came from home and let my lad in that night!
You will have my bookings whenever 20 miles radius!
Would recommend to anyone!

The room we booked for three nights was clean and comfortable but I am big and the bed was too small for the pair of us. I asked if we could upgrade to a larger room for the remaining two nights and the management were very helpful. If you are there for more than one night I suggest opt for a bigger room. You can book with the hotel directly and this was the cheapest option. You are slap in the middle of Wombwell so expect some traffic noise, but the window insulation was good. There is a Wetherspoons 2 minutes away which gives good value for food. There are no staff on site. You receive a keycode for the external door in your correspondence and on your arrival day another code to access a key safe to get your room key. Sounds strange but it works. Dedicated parking just behind the hotel. There are no breakfast facilities but a couple of bakeries and coffee shops nearby. We would stay there again.

I have stayed at Churchills many times, and as always the housekeeper was extremely attentive, the room was immaculate and Frank popped by to say Hello too, which is always nice. I am always made to feel very welcome, which is great.
This time I stayed in Room 9, (standard double room) which is one of my favourites when travelling alone. It was warm and cosy, whilst still having plenty of space to move about, lots of hot water for a shower and being at the side of the hotel, its fairly quiet.
When staying at Churchills, you must keep in mind that this is a hotel located on a main road, with bars and shops, traffic and so on, so silence should not be expected.
This is a lovely hotel, extremely clean and well presented for a very reasonable price. Just the place to use as a base when in the area.
Although the provision is for room only, they do have a large lounge area providing microwave etc, and an allocated area in the fridges, for each room to keep perishables in, if you are staying for a few days.
Plenty of takeaways etc on the doorstep will keep you spoiled for choice, as well as the bar downstairs (not part of the hotel establishment) which does a great meal too.
Highly recommend this hotel if you are looking for a comfy clean base for a good price.

Hello,

I am writing this on behalf of our instructor who stayed at your premises (room 3a) due to us booking this for his stay away job.
This is his transcript below:

I stayed at your hotel this week, from the 6th till the 9th, (1 High Streett, Wombwell, Barnsley S73 0DA, UK, Barnsley).

I was not very happy, several things were unsatisfactory.

First thing was the central heating did not work properly, the radiators were only luke warm, I was freezing for 3 days and had to wear day time clothes to bed.

Secondly I got locked out, so had to call the number that was on your door, but it was not recognised. The pub was separate to the hotel and so when I went to speak to them they said they could not help. So I stood for 30 mins trying to get in out of the pouring rain!
I also contacted your company directly, and he could not help me even though he had my name, because I did not have the booking reference which only my company had (it was 12pm at night so could not call them).
When eventually someone came outside who was staying in the hotel I could then get in, due to them having a cigarette.

I will never be staying at this hotel again, and would never recommend this to anyone.

I am a company and as a company ourselves we thought the standard of the hotel was terrible.
The pictures online were misconceiving.
The TV wasn’t even a TV, it only played the radio, which when staying for 3 nights wasn’t very good.

Please do make sure you do not let any other of your customers have such a horrible experience at your hotel as us.

Booked via a site which advertised hotel with luxury double rooms.

Arrived to find entrance was down a scruffy back lane with key code entry. We had received an email while travelling telling us code as hotel is not staffed.

Secure car park was not secure and did not have cctv

Opened door to see dried blood smeared up inside of door and filthy carpets.

Fire alarm went off at this point and we were greeted with people exiting the building shouting up the stairs that such a person had been smoking weed again and set alarms off. We were advised by someone passing they were turning alarms off and to go to our room.

Found our room after negotiating stairs that stank of weed to find a small room with what was most definitely not a luxury double bed. The room was definitely not luxury neither although it looked clean apart from cigarette burns in carpet and bathroom shower cubicle was all cracked with trim lying on floor

Needless to stay we left after ringing and asking for a refund

To be fair, after explaining what we had found we were given a full refund

Not recommended as a place for a family to stay and it’s not part of the pub below so can’t access pub as a guest.

More like workman’s digs and I Say this without wanting to insult any hardworking workmen

Friendly staff and a very nice clean room however it smelt strongly of stale cigarette smoke - horrible !!
If I was staying for more than one night I would of said something or asked to change rooms.

I ordered food downstairs. Cheesy fries which were tasteless and a cheese and bacon burger which was really nice however the bun was cold and would of been so much better if it was grilled like most burgers are.

Food 6/10

I would use this hotel again though and I’m grateful for the price I paid - £38

I hate writing this but the rooms and access where fine .We booked here because it was my partners birthday and we booked to see a play at the Dearne valley playhouse. On our return to the hotel there was a man stood outside the door with his trousers open he never said a word just sneared at us .we entered the hotel and by this time I was scared , we locked the door of our room at about 1 o'clock I was awoken by the strong smell of cannabis and loud voices outside the door they were smoking cannabis outside our door and arguing I didnt sleep a wink then needless to say I won't be returning .This place needs some sort of security. There was also fag burns in the carpet
