Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.

we stayed here for two nights b&b , as i went to check in there is a really strong smell of frying which rises up the stairs onto the landing and into the rooms . we had to wash everything even our coats to get the smell out.
the room we stayed in was the en suite family room which looks nothing like the room photos on the hotel website. the bathroom was in need of total refurbishment. there was cobwebs hanging off the ceiling and bathroom extractor fan , the carpet was never vacuumed even before we arrived and when we pulled the covers back on our bed there were two long black hairs underneath (not very nice).
the one good point were the breakfasts (nice full english)

stopped here for 2 nights, room was basic but comfortable and had on suite facilities unlike our freinds who stayed in a room that had a bath next to the bed in the same room but had to use the shared toilet facilities, I am still laughing now.
I think its down to pot luck (or if they like you or not) as to wether you get on suite or not.
breakfasts are very good and good value for money if you get one!!, my freind sat with 6 of us watching us eat but didnt manage to get his and was then told it was his fault! they are not always very warm either and waiting over half an hour seems to be the norm.
a lot of hotels leave small information booklets in the room meal times etc this would be a starting point.
my biggest concern was evacuation in the event of a fire as we could smell cigarette smoke on our landing. This place was a maze and took some time to navigate around and the fire exit signs were confusing. there was a fire escape outside our room window but this didnt seem to be used?, is there only one escape route for 50 plus rooms? surely not.

the problem with the southcliffe is that the management of this hotel either dont care or are just basically incompetent because realistically the hotel has a lot of potential to be good, the lively bar being one of them if you like that sort of thing.

when someone says what do you expect for £22.50 per night each i would say the grand hotel in scarbourough as this was offering stays at this price at the time also.

The good: Friendly staff and manageress.Cheap prices. Location next to spa and beach and amenities. Full English breakfast, cereal and hot drinks included in B&B prices.

The average : No open reception which means you have to go down a passage into the kitchen area to gain attention or ring a bell. The lower floors are enveloped in cooking smells so if you can, book a room as far up the hotel as possible, which means you have some stairs to climb but no smell. The bar is open to residents and the public so it can be quite noisy until the early hours with karaoke .
Our room was not attended by a maid after the first night and this was resolved once brought to the staffs attention. The room was average in size and the furniture was dated but clean and tidy. The bed itself was comfortable. We had no toilet in the room so we had to use the one on the floor, which was a communal one. Some toilets did smell. The hotel does need to be modernised and brought up to standard. The front hotel steps have duck tape on them to cover broken tiles and the paint is flaking off on the outside windowsills. The hotel is advertising for staff and this shows in the levels of service. A few residents did talk about cold breakfasts and non working locks on the toilet doors, and one group talked about Fawlty Towers, and expecting Basil and Manuel appearing from the kitchen !
You are obliged to pay a £5 deposit for your room key which is refundable when you produce your key on checking out.

Would we return ? No . I would invest a little more money for an alternative hotel.

On arrival a young man greeted us with “I can’t give you keys without cash” which put me off straight away as really quite rude on arrival of your guests. I sat and waited with our bags while my husband went to find an atm. When we finally got into the room it was absolutely discusting.. so so dirty. I never complain and I never write reviews but I’m amazed this hotel is still open. I’m assuming it’s still attracting guests due to its great location for the spa and guests will probably just cope with it for the one night. It being dated wasn’t even an issue but the dirt!! Just pick up a cloth. People don’t want to spend their hard earned money on a place like this. Ridiculous at £85 a night considering the beautiful places I’ve stayed for less!

Who in there right mind would stay here? The rooms are absolultly disgusting and the management are even worse. From the foul mouthed old lady to the trampy looking dimwits.

I have never stayed in a place so bad and i travel a lot for business.

The problems started when i complained about being over charged for the room. ( ive never been told to F-off before in a hotel).

We decided to have something to eat and it is clear why the restuarent (which is open to the public) is very empty. The food was appauling and looked like it had not one once of care taken. I had the fish and chips (simply dish). The chips where cold and the fish tasted off.

I personally will never stay here again and will also be letting my business partners, friends and family know to avoid this place.

A shame reallt as we enjoy bridlington and go quite often.

Again AVOID AVOID AVOID.

P.S To the owners please train your manager as her attitude is somewhat questionable.

We arrived about 2pm and the staff were friendly and we ordered 3 Sundqy Roasts, one without meat - .and it was well worth the wait when they arrived. All the food was piping hot and cooked to perfection. The young man who served it was friendly and chatty.

We will definitely be visiting again.

Went in for a meal with 3 other families what I assume to be the manager was bad tempered and rude from when we walked in
(Table was filthy and covered in glasses) not a problem we just asked if it could be cleared when we requested a menu from the bar 🙄 what a performance! Then watched him stomping round family room grumbling. We ordered our meal and was then told cash only. Oh I’m sorry i Only have card I’ll have to cancel. He threw his pencil across the bar!😳
The 7 of us took our business next door and had a lovely Chinese
Obviously a pub we will not frequent against

Brilliant hotel, great location. Despite the bad reviews, the staff were in my opinion lovely. The seriously could not do enough for us. The room/s we had were immaculate. When I say rooms, that's merely because our train was cancelled, so at very short notice Sarah and her mum were able to accommodate us at the very last minute.

Room didn’t have a toilet. Staff were rude. And they also think they can help themselves to your possessions in your room and then just hope you don’t ask for them back in the morning IF you discover they’ve gone missing. For some reason they also think it’s ok to put your clothes in your bag and move them to the wardrobe while you’re out. Very strange.
