We really struck gold with our 4 night stay in the Boathouse. An immaculately clean converted cottage with everything you need for a comfortable and relaxing stay. Well equipped kitchen and a list of local eateries and takeaways. Kay the owner welcomed
us on arrival with a very easy checkin but left us alone for the duration of our stay but was there on hand if we needed her. The boathouse is on a beautiful lake with the most stunning views and sunsets. An ideal place to get away from the rat race and relax. There was no wifi in the boathouse but 4G signal- this didnt bother us and added to our relaxation. Comfy bed and lounge furniture, plenty of space outdoors to relax and walk the dog. We
loved the ducks sailing past our window and watching their morning waddle to get their worms. You do need a car to stay here and visit Cornwall/ Devon but it is well worth the extra bit of travel to have this pure relaxation when at the Boathouse. Our only disappointment was we had to leave!

Beautiful peaceful location with a fishing lake. Kay and her nephew Thomas were perfect hosts and the breakfast each morning was amazing, Polhilsa Farm is located perfectly to explore Cornwall. We stayed a week and would return again

Converted barns on a working farm. We chose the B&b as a base to be near family and able to get to a lot of attractions within an hours drive. The rooms were large well furnished and wonderfully quiet. The only sound was nesting swallows and who can complain about that?!
Breakfast was full offering hearty sausages and bacon were especially wonderful. The breakfast totally set us up for the day. Kay the owner and host was so very keen to make sure we had a nice stay and her local knowledge was so helpful in finding places to go. Fully recommend

Grounds very unkempt. Owner very unhospitable . We only stayed for one hour and couldn't wait to get out. Photographs of property not truly represents this place. We arrivedat around 5 pm but there was no where to get a meal. Owner told us we had to pre order anything to eat. The nearest place to buy any food was a couple of miles away. When we told her we would not stay she was in the kitchen and had plenty of food in there. When I asked her why didn't she offer us a plate of food and that we would have gladly paidfor it she just shrugged her shoulders and walked away.

Response from Kay B, Owner at Polhilsa Farm
Responded 12 Sept 2015
Thank you for your comments. We are fortunate to receive many fantastic reviews from guests who have stayed here but it is also good to hear negative comments such as yours. No place is perfect and your comments will be taken on board to try to improve the service we offer. Your booking was completed through Booking.com and I would strongly advise that in future you check the booking information more thoroughly. As I explained at the time, we are a Bed and Breakfast establishment and not a hotel and therefore, only provide an evening meal by prior arrangement - this information was stated on your booking confirmation. The food that you saw in our kitchen was being served to the wedding reception that we were hosting at the time of your arrival and so was all pre-booked. As you say you only spent about an hour with us and much of that time was spent with me discussing your issues. Had you spent a little more time here, perhaps you could have enjoyed our picturesque setting and seen some great wildlife and fauna around the 2 lakes. I do apologise if you thought that I was unhelpful and once again thank you for your comments. We hope that you enjoyed the rest of your stay in Cornwall.

I stayed at Polhilsa Farm for several nights. The room was large and the shower room perfectly adequate. The location is pretty - there's an attractive garden accessible to visitors, with a large pond - but quite remote. Two minor issues: when the room above mine was occupied, the loud creaking of the floorboards as occupants walked around kept me awake; and the breakfasts were average to poor.

I found this place by chance on the internet on the Saturday morning of Bank holiday. We got there late Saturday evening. Our room was great. The view of the lake was special and all you could hear were the Canadian Geese and the Malard Ducks. The host was welcoming and breakfast was very good. It is a good spot for touring around. The Host has done a lot of reserch on local places to eat at and had information on plenty of places to visit.
We have re booked to go back at the end of the month for a longer stay

In July this year we stayed in the Parlour Cottage at Polhisa Farm. It was a lovely building, surrounded by nice scenery and two good size fishing lakes. Myself and my husband stayed with my brother and his partner, along with our 8 month old daughter. The space was great, and there was no noise from the neighbouring cottages. I wasn't sure when we booked quite how far away from the centre of Cornwall we were, but it appeared to be about 30 mins - 45 mins drive from the centre of Cornwall, not too bad if you don't mind the drive.

We did enjoy our stay, however there are a few things that possibly need to be looked in to. I noted the following:-

Skirting Boards in the lounge were detached from the wall
Plug sockets were loose/ cracked
Rug in the lounge was dirty - dog hair, grass, mud and drink/ food stains. I tried to hoover this but the hoover was not very powerful at all and very flimsy.
Cobwebs across the door frames, corners of rooms and under chair/ table in living room.
Kitchen hob was dirty with left over food, I cleaned this before we used it.
There was not enough toilet roll provided for the amount of guests staying in the property - and at no point did anybody come and replenish this. The same for the bin bags - we were asked to put the bins out for collection on Thursday but had no bin bags to put in the bins for the following days.
The showers in the property do not keep a regular temperature - they are either cold or scorching hot. Very hard to regulate if you don't have the same temperature shower as other people.
Toaster only worked on one side, took a very long time to do toast when 5 people were eating it every morning.
Double doors in the living room don't stay shut unless locked.
May be a good idea to have a nest of tables (or a smaller table) in the living room as it was hard to put drinks anywhere without pulling to big table out - we were using the carpet space for our daughters play gym and toys.

The above aren't complaints - they are just points I noticed. I cannot fault the owners, they were very helpful in providing us with places to visit and shortest routes etc, and were kind. Overall this is a lovely place to stay if you are willing to travel. Beautiful surrounding/ views, nice clean fishing lakes, sufficient parking, onsite meals should you require them (pre-booking required).

We stayed for two nights and the rooms were adjoining, comfortable and clean. Modern decor and spacious.
The owners were friendly and the breakfasts were delicious and lovely and hot. We would stay here again.

Just returned from a lovely 3 night break at the Boathouse at Polhilsa Farm. The setting is absolutely stunning but some of the furnishings are in desperate need of replacement to bring it in line with so many other luxury cottages available in the surrounding area.
The property was renovated in 2007 & I suspect nothing has been touched since then. One side of the recliner settee is broken, the sink in the en-suite is cracked, the kettle is so old we boiled water on the stove as black bits from inside the kettle were present in your drinks, the washing up bowl needs throwing away & the microwave & cooker are ancient. As well as this the inside of cupboards were dirty as was the cutlery drawer inner.
Minor faults I know but this is such a beautiful building & it could be so much better given some much needed tlc

This was our first stay at Polhilsa Farm - we stayed in Dairy Cottage. It was lovely.
There were two lovely bedrooms on the ground floor, one double and one twin, double had ensuite which was lovely and a walk in wardrobe. The twin had a walk in wardrobe with the bathroom just outside the door.
The Kitchen and Living Room were upstairs, with lovely floor to ceiling windows with view over the fishing lakes. The Kitchen had everything that we needed for our stay, the Living Room was comfy and spacious (just right for 4 people and our dog Milly).
Hubby went fishing a couple of days we stayed there and had a couple of fish - he said there were some really bit ones in there!. Lovely walks for the dog. Would definitely stay again. The owners were really lovely and extremely helpful when asked where the best places to eat/visit were.

Stephen S asked a question Mar 2015
Plymouth, United Kingdom
is there fishing in the lake ?
Answer from Kay B
Plymouth, United Kingdom
Hello - did answer this question when first posted so don't know what happened to that! Yes, it is possible to fish the lake. There is a variety of coarse fish stocked. We do very little maintenance on the lakes but most people seem to enjoy the fishing and say the quality of the fish is good.
