My wife and thoroughly enjoyed our weekend stay at Manor Lodge that was the perfect base for attending a friends wedding at Mount Edgcumbe House, which is located close by. The hosts Megan and Dick were super friendly and even gave us a lift to Cawsand Beach ,so we could enjoy the Wedding Reception having no worries about driving! . We stayed in Room One that was spacious and spotless with an en-suite bathroom with a large corner bath and separate shower cubicle. Although we didn't take up the breakfast option, we were priovided with ample snacks and beverage facilities that certainly saw us through. We also had use of a large comfy lounge and there was ample space outside for safe off street parking. Strong free Wifi. All positive and would defo stay here again.

Four in a Bed Winner? ( very much needed 2021 update) We have no idea when this award was made but clearly they continue to trade in on the Channel 4 show. Again, we have no idea on the quality of the opposition at that time, but it is highly worrying if this establishment was the winner. Please find a September 2021 review. How were your hosts at the Manor Lodge Guesthouse? 0 out of 10 Non-existent for three days and then all over us like a rash (as predicted) prior to 10am check out time. At the time of out booking we received T&C’s in respect of Covid -19 protocols and their following of government guidelines stressing the late check in at 5pm and early check out at 10am was strict to allow for ‘the heavy cleaning schedule’. We also received notification that breakfast would be provided as a ‘to go box’ again in line with government guidelines. However, the entire UK had removed all the Covid restrictions and fully opened up at the time of our stay, all apart from the Manor Lodge Guesthouse. We presumed breakfast would be back in the dinning room and our host there to greet us as we stayed in B&B’s and hotels on route all of which were all providing full hospitality, as incidentally were the two pubs in the village of Millbrook itself. On the day of arrival we received a text message from Megan at 4.30pm informing us our room was ready and instructions that the property was left unlocked and our key was in our allocated room. The ‘to go’ breakfast also needed to be ordered prior to 8pm by text or email. Breakfast arrived late the next morning, due at 9am but arrived at 9.20am, I also had to send further text and email as Megan as she had not confirmed our order was received. Bacon & egg sandwich and a sausage & mushroom sandwich received. Neither travel well but they were at least warm. The accompanying yogurt, breakfast cereal bar and child’s drink box were cheap and nasty. No plates or cutlery available downstairs or in our room. We ate in the room as no other area provided. We place all the packaging in the bin and went out for the day. On our return from a day out the room had not been serviced including the bin with smelly food packaging, I had to remove this and look for an outside bin; a chore I had to undertake each day of our 3 day stay as the room went unserviced throughout our stay. Plates and cutlery did appear on day 2 put no supplies to clean them with such as a scourer sponge and washing up liquid. We had to utilise the bath to rinse the dirty items, less than ideal especially during their enhanced Covid-19 cleanliness regime. How clean was the Manor Lodge Guesthouse? 2 out of 10 The late check in was to enable a heavy cleaning schedule - “allegedly”. Please see the images showing evidence to the contrary. Both ceiling lights covered in thick dust and cobwebs, a build up that only occurs over an extended period of time. Even more worrying was the build up of dust in the bathroom in the area around the bin, clearly this was not moved to enable cleaning prior to our visit. Cobwebs on the bathroom wall to the side of the toilet and bath was another unwelcome surprise. A sponge and bath cleaner were supplied, but yes we had to clean this ourselves. The bedding was clean on the surface, we were not brave enough to examine any further. How were the facilities at the Manor Lodge Guesthouse? 1 out of 10 The most basic and cheapest items supplied. A plastic mini kettle, likewise with a travel hair dryer. The penny pinching continues with the cheap bedding set. A small table top refrigerator was placed in the communal sitting room with milk. We also had three bottles of water on our arrival which did not get replenished during our entire three day stay. Neither did the tea, coffee or biscuits. The most annoying example of penny pinching was a small TV and separate Freeview box. The TV was only just bigger than my iPad Pro and was wall mounted about 4m from the bed. I have 6/5 corrected vision but was unable to read the TV guide or scrolling news headlines it was so small. We resorted to watching the news on the iPad luckily Wi-Fi was available. One drawer of the chest of drawers was broken, an historic attempted repair was a large woodscrew on each side but this had also failed. The drawer front was just balanced in position. Would you stay here again? NO, never. After 3 nights of being in the ‘Mary Celeste’ with no hosts or any other guests and all communication with the owner being via text and email sure enough as we predicted Megan was there at 9am on our check out day. I got the text message breakfast had been delivered and went to collect from the reception. I had no interest in speaking to Megan but now she wanted to be chatty; too little - too late as far as we were concerned and more importantly our breakfast was getting even colder as she talked. On the final day we had both opted for sausage sandwiches but they had clearly now run out of sausages and bulked out our two sandwiches with something that looked like either processed beef burger of meatloaf (See images) and yes, I had to throw the waste food and packaging out in the external bin myself. My wife escaped to our car without ever meeting Megan. I placed the keys at reception and Megan was remarkably present again at 9.30am as we made our bid for freedom. I took the opportunity to pass on the Megan how unpleasant our stay was. She immediately defended this by saying she had caught Covid from a guest and that is why they still operated in the remote way. I should point out she was not wearing a face mask. She went on to say that her cost had increased with all the extra cleaning! Covid was again used as ‘it is what it is in these Covid times’. When she mentioned extra cleaning I knew then it was time for me to leave rather than engage any further. Despite continually playing the Covid card Megan clearly has a found a business model that she can be a B&B host with about 10 minutes total outlay per day during a guests stay. Drop off a poor quality breakfast and pick up the odd text and email and even then fails to respond to those sent to her with only one room occupied. Please note - Full payment was taken the day before we arrived, again the Manor Lodge Guesthouse was alone in this aspect throughout our entire staycation holiday period in England and Wales. We went on to stay in the Park Plaza in Cardiff which was fantastic, great modern clean room with a fully equipped gym, pool and spa along with the bar and restaurant. Tea, coffee, water and biscuits all replenished each day along with housekeeping. All fully open and here is the clincher - it was cheaper per night than our stay at the Manor Lodge Guesthouse. We had commitments in the area so needed to be in Millbrook but wish we had stayed at the nearby pub, the Devon and Cornwall, where we did eat and drink and it was very good. The Manor Lodge Guesthouse would be poor value for money at half the price we paid, £99 per night. Pandemic profiteering by the owners is the best we can say. If Megan has genuine health concerns then she should not open up to the public, certainly not in the hospitality industry. Do yourself a favour and note our poor experience.

Response from Megan Edgcumbe, Owner at Manor Lodge Guesthouse B&B
Responded 17 Sept 2021
Dear Ashley, We are sorry if you could not accept that we are still mainly practicing Covid procedures in our guesthouse and have had to adjust with a new guest experience. We are disappointed that you did not enjoy the peace and tranquility that the house has to offer and noticed you did not take advantage of the courtyard with outside seating and seasonal planters to relax and enjoy your take away breakfast. We will soon be adding a continental breakfast for more choice of menu and welcome guests comments on our new guest experience regarding this. Perhaps a hotel was more in keeping with your requirements and would have been your best choice had Cornwall not been so fully booked. We did not take advatage of a price increase over the very busy season, making Manor Lodge Guesthouse still very good value for money. I am sorry you had a problem with accessibility. Unusual for us to hear this as guests love the layout and our laid back and relaxed attitude. Commenting during your stay, you told us how much you had enjoyed your visit. Knowing that you had some issues saddens me. As we are coming into Autumn the cobwebs appear rather quickly in these old houses. We are not a hotel and we do not enter a guests room unless requested. Had you requested a room service we would have been happy to do so. I am aware of the broken drawer and apologise that with the high turnaround of guests this has been overlooked. There is a certain charm of an old property and if you look at our website we do not airbrush over the 12th century house. My team and myself are really sorry that you decided to not come back to our beloved guest house and I have amended your guest profile to make sure you do ot book here ever again by mistake.

We stayed here for a wedding. 2 men in a twin room ! We loved our stay, a big welcome from the hostess and a run down of the local pubs. Went out for quit a few and the Bar Tusker was amazing. Great beer, lovely barmaid and the locals, once they had got used to our outrageous outfits were very friendly. The guest house itself was very homely. Comfy beds with all the facilities you can ask for. Breakfast, quick tip, don't eat it too fast as they will just give you more ! Great food and the host really made us feel welcome and full. Thanks so much for a great few days. 10 out of 10.

My husband, daughter and I stayed for two nights in two well appointed rooms with every comfort and Meghan the hostess could not have been more helpful. Homemade jams, none of the plastic wrapped things and a delicious breakfast with flexibility around time. A great base- we swam at Whitsand Bay, had dinner at Kingsand and loved the area. We were very lucky, glorious sun. Henrietta

Stayed here for 3 nights with my wife and two children for a family wedding. The B&B is in a beautiful old building in the pretty & quiet town of Millbrook and well located for local attractions. Megan was a lovely host, answered all our questions and couldn't have been more friendly and helpful pointing out local things to see/do - particularly the Green Man festival in Edgecombe that we visited on our last day which was great. Otherwise, we went to the Lost Gardens of Heligan and then the beach in Looe. As for the room, it was large and clean with a good size bathroom with a separate bath & shower. The kids had two camp beds which they said were very comfy as was our double bed. Were we to visit the area again, I would have no hesitation in staying here again.

Stayed as two friends in the twin room (room #3) for a night. Owner, Megan, very friendly, allowed us to check in early which was excellent as we had to get ready for a wedding. Taxi to coast /various wedding venues is about 10 minutes. Would recommend.

Just spent 2 nights here as I was working in the area. After a really long drive I bumped into Megan as I was walking my 2 dogs & she very kindly let us check in early. As people have said, the decor is a tad dated but it’s homely & charming & everything is in keeping with the character of the building. Dog friendly too so always a winner. Free on site parking which is also a bonus. I had room 3 - the twin. It had everything I needed for a short stay. Breakfast was absolutely fab, freshly cooked to order with quality ingredients & served with a smile. Best full English I’ve had in years. There isn’t much to do in the vicinity but we had some nice walks by the lake. The village has a couple of pubs & stores & an Indian restaurant (with zero atmosphere or alcohol!!!) Really enjoyed my stay & would be happy to return & recommend

We stayed here for two nights as we were at a wedding locally. The area is a lovely area, very west country British. Rolling hills, narrow roads and lovely buildings everywhere. The property comes with its own parking which was very good. On first thoughts, it did appear a little dated. However as we started to get comfortable it became more homely. We were with two other couples, so we had effectively booked the place out for ourselves as it only has three rooms. I would say it would be much better booking this with other people you know as the layout doesn't allow for segregation. The living room/dining area is all shared. Our bathroom was nice. Big bath and a shower which sprays you from all directions, and the water pressure was great whilst maintaining the heat. Once again the bathroom is looking a little tired but wouldn't take much to bring it back to full strength. The breakfast was excellent. You couldn't fault it. And because the place was fully booked for us, we felt more relaxed and felt that the lady and gentleman who was serving us gave a more personalised service. The breakfast was cooked fresh using local produce, we had as much toast as we required/desired. The room, once again was dated but had everything you needed. The bed was extremely comfortable. I had a back operation last year, so I notice the comfort of beds a lot more by the aches and pains and wake up with. I had none. My own bed at home I wake up aching, but this one was so comfortable. The gentleman who also ran the B&B even gave us a lift to the wedding venue to save us a taxi trip. The only thing I can say against this place is that the furniture in the rooms are a little dated, but wouldn't need much to bring it up to being more modern. However I would urge people not to let this put you off booking. It is still a great place to stay. And they won four in a bed

My husband and I stayed with two other couples (friends) as we were going to a wedding nearby. This little bed and breakfast is fantastic for This purpose, a little bit too intimate for me to stay with people I don’t know but for the purpose we stayed for, we couldn’t have stayed anywhere better. The breakfast is fantastic, plenty of gluten free options and such a great selection of jams and the cheese of toast was incredible. The breakfast was faultlessly cooked and served. The twin room we stayed in was comfortable, clean and had everything we needed. The other bedrooms were much more spacious with the double beds but we couldn’t fault the cleanliness and facilities provided to us. This was my first experience of a more personal host experience and once we had checked in we were made to feel welcome. The 4pm check in for us seemed to be quite late, especially for those guests like us who had travelled hours and hours since 4am to get to the location and all we wanted to do was just get in and get some sleep. One of the hosts took time out to take us down the road to the wedding venue which was incredibly kind and very much appreciated, these little touches make this place a little gem which is perfect for groups of friends of a family to hire out. I would very much recommend this place to stay, somewhere with lots of character and hosts who have equally as much.
