Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The welcome by Simon and his Wife made me feel at home straight away. I was shown to my lovely room, overlooking the gardens. (Which was full of pheasants and other wildlife)
The room was spacious and extremely clean.
I stayed here on business during the lockdown period in the UK, so obviously all the guests were socially distanced and I was extremely impressed with how Simon and his staff ran this fine establishment with all the rules and regulations during the pandemic.
The menu was absolutely amazing, with all the meat sourced locally and I had one of the best mixed grills I’ve eaten! Then it was time to relax outside for an hour or so, watching the wildlife and winding down from an extremely busy day.
I woke up feeling so relaxed and refreshed and when I went to get breakfast, orange juice, coffee and the Continental breakfast was set out. I changed my mind for the breakfast (from cooked breakfast, to haddock and poached eggs) and oh my days. It was heavenly. I was asked if there was anything else Simon and the staff could do for me and I was already more then happy with the hospitality I received.
If you want to relax, wind down and consume amazing food and beverages, then I can’t recommend The Apple Tree enough. The food was 5* quality, the whole atmosphere was 5* quality and the hospitality was 5* quality.
I can not wait to revisit for my next stay and I will be recommending this wonderful hotel to all my friends and family for a relaxing break.

We stayed at the hotel for 2 nights to attend a friends wedding at Quantock Lakes, ideal
Location for the venue just a mile down the road. Simon the owner made us feel very welcome. Nothing too much trouble
Comfortable rooms
We ate in the on site restaurant the first night, lovely home cooked food and nightly specials.
Plenty of parking on site and bonus of an on-site bar .
Would stay again…

I had booked to visit Hestercombe Gardens and we decided to stay overnight and explore the coast. Simon was very reassuring over the phone about the new Covid procedures, which on arrival were very clear and the hotel very clean. Simon was a very welcoming, attentive host who also made great suggestions about places to visit.
Dinner and breakfast were delicious with lots of choice.
Really enjoyed our stay and would like to go back and do some walking in the Quantocks.
We felt very relaxed throughout, initial anxieties about staying away from home quickly disappeared.

Excellent overnight stay. We were well looked after by Simon and his team. An excellent dinner, a good night sleep - room 9 is nice and quiet - with a good breakfast in the morning (unusually breakfast is served from 6:30am if you need to leave early).

I feel a bit mean only giving this hotel four stars, because it is very good (come on TA, let us do half stars!)... as you'll see from the other reviews this hotel has some traditional rooms in the old part of the property, but also has a newer extension.

We were in two of the single rooms in the older part of the hotel.

The rooms were perfectly fine - the ensuite has been well done (I've seen worse bathrooms in some of the large hotel chains), and the rooms are clean. Beware that some doors are quite low though!

Because we were meeting friends who live locally we didn't make use of the restaurant for breakfast or dinner, so can't comment on those other than to commend Simon who called up to ask if I'd like breakfast (even though technically it was after the end of service!).

The downside, and the reason it's not a clear five stars, is the A39. There's nothing the hotel can do about this, so it feels a little unfair, but the road is busy, and dangerous. You really can't walk anywhere from the hotel directly, and I wouldn't recommend trying to cycle either - the road is narrow, with hedges close on each side, no path, and large lorries and buses travelling rapidly along it. Even turning out of the property in a car feels risky, and is certainly risky enough that they've put up a no right turn sign!

Having said that I would definitely recommend the hotel.

Positives
* Friendly people
* Pleasant rooms
* Price
* Much more character than an Ibis!

Negatives
* A39

Recently stayed here, all the staff were very friendly and helpful. Food is excellent. Evening meals are also provided, but book in advance otherwise you may not get in. Room was clean. Only drawback is that it fronts onto a busy main road. Would stay again.

Although all the staff are very pleasant at this hotel, I feel that I need to mitigate some
of the reviews here, as all three of us found the price and the reviews misleading for the experience we had.

The staff and the breakfast were very good. That’s where the good ended for us. The twin bedded and single rooms we were given, were very dated and ours had a smoky/musty smell. It wasn’t dirty, as such, but not to the standard of 4.5 star reviews and definitely not worth the money paid. The over bath shower lacked any pressure and the extractor made a horrendous noise whenever the bathroom light was turned on. The walls were thin and we could hear everything from our neighbours throughout the night.

We were very sad to hear your stay was not to your liking. The hotel has evolved over the last 100 years and the rooms are very varied, our twin rooms are of solid wall construction, if we had known the guests next door were being particularly noisy we would have addressed this. The bathroom fan has been replaced along with a new shower head. We have no control over the ratings on Tripadvisor, we achieve our score purely through customer satisfaction. We are also a 3 star AA hotel and inspected annually to maintain this rating. Prices will vary based on demand in the area. We do our utmost to ensure our guests enjoy their stay with us and we are sorry you didn't on this occasion.

Awful experience. Booked luxury 4 poster room and was a hi de bungalow with pine weird four poster.
Cheap furniture and toiletries. Evening meal, which I left was dire . Tasteless things, not home made sauté potatoes and sole, are they joking? I live near Hastings and this was not fresh. Dreadful not home made cream sauce with cheap little pink prawns. They even had gammon with a tinned pineapple ring on on the menu
Plastic flowers in hanging basket!
Didn’t go to breakfast and someone tried the door. My husband then told me travellers had arrived! Loud music and washing on bushes.
Another couple agreed with us.
We are used to better and booked this due to reviews.
Also I object to grotty loo brushes being near the loo so that my dress touched it. Forgot to say not fresh carrots which could be mashed.
Avoid !

We were very disappointed to read your comments. We don't purport to be a luxury hotel but we are a quality 3 star AA rated hotel which is inspected by them to ensure that standards, furnishings and food are maintained and meet their criteria. This is also reflected by the great number of positive reviews we receive about our friendly, family run Hotel and our delicious food.

We stayed in a number of hotels as we were doing a little tour of the area. We had the best dinner from far. Amazing that a man on his own run the hotel and was the chef at the same time when you compared it to big chains. The staff was friendly and honestly very genuine.
They wore masks at all time.

The rooms were cleaned and comfortable.

A jewel that reminded us how much we miss having that personal touch that big hotels can't quite give you.

My wife and I stayed for three nights in this very pleasant hotel. Peaceful and very friendly hosts, and the quality of the food was excellent. If I had to find a negative, it’s that the room we were in was a little small and dark due to the overhanging bushes. Despite that, I can highly recommend staying here.
