Just returned from a weeks holiday, staying at the Hotel De France
Based on previous reviews we booked a Spa Room, which it turns out is in the newer part of the hotel
Large spacious and very comfortable room, with a large floor to ceiling window and a large patio door giving access to an outside balcony
Hotel itself was immaculate and very comfortable, with everything you need to enjoy a relaxing stay
Breakfast was “continental” although hot food was available and other options could be ordered for an additional cost
The food was delicious and plentiful, enough to set us up for the day
We did also dine at the hotel on a BBQ night, and it was one of the best meals we had throughout the week in Jersey
The walk into town took around 10/15 minutes and was actually quite pleasant, through the Millenium park and past some lovely independent shops and cafes, so don’t let it put you off
If we return to Jersey, we would certainly stay at this hotel, and would highly recommend it to anyone else

During the Covid 19 crisis the trick for hotels and hospitality businesses is to create a clean safe environment whilst helping clients to enjoy themselves in as normal environment as possible. Not an easy trick to pull off but the Hotel de France carries it off well.

As part of their Covid regime everyone has their temperature taken on an automatic monitor on the way to reception every time they enter or re enter the hotel which is very reassuring. Room cleaning is flexible and easy to arrange what you wish to have done every day under Covid regs.

The hotel is well appointed and clean. With easy parking if you hire a car. Our room was in the new section. It was modern, large, had a great view over St Helier, and a small balcony which fitted two seats and a table adequately. It’s slightly out of the centre of St Helier but only a c20 minute easy walk in.

The breakfasts were good and the menu was reasonably extensive given the restrictions on buffets under Covid. We stayed for five nights and ate dinner at the hotel twice and enjoyed both meals. The Halibut and pork loin were really good.

The staff were all outstanding. From the reception through to the lady who helped with the cleaning of the rooms. They were friendly, professional and gave the sense of operating as a team. Nothing was too much trouble.

If I was nit picking I prefer my breakfast coffee brewed and not out of a machine but Covid regs must.

Booked 12 nights from the 14th to 26th Aug in the Hotel de France with my wife and 2 teenage children.
Firstly, the staff at the reception are very welcoming and helpful. Our room was smaller than we are used to but as we requested aircon this may be the reason. By son (16) and daughter (19) had a room each and these were adequate. In summary all our rooms were fine, well equipped and kept spotlessly clean by the house keeping team. They were a bit dated; the rooms not the staff! Free wi-fi is available so if travelling with a device driven family there will be no problems there.
We were only booked for breakfast which was plentiful and with lots of choices. If you like a cooked breakfast sausages (award winning apparently), bacon and scrambled egg were available and very nice! A full English could be ordered at an extra cost. We ate one evening meal in the hotel which was nice but expensive. The restaurant staff were friendly and tried their best to quickly find us a table for 4 each morning as some guests thought it OK to sit and chat over coffee whilst other guests had to wait for a table. Not a real drama but it was irritating and not the staffs fault.
The Spa and gym facilities are excellent and modern. We used the pool most days which was lovely. Booking was needed and time limited to an hour which was enough. Again, the Spa team were helpful and friendly.
There are plenty of local restaurants and pubs to choose from and all produced good meals. The Five Oaks stood out as they served the best lasagne I’ve eaten outside of Italy! Also The White Horse bar and brassiere deserves a mention. At the time of our visit last meal bookings had to be at 8pm as the whole island shut down at 9pm due to lockdown. Jersey Freedom Day was 26th Aug.
Some great days out in Jersey, like the War Tunnels and zoo. Lots of excellent sandy beaches with good safe swimming and water sport’s.
We took our car and never had a problem parking either in the hotel or the beaches that we visited. Our car is quite large so some of the narrow roads were a challenge which probably explains the high number of smaller hired vehicles about the island.
In summary the Hotel de France is a very nice hotel and although the interior decor is a bit dated this adds to its charm. Staff are friendly and helpful and keen to please. Housekeeping staff in particular are a credit to the hotel as our rooms were always spotless after their visit. With its close proximity to St Helier the Hotel de France has a lot going for it. We would go back if returning to the island.

Starting with the massage we paid £85 each for; there was no massaging involved. I felt like I was being basted like a piece of meat with scented oils, my breasts were exposed twice and the experience was more of an awkward back rub than a full body massage. The beanbag she placed over my eyes must have had oil on it, as I quite literally had blurred vision for 30 minutes afterwards.

I can only assume the basting was a lead up to the furnace of a room we stayed in. The room was so hot I woke up from the 2 hours of sleep I managed to get drowning in my own sweat. The fan they provided was old and let out as much air as the woman coughing over my boyfriend during his massage!

The hotel room decorator is still living in the 60s and the electronics / plumbing must have been set-up by a team with a wicked sense of humour. You had to play with the main lights to get the bathroom lights working and couldn't run a tap whilst showering otherwise the dribble of water would turn ice cold (which I suppose is a blessing given the heat of the place).

Big shout-out to the guy with a chainsaw at 7am and the workmen on the hotels building site no one mentioned at the time of booking, you're a treasure to the hotel service and really key to a peaceful stay!

I will say the dinner was very good and the waiter service was also... I wish I could say the same about breakfast, runny scrambled eggs, shriveled sausages and burnt coffee ... mmmm appetising.

The receptionist asked us how our stay was whilst she waited for the printer to work, my boyfriend explained the poor sleeping experience and she could not care less to hear our feedback.

I get the impression that they have given up and will likely let the place go in to disrepair so it can be sold to be refurbished in to flats like the rest of the hotels in Jersey.

£400 to be treated like a turkey on Christmas day ... well fed and cooked overnight.

What a lovely Hotel, elevated so you have great views over St Helier, you can walk in to the City Centre takes about 15 mins but worth the walk, plenty of free parking at the Hotel, bedroom very spacious with good quality bathroom and the hotel offers one of the best spa's facilities I have been to extremely clean and tidy, staff very polite and accommodating. We hired a fiat 500 for the 3 days which was enough to get round the island, petrol cheaper than the UK, you can also use English money. So bottom line, nice hotel, nice people and great location

My wife and I spent a week here in September. All the reception staff were very helpful, especially Julie who was on duty when we arrived. All were prepared to book restaurants for us for our evening meals. All the staff were happy and smiling. The hotel runs an infrequent shuttle bus to the centre of St Helier but it is only a 20 minute walk down and there are three bus routes that pass the front of the hotel.

The two lifts are small and it is clearly pointed out – Covid has not gone away – that members of different households should not share the lifts.

We had a good size room, with plenty of wardrobe and drawer space, and a very simple to use safe. It had a large table and three chairs, two fan heaters, a proper hairdryer and a large TV with English French and German channels. The bathroom good size. I am not a fan of showers over baths but in our room the screen did do a good job of keeping water off the floor. There were plenty of toiletries refilled daily – shower gel, shampoo, conditioner and body lotion. Towels were changed daily.

Breakfast was excellent. There was a choice of five fruit juices, yoghurts, plenty of fresh fruit in individual dishes, a choice of four or five cereals, various breads and pastries. We did not try the basic hot breakfast of bacon, sausage and egg included but it looked good, so I could not understand why some people would pay extra for a full English breakfast.

We had only one gripe. Some evenings we had drinks on the terrace as the weather was so pleasant, but found a 10% service charge on our bill even though we carried our own drinks to the table!

Would we stay again – undoubtedly yes.

We stayed at the Hotel de France for a week and whilst we had a very enjoyable stay in Jersey the hotel was the one aspect of our whole trip that left us with a feeling that it could have been so much better. We pushed the boat out to stay at this more expensive accommodation, hoping that this, our first holiday since COVID, would be more exceptional on all fronts. The hotel is located on the edge of St.Helier but on good bus routes so access was not a problem. The hotel building and facilities have all the features for an outstanding review however the attention to detail and service left us wanting.
Our room was clean and serviced daily however with the servicing our bathroom accessories like soap were not replenished. By day 5 we were down to the butt of soap so had to ask for more soap and indeed we were then given 2 bars but it was frustrating to have to ask for something that should have been automatically supplied.
We visited the bar on a few evenings and each visit was as disappointing as the next; no coasters, slow service, tired and unkept terrace area, terrace “emergency” door left to bang close after each opening. Despite the expensive drinks there was no coasters or snacks with them, when we asked for bar snacks we were told that they “used to serve nuts but they’re hard to come by these days” - hardly a genuine or reasonable response for a 4 star hotel! This was then followed however by a suggestion for us to buy some crisps from reception, needless to say we didn’t do that.
The breakfast offering was extremely disappointing, a 3 star offering at best. The coffee and tea was from an automated machine despite a barista machine being in the area. The selection of breads, meats, cheeses and cereals was poor. Tables were barely set with just napkins and cutlery, no side plates or milk jug - the cold milk was served from a steel teapot at the coffee machine.
The bar/restaurant staff were pleasant but lacked training and there was an obvious absence of good management.
We loved our trip to Jersey and will be recommending it to friends and family but unfortunately Hotel de France won’t be on the list this time. Maybe with an investment in training and management this might change.

The outside of the building is impressive as is the reception area. We were welcomed warmly by the staff and did indeed found that every member of staff that we encountered were very helpful.and friendly. We had a spa room which did not disappoint. It was bright and large with a balcony.,super king size bed and a large well appointed shower room. We were pleased that the safe was free and there was a fridge and refreshments. It was a special anniversary for us and we were delighted with the gifts and card the hotel kindly left for us. Our room like the rest of the hotel was spotlessly clean. The swimming pool area was a relaxing and beautiful calm area.
Breakfast was a continental style with a few additions but a bigger choice at an additional cost. We found that what was provided suited our needs. Coffee/tea was a do it yourself affair but we loved the coffee.
We did eat in the hotel on two evenings but found the restaurant disappointing. If the covered veranda dining area is full then like us you are seated in the bar area where breakfast is served This is very brightly lit and does not create a nice atmosphere for dinner. There wasn’t a great deal of choice for us and it is quite expensive. They automatically add a 10% service charge . We were told by other guests that even if you go to the bar for drinks yourself this charge is added. The room we were seated in did not make us feel like we wanted to linger for drinks after eating our meal.
The hotel is a distance from the town and bus station and the shuttle bus is infrequent and finishes at 4 30 pm .
We really enjoyed our stay but the evening dining could be better.

The hotel is undergoing refurbishment and the effects of this are not made clear on their web-site. They say that the refurbishment will be complete by the end of March but fail to say that until then; there is no restaurant and the bar is closed. You are offered the Garden View restaurant which is no better than a cafeteria, and the part of the restaurant that overlooks the garden is full of junk. The bar is simply part of the spa area and not what you should expect from a four star hotel. Don't book here unless you understand the situation, at least until the refurb is complete.

On arrival, the reception staff were welcoming and friendly, being happy to help from calling taxis, answering enquiries and support with luggage. Our was a twin classic room. It was big enough for 2 of us, with a safe, larger wardrobe, tea and coffee facilities, clean bathroom, and a Dyson fan (which were for grateful for due to hot weather). Housekeeping staff cleaned our room everyday and changed towels. For our meal on the night, we asked a kind waitress about my mams gluten free diet due to her being a coeliac. She let all her staff know this and on breakfast the next morning my mam was offered gluten free cereals, grandpa, porridge, sausages and hash browns freshly made. The breakfast options were delightful, a range of fruit segments, breads, cheeses, granola, Jersey yoghurts, jams, pastries, cereals with fresh juice assortments as well as teas and coffees.
The pool and gym is free of charge as part of the room package. The main pool is large for a swim, with also having a massage pool and jacuzzi, cold plunge pool and a hot plunge pool. There was also a sauna and steam room. The spa receptionists provided you with towels, all you needed to do was come down in your dressing grown which is provided in your room. There is an entrance to the outdoor gardens from the spa area, with deck chairs and tables to enjoy the sun, which has proven to be popular.
There is a bar open at night time, and the balcony is amazing when it is hot, and you get good views of the sunsetting.
On checking out, this was quick and easy, and we left our luggage in a departure room whilst we spent a few hours in the town centre, which is a short walk from the hotel.
We will definitely be staying again. Thank you to all staff for your hard work!
