Four of us stayed for a week. All the staff could not have been more helpful, welcoming and happy. They knew us by first name within 24 hours. The rooms were comfortable, clean and so well equipped. We had researched before arriving the best restaurants on the island. In the event, we ate almost all the nights at the hotel as the meals were superbly memorable. We just weren't there long enough to attempt everything on the menu. And, the chocolate royal desert - well, forget your diet - simply not to be missed. A five star hotel and some. Thank you everybody there.

The hotel is about 25 minutes walk from the harbour and in a quiet location
The reception staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful.
Everywhere was very clean
We had a harbour view room with lovely views
The restaurant was pleasant but a bit expensive compared to other places. Bar snacks looked to be over priced
Terrace seating area was lovely but sometimes tables weren’t cleared very quickly so seagulls sat on tables eating nuts and breaking glasses.
Parking could be a bit of a challenge as only 5 designated spaces for the hotel and street parking was a bit tight
We did however thoroughly enjoy our stay.

Have just spent four nights in this charming hotel where we received the warmest possible welcome from the whole team. Every morning started with a delicious cooked breakfast in the conservatory or on the terrace before exploring beautiful Guernsey, returning to a spotless room with a great view of the shipping in the harbour. On our final evening taxi driver Gareth took us to the airport for our 6pm flight to Gatwick. Shortly after takeoff the plane was struck by lightning and had to turn back. After an anxious two hours wait the plane was declared unfit. Sadly the airline, Aurigny, after re-booking flights for the following day, declined to offer any help or advice with emergency transport and accommodation. In desperation we rang Gareth. Despite being off duty he offered, without hesitation, to abandon his dinner and rescue us from the airport, as there were no taxis or buses. He also called the hotel to confirm there was a room available. Back at the hotel Nelly greeted us like old friends and much valued guests. Gareth meanwhile returned to the airport to help other stranded passengers. At 530am he picked us up for our early morning flight. We simply can't commend Gareth and the hotel team enough. It's disappointing their support was not matched by Aurigny.

Our deluxe sea view room was extremely small and we had to pay to upgrade to a better room in order to be able to move around comfortably. The rooms are tired and in need of updating in terms of furnishings and fittings. I have not ever seen as much limescale on taps and this really needs to be addressed. We could hear the TV from the room next door most of the time which meant very thin walls.

The staff in the dining room at breakfast really need some training and direction. It may be better not to have them read from a script to ask you if you had slept well and let them be a bit more natural so they can focus on what they are doing. Each morning at breakfast we had long waits to get tea and coffee and generally had to ask at least one more time, sometimes twice. The food orders often got mixed up and seemed to go to the wrong table and there seemed to be a state of confusion most mornings. There was zero atmosphere, so quiet you felt you could not have a conversation so we didnt try it for evening meals.

The outside terrace is seriously under utilized and needs a spruce up and an injection of some soul to make guests want to sit and have a drink. There was one very nice bar man who tried very hard to give the space some life but the space is not appealing as it stands. On a nice sunny day and with the view down to the sea it should have been buzzing but this will only happen if they invest in updating and cleaning.

Some of the Reception staff were very nice but one in particular seemed to take issue with anything that was asked of her. The Hotel advertises free parking but there are about 5 spaces (none of which were available) and otherwise you have to find parking in the road and rent the parking dial system from the hotel - parking dials can be for 2 or 10 hours depending on where in the road you park so you are constantly having to worry about moving your car.

There is a lot of potential but not without some investment in fixtures, fittings and staff training.

Spent a week here whilst we visited our son. My wife is partially disabled and we hired a scooter for her to get around, first problem the entrance was all steps no disabled access.
Reception was good and very impressive. The room we were allocated I will describe as compact, especially the bathroom but did come with good quality towels and bedding with the hotels initials on. On the second day we returned to the room after breakfast to find the teapot had not been emptied, neither had the waste paper basket and there was still toothpaste in the sink. The biggest complaint was a face flannel with 4/5 tea and coffee stains on. As we had drunk only one cup of tea the flannel had been used in other rooms to clean the cups in those rooms. After a complaint to the duty manager a tray of fresh fruit appeared in the room. Only problem then was after 3 days the strawberries had mold on
The next problem for us was that entry to the restaurant was up three flights of stairs, it would appear that the disability act is not applicable to hotels in Guernsey.
We chose the conservatory for breakfast most mornings, several of the tiles were cracked and the chairs had chips out of them. The cold food was good and a plentiful supply, tea and coffee always took a long time to arrive and we did experience problems with the hot food. A cheese omlette came without the cheese, when that happened a second time it was it was sent back. We had got into the habit of asking for extra cheese to make sure we did get some cheese. I know it was written down on our order as I watched the server write it down. The staff were very young and lacked experience but all very polite. A special mention goes to Chlaris always a pleasure to be served by her. To be fair we did receive a discount on our final bill for our problems. A nice touch though was the hotel is part of a chain and all the staff wore red carnations
Would we visit Guernsey again YES we loved the place. Would we visit The Richmond again NO a very expensive 4 star hotel that needs some TLC and the problems sorting out and quickly before all the guests return

Situated about a 15 minute walk, uphill, from the resort "front",this hotel seemed to be stuck in the middle of the 1930/40's with its decor and demeanor!
Our room was fine, yet it seemed "dated"with a fabric wallpaper, mirrored drawers on furniture, just seemed as if we were on a film set,but that was our feeling!Bathroom was large and well equipped.
Must mention that service and cleaning was good, although you never knew at what time of day you would get seen to,one day whilst at breakfast, the next late afternoon, then lunchtime the day after that!
The hotel boasts an enclosed private swimming pool(towels provided) sun loungers and several terraces.
Reception staff were brilliant, especially Bellen and Beth, whatever you needed,24 hrs a day, just ring down whether it was just for a jug of fresh milk for a cup of tea, book a taxi or another pillow
Meals in the restaurant, well breakfast was brilliant, again,we were on the bed and breakfast option(don't do half board) during our stay, choices were numerous, cold things like cereals, fruit, croissants, cold meats and juices, you just helped yourself, cooked breakfasts, just tell your server what you wanted, bacon, sausages, hash browns, black pudding, beans, tomatoes, mushrooms and however you wanted an egg, think you'll get the picture!
Different story at dinner,we didn't think the choices were that numerous, plus we thought the prices a little bit too expensive for the options,we,my wife and I had basically what was burger and chips one evening, with "trimmings",2 beers for me,1 for my wife sixty odd pounds(a double figure percentage "tip"is added to your bill automatically! Went out to eat the rest of week!

Dear Ian W, Thank you for taking the time to share your review following your recent stay at The Duke of Richmond Hotel. We really enjoyed reading about your stay, particularly that the food and service from our reception staff Beth and Belen was excellent. I have shared your comments with them and it made them very proud to be part of the Red Carnation team. I was also pleased to hear that breakfast was a positive experience, and take on board your comments about the Menu for dinner. The service charge is deductible upon request at the time of settling the bill, however please accept my apologies if this was not communicated to you. Every Red Carnation Hotel features individually designed bedrooms and public areas and we thank you for your thoughts regarding the decoration of the hotel. We do our best to advise guests in advance that the Hotel is at the top of a hill, however, thank you for your feedback. Our housekeeping team have a varied workload day to day, and I am sorry that the variety of times did not meet with your expectations in regard to bedroom servicing, however was glad to read that the quality of the cleaning was good. It was our pleasure to have hosted you, and we hope very much to have the chance to welcome you back again in the future. Kind regards Gareth Byrne General Manager

The 3 most notable observations we had about this hotel were a) all the staff were extremely courteous and obliging, each would be an ambassador for any hospitality venue b) the refurbishments have been designed with a very distinctive palette of colour and style. It looks as though someone has gone to a great deal of trouble to make the communal areas stand out and had fun sourcing furnishings to go with the styling and c) the hotel is pretty much close the highest point of St Peter Port. Great for the sea view room we booked, but a little bit of cardio workout each time you walk back from the town centre.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, our only niggles were minor. For somewhere so service orientated it seemed strange to receive our breakfast tea/coffee well into the completion of our breakfast on a few occasions, twice after our cooked breakfast had been finished. During covid times it seemed odd not to have soap in the rooms, we bought our own. 2 of the 3 dispensers in the shower didn't work, we mentioned it and were encouraged to try again, but the maid explained that many guests were struggling to get them to work, she couldn't.

If we come to Guernsey again I would have no hesitation in choosing this hotel or its sister hotel (which is a little nearer the town centre).

Dear Alistair M, What a lovely review of your recent experience at The Duke of Richmond Hotel. I would like to thank you for finding the time to share your observations with other travellers and doing it with such a good humour. I was thrilled to learn that all the members of our friendly team that you encountered during your stay were courteous and welcoming. It’s wonderful that you noted a great attention to detail in the hotel design; its contrasting palette of colours, a combination of antique and modern pieces that make our hotel interiors so unique. I am very sorry that we could not deliver otherwise a perfect service in a couple of areas, with many new staff members still undergoing training at the time of your visit. We are confident that next time you stay with us your hot drinks will precede your cooked breakfast as they should and that you could fully enjoy the luxurious range of Floris toiletries provided in our bedrooms. We hope that we will have another opportunity to welcome you back to our hotel soon for another relaxing and enjoyable stay with us. Yours sincerely, Gareth Byrne General Manager

The service at this hotel is excellent
Everyone calls you by your name. Nothing is too much trouble and small requests easily accommodated. The rooms were very comfortable with beautiful linen and pillows
My only small complaint was that to have a sea view you had to pay for an upgrade which I decided I did not need. The breakfast menu is extensive including fresh juices and a good selection of hot and cold dishes

The hotel's location is good. 15 mins by taxi from the airport, just a couple of minutes' walk from Candie Garden and short 10-15 min stroll to St Peter Port town centre.

The arrival experience was excellent - friendly and welcoming, with an offer of help with my luggage. The Classic Double was small, but with the exception of a few light stains on the carpet and a dated TV was well maintained and appointed. Initially, I found the sleep quality poor (a very firm standard thickness mattress, two single beds made up as a double with no mattress topper) however upon raising, it was well handled and resolved by the management.

Breakfast was included in the rate. Service was varied across the stay - staff being pleasant but often not attentive. In terms of food, some room for improvement, e.g. quality of bread for toast is poor, the porridge was runny and lumpy.

Whilst a couple of issues, still a good base for exploring Guernsey.

My wife and I spent a week here on a bed and breakfast basis. On our arrival the staff on the reception desk were very welcoming. During our stay Nellie was especially helpful, always meeting us with a smile, and recommending and booking some excellent restaurants for our dinners.

Our room was spacious and clean, with plenty of wardrobe and drawer space, desk space and table, chairs, bedside cabinets and a large flatscreen TV. An easy to operate safe was inside the wardrobe. Bottles of still and sparkling water were provided every day. The bathroom had a shower over the bath. There were plenty of shower gel, shampoo, conditioner and body lotion, with bath towels, hand towels and face cloths, bathrobes and slippers.

Breakfast was superb. There was a choice of about five fruit juices, yogurts, three or four different cereals, plenty of fresh fruit, various breads and pastries. Our package included a cooked breakfast (and again there was a huge choice) but after the first morning I did not order one because it was so filling! My one gripe about breakfast was that there appeared to be too many chiefs and not enough indians, so guests had to wait for a table and frequently wait for the orange juice jug to be refilled.

We had dinner in the restaurant once (on the Sunday evening when many of the restaurants in St Peter Port are closed) but felt it was not really good value for money - my “rack of lamb” contained just two small pieces of meat!

We were lucky with the weather and we were able to have a late afternoon drink on the hotel terrace every day, enjoying the lovely view across to Sark. We did not use the outdoor pool, but it looked very inviting.

If we ever return to Guernsey we would have no hesitation in returning to the Duke of Richmond Hotel.
