Just had the loveliest stay in this magical spot. The Henley is a comfortable and light filled Edwardian house sited on a cliff top overlooking Bigbury sands and the delta of the river Avon. The sea views are spectacular from every room. The bedrooms are all spacious and the beds are feather filled with crisp white linens. The hotel is run by a very hard working couple called Petra and Martin who manage to be about when you need help but never intrusive. Quite the magic trick ! Beach towels and dressing gowns were offered for a morning dip. There is a private beach just below the house which is a bit of a scramble down rocky steps but the work out helps you feel less guilty about scoffing a delicious full Devon breakfast. We had booked in for dinner and I can confirm that Martin is a very good chef. The menu was short and seasonal and everything we tried was excellent. We particularly enjoyed the crab salad and the sea bass. Portions were generous and puddings were a happy mix of fresh fruit salads or steamed puddings with custard. We were a group of four and all felt like the menu worked for all tastes and levels of greed !. It’s a complicated time for the hospitality industry but The Henley seem to be handling the new rules with style and grace. There were Perspex screens between dining tables and the choice to take breakfast outdoors on the sun terrace - which was lovely. The house is immaculately clean throughout ( all bathrooms and shared upholstery were steam cleaned daily) social distancing was handled elegantly and responsibly with a one way traffic system operating in and out of the house. I really wanted to write a review to reassure anyone who might be debating about whether or not to travel. Be reassured you will be safe, well looked after and happy at The Henley. It’s pretty perfect there !

This small friendly hotel is an absolute gem and its hosts Martin and Petra go out of their way to provide their guests with an unforgettable experience. Upon arrival, you are greeted by Petra who immediately makes you feel at home by showing you to your room and offering you tea or coffee and homemade cake to be eaten out on the terrace overlooking the sea. The atmosphere is most relaxed with Casper, the family’s docile Labrador, wandering around the place. Our dual-aspect room was enormous having originally been two rooms which were converted by Martin into just one in order to provide every room with a sea view. One of the highlights of our stay were the excellent dinners and breakfasts. The meals cooked by Martin were consistently of the highest quality and beautifully presented with notable examples being a large monkfish fillet with a lobster sauce, a succulent fillet steak with a peppercorn sauce and three tender lamb cutlets with a perfect fondant potato. All the ingredients were sourced locally and the substantial breakfasts were equally as good. Our bedroom and bathroom were both very well-equipped and fresh milk was also provided as were a pair of binoculars and an interesting selection of books. It was virtually impossible to find anything negative to say about this most delightful hotel and it certainly exceeded our expectations in every way.

What a place ! Having recently stayed for 3 nights, my husband and I have only praise for this hotel. The welcome we received from Petra was warm and friendly and we were shown to a room with an amazing sea view. Every meal was delicious ( Martin is great Chef) and there is a good drinks selection. The hotel is close to the beach at Bigbury and there are some great walks nearby. During these Covid times all precautions are being used and we felt safe and at home. Sitting in the garden with a gin and tonic overlooking the tide coming into Bantham will live long in our memories. Brilliant!

We stayed at The Henley Hotel 28 years ago and loved it so much we’ve always wanted to return. We were delighted to have this opportunity this year and loved it just as much. The hospitality offered by Petra and Martin is wonderful and breakfast is delicious. Evening meals are fantastic and not to be missed!!
They are very conscious of the Covid virus and have taken every precaution possible to make you feel relaxed and safe. The bedrooms are very comfortable with stunning sea views to wake up to. We look forward to the next opportunity to return.

This is such a special place. The stunning home, unbelievable location and incredible food would be enough to warrant a 5* review. What stands it apart even more are the personal touches and extra effort put in to make your stay extra special. There for my mums birthday, it was nothing at all for the owner Pitra to arrange a cake, decorated by her and her daughter to make my mum feel as special as possible. It really is a family affair here that strives to make you feel like an extended member of their family. Just beautiful, with lovely rooms, a private beach on bantham, and stunning views across to Burgh island. Just wonderful!

This hotel was recommended to us as we wanted to get away, somewhere not too far,(we live in West Dorset), during this Pandemic. It ticked every box.
Spotless rooms, magnificent views, exceptionally friendly and welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble. Breakfasts were amazing, (especially my porridge with a shot of Amaretto to start my day!) Sitting out on their terrace after a day of walking, with a pot of tea and slices of lemon cake, watching the sea and the paddle boarders, was a real tonic. The evening meal that Martin cooked was top class. This is a place we would not hesitate to recommend.

We have just spent 2 fabulous nights on a DB&B basis. Everything about this stay was perfect! The accommodation is gorgeous with lots of thoughtful touches, examples being bath robes and heated towel rails. Martyn is an exceptional chef and the food was not only delicious but of a very high standard. Petra made us feel very spoilt and was always going out of her way to make sure that we were looked after.
Martyn, Petra and their team run this delightful establishment with warmth and hospitality that is often lacking in many places. We would thoroughly recommend that anyone staying in this area consider staying here- oh and the views are to die for!

We have just returned from our second visit to the wonderful Henley Hotel. Our first was in swelteringly hot July 2022 and our second in wild and windy March 2023. The weather does not matter, what matters is the warm welcome and stunning location and comfortable rooms with spectacular views. The bedrooms, sitting and dining rooms look out over the beach and estuary and a short walk takes you onto the beach and over to Burgh Island when the tide is out. But none of that matters, we would stay in a dungeon if we were looked after by Petra and cooked for by Martyn, the only cook I would trust to cook fish apart from my husband. The food is 5* expertly cooked and beautifully presented. As we left we heard what was on the menu for that night and didn’t want to go home.

Normally somewhere in the med for our holidays but for obvious reasons decided to stay in the U.K. this year.
Thank goodness because otherwise we would never have discovered this absolute gem of a small hotel.
The lovely greeting from Petra, our room with fantastic views and so well serviced everyday, the gourmet dinner dishes served up by Martyn (accompanied by Petras’ excellent home made rolls!) , the views from the decking and the garden…. I could go on but this should give you the idea that we couldn’t fault the place.
If there’s a better place to stay than this for a relaxing holiday in the U.K. we have yet to find it.

My wife and I had our first post lockdown break at The Henley Hotel last week; what a gem! Petra's warm welcome started things well and it only got better; the room had a spectacular view across the estuary towards Bantham, then dinner was cooked by Martyn and was thoroughly delicious.
This married couple work as a great team to deliver a relaxing and delightful small hotel experience. Petra is on hand to make sure your every need is sorted and Martyn cooks with great, fresh, local produce to produce excellent meals (breakfast is fantastic and dinner is always a delight). He's particularly adept at cooking fish well, if crab tian or sea bream appear on the menu, grab it! The menu and wine list are both relatively short, but there's not a dud on either!
The only challenge is walking the beautiful coastal paths enough to work off breakfast and make room for dinner.
The Henley Hotel cannot be recommended highly enough. We'll be returning!
