Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Friendly, comfortable and welcoming with spectacular views and food worthy of Michelin Stars. If you are looking for DB&B in Bigbury you can be confident that your every need will be taken care of. Martyn and Petra have thirty years experience running the business and it shows.

It is difficult to be different from other reviews in explaining how good this experience is. If you read other reviews, then please let me say how accurate they are. Martin and Petra are wonderful hosts, the rooms are well-thought-out and comfortable, everything you need is at hand. Food here is first class and as good as any I have had in the past. Location and views are fantastic. A relaxing comfortable experience, I would recommend the Henley as being worth booking if contemplating a visit to Devons South coast.

Friendly, comfy and food to die for (and dog friendly too). Stayed for 4 nights and made very welcome: food unmatched by anywhere we have been, and that is saying something. Anyone else who cooks like that would have Michelin stars but I suspect they are just too modest. Beautiful sea views and nicely furnished - the perfect small hotel. Casper the resident Labrador must be the most mellow dog in the world too!

Petra was so attentive, friendly and helpful, you couldn't ask for anything more. When we arrived we had coffee and cake and even biscuits for our dog Molly. She changed the quilt on the bed for a lighter one, gave us advice as and when required and looked after our every need. Martyn's food was excellent, beautifully presented and exceptional quality. It was lovely to sit in the restaurant at breakfast and evening meal, relax and watch the tide go in and out.

Lovely “hidden gem” hotel very close to Bigbury on sea. On overnight stay for wedding and we were blown away by the wonderful views of Bentham Sand from our room, the dining room and sun terrace. Blessed with quirky furniture that may not be to some tastes, the hotel could be considered the perfect bolt hole, particularly if you are a surfing fan. Eggs at breakfast were cooked to perfection.

We have just returned from our second visit to the wonderful Henley Hotel. Our first was in swelteringly hot July 2022 and our second in wild and windy March 2023. The weather does not matter, what matters is the warm welcome and stunning location and comfortable rooms with spectacular views. The bedrooms, sitting and dining rooms look out over the beach and estuary and a short walk takes you onto the beach and over to Burgh Island when the tide is out. But none of that matters, we would stay in a dungeon if we were looked after by Petra and cooked for by Martyn, the only cook I would trust to cook fish apart from my husband. The food is 5* expertly cooked and beautifully presented. As we left we heard what was on the menu for that night and didn’t want to go home.

We cannot praise the Henley Hotel highly enough - from Petra and Martyn's warm, friendly welcome, to the beautiful views, from the comfortable surroundings, the log fire to sit by with a pre-dinner drink, and to top all this the most fabulous, five star breakfasts and evening meals, prepared by Martyn and served by the lovely Petra. If you want a relaxing, friendly stay in a great location then this is certainly the place for you. We have not stopped talking about it since we returned home. Perhaps I should not have written this glowing report as the Henley will probably have 'no vacancies' for any future visits.

Thankyou Martyn and Petra. So enjoyed our stay. Very homely, great hospitality and a serene atmosphere. The gourmet food surpassed all expectations. I will highly recommend you to my friends. Wendy The Henley hotel was in an amazing location. A short walk took you down to Bigbury beach and onto the famous Burgh island. I was blown away by the stunning setting from our rooms, that overlooked the estuary and Bantham Beach. Binoculars were in every room to assist in admiring the views. The house was beautifully furnished and very stylish. Petra could not have been more helpful and accommodating. She is the loveliest host I have ever had the joy of meeting! Nothing was too much trouble. My dog was warmly welcomed and had Casper for company. He was an adoring black Labrador with impeccable manners! The quality and presentation of Martyn’s food was outstanding and of high end restaurant standard. Always a local fish choice, together with amazing starters and desserts. Then there was breakfast! OMG…. Amazing choice. Imagine a hot steaming bowl of porridge with demerara sugar, cream and amaretto liquor! I had a different breakfast each day, was lush! Sue and Nessie

I stayed at the Henley Hotel for two nights whilst visiting friends staying near by. The hotel really exceeded my expectations. The hosts were really welcoming and attentive . The bedroom room had a great view, with seating and binoculars . Offered coffee and cake on arrival . The breakfast was lovely and also nice and hot . Other guests told me about the great dinners too . Lots of seating inside and out , to sit and admire the views or to look at the reading material provided . Free safe parking provided . I hope to return .

Quite exceptional, the thought that has gone into making guests comfortable and relaxed was outstanding. The hosts Martyn and petra were wonderful and made our break extra special. Beautiful location and scenery, The room was large and spacious and very well appointed, bathroom clean and had everything needed such as shelves and storage, as well as comfortable furnishings, a first class hotel.
