Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Dear David, Unfortunately the room was cold as you turned your radiator to zero on the dial, I have spoken to staff to ensure they are checking in the hotel rooms themselves (providing the guest allows them too), as they were confused at the time as the boiler was on and heating was working throughout the rest of our property. We don't provide fan heaters and I would be surprised if any hotel did in this day and age due to the potential fire risk. The hotel's heating is more than adequate and have received no complaints from the hotel's other guests who had not turned their radiators off. . We have had a fault with the cisterns in the bedrooms, which have been discontinued by the manufacturer. We are currently redoing the bathroom floors, and have completed both Crow Point and Saunton Rooms last week, and will be doing the Burrows and Croyde from tomorrow. Whilst the floors are being replaced we are also doing further works to the en-suites including addressing the issue with the cisterns. Kind Regards Christopher

The room was very scruffy, there was a hole in the ceiling that had been patched but not plastered so you could see the plasterboard and screws, the window shutters had slats missing so the light still filtered through, the room was cold and the bedding felt damp. The kettle lid didn't pop up so you had to negotiate putting the water in the spout. The bathroom was of a very good standard with a lovely rainfall shower and super hot water, it's a shame the room let it down.

Hello Dawn, I am sorry you were disappointed by your stay with us. There was an issue of a slipped slate which had caused an ingress of water in the very corner of the room. We swiftly had a tradesmen up to repair the roof itself. But felt it would be unsafe to leave the cracked plaster there as it may have fallen, therefore took the decision to remove the damaged plaster and temporarily board the affected area which is smaller than an A4 piece of paper. It was not possible to get someone to do a full repair before your stay. I am sorry that it affected the cosmetics of the room. But I think it is unfair to say the room is very scruffy, based on this and one missing slat, given that it has both been repainted and recarpeted this year. Unfortunately there is a 12 week lead time for new shutters and it would not be feasible to leave a room offline for 3 months for this reason. I am glad you think our bathroom was of good standard, and hopefully will be pleased to here that the room you stayed in along with 3 others are currently offline this week, while further improvements are done in the bathrooms. Kind Regards Christopher

The room was comfortable with a modern bathroom. The drainage from the shower wasn’t great so we ended up with a wet floor, but no great issue. The inn is on a main road so was not the quietest of locations but was close to all amenities. The highlight of the George Inn was definitely the food and the friendly staff. We had fabulous pizzas and TexMex food plus delicious breakfasts.

We only popped in for a drink and a game of pool. I noticed that everything was dirty , the chairs , floor and tables. The tables were sticky and the curved seat in the window was very dirty. I tried my hardest to keep my 3 year old from touching anything.

Very shocked at reading your review as the George Inn is thoroughly cleaned everyday and we wipe down tables as people leave. We are experiencing some issues with the varnish on the tables, and are trying to find a suitable time in which to sand these down and re-varnish. But to state everything is dirty is simply untrue.

.... to a heavy metal band when we arrived on a Friday evening and didn't stop until somewhere around midnight! An inauspicious start to our weekend stay !! Fortunately the rest of the weekend was a bit tamer. Genuine old style pub ambiance complete with 'sticky' carpets. Some renovations had been done and the first glance appearance of the rooms was pleasant. Some aspects, particularly the bathrooms were dated. Breakfast was not a standout moment ranging from 'quite ordinary' to 'avoid the smashed avo' which appeared to have been defrosted? Location was great in the centre of town and the staff pleasant & helpful.

Hello Richard, Although we do Live Music every Friday, we have not had any heavy metal bands at the George, as we stated in reply to your other reviews. I just don't want other potential guests to be misled by your comments. We typically have duos and trios and a lot of the acts are acoustic. We also don't have any carpets in our public areas and the carpets in the bedrooms are all new within the past 8 months, and are regularly shampooed. We are also located in a village and not a town. Thankfully also you will see from other reviews Breakfast is normally a stand out moment for most, everything is cooked fresh to order. Regards Christopher

Just had the best coleslaw (I’m a coleslaw snob so this says a lot)… and overall a really lovely meal here. The owner (well his Dad) was so lovely. Thoroughly recommend it! Three amazing burgers too! And I really like their floor tiles! Come visit people!

Hello Chantel, Thank you for taking the time and effort to write us such a lovely review. Really glad to hear that Dad looked after you during your visit. Full credit has to go to local Butchers Reeds for the delicious burgers. Glad you enjoyed the red slaw too, being in devon we use cider vinegar in ours. I'm also not a fan of green cabbage so ours is red onion, red cabbage and carrots bound in a vegan mayo. Hope to see you again. Kind Regards Christopher

A very relaxing stay at The George Inn, spacious rooms, great breakfasts, attentive and friendly staff and a great base for heading to different parts of the North Devon Coast! Parking included during our stay was the cherry on the cake! Big thank you to Chris, Amy, Paul and Roland for looking after us so well all week, we really appreciated it! The veggie breakfasts certainly helped set us up for our daily hiking trips! My partner and I will be back again soon, thank you so much! P.s. best of luck Chris with the pool tournament! I’ve lived in the village 10 years and always wanted to stop at the George but the staff and service have been fairly tragic. However I stopped in recently and a new staff member, ‘Caro’ kept us entertained all night. If this is the kind of people you now employ I will be visiting far more often.

A very friendly reception by the staff and a spotlessly clean accommodation with all the extra essentials provided. The location is perfect for walking to all the shops and amenities. Choice of the breakfast freshly cooked is second to none.
