We hadn't visited Gidleigh for nearly 10 years, but decided to treat ourselves to their two-night New Year's Eve package. It was great to see that neither the level of service nor the standard of accommodation had declined since our last visits and we felt immediately welcome and at home. Our room up on the top floor was spacious, well furnished, spotless and comfortable, making the most of the quirks of being in the eaves of the house. As before, the food was exceptional - excellent ingredients, combined with much technical skill, to produce some truly memorable dishes. The staff were attentive and efficient and able to join in the spirit of things on New Year's Eve itself. Attention to detail is everywhere and we will definitely be doing this again in future.

Having visited this hotel as a non resident many years before I had always wanted to return for a special occasion celebration. My 60th and the ongoing COVID pandemic made a weekend abroad impossible so time to explore the delights of venues closer to home. Booked a taste of Gidleigh and wasn’t disappointed looked for a nice room and booked Kitty which has terrific views from a cosy balcony. I love the combination of a country style traditional room with antiques and luxury fabric and linen combined with ultra modern luxury bathrooms and generous supplies of luxury toiletries. Complimentary Madeira, chocolates and biscuits were awaiting us and we were feeling relaxed after a delicious cream tea and a stroll in the enchanted garden that surrounds this hotel. Chris Eden is the new chef and is clearly on a mission to return Gidleigh to Michelin Star status. It is deserved overall quality of food and attentive service made dinner a memorable experience and the vi-sprung beds with high quality bedding along with the steady tingling noise of the riverTeign running through the grounds across moss strewn boulders guarantees a restful sleep. Tea trays and newspaper in the morning before an excellent full English breakfast. We were truly sad to leave and although the experience is a little eye watering on the wallet you really do get an experience to remember.

We stayed at the hotel on the “ wine lovers “ 2 night stay . This included a 7/8 course tasting menu with matched wines on one night and an A La Carte dinner on the second .
The hotel room was fantastic , a big bedroom overlooking the grounds at the front , a big sitting area and plenty of room . The only slight fault for me was that the bathroom wasn’t the standard of the rest of the room . Shower over the bath with a plastic shower curtain , wasn’t 5* . That’s about all I can fault !!
The food on both occasions was divine , from the flames mackerel start to the taster menu , through a prawn , quail and beef dish , the tastes were amazing , the four of us dining couldn’t find a fault with any of it . The aged Gouda cheese that had been aerated was so different , but wasn’t heavy and was something none of us had seen before . The deserts were beautiful but not filling , it’s difficult to put in words how good the food was. The A La Carte menu was a little limited perhaps , but we all had the Calamari starter , and the Turbot as a main . The calamari dish was as good as any I’ve had anywhere , as good as the one I had in a 3* restaurant recently . The Turbot was cooked perfectly and the flavours were stunning .
Finally the service throughout was of the highest standard , very professional but friendly , both the restaurant and hotel staff . We had a tour of the wine cellar with a wine tasting , the gentleman who showed us around was brilliant , knowledgeable with a good sense of humour . The serving staff were also excellent
It’s not cheap to do the package, but with the rooms and the food it’s great value , although I did think that the A La Carte menu cost was extremely expensive if you were having that only
Breakfast was also delicious , cooked freshly with the usual buffet essentials . The haddock I had for breakfast was cooked as perfectly as the fish on the main course in the night .

Dear mog120, Thank you very much for such lovely review. I hope you have managed to recover from the walk on Saturday. Alex, who did your wine tasting, is one of the many stars here. He is very charming and as you say he has a great sense of humour. Thank you also for noticing breakfast. A very important meal and our last chance to impress our guests. I am glad we managed to do that. I hope to be able to welcome you back to Gidleigh very soon. Best wishes Simon

After the long months of lockdown, I wondered how it would be returning to Gidleigh. Would Covid-19 have placed a damper on the warmth of the hospitality, would the experience seem strange and strained? Not at all, I’m glad to say, it was perfect from start to finish. Gidleigh, with its plentiful large rooms and vast grounds is probably as well suited to pandemic hospitality as it’s possible to be. The changes were subtle - tea placed on a tray table outside the room whilst the server stood back for you to carry it in, less furniture in the public rooms, cutlery ready set on tables, the option to pour ones own wine and water. None intruded, the service was as warm, human, individual and thoughtful as ever. Many of the staff commented how gals they were to be back - one lad had taken to waiting on his parents silver service during lockdown, which I thought conveyed a passion for his role!
Gidleigh has been through a run of chefs recently, it was the first time I’d eaten there in Chris Eden’s tenure. The food was incredible, a level above, I thought, even that of my last stay. From the homemade biscuits to the amuse bouches, the bread, the breakfast, the Cornish lobster... and the chocolarder gorse brownie was to die for.
It was great to end the isolation of lockdown, and wonderful to do it in the company of the great Gidleigh team. If you’re looking for an escape, there’s no place better!

We stayed for 2 nights with covid restrictions which we had been prepared for. Masks required on entry and the rule was "masks when standing, no masks when sitting." Other guests were compliant but it did feel a bit like a sanatorium! Our room, Drogo, was large and generally well appointed but the sofa was very saggy and we don't like showers over baths especially when the bath is so narrow and there are no grab rails. We are both nearly 80. Dinner was very good but service flagged a little as the dining room became busier and we waited 50 minutes for dessert on our first night, didn't bother with one on the second night. Service generally was attentive. We were very put off by the access road to this hotel. It is via a narrow lane some 2 miles long, poor surface in parts, limited clear passing places and sharp bends and can alternate from bright sun light to deep shadow from overhanging trees and high hedges making visibility difficult.

We love Gidleigh, this being our fifth visit. The hospitality, food and location are all superb. Simon and the team looked after everyone superbly. There were of course some slight differences: temperature checks on arrival, no handshakes and a screen at reception. Otherwise it was just as good, if not better, than previously. The team were all in very good humour, obviously very happy to be back welcoming guests. The location is simply stunning and within minutes you feel completely relaxed and at ease. We opted for Huccaby room again, it has stunning views and a lovely open plan bathroom area. Chris's food is lovely. Only a la carte option at the moment but still plenty of opportunity to experience his style of cooking. Mackerel starter was sublime as was the wild sea bass main course. Deserts were divine. Only comment is that it would have been nice to have had a different menu on the second night. At Gidleigh you truly feel like you are guest in someones country house and are made to feel very much at home. Thank you Simon and the team for making our stay so enjoyable. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

After being so disappointed at not being able to go abroad due to Covid, this hotel certainly cheered me up no end. It is utterly beautiful.
Situated in the stunning grounds of Gidleigh , which you are welcome to roam, the views are spectacular, the ambience peaceful, the Hotel itself, utterly charming.
The staff were extremely helpful, friendly and polite and go out of their way to make your stay as relaxed as possible.
The room, although not the largest, being in the eaves, was spotlessly clean and extremely comfortable. Lovely bed and linen which are important to me, and a very large, clean, and tastefully decorated bathroom with an enormous shower- I loved it.
The food. What can I say? Exquisite. We had dinner the first night and I have to say it was probably the best dining experience I have had. Delicious food, beautifully prepared and cooked but not so rich that you end up feeling uncomfortable. Really, any subsequent meals that we had outside the hotel were utterly ruined in comparison. I really do encourage you to dine at the hotel at least once if you can- it isn't cheap but worth every penny and actually good value . Equally, the breakfast was lovely with lots to choose from, all served at the table. Again, all beautifully cooked- the eggs Benedict was just the best.
We had a wonderful stay and enjoyed the relaxing and comfortable vibe that the hotel offers.
Just one word of advice. The country lanes leading up to the hotel ,and which can not be avoided, are not for the faint hearted. Take them slow is my best advice.

We have visited Gidleigh a number of times over the years and it’s always a special treat. It’s a wonderful setting and we were treated to wonderful weather. The rooms are always spotless, but it is probably time to add back in the items removed when we were learning to live with Covid. The science has provided that it’s impossible to catch Covid from soft furnishings, books, magazines and the like. Thus the lack of reading material could be reviewed. Food as ever was excellent and for once it was quite nice not to have a buffet style breakfast! Not quite 5 star on this visit, a few minor service quibbles, but don’t let that put you off a visit.

Oh my goodness ! Gidleigh Park has been on my to do list since forever and it surpassed every expectation. From our dog friendly room to the restaurant, the staff, the management ,even the lovely gardener. Nothing too much trouble and every single person delighted to be working at Gidleigh Park. The weather was so against us but umbrellas, waterproofs and wellies were provided. We did come prepared though and braved the wind and rain to enjoy the splendid grounds. It must be fabulous in the better weather with the woods and the stream and of course the manicured lawns. The food was perfect for us too. An interesting dinner menu served with such attention to detail. Breakfast included the best kippers ever and certainly worth a recommendation .I’d also go for the smoked haddock served with a perfect poached egg. Multicoloured croissants were added for a bit of fun too.

Hi, I assume that this message is intended for the hotel and nothing to do with me. I was a guest there. I do not know anything about their dog policy. We didn't take our dog with us. However, when we go places with our dog we usually check ourselves on dog policies, including access to rooms, bars, cafes and restaurants, we would never assume access to bars etc., even when our dog is allowed in our room. I would say it's the owners responsibility to check but that's just my view.
