Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Happy friendly staff, warm comfortable accommodation. Great food, tasty drinks, great value. Super lovely little large village with some proper quirky shops. Dartmoor just over there, outside the window. Go on! Book a weekend away, you won't regret it!

Just returned from a two night stay at The Three Crowns Hotel and it was great - comfy, clean rooms and excellent staff. Food was also really good - lovely breakfast choices and quality lunch/evening meals. A great base for walking - hotel has a leaflet with a selection of circular walks and the staff were also knowledgable and gave great suggestions. Would definitely recommend and will most likely be back!

While we usually wait to pen reviews after checking out, once in awhile a place merits accolades in advance. So it is with our Three Crowns experience. Following a bumpy flight over and 4-ish hour drive, we were delighted - and admittedly relieved - to receive the warmest (it was cold and snowing) and friendliest welcome from Scott. He is one of those fellows who anticipates just about every question and exudes true panache. He and his team showed an esprit and total guest-first focus as strong as any. Our room (21) was comfortable and a bit quirky (literally at the "end of the line" for hot water... Scott and I shall always have a healthy differ on the word "scalding"...and a showerhead with its own personality). Nonetheless TC is the embodiment of hospitality, augmented by a lively pub side and adjacent fine dining. Plus dogs are welcome and we mingled with a veritable kennel of Devon's happiest canine corps. While we were advised to call TC's locale, Chagford, a town (not a village) the latter definitely applies to the fairytale terrain. Plan enough ahead and ask Scott for Table 1 - you will find yourself in the coziest corner, literally, for dining by the substantial wood-burning fireplace. Three Crowns will always have a special place in our Memories Album. Thanks to All. A+++

We had 1 night here on dinner, bed and breakfast deal. Welcome was warm and room good. Plenty of space and a large and very comfortable bed. Food was lovely and service generally good. However, our stay was spoiled by no hot water on Saturday morning. Cold showers really are not great! The water had been slow to heat the night before, but we assumed that our room was at the end of the system so didn't say anything. When we mentioned this at check out there was no empathy, just an explanation that nobody knew the boiler wasn't on. We all know that things can go wrong, but it felt as though there was no attempt to put anything right, just an insincere apology. Disappointed in the response. We are likely to stay in the area again, but it won't be here.

Response from Steve Bellman, Owner at Three Crowns Chagford
Responded 28 Sept 2023
Dear katen647 Thanks for taking the time to review us and firstly it is great to read that you were welcomed warmly, liked the room, received good service and had lovely food - amazing. We are very sorry that there was a problem with the hot water the following morning - when the contractor arrived it was a faulty pump and not a boiler issue at all - there was plenty of hot water it just wasn't circulating around the buildings. Unfortunately that is not something any of our team would be aware of until guests started to tell us and it wasn't an issue that our team could put right as it required an engineer to carry out a repair. You have been kind enough to acknowledge that sometimes things go wrong so we are sad that you won't be returning even though everything else was to your liking. With regards The Three Crowns team

I booked here for two nights for my husbands birthday. It started well with a reserved parking space! The welcome was ok except for the receptionist who was quite abrupt and told us that we should have phoned and booked a table for dinner. It maybe better if they called you to book the table when the package is dinner, bed and breakfast! The food was lovely and so was the room. We did have an issue with the hot water one morning which there was no apology for. We got an explanation about it but no apology.

Our second overnight stay (the first was in 2021) and this time we travelled with Cecil the greyhound. We booked a dog-friendly superior courtyard room which was very spacious with a super comfortable and large bed. The bathroom was clean with fluffy towels and decent shower jet. We booked the dinner, bed and breakfast package and, as previously, enjoyed our meals-the food here is delicious and good value. All the staff we encountered were friendly and professional; there's such a great atmosphere and it is not at all "stuffy". We liked it so much and will be booking again for our annual trip west in 2024.

We stayed a night at the Three Crowns when walking the Two Moors Way. Probably the best food of the trip. Service very good. Lovely welcome with iced water being offered to two exhausted walkers. Downside was being allocated room 1. It's adjacent to the outside food/drink courtyard with tables incredibly close to the room. You can hear every word. If you want an early night (and privacy) avoid room 1 and any courtyard rooms. We changed to room 11 which was ok (view is of a roof/skylight). Would have been four stars had we not had the problem.
