We stayed two nights at Bovey Castle with our two adult sons and we all had an amazing experience : beautifully decorated and warm bedrooms, very comfortable beds, considerate and helpful staff and delicious food ,both at breakfast and in their brasserie with a wide choice for all diets. The swimming pool is a real treat after long walks on the moor. A stunning place and definitively a place to come back to

This gorgeous castle tucked away in the wilderness was a perfect location for our honeymoon. We were greeted with a complimentary bottle of champagne for our special occasion and the room was very clean with amazing greenery views.
We decided to treat ourselves to a couple of drinks at the bar and to the breakfast one of the mornings, which we thought wouldn’t amount to too much. Although a surprise was presented on departure for a lovely bill of £260, where a vodka tonic was £15 with a service charge of £4!! Each time a drink was given to us a lovely £3-5 service charge was included for them to bring over a drink. The rather small breakfast was a lavish £25 each for a bit of toast and eggs!! Felt rinsed.
This place is stupidly overpriced for food/drinks. If you’re not dripping in cash avoid the extras and bring your own drinks/food.

We stayed for the day and had a spa treatment, swim and then lunch.
I was surprised this was rated a five star hotel as some areas we visited were quite shabby.
The swimming pool area was dark and the pool water was heavily chlorinated, so much so when the water accidents went in my mouth and eyes they both stung for some time. The large panoramic windows in the swimming pool area could be such an asset overlooking the lovely view but they were dirty spoiling the effect. The dressing area was okay with good shower facilities and free lockers but this was tempered with the view of two enormous overflowing baskets of dirty dressing downs and towels. Overall I would rate the swimming area as three star.
The spa treatment was lovely and the room was spacious but held four people for treatments. I was lucky that I was the only person having treatment otherwise it would have been noisy and crowded.
The young lady providing my pedicure had to carry a heavy copper bowl for a foot wash from the sink across the room to where my pedicure chair was. Health and safety issues are clearly not taken into consideration for staff. In the toilet area the light switch had ingrained dirt in the mechanism which wasn’t a good look and the floor tiles appeared well used and dirty. The staff were polite and very attentive. Overall though the treatment was good but the surroundings were not five star, I would think four star for service and three star for the surroundings due to the toilet area and the multiple use room which offers no privacy.
The lunch in the Brasserie was lovely and plenty too.
The price of drinks was very high, £3.80 for 250ml Diet Coke. Staff were polite and helpful. The area was very good to sit and have lunch but I would have thought four star not five star. There was nothing outstanding to make it five star in my view.
We enjoyed our day but our expectations of five star surroundings was not met.

Bovey Castle is in a stunning location, the views are beautiful from the hotel & access to Dartmoor National Park is very simple & convenient. We are a pragmatic couple & understand the limitations imposed on hotels due to Covid HOWEVER Bovey Castle is not a 5* hotel. Other reviews list the numerous reasons why & we would totally agree. The main issues for us were expectations were not set prior to arrival even though we had spoken to them on the phone a number of times. It’s the 1st experience ever (in 45 years)we have had to go out & buy washing up liquid & cleaning products because the room was not serviced at all for 3 days! Which we think is unacceptable for the prices paid. Also buy nuts or nibbles to have with pre dinner drinks as they would not provide these either. Cleaning products were not provided & when we requested our staff on to be serviced we were told No it’s only done every 3/4 days. Front of house staff are more than unhelpful & would benefit from training in Customer Service after all they need visitors. A number of the staff were exceedingly helpful but put together as a very expensive package for 5 days it really was not value for money. We are very happy to pay for good service when we receive it. Looking forward to the spa treatment again we were very disappointed at the quality of treatment was not good. I have a massage at home regularly so had been looking forward to being pampered - we weren’t. Be mindful when checking your bill on departure as a 12.5% service charge is added to everything plus a daily (voluntarily) service charge for staff. As we did everything, made the bed, cleaned the bathroom we requested it was taken off. To try & end on a positive note the food was very good & so were the breakfast & evening staff. We used a local taxi service the hotel had recommended. The company is one person & although very pleasant, the service is totally unreliable. Be prepared to wait 30 mins to 1 hr 10mins for collection. Each trip (3 returns in total) not one went smoothly.

Dear Hankin921, Thank you for your review. It was good to hear you enjoyed some aspects of your stay, namely the fabulous location and the food and service of all your meals in the brassiere. Clearly your disappointment is focused on the frequency of the cleaning, after 3 nights and you felt this was not clear to you before arrival. We do have this information on our website, plus in the correspondence regarding your booking; it is very unfortunate that you have not seen this prior to arrival. We have reviewed the position of this information within all our written documents as some guests have subsequently acknowledged it was included, but lost in the list of points. Please be assured we are not trying to hide this information in any way and managing expectations is very important and I am very sorry we have failed to meet yours during your stay.

We stayed here for our anniversary and really enjoyed the ambience of the whole place. The staff are super friendly and nothing is too much. We went on the on site clay shooting experience which was great and is run by a gentleman named Mark who puts you at total ease and so it makes for an enjoyable time, definitely would recommend this activity. The public rooms here are beautiful with open fires and places to go and just sit, relax and do nothing or read a book. Food in Smiths brassiere we found to be of good quality and extremely tasty. We stayed in room 35 which is a large suite with an amazing bathroom the shower of which I would like at home very much. Rooms aren’t being serviced currently unless you stay for four days or longer but we didn’t find that to be too much of a problem, making a bed and washing up a tea cup I’m sure shouldn’t be too much for anyone under the COVID era. We enjoyed the peace, tranquility and the beauty of the place and would return but probably in the summer to get the full benefit of the grounds. One piece of advice to management is stop ripping people off for cheese and biscuits at lunchtime charging £24.50 for something that should be half that price.

This place has it all, fantastic grounds, grand rooms, spa, gym, fantastic friendly staff, tennis courts, pool, sauna, steam room, 2 x restaurants, family lodges, play area for kids & an 18 hole golf course.
Nothing is to much for the staff here they will accommodate you in every way they can 1st class.
In the rooms you will find ample shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, body lotion cream, vanity set, sewing kit, shoe shine, nail file, shower cap, slippers, dressing gown, tea & coffee facilities, complementary fizzy & still water, 2 x apples, a jar of peanuts, and a small bottle of sloe gin made on the premises.
We added on 2 x activity’s this year the 1st being slow gin & cider making this was taking by the nice man John, explains and showing from start to finish on making both these drinks in a very old fashion long barn hut it was really good experience, and of course you try the finished products after. Activity no2 we tried out was the air riffle shooting this was carried out by a very bubbly lady called Laura it was such a fun activity to do, Laura was an amazing, very funny and charming young lady, both activity last about 1 hour and depending on the season the price will vary. You can also come here and have dinner or afternoon tea

We stayed for a week at Bovey Castle. I’ll start with the positives - the setting is breathtaking, staff lovely and there are some great activities to do whilst there - including the fantastic but very tricky golf course. The hotel has huge potential with its setting, location and buildings but sadly it’s falling way short of being a 5* hotel.

We stayed in a lodge (self catering) and having recently returned from a Carbis Bay lodge, had high expectations. Firstly the decor is tired, not appealing and very 80s. Beds are very comfortable but sofas are the most uncomfortable I’ve ever sat on in my life. Curtains pretty foul, rugs grim and paintwork has been touched up badly throughout, mis matching lights in the bathroom etc (all feels very cheap and slapdash), and general feel of a 4* at best accommodation. If you ring reception they frequently don’t answer. In room cleaning is only every 3 days (there are no Covid restrictions and we could easily be out of the lodge!) and no turn down option (this definitely isn’t 5*). Breakfast bakery baskets are exorbitant - £22 plus £5 tray service for a few bought in very average pastries. One day they didn’t even turn up. The service at every level is friendly but incredibly slow. Basically you breathe here and they charge you. Newspapers offered but you have to pay extra. Really? 5*?
The terrace is a wonderful place to sit and have sandwiches and a cream tea. Again staff lovely but service horrifically slow. Brasserie food really good and setting nice if rather brightly lit at night, but again, service slow. Fine dining restaurant shut. No idea why. Bar service slow. Pool area nice, but was shut down at the end of our stay, no explanation as to why.
Clay pigeon shooting instructor was fantastic and we had a great time and fawn feeding whilst expensive, was lovely.
Did we have a good time? Yes. Would we go again? No. Not unless they significantly revamped the lodges, upped the service and turned it into the 5* hotel we expected. I imagine though that post Covid, times are hard financially and it feels like a significant investment would be required….
We had a lovely family holiday though and I would really emphasise how hard the staff were trying. The problems are bigger unfortunately.

As group of three couples with had a one night stay in a lodge, celebrating Burns Night. The lodge was well presented, however it did have some flaws. The heating was so hot and we found no way of controlling it, unbearable at night. One of our party had a steaming hot bath prior to going for dinner, the next had a luke warm bath, the following four of us suffered cold showers. We contacted reception, a lad came straight down and looked but said the hot water storage is probably not sufficient for six people. Dam right it’s not!! Very disappointing, we can’t be the only people to experience this. The hotel sent a car down to fetch us and drive us up to the hotel, handy as it was raining, a very polite driver. We had an excellent evening celebrating the life and poetry of Robert Burns. The food was good and wine value for money. Only one complaint during the meal, a member of the waiting staff lent across my plate as I was still eating, I mean inches over the top of my food, to get a wine bottle.
This morning we all went for breakfast, a good selection, unfortunately the must have forgotten our order, I asked several times when would we expect it, after a 45 minute wait it arrived. Worth the wait the food was excellent.
The facilities and grounds are fantastic, such a stunning setting. On checking out the receptionist removed the service charge as compensation for the lack of hot water, a welcome gesture, but in all honesty we’d rather had hot water!!
We enjoyed it enough to probably return in the summer, but will stay in the main hotel.

Pros - Bovey castle is a luxury golf/spa hotel in the heart of Devon the location is perfect for site seeing. The hotel itself and grounds are simply stunning it would make a fantastic wedding / event venue. The views from the two terraces and suites are great. Bovey is 100x better than Gidleigh Park because I have been to both. The swimming pool and spa are amazing and the water was warm and pleasant. Sadly the western restaurant remained closed but we ate in the Brasserie and the food was very tasty. I do think £50 plus the service charge is too pricey just for eating breakfast. Check out Beaky the parrot he likes to whistle back and will repeat your whistles very cute! Plenty of activities to do here check out the board in the photos.
Cons:- no air con in the rooms we were literally boiling on the first night (husband had virtually no sleep) we ended up sleeping with the windows open for the remaining nights. Please note there is a discretionary service charge on everything, the first time I have come across this in a U.K. hotel. The parking area was unmanned which meant you had to move big orange cones around yourself to get your car parked or moved. The british staff working on reception are young and can come across as a bit stand offish rather than helpful and friendly. Room was not cleaned for our three night stay so we started to run out of things. No complimentary biscuits or other 5 star accessories you would expect for £300 a night. The complimentary milk on our room was off when we arrived.

We travelled to Bovey with our little dachshund, pleased to find a really good hotel who accept dogs. We were not disappointed - this is truly 5* and deserving of every one of these stars. From check in to check out two days later, everything was perfect. The staff are helpful, polite, interested in all aspects of our stay, the rooms both public and our room are sumptuous, warm and beautifully furnished. The Spa is excellent, I enjoyed a treatment there on the first afternoon and the pool area is relaxing, beautifully done and spotlessly clean. For an older building we expected some areas to be less than perfect but this simply is not the case. We did not dine in the Bistro but the smells and look of it suggest we will certainly dine here in the future. Instead we ate in the main dining room and were not disappointed. In fact the Chocolate and Passionfruit dessert ranks as one of the best we have ever eaten. The venison was wonderful and the filet steaks also perfect. A drink in the beautiful bar area by the roaring fire - of which there are many in this lovely castle - is a must. All in all, this was a wonderful two day stay which will remain in our memory tempting us to return sooner rather than later! Special mention to Natalie who was incredibly helpful before and after our arrival.

Best to ring the hotel for exact details but am sure the answer is yes as their range was so good. That said they do have cider making and gin courses and you get to taste their own cider and help make it! Was a really excellent part of the stay. You do pay extra, there needs to be at least two of you but the ideas were so good that we are making our own lemon gin - just waiting for it to mature!

We stayed in a lodge with 4 adults and 1 child and having a full kitchen was a plus its a very short walk To the hotel and did not feel isolated from the activities The public rooms in the hotel are just beautiful and enjoyed by all and the lodge gives the children and dog easier acess to the grounds as well Just remember to book your dinner reservations and spa appointments prior to your arrival and try the ring of bells pub in nearby north Bovey a lovely walk too Dont miss the falcon demonstration Have a wonderful stay
