Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

As soon as you turn into the driveway and head up toward the impressive house, you feel like you’re entering an adult fantasy land of English quaintness. Call me Mr Darcy! We were welcomed by Eleonore and Marlyn and a plate full of freshly baked Devon scones. The cottage was spacious, beautifully decorated and squeaky clean. The grounds and manicured gardens, including long water, pavilion and 1000’s of glorious flowers of all types and colours, allow you to find your own special private space to enjoy a picnic or watch the sun go down with aperitif in hand. Perfectly situated to explore the Moors, Culverhayes is luxury at it’s best.

Three of us stayed at Spice and enjoyed every moment from a the warm welcome by the owner to our sad farewell, sorry to be leaving such a wonderful place! The cottage is beautiful, attention to detail being perfect - comfortable bed, high quality linen, fluffy towels, efficient heating, log burner with endless supply of logs, loads of hot water and a wonderful kitchen - well equipped and planned! And SO peaceful. Highly recommended!

We stayed in ‘Hopetown’ over Christmas with our son and family. The Cottage was stunning: spacious, well equipped, comfortable and exceptionally tastefully decorated. Top end of the market with great attention to detail. The Cottage was even decorated for Christmas .... again, just right - it was a real warm welcome - if only I realised that it would be decorated, I need not have brought the tree, lights and box of decorations. They provided the complete package. The Cottage was dog friendly, the grounds were lovely with many of the trees lit up at night. Could not fault the place. There was a plentiful supply of wood for the wood burner and the ‘owners’ were friendly and helpful.

We loved our stay at Spice Cottage. The cottage was clean and comfortable and had everything we could wish for. It was a real treat to stay in such beautiful surroundings, the gardens were simply stunning, with a choice of our own private space and the gardens of the main house. Marlyn and Eleanor were so welcoming. Thank you both for a wonderful stay. Ps - thanks for the apples - we're still enjoying them!!

My partner and I stayed at Spice cottage, (marketed as Butterkiss Cottage, not sure why though) from 18th to 25th November 2017. After a long drive from Kent, we arrive to a very welcome sight of a burning log fire which meant the cottage was nicely warm. This cottage is of a very high standard and very spacious and well equipped. The owners were very welcoming but did not invade our space unless we needed anything, in which case we only had to ask. The cottage is dog friendly, but not being a dog lover, there was no trace of any dogs previously being present. Loved staying there and if it is available will definitely book it again. Thank you Eleanor and Marlyn.

Upon arrival you are greeted with a view like a mini stately home. It's a grand house in extensive stunning gardens that you are free to explore and there is so much space that our dog loved. The cottages are adjacent to the house with parking. We stayed in Spice which was charming with a double height living area and well stocked kitchen. The cottage was immaculate and the attention to detail included super soft white fluffy towels just like a top 5 star hotel. It's a short walk to the New Inn that serves great food and a ramble around the quaint and quiet village is worthwhile including the very historic church. Being in central Devon Evans you can go exploring in every direction. Highly recommended for those seeking tranquil and beautiful surroundings and looking for a central base in Devon.

Possibly the best self catering accommodation we've ever had. Welcomed by a lovely fire and a basket full of goodies. A great location for exploring the northern side of Dartmoor and within a drive of Exmoor. Everything was what we wanted; spacious, well equipped and comfortable. Perfect!

We have just returned from four lovely days staying at Hopetown Cottage. We loved Eleanor's warm and generous hospitality. The cottage is exceptionally comfortable, spacious and well-appointed, a real home away from home. The gardens are exquisite and our two dogs had a wonderful time playing in the paddock. We would give Culverhayes six stars if we could.

After finishing a contract we wanted a quiet break away. The edge of Dartmoor in November may not be everyone's cup of tea but a stay at Spice Cottage gave us a great base for wandering the moors. Our first impressions were extremely favourable with a great welcome and a lit fire. The cottage is well equipped and we wanted for nothing. Everything was included unlike other cottages; we even had a supply of kindling and wood for the fire at hand. First rate - we would highly recommend.
