Welcome to Bearslake Inn, We are a traditional thatched pub serving great, locally sourced food and offering quality accommodation in the stunning Dartmoor National Park. Situated in the hamlet of Lake in the picturesque North West corner of Dartmoor our chef’s specialise in local produce and lucky for us the West Country is blessed with wonderful supplies of meat, fish, vegetables as well as a host of small artisan producers of cheese, ice cream and smoked products. Where and whenever possible we always try to source these direct from the farmer, fisherman or grower. Our shopping criteria is simple; best quality and locally produced. Located between the small market towns of Tavistock and Okehampton on the A386, Bearslake Inn is an ideal base from which to explore the delights of the local Moors and Tor’s of the Nation Park. We have six spacious en-suite letting rooms (three of which are dog friendly) and plenty of parking. Just two miles south of the A30 and the border between Devon and Cornwall, it is easy to reach and yet is set amidst the glorious remote walking country. The magnificent Sourton Tor, Corn Ridge and Great Links Tor are all just a walk away with the Granite Way cycle path running directly behind the pub. Owners, Julian and Lisa have lived in the area for 10 years and took over the Bearslake Inn in March 2018. They are delighted to have the opportunity to build on Bearslake Inn’s reputation and they both look forward to welcoming you to their charming pub.

Stayed when travelling from Cornwall to London.

It was amazing. Arrived to a warm and friendly welcome and taken to our room (via one way route for Covid-19 distancing). We stayed in the hayloft which is a huge room with a sofa looking into the garden and brook up under the thatch.

Amazing hot powerful shower with giant bath sheet towels very much appreciated after a week in and out of the sea and rain.

We had dinner and a breakfast hamper as part of our stay. The food was delicious for both along with a wide range of gin for G&T and their own labelled wine.

Staff were all friendly and helpful, very thorough contact and updated for safety for Covid-19

Would definitely stay again, perhaps to walk on nearby Dartmoor

As part of our 5 day cycle tour from Barnstaple to Plymouth we stayed one night at the Bearslake Inn. Our room was in the oldest part of the building with lovely beams, lots of character and was very spacious, with a lovely big bed. Our cycles were securely stored overnight and our hosts provided a warm welcome.
The food in the evening was delightful with locally sourced items on the menu. Definitely worth a visit.

Enjoyed a lovely overnight stay at the Bearslake Inn, on a Dine, Stay, Relax package. We had the Cider Press room which, with the windows open, provided a cooling through breeze as was such a hot weekend. The food was amazing. It was our wedding anniversary and the Chef did a lovely "congratulations" plate of fruit compotes accompanied with ice creams. The pub also gave us a complimentary box of chocolate and an Anniversary card. The hamper we had for breakfast was a bit "different" but really nice. The staff were very friendly and attentive and nothing was too much trouble. We will definitely return at a future date.

We had the triple room in the main building. The stairs are pretty steep so avoid if you have anyone with significant mobility issues.

The building itself is pretty and could be really lovely but it feels like it needs a little bit of TLC. There’s a tiredness to it that is hard to quantify. It could do with a proper spring clean and a coat of paint if nothing else. Some of the seating is a little hard and could do with an upgrade.

We were only staying one night for a stopover but I wouldn’t have coped with the bathroom beyond one night. The building is quirky and old so I get the limitations it brings. As a 6ft man, having a shower (which is in a bath) was nigh on impossible. Not a complaint, just a fact.

Our evening meal was pretty good, no complaints there. Nothing special but ok. The service was nice but occasionally we had to call back the young waiter as he only took the drinks order from three of our group of five. He was doing his best so I’ll park that one.

The beds were really comfortable and we all slept really well. No issues there.

The lack of a cooked breakfast or even a decent sit down continental breakfast with hot drinks was a real letdown in my view. I just don’t understand why they wouldn’t offer this from a business perspective. That fact alone would put me off staying again. Like all families, we wake at different times so it would’ve been nice to access a decent ‘proper’ coffee whilst I was waiting for the rest of my group.

I thought it was generally quite expensive for what we got but the cost of everything was freely available on the internet so fair enough.

Would we stay again? Probably not. It just lacked atmosphere and we felt just small things could improve the customer experience.

I wish the owners all the best but it wasn’t for us.

Responded 8 Aug 2022
Dear Darren W, We are pleased that you found Bearslake Inn to be pretty although a little surprised that you felt "there was a tiredness to it that is hard to quantify" and that "it needed some TLC" as we took the opportunity to completely re-decorate throughout during the forced Covid closure(s)! Also every year in the quieter winter months we also shut completely for 2 weeks to catch up on essential maintenance. Being a 13th Century Grade II listed Thatched building which is a converted farmhouse with low ceilings, walls and floors that are not perfectly straight all adds to the character of the building and something that most guests staying with us appreciate as different to the usual sterile corporate hotels. We are sorry that being a 6ft man you found the bathroom with the shower over the bath a bit challenging. Most hotels will install a shower over the bath where space in the bathroom is at a premium and there is no room for a separate bath and shower as it gives flexibility to those guests wanting either a bath or a shower. There are many pictures on our website of various areas of the pub including the letting rooms although if height was an issue for you if you had called us before completing your booking we would have talked through with you the limitations. We are surprised that you didn't find anything special about our food, which appears to be contrary to the very many positive reviews we have received on this site about our food, as we have many repeat guests who will travel a distance to come and dine with us. Regarding your drinks the reason the young waiter only took the drinks for three out of the five in your party was because only three out of the five had arrived at that time and you were waiting for the other two. The waiter could also have not taken any drinks order until all of your party was present but he felt those of your party who were present may have liked a drink rather than be kept waiting on the other two yet to arrive. We are pleased you found the beds really comfortable and all slept really well as we do also get lots of positive guest comments about the comfort of the beds. Our Hamper style breakfast is something that we clearly advertise on our website (and other booking channels) so if you would have preferred a cooked breakfast then we are surprised you booked to stay with us. There are many other pubs in the area who also take "walk-ins" for a cooked breakfast so if you had mentioned this to us when you checked in and filled in your hamper breakfast form we could have advised you on this. The hamper style breakfast we have been doing for a number of years now as feedback we have received is that some guests would prefer to have breakfast in their room at their leisure rather than having to come down for breakfast. Our hamper breakfast does have hot drinks in the form of a caffettiere with locally ground fresh coffee beans or a pot of local tea, both of which can be made using your kettle from your hospitality tray in your room. So your comment on a "decent proper coffee" we find strange as that was available to you should you have wanted it! We are sorry to hear that Bearslake is not for you although thanks for giving us a try! Lisa, Julian and Poppy (our pub dog) and the Bearslake team.

Fantastic find, beautiful thatched roof, very friendly staff, professional and very well organised. Felt very COVID safe. Had the cod Goujons on ciabatta with french fries, really generous portion size and well cooked. Lovely gardens too. Will definitely return when next in the area.

Visitied today on our way back from holiday in the West Country. Out usual stop off point, Jamaica Inn on Bodmin Moor wasn't accessible due to roadworks so my wife got busy with Trip Advisor to look for an alternative. What a treat she found with this Inn. 5 minutes off of the A30 and full of 13th century charm. The food was superb, I'm a bit of a traditionalist and opted for the battered haddock and chips while my wife had Cornish Sausages (presumably smuggled over the border) and Mustard mash. Both dishes were excellent. What made it for us was that we were allowed to bring our small dog into part of the restaurants. Dogs are allowed into the bar area and the older parts of the restaurant, but these are full of character and charm so so it was no hardship at all. Can't comment on how well they keep their ales as I was designated driver, but it looked all spick and span. Knowledgeable staff who were obviously proud of their restaurant and building. Avoid the A30 service areas and come here instead!

We stayed here on Friday on a TravelZoo “Dine & Stay” deal and had a fabulous time.

We were in The Saddle Room and from the moment we stepped through the door our 3 dogs and us were made extremely welcome.

The room was huge and pristine with everything we needed, plus blankets, treats, poo bags and bowls for the girls. The beams provided a bit of an obstacle course as we’re both tall but it just added to the charm.

Our food was spectacular, one of the best meals we’ve both enjoyed in a very long time, with service to match. The deal gave us a certain amount per course which we did exceed but it was worth every penny. We were in a smaller room rather than the main dining room, as we had the dogs, but it was really cosy with the warmth from the log burner and extremely chilled.

We both slept well in a very comfy bed with full bellies replete from our exertions on the breathtaking moors. There was plenty of hot water for the superb power shower, too.

In the morning, the bespoke continental breakfast hamper, pre-ordered the night before, was very tasty with more than enough for both of us.

We’ve passed here many times on our way to and from Dartmoor and Tavistock and wish we’d ventured in sooner, if only to have sampled the food or enjoyed a drink by the stream in the large beer garden.

Just a couple of points for feedback.

The gin selection is extensive but the tonics and garnishes didn’t match this. Gin is so popular these days and people expect the perfect serve, not just ice and lemon.

All the indications on the menus and the bar state a 10% discretionary service charge will be added. We were charged 15% and, whilst it was paid happily, the signage should reflect this.

Nonetheless, a fantastic experience and one of the most dog friendly place we’ve ever stayed.

Thank you Julian, Lisa and your lovely team for the card and for a wonderful stay for my birthday. We’ll see you again.

Had a fabulous 2 night stay at the Bearslake Inn this week, just me and my dog exploring beautiful Dartmoor. Absolutely loved the accommodation with its thatched roof, low ceilings and tradition beams! Very traditional, very beautiful and very ‘English’!

The room was spacious, comfortable and had everything we needed. I loved that the room we stayed in (a family room) was separate to the main hotel and had its own entrance leading onto the beautiful garden.

The grounds are stunning with a lovely stream running through the garden and a great dog walk just on the doorstep. The hotel location is excellent and perfect for exploring the surrounding countryside.

The hotel restaurant is currently closed Mon-Tue so we weren’t able to try the food but we were made aware of this before booking and it wasn’t a problem. The bar area was gorgeous though so look forward to returning to try the food sometime soon!

Overall, a fantastic stay in a really beautiful thatched country inn. Would highly recommend. It’s also very dog friendly and I really appreciated that Teddy was made to feel so welcome!

Thank you for a really lovely stay.

It was an absolute pleasure to stay, eat and relax in this wonderful Dartmoor pub.

The setting was stunning, the pub authentically and beautifully furnished. Our room was spacious and well equipped and overlooked the moor with a busy stream running through the grounds.

The staff were friendly and efficient, the food was varied with an emphasis on fresh local produce, and the range of alcoholic drinks reflected the pub’s commitment to fostering the growing diversity of local brewers and distillers.

Overall our short stay here was the highlight of our trip to the South West and we can genuinely recommend the Bearslake Inn to any visitor to the area.

Well done to all the staff and especially Poppy, the West Highland Terrier, who acted as Maitre D’ during our stay.

A gem of a place. Setting is beautiful. We arrived early and a few miles down the road was a great walk. The menu was interesting and the roast beef was delicious (forgot to take a picture) and the chicken liver parfait very tasty. The Fruit and Nut dessert was to die for! If you enjoy saving on blanc the new Zealand one is light, fresh and very drinkable.

Yes & No, The phone signal in the area is poor & the Bearslake has thick walls. However the pub offers free WiFi so we use, WiFi calling and regain full functionality.
