We enjoyed a two-day break in the heart of Exmoor at the White Horse. The room was comfortable and warm with good facilities in the bathroom and decent wifi. Plenty of information was provided about walking and driving routes on Exmoor: the village of Exford is ideally central. The food was too good, our good intentions to not over-eat were not kept!

My wife and I booked a mini-break to go walking on Exmoor for Valentines though we stayed at the Inn on a Monday night before the actual Day when I was going to be away.
Nothing was too much trouble; there was a warm welcome and we ate in the cosy bar choosing a starter off the bar menu and our main courses off the restuarant menu. We chose the venison tenderloin which was exemplary. We had a large dog with us so felt it more appropriate to sit in the bar with its tiled floor than in the more "posh" restuarant. The room was very comfortable and the full English the next morning was simply the best ever and used locally sourced ingredients. We will be returning when the weather will be more favourable. We suffered the tailend of Strom Ciara so had severe gusts of wind and sleet on our walks.

You may ask why "A Five Star Stay"? the answer is that during our two nights in this fabulous country Inn, we felt the staff went above and beyond the call of duty to make it as pleasant and enjoyable as possible.
How did they do that? Well quite simply, we were delighted with our Room 19 on the first night. The bed was comfortable, the furniture was antique but in superb condition, and although the room was small, the warmth of the honey coloured furniture, bed spread and curtains gave the room a wonderful cosy and welcoming ambience. It had a large bathroom too.
But it also had a constantly yapping dog in the adjacent room, the owners of which we assumed were in the bar downstairs. After some 40 minutes plus of this, a call to reception, and within five minutes the dog was quietened (not permanently, I hasten to add.)
But here's the exceptional bit. Next morning after breakfast, we were informed that we were to be moved to a larger bedroom, that didn't have any dogs adjacent to it, and which would be very quiet. This Room (room 9) was in a slightly different style, but was very large, homely and superbly maintained with a larger, equally comfy bed, and a large bathroom. They didn't need to move us. We certainly didn't seek to be moved, and we hadn't heard the do again, after the initial yapping. Yet the hotel staff had come up with a solution to what may not have been a problem, to ensure we had the best time. Amazing service!
Staff throughout were superb. Food was excellent and we dined in the bar both nights. Great beers, and wines, and an incredible 180+ selection of malt whiskies to choose from. Exford is a delightful, quiet Exmoor village, and the White Horse really is a charming place to stay. We will stay there again - in any room!

Went for a birthday dinner and was very disappointed with the food. The restaurant menu was limited so ended up eating from the bar menu which was typical pub food. The vegetables were almost inedible and I suspect reheated from the lunchtime sitting. I chose the hotel as it had Tesla destination chargers which were turned off and had local’s pickups parked in the charging spaces. I won’t be returning.

Please note that Charging points do need to be reserved in advance, ensuring that they are accessible and for businees reasons (only free to use if eating at the premises) and safety etc we are sure you can appreciate that we do not leave then constantly turned on. And you can be assured that we not "reheat" as stated in your review. Any customer that is unhappy with their food simply needs to let us know and we will always go out of our way to put things right. We can only apologise for failing to meet your expectations

Had a great meal - if you sit in the bar, you can also select from the restaurant menu. Good Covid measures still in place which was reassuring - menus cleaned before being given to next customer and tables marked they have been cleaned and ready for use. Very friendly staff.

Stopped for lunch on a Monday. Sat by the river and had a beer (fine) while we ordered lunch. One Roast beef and horse radish sandwich on brown and a steak and ale pie. My wife, not one for complaining remarked that it was maybe the worse sandwich she had been served. Only one side of the slightly stale bread buttered, the meat inserted sans horseradish sauce (provided in plastic sachets) and served with the remains of a crisp packet. No garnish. My pie was okay but I am being kind here.
It staggers us that the hospitality industry just does not seem to get it. It’s really not that hard.

We can only apologise for your experience and once again can only reiterate to any customer at any hospitality venue that it is far better to complain at the time so that we can have the opportunity to rectify any issues. By leaving feedback such as yours, all we are able to do is apologise. We try our hardest to provide quality food and service and hate the thought of anyone leaving here dissatisfied in any way. The hospitality industry has been on its knees the last 18 months and whist we are trying our harest to bounce back as best we can, a little thoughtfulness and understanding from customers, whatever the issues, will go a long way. Be assured that your comments will be passed back to the kitchen but please allow us to clarify a few points - the crisps are not "remnants of a crisp packet" they are bought in specifically for our kitchen. The reason the horseradish was in a sachet was that we find some people order the Beef sandwich bot don't actually like the Horseradish. And with regard to your Steak and Ale Pie we are completely surprised as this is one of our best sellers and people return again and again for Chefs Homemade Steak & ale Pie. Whilst we cvompletely understand that everyones tastes are different, you are most definitely in the minority. Once again, please accept our apologies.

We very much enjoyed the Exmoor White Horse Inn, from the welcome at reception, to the friendliness of the staff, the food and the location, all of which were superb. Our room on the 2nd floor facing the front was large bright and very well appointed. We were on a four night break and decided to eat at the hotel on the first night. Despite a small hiccup with the starter ( I had informed the hotel of a severe intolerance to the onion family which was acknowledged by the waitress, when it arrived there was onion mixed in with the salad and when this was pointed out, the waitress apologised but no further action was taken), despite this the rest of the meal was very well presented and extremely tasty. Due to regulations, we had to book a breakfast time which was a little inconvenient, however, the breakfast covered everything from continental to full cooked breakfast options and lashings of tea or coffee. All in all a traditional hotel in a lovely location with plenty of sightseeing options within easy reach and a very welcome break.

Thank you so much for your lovely feedback and please accept our sincere apologies for the issue with the onions, the dish should have been removed from your table as soon as we were made aware of the problem. You can bea ssured that we will be talking to all the staff concerned as we take all food allergy issues very seriously. We have double checked to make sure that the onion allergy is clearly noted on your history so if you decide to return, which we really hope you will, the note will always be highlighted on your reservation. We really hope we do have the chance to welcome you back to Exmoor

Had a one night stop over en route to Devon.
Cant speak highly enough of the friendly helpful engaging staff particularly Emma on reception and Chloe in the restaurant.
Had a welcome call a couple of days before just reminding me that masks are still needed and asking what time we would like breakfast
Rooms bright and modern
Dinner and breakfast excellent
Will definitely stay again

Stayed in a luxury room for 3 nights. The bedroom and bathroom
were very spacious but there was nothing luxurious about them. They were very tired and in need of refurbishment. The zip link mattresses were too wide for the twin bed bases so the bases were set apart leaving a large gap in the middle and the mattresses unsupported. The mattresses needed replacing as they were past their best and very uncomfortable. The bed bases were stained. There were crumbs between the headboard and bed bases. There was a long hair found in the bathroom and hairs in the chest of drawers. The room did not appear to have been deep cleaned. Not very reassuring in these difficult times. Breakfast was very good. Service in the restaurant and bar was very good in the main. They had signs on the tables in the bar saying they were clean and good to go. In busier times we saw the tables cleared of glasses but not cleaned. The “good to go” signs were left in place and new customers came in and sat at the tables thinking they were clean

Quite simply all we can do is apologise for what we are sure you can see from other reviews, is definately not the normal experience herea t The Exmoor White Horse Inn. And if you had raised your concerns at the time we would have gone out of our way to rectify the issues. WE are all working under immense pressure at the moment and so we are sure you can understand that mistakes will happen, aftewr all we are all just human! But we are not making any excuses whatsoever, this situation should not have arisen. With regard to the table signs, they are only left on tables if it is cleared and cleaned. If not a Red X sign would replace it.

Just back from a great trip to Exmoor staying at this lovely hotel. We have stayed here many times before and always look forward to high standards throughout the hotel with friendly and personal service.
We were unsure what to expect in view of the Covid-19 restrictions, but the hotel have got it just right. There are plenty of precautions in place to make you feel safe without losing any of the friendly service we have come to expect. Breakfast used to be a buffet style, but this is now out, of course, so breakfast is cooked to order and it is fabulous! The full English breakfast was one of the best I have tasted, but there were plenty of other options too. The summer fruit pancakes with yogurt were a great new addition. We had dinner in both the hotel restaurant and the bar area and both were excellent.
The proprietors have used the lockdown period to good effect, making a number of improvements in the hotel and bar. In particular, the outside terrace overlooking the river has been revamped and is a great place to spend time, all taking into account social distancing of course.
A great hotel that has lost none of its charm due to the current restrictions. We can't wait to go back.
