We have stayed at both hotels before and have overlooked the outdated decor. However, with Covid still circulating we had expected more thorough cleaning in all areas. We saw housekeeping staff in accommodation blocks and clearing tables in dining hall but no where else. Surfaces or indeed toilet areas had little attention. Considering we were unable to use our room until 4pm (we were able to use hotel facilities) we had expected a higher level of cleaning. Rooms are not serviced during stay, we were told extra items could obtained from reception. Three stars is about correct considering the activities and level of service.

Craft rooms are attractive but the cost for each item produced has risen and not all items are priced. Resin Art is £12.95. Wood Scrolling items seemed to all cost £9.50. Individually this may be reasonable, it mounts up if you go to several craft activities and for families. Teaching varies.

Food was ok considering the numbers catered for. Most fish and meat comes in a sauce or gravy. There is a lot of cake but little fruit. Lunches on arrival or leaving days can be purchased for an additional £8 each. You need a lot of £1 and 50p coins, tea and coffee comes from machines in the bar area. It’s full board for food, but drinks are not included with all meals. Dining Room was marked with Covid Awareness stickers but not enforced.

The spa is great but one of the saunas was not working, and some were unlit. We did push buttons etc I didn’t feel comfortable entering in the dark,. The swim costume spinning machine has been taken away.

Evening entertainment was varied. One evening we felt as though we were in a care home with the performer tapping on a keyboard and singing songs from 6 or 7 decades ago. The quiz was good. Better to play Table Tennis or Snooker etc.

We have loved the Manor Hotel in the past, and have fond memories but in 2021 it felt outdated. There are perhaps too many old activities that don’t work properly and it might be better to concentrate on fewer and make sure they are up to scratch.

I have read through many of the posts and replies here. The Manor Hotel does indeed offer an a huge range of activities, it’s just a shame that some concerns don’t appear to be taken seriously.

Dear Chrissie Thank you for your review. You are correct that rooms are not serviced during your stay. This was introduced due to Covid-19 in order to protect both our guests and our staff and whilst we still have covid notices around we are sure you will appreciate that restrictions have now been lifted and that it is up to individuals as to how they respond to the current situation. We are now asking guests to wear masks when walking in the dining room and to sanitise their hands before proceeding to the buffet. With regards the crafts we have not raised our craft prices but introduced additional crafts for which the materials are slightly more expensive. That said we still offer excellent value for money and should you try these crafts out elsewhere you will find that they are considerably more expensive. We are sorry to hear that there was an issue with the sauna, unfortunately with the scale of facilities at the resorts we do, occasionally, have maintenance issues but am pleased to confirm that most are usually resolved as soon as we are notified of the problem. Customer service is very important to any hospitality business and would like to reassure you that we take any concerns very seriously. Once again, thank you for your review.

We arrived for a Sunday to Thursday break. We were called a week before to see if we would like lunch on day of arrival which we booked.
Check in was easy we had lunch and signed up to an afternoon craft class all before even taking our Suitcases to the room.
All the craft classes were great and if we couldn’t get into one thing we booked another every thing we booked was fun and different and it was entirely up to you how much or how little you did.
The food was brilliant and plenty of choice and no tiny portions.
All staff were fantastic especially Duncan who was with us for a few activities.
The whole place was so clean and tidy was great and the views were breathtaking.
We also booked lunch on the day if leaving and made use of the facilities all morning and another craft class
Helpful hints from a first timer who will be returning.
Tea and coffee during the day 1.50 bring change
If doing pottery day one don’t book anything till after 3 in the afternoon
If doing pottery painting bring your own brushes (if you like doing fine detail)
Craft materials vary session to session but work on average £10 and you won’t be far wrong others are less most expensive thing we did was £12.50
Go with the flow and don’t be afraid to sign up to something different if the thing you wanted to do is full
Overall we found this a wonderful experience for 3 generations (mum 70 me 43 daughter 23)

Been here several times at this time of year for a national competition, teams meet up for an annual snooker competition meeting others from all over England.
We loved it here as the men play snooker we are normally spoilt for choice on what to do with our
spare time , but post covid I must say the amount of activities you put on was very poor, absolutely no beauty / massages available at Ashbury site , although you put on a minibus for transport to the Manor House site it’s not really reliable and can fill up quickly.. you say you are increasing prices in the activities this year ( first increase for a few years )
Personal this isn’t true as prices have definitely increased this year as you are charging for stickers and other things you need to make and design the items, this can work out highly expensive if your a family with a 2/3 kids
The food this year wasn’t no where near standard that we’ve had in the past. Our room in west view was one of the refurbished ones so no complaints there , always lovely and warm , nice comfortable beds and clean with good quality towels.
Last year post covid we never had our rooms cleaned , albeit I look after that myself and we did see housekeeping staff to swap towels and empty bins , this year we never seen any sign of cleaning staff so had a small bin which was overflowing by the time we left after a four night stay . Bin outside the block would be nice so we can at least empty them ourselves, and extra bags to change .
I’d imagine we could of asked at reception for clean towels but on this occasion we managed to get by, so come Ashbury up your game and remember it’s out of season in February but there was enough of us to warrant a good activity programme….
Bar…, carling at times awful , minutes after pouring it looked like it was left overnight, absolutely lifeless, yet once swapped it could be ok , maybe new glasses as the widget at the bottom of the glass on some glasses was worn !!
Hopefully next year we’ll see improvements !!

Thank you for your review. You were part of the large group booked in for the Snooker tournament and the activity programme was designed to reflect this. We are sure you will appreciate that for the number of guests staying who weren't involved in playing snooker it was not practical for us to offer an extensive programme at this time. That said if you had advised your group leader of any specific requirements he could have liaised with us and we would have reviewed what we could offer. Our minibus service between the resorts is very reliable and all the facilities of both resorts can be used by our guests. With regards our craft prices, there has been an increase however this is mainly due to the new crafts we are now offering which are more expensive. We are continually trying to increase and alter the range of activities we offer in the craft centre but when the specific craft is more expensive it will be reflected in the cost of the materials. Your comment regarding the food is a little surprising as this is one area we are frequently complimented upon. Rooms are not serviced during short stay but this information is sent out to the group leader prior to arrival and in addition is displayed on our website. Your comment regarding the beer has been forwarded onto our General Manager at Ashbury for him to review. It is unclear from your comments whether you discussed any of these issues with us a the time of your stay. We are sure you will appreciate it is difficult for us to resolve issues about which we are not made aware of at the time.

Arrived on the first day and me and my partner didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. The whole place is so run down, I’ve never seen anywhere like it. The bedroom is seriously dated and small, the hairdryer didn’t work and there is a massive crack on the bath covered by some old duck tape. We wanted an iron an some clean towels, we had to walk down to reception with our old ones to change them and collect the iron and the ironing board ourselves and carry it up stairs etc. The food was absolutely repulsive and cheap. We could not eat it and was left hungry, on the second day we went to the shop and stocked up on sandwiches etc. Would not recommend this place to anyone. One positive is the activities are good for children.

It is unclear from your review whether you reported your concerns at the time of your stay, it is very difficult for us to resolve issues that we are not made aware of at the time. Your comment regarding the catering is very surprising as this is one area in which we are frequently complimented upon. Without specific booking details we are unable to investigate the issues you mentioned regarding the room.

If you're looking for an authentic experience of hotels in the 80s then look no further. Tired and dated accommodation sprawled across a large site. (Not clear how planning approval was given) Maintenance and routine tasks clearly not done.
Examples include Plaster of Paris which had fallen from wall due to what looked like ingress of water left for days, smell of sewers at either end of site, general inattention to detail.

A good 5 minute walk from the extremities to reception so would recommend asking about where on site you'll be staying if walking is a problem.

The claim of being the largest sports and activities hotel doesn't ring true on visiting.Technically accurate but with the sister hotel being a decent trek away, not really a plus for most guests.

Room was okay. Not very clean, found a large toenail on carpet...and it won't get any cleaner during your stay as seemingly no-one empties bins or restocks tea and coffee etc.

Food was good, plenty of it and always something to look forward to. However, dining as an experience wasn't great. I found myself laughing at the size of the dinner plates. Clearly designed to enforce portion control, it does nothing other than encourage people to go for multiple trips. Alan Partridge would definitely have taken his larger 12 inch plate! Same goes for the tiny water glasses, I assume an attempt to increase bar sales. Mysteriously the coffee machines which work at breakfast don't function at lunch or dinner. It just gives the impression of being mean and mistrustful of guests.

Activities were good. Some of the equipment and facilities are really excellent. Others not so much. Same could be said of the instructors, some enthusiastic and engaging but most looked like they'd rather be some place else. A fair few activities like curling and pedal cars could have been self-serve, presumably not due to the health and safety brigade?
Booking system is entirely paper based and chaotic. No wonder so many guests are "no shows" when cancelling an activity is a 15 minute job - obviously dependent upon how far in the warren of corridors you happen to be.

Appreciate there's a lot of new staff after lockdown so it should improve quickly. Jobs like locking doors at night not done nor was car park gate closed at night. If you're not feeling gracious then book in a year or two.

Dear Mike Thank you for taking the time to post your review. Firstly, we would like to say that it is a shame you did not take the General Manager up on his offer of a face-to-face meeting. He spoke to you over the phone to arrange a convenient time to yourself and you said you would get back to him. He heard nothing more from you. We are a large complex spread over an area which allows us to offer the incredible range of facilities and activities to our guests. There is no way we would be able to offer such an extensive range if the site was not large enough to accommodate it. Guests are more than welcome to ask for a central location and when booking our guests are asked if they have any specific requirements that need to be taken into account. We do not claim to be one site and clearly promote that the fact that we are two hotels, two miles apart however the Manor House hotel has all the facilities that the Ashbury has except the golf courses. It is a short drive between the two resorts and we also offer a courtesy bus to our residents. With regards housekeeping we advise our guests that we are currently unable to offer housekeeping once guests have checked in due to Covid-19. However, our pre-arrival email that you received does state that you can replenish room supplies by asking at our reception desk. Your comment regarding our catering is a little surprising as this is one area we are frequently complimented upon. The size of the plate is completely irrelevant as you are welcome to visit the buffet as many times as you would like. Smaller plates have, in fact, assisted in reducing the amount of food waste. Your comment about coffee machines is incorrect as we do offer coffee with both breakfast and evening meal. We offer a full board basis, not all inclusive. With regards our activities we have assessed those that can be run by our guests and those we feel need to have an instructor present - pedal carts and curling come under our risk assessment for providing supervision. Our activity booking system is currently under review and we are working on an App to replace the current system. We have a working security system in place during the evening. We have security cameras in place and 2 night porters who work patrolling the premises. In fact we had already noted that a guest had been walking around the hotel during the early hours and it proved to be yourself so we certainly do not have a security issue. The doors you mentioned were fire doors which, obviously, cannot be locked in case of an emergency. Our staff have been working very hard since re-opening and despite the challenges the hotel has been operating as efficiently and professionally as possible to ensure all our guests enjoy their breaks. Once again thank you for your review.

I’ve been coming to this resort since I was almost 9 years old and I’ve never been bored nor found the facilities unsatisfactory. I think I have gone here around 7 times, and every single time there have either been new task and facilities to enjoy through the stay, just like the brand new mini golf is absolutely AMAZING.

The food served is a solid 10/10 and if I could I would stay there all day if it wasn’t for all of the enticing activities drawing me out to go and enjoy my day.

If you have young children or are just wanting a lovely little getaway I would definitely recommend you go here for all around fun and an amazing atmosphere for a brilliant price!

The mixture in facilities of this hotel is second to none, there is something for everyone so ideal for families with a mix of hobbies and ages. However, the hotel itself is extremely outdated and requires modernisation. The activities mean it could be ideal for all ages but the decor suggests otherwise. The carpet and artex walls look as old as the building itself and the rooms look tired and depressing.

The approach to booking activities is also outdated, and with emphasis on no shows to activities, this could so easily be fixed with an online booking system which sends people a reminder of which activities you are doing, and when, it would also reduce the risk of double bookings. For anyone who doesn't like to use technology, there is an activity desk where people could potentially book in person anyway. The amount of paper they must get through with having to print every activity sheet and then photocopy it is ridiculous and unnecessary. The system is also unfair. If there is a particular craft that you know you want want to do prior to arriving, make sure you arrive early as the spaces get filled up very quickly and there is a chance you could miss out altogether. (Obviously a digital system could make it easier for people to book..) It's also worth noting that some crafts require you to collect the creations the day after so make sure you don't book anything that requires overnight drying on the last day of your visit.

The food was very much like school dinners... nothing appetising and it was definitely quantity over quality.

In terms of value for money, it's certainly not cheap. Yes, there is a lot included, but for the state of disrepair, you would expect more for your money. The crafts often cost more (perhaps between £5-£15 each) and the materials would have been cheaper from a high street shop (yes, I know you pay for the experience but isn't that why you pay extra for the overall hotel cost?) The spa is included which is great but again, it looks a bit sorry for itself. So you are paying to access lots of activities, but all that look about 100 years old!

Also, the website listed that most things were cashless, but you actually need a £5 cash deposit for a lot of things and there is a sneaky £1.50 charge for the onsite cash machine so make sure you take cash!

It's a shame as the hotel is unique in its offering, but it lacks any visual appeal to the modern day generation, just some basic improvements could make it so much more appealing to return.

Dear Beth Thank you for your review. We do pride ourselves on our extensive range of facilities and activities and it lovely to hear that you enjoyed them. We also have an extensive rolling refurbishment programme. We are sure you will appreciate that with a resort of this size it takes a considerable amount of time to ensure areas are updated. With regards our activities we are currently working on an App but due to the incredible range of activities we offer this is not a simple task. Your comment about food is very surprising as this is one area we are frequently complimented upon. Our craft products still offer excellent value for money and we have done extensive research in this area to ensure we offer great value for money but still covering our costs. We have to disagree with your comment about the spa, it is extensive and modern and is certainly not in need of updating. The cash machine charges are from the bank and not the hotel. We do not benefit from the charges and it is the only way we are able to provide this facility for our guests. Once again thank you for your comments.

We visited six years ago. The number of activities on offer is good. The last time I came for a break, our party took part in several different activities as well. My favourite activity is the t shirt design. The hotel is good and the variety of food is nice too. I recommend this hotel for families in particular. There is so much to do during your stay. Rooms have amenities like a telly etc. For business travellers, there are a few meeting rooms and the Internet.

I fondly still remember the very first time I came here. Tip, check out the information on the website prior to your trip. For those of you who are sports or fitness lovers, there is a pool and gym onsite as well as different sport activities in addition like golf and tennis. Families will also be happy to know that there is lots of popular family entertainment at night, a creche and a play area. Bowling is available on site for bored kiddos who need something else to do. Also the old arcade machines are a source of distraction and relief for tired parents.

There is even a spa. Solo travellers can have a nice body massage and check out the spa in addition. Additionally solo travellers can even go for quick walks and use the hotel as a base for exploring the area nearby. This is the perfect place for a short getaway. The hotel is situated in the scenic Devon countryside. I recommend bringing some old spare clothes in case. You can also hire a car if you wish to do so. The hotel reception desk should be able to provide information on local walks and things to do and see in addition. Solo travellers may wish to bring a white noise machine or earplugs to use when sleeping at night.

Worth the long drive totally. It was money that was not wasted at all. Far from it. Just make sure to research the area carefully in advance before coming so that you can make the most of your vacation here. Views from the dining room are splendid, you can see the golf course from the windows as you eat breakfast or lunch. All in all we had a great time. My advice is to make short notes so you are not overwhelmed by the amount of information.

Went for a family weekend away and had no idea what to expect but was pleasantly surprised.
It’s a mad place and hard to explain but I’d say it’s a mix of a caravan holiday park meets hotel meets a school haha.
Definitely good value for money as all meals are included. It’s a buffet offering but with decent hearty food and plenty of options. Coffees, teas and water included during meal times but any other drink is chargeable apart from apple/ orange juice in the mornings.

The list of activities is completely overwhelming. Every sport under the sun and craft classes too. The sport activities were included (just some deposits taken on equipment like balls/ rackets but refundable on return). Everything is booked so get there early to have the most choice, more slots sometimes get added if somethings popular. Craft classes are chargeable but reasonable. We did the resin art seascape at £12.95 which we really enjoyed. We stayed at the manor hotel site and this had 2 pools, one with slides for kids and the other more of a relaxing spa area. Most things are indoors so it’s good for this time of year and all sports facilities are pretty well looked after. The scale of the place is just huge.

Our room was basic but clean. This but reminded me most of staying in a caravan, very similar aesthetic but did the job for a bed to sleep in. Our room was pretty cold even with the radiator on but we got a 2nd duvet and this did the job. Shower was decent but there wasn’t always hot water which is a pain when it was so cold in the room too. This was the only real let down and you definitely come here for the activities not the luxury!
The rest of the hotel is quite dated but the value for money really does outweigh that. We paid £180pp for 3 nights, can’t complain at all with all meals included and we did about 10 activities. Great place for kids they would certainly never be bored.

On the whole I would definitely come again but it would depend on price. It’s definitely not worth some of the summer prices I saw but off season is good value.

We have been coming to the Ashbury and Manor House Hotels for over two decades and they only get better and better. The accommodation is clean and comfortable if stuck in a 1980s time warp - but that isn't why we keep coming back. We keep coming back for the numerous activities, most of which are free: so many to mention but last weekend we enjoyed archery, pistol shooting, rifle shooting, pyrography, the relaxing hydro spa and swimming pools. The list of sporting and craft activities available is endless. The buffet food at breakfast, lunch and dinner suits me as I have to eat gluten free so I can choose what I want and the menu is marked up for a wide range of dietary needs. Tennis, Golf, Badminton, Bowls, Ice Skating, Cycling and many many more. And charging facilities for our electric car....

Depends what you want to do. There is no creche or babysitting but a lovely soft play area, swimming, outdoor playground, mini golf etc. Both can do the bisque painting. There was a bird of prey show one year we went, and a creepy crawly animal show another year. I honestly can't imagine anyone getting bored.

You can't book in advance, ie before arrival. You got the notice boards on the day/day before and check available sessions and put your name down. Don't expect to have spaces available on any activities for your whole group at once. Be flexible and certain activities require adult supervision (ranges and swimming pool for example). Other than that let the kids go off and do their own thing (dodge ball, football, games rooms, big soft play area, mini golf etc). It is a very safe place.
