Detailed Reviews
We have just returned from our first holiday following many weeks of lockdown and it was the most perfect week in Tractor Barn at Devon Country Cottages. Our main aim was to relax and enjoy a change of scene, but this was so much more. Yes it was super relaxing, particularly the gorgeous jacuzzi at dusk as we watched the sun set over the valley, but it was also reinvigorating to be in the middle of the countryside, taking walks in Dartmoor, around the town of Lifton, on the wonderful Granite Way or playing in the river just a few minutes walk from Tractor Barn itself. Sylvia, Kristian and their children could not have been more welcoming or helpful and were full of great advice as to where to go for a family beach day or what local pubs to try for a delicious meal. Sylvia had even made a dairy free treat for us and left a vase full of beautiful irises plus fresh eggs to greet us on arrival. Tractor Barn had everything you could want from a 5* holiday cottage. We all slept really well in the duck down duvets, the towels were plentiful and soft, there were White Company toiletries and the kitchen was really well equipped even having clingfilm/tinfoil, cleaning products and laundry pods. We have returned refreshed and full of wonderful memories. Our boys (11 and 13) loved the freedom they had around the Barn and just being outside in the fields or the river. My husband also loved the Weber barbecue, while I enjoyed the lovely view from the terrace. All in all it was a superb week away and so much so that we have returned home today and immediately booked to return for a week in a few months time! We are so happy to have found this haven not too many hours from home. See you soon DCBs!
I should also add that I was very impressed with the care taken by Sylvia and the family to ensure a safe stay for us all. Everything was very clean and sanitised. There was hand gel, masks and gloves left for us to use and the cleaners had full PPE on to clean the barn as we were leaving. Made us feel very secure on our first holiday since the COVID pandemic began.

We have just spent a week in Sylvia’s spotlessly clean barn. From the minute we turned up to a friendly greeting by Sylvia, to the home made cake, fresh eggs, and dog treats we knew this was going to be a great break. The location is fabulous and the barn is beautiful, fully equipped and spotless clean. My younger son said it was awesome and he wanted to live there. The whole property is very well maintained and there is a lovely stream to paddle in. My dog loved running around the fields and we spent many an hour in the hot tub (even in the rain!).
I can honestly say I have never stayed in such a well equipped holiday property and would highly recommend it - they have thought of everything and work very hard to make your stay enjoyable.
I always take cleaning products with me if I stay in a holiday cottage (sad I know but I have needed them before) and this is the first time I have not had to use them. It was always very welcome to have dishwasher tablets, cling film, washing up liquid etc for use throughout the stay.
We all relaxed and enjoyed our time at Apple House - thank you x

Well what a special place. Lovely retreat with super views of the valley. Our welcome included a blueberry lemon cake, tea/coffee, milk, wine and roses. Our two dogs were also treated to treats , a ball and poop bags …and chews.
We loved the cottage…lovely and cool with the tiled floor. Our favourite space was the snug… great for jigsaws and the log fire was welcome on the cool evening.
A hot tub with a view 🥰
Beds were comfy and the spiral stairs is an ideal barrier for the dogs!
Loved the walk over the fields … down to the river……the ducks and chickens entertained us too. Oh the EV chargers bliss!
The owner couldn’t do enough for us.
Great farm shop 2 miles away….lemon curd to die for…you must find Tintagel brewery…..we recommend Happy Valley adventure park, Valley garden, our favourite dog beach was Travarwith Strand.
What could be different? Struggled with the shower curtain and a shelf for bottles/soap, enough space to shower without flooding the floor…a really minor issue.
Thoroughly recommend!

From the moment we arrived, we knew this was the perfect place for us. We had chosen Orchard Barn for the two of us and our two dogs.
After a long drive, we were welcomed into this idyllic home, with flowers, home made cake, milk, wine and fresh eggs.
Sylvia is amazing, and made our stay perfect.
Two lovely large enclosed fields, one with a stream at the bottom, were perfect for the dogs.
The location was ideal for exploring Devon and Cornwall and the barn was the perfect place to return after a busy day walking.
The hot tub and roll top bath made the stay even more perfect.
The only down side of our stay was leaving. However we have booked for a longer stay next year a d if I have my way, we will be back again sooner
Thank you Sylvia for your wonderful hospitality. We are missing the peace and tranquility already 😢

I rarely ever write reviews but felt compelled to do so, after our stay at the charming Orchard Barn.
To echo others’ comments, it really is the perfect getaway. It is an idyllic location, perfectly placed to to explore the natural and historic surroundings of West Devon and the barns themselves are so beautifully arranged and in a peaceful setting.
A delicious homemade cake, fresh eggs, milk, freshly cut flowers and a fabulous bottle of red greeted us upon arrival, with a very welcoming host. Sylvia was super quick, efficient and helpful for any queries we had - her children are as wonderful too.
The barn itself is perfectly equipped and we enjoyed relaxing in the private hot tub, whilst watching the sunset.
Our daughter collected eggs one morning with Sylvia and returned with a fantastic goose egg for breakfast!
We were sad to leave this morning after such a wonderful stay...but we’ll definitely return and cannot recommend Devon Country Barns highly enough.

We have just returned home from a perfect stay at Devon Country Barns. We booked this as an alternative to Cyprus due to Covid, and were not disappointed.
As soon as you arrive, the setting of the barns makes you feel like you have picked the right place for your stay. Sylvia was were there to welcome us and make us feel at ease, introducing the barn and telling us all we needed to know. We stepped into the barn and immediately it felt like home.
The decor was perfect, complete farmhouse style with modern kitchen appliances and everything you could need provided for you. A lovely welcome pack, inc sanitiser, masks, dog treats and a ball, (not to mention the homemade cake!) was the perfect start.
The bedrooms were spacious, well decorated and comfortable. We slept so well in the luxurious beds and all bedding had a hotel quality feel to them.
The bathroom was beautiful and clean. Always hot water available, and big white fluffy towels provided. As well as The White Company miniatures.
The hot tub and garden were immaculate and a very welcome addition. Sitting in the hot tub, watching the sunset with the rolling fields in front of us, became an easy daily occurrence. Completely dog friendly garden to let our little one roam, as well as our 3 year old too.
Six friendly chicken would appear at your door for a treat or two, which was very much our sons entertainment throughout the stay, and Sylvia also kindly invited us to feed the other geese and birds with her on a daily basis.
A real home from home and we can’t wait to come back!

What a superb find this cottage was. Our family of 4 (and 2 Westies) have recently returned home after a fabulous week spent in Cow Barn. The barn is in a beautiful setting and had an awesome view of the surrounding countryside. Sitting up by the apple tree with a glass in hand and just soaking up that view was delightful (sitting in the hot tub looking out was nearly as good).
The cottage was homely, spotless and very well equipped. The Nespresso machine was an absolute bonus as I had begrudgingly left mine behind.
It was lovely being able to take the dogs straight into the fields and down to the pretty stream, they absolutely loved their holiday. They explored right around the field whilst we played cricket or rounders. It was all dog proofed. Such an array of flora and fauna to enjoy at the property - we saw a Kingfisher and fish in the stream there are chickens, geese, kittens, pippistrelle and Daubenton bats and we even had sheep put into the field right next to our cottage. I was in my element.
Sylvia was a brilliant host and extremely welcoming and it was lovely chatting with her when we saw her out and about around the grounds. She really does a great job with great attention to detail but definitely not intrusive in any way.
Highlights of our week (other than just sitting chilling) were Dingles Heritage Fairground (our boys of 14 and 11 and a very excitable dad absolutely loved it), Lydford Gorge river trail, the Jamaica Inn smugglers museum and dog friendly restaurant and the drive over Dartmoor seeing the cows, ponies and sheep roaming free against the stark contrast of Dartmoor Prison! Wow.
We had a great curry takeaway from Sagor Tandoori and great Chinese takeaway from Launceston. The farmshop is brilliant and you will want to buy everything!
We honestly enjoyed everything about this place and hope to go back.

We loved our stay so much in May we returned end of July/beginning of August and stayed at Tractor Barn again. We could not fault the barn at all - it was exceptionally clean and just as beautiful as we remembered it!!!
Sylvia makes you feel so welcome and nothing is too much trouble for her - if you have a problem she will sort it or if you need something that is not in the barn she will make sure and get it for you!! We stayed a week and she made sure we had further fresh towels and hot tub towels during the week and clean oven gloves!
We cannot praise DCB highly enough and to prove that we are coming back again in November. Thank you Sylvia for making our holiday so memorable see you in November xx

Our family stayed in Tractor Barn which was very comfortable and beautifully located in a quiet spot.
The accommodation had everything we needed during our stay.
Unfortunately the barn would have benefited from an extra hour or so of cleaning prior to our arrival.
We found outdoor seat pads very grubby. Sylvia did get these washed and returned but this should not have been necessary if the full changeover checklist had been followed especially with covid hanging around.
Blown bulbs in lamps, grubby coffee table, hairy plug holes, debris in rubber seal of washing machine, food debris under patio table, scrunched up paper bags in cupboard, crumbs in cupboards, greasy vases above cooker, cooker extractor hood broken, dusty voile canopy in master bedroom, mould and mildew in bathroom
A shame that the cleanliness was overlooked on shelves, ornaments, corners, cupboards and sills etc.
A little more privacy from the owners in the garden would have been welcome too.
A few simple tweaks would make this destination better.

Absolutely loved our week in Apple House - beautifully designed, stunning views (especially from the hot tub), and brilliantly appointed with everything you could wish for and more! From the moment we arrived with our two labradors to a delicious cake, fresh eggs, milk, wine, COVID-kit, and thoughtful goodies for our dogs, we knew we’d made the right choice.
Apple House is spacious downstairs with plenty of room for our dogs, it has a well equipped kitchen, a downstairs toilet, a lovely wood burner (yes, we needed it despite it being May!), and and a cosy upstairs. It was just perfect for us! The courtyard garden is a good size and softened by the planting with views to die for - simply stunning. There’s a great little walk down from the barns to the river through a couple of meadows. The picnic benches by the river provide a nice evening stop for a glass of wine while the dogs played. The owners are lovely, extremely welcoming while being relaxed and unobtrusive.
There’s tons to do in this area, we don’t know it all that well but enjoyed getting around and would recommend Sandymouth Bay, Bude for those with dogs, also lovely walks at Pork Hill on Dartmoor, Lydeford waterfall, and Belevor Tor.
We had such a great week, and will definitely be back to stay at the Barns again.
