We stayed at The George over Easter weekend for 4 nights and had the most lovely stay. The rooms were really nicely decorated and presented and the beds in the two rooms we had were extremely comfortable. Breakfast was excellent, the bar and tea area was really welcoming and relaxing with a mix of chairs tables and sofas/sofa chairs. Afternoon tea (or drinks) with various home made cakes available. The owner, Mark, was extremely helpful and nothing was ever too much trouble. We also had our pet retriever with us, he was also very welcomed with guests and staff all paying him a lot of attention. All in all a wonderful stay and a really relaxing long weekend. Highly recommend.

I booked a double room as part of a group booking for a Bridal party. I travelled down from Essex and found the hotel itself very easily. The location was great, with various shops nearby. I did struggle to find the car park at first, I put that down to my poor ability to follow my sat nav! But I did call the reception and the lady was brilliant, she stood outside on the phone to me and directed me perfectly until I managed to park my car. There are parking bays directly outside the front of the hotel, which we found was perfect for not only off loading all of our bags etc but also to park the wedding car and collect the bride with ease.

When I arrived at the hotel I was two hours early (having had a 5 hour journey, I slightly misjudged my arrival time) and came with all of my bags and bits for the wedding. The staff were excellent, they got my room ready for me so quickly, which let me get in and relax. They also were more than happy to let me leave my bags in the reception area while I put my permit in my car, and to my surprise, when I got back to the Reception area, there was a member of staff keeping an eye on my belongings to ensure they were safe which was just above and beyond!

The rooms themselves were gorgeous, so comfy and of quite a large size! Definitely enough room for two people, so even better that I had mine to myself. And the bed - it literally was the comfiest bed I've ever slept in (even better than my one at home) had such a great night sleep both nights. They also had a little kettle and some teas/coffees etc, which was great after my long drive down. I had not stayed in a hotel since pre-covid, so cleanliness was in my mind and this hotel did not disappoint. When I got to reception, they asked if I would like my room to be cleaned during my stay. We were also allowed to use their function room to take some photos, and while we were in there they thoroughly cleaned the rooms.
Breakfast was great. There were 3 different areas that you could eat breakfast, which was really good or social distancing, and also they managed to arrange a table for us to sit at as a group in our own bubble. The menu itself was what you would kind of expect from a good hotel, it offered cereals, fruit, croissants and the usual cooked breakfasts or eggs on toast etc. But, they actually let you order slightly off of the menu (if you wanted toast with eggs and bacon and beans they would happily accommodate). They cooked the eggs in so many different ways too and every single thing that I had during my stay was cooked to perfection. The food is clearly locally sourced, the Full English is delicious and they really could not be any more accommodating, bringing out more toast and tea/coffee and fresh juice.

Overall, I would definitely return to this hotel if I were to be in the area again. It was so beautiful and absolutely accommodated to all of my needs and more!

I have had the misfortune to need to stay at the George during the Covid 19 Tier 2 lockdown, for my younger daughter's wedding. I say misfortune because my elder daughter has stayed here before and told me how wonderful the food was. Unfortunately for me the restaurant and bar is closed, as needs must.

What I CAN say is that Mark smoothed the way perfectly by text and email, what I was told would be ready for me was ready for me, my room was at a perfect temperature, spotlessly clean, a faint smell of fresh paint, subtly neutral decoration, and a comfortable bed. I'm very much looking forward to staying here again with my wife after we've had the Covid 19 vaccine and life returns to normal!

We stayed at the George for 4 nights early September, and it was a lovely experience from start to finish.
The hotel has recently been refurbished. Our room was at the rear of the hotel and had been tastefully furnished and decorated, bed was comfortable, no problems sleeping, very quiet, tea and coffee making facilities with biscuits included in the room, all replenished by housekeeping each day. Bathroom had large walk in shower and was spotless clean as were all areas of the hotel.
The breakfast was beautiful and served in a lovely light and spacious room.
There is a lounge /bar area for tea/coffee, cakes and alcoholic beverages. The bar has an excellent selection to suit all tastes.
South Molton is a market town and is well situated for exploring both inland and coastal Devon. Numerous eateries are within easy reach.
The last word must be reserved for all the excellent staff at the George, always pleasant and helpful, a wonderful asset to the hotel.
We will return

This was a last minute booking as I wanted somewhere to break up the journey into Devon. I almost booked a cheap chain hotel but I’m so glad I didn’t.

The George is minutes off the main A road and is one of the tidiest and cleanest hotels I have been to.

From the entranceway, through reception and into the bar / dining room and finally to the bedrooms, all of them appeared well looked after and tastefully decorated.

The welcome by the owner and all staff I encountered was extremely friendly.

The bedroom had a very comfortable mattress, a well appointed / modern en suite and I slept really well.

I’ve just finished my full English breakfast which was cleanly presented and used top quality ingredients.

In summary, I’m surprised to find such a lovely hotel at this price point and would definitely return if I find myself in this area again as it represents fantastic value.

We stayed at the George in Septemeber whilst visiting family in town. The hotel was an amazing find, beautifully decorated, clean and the staff could not do enough for us! We stayed in one of the newly converted bedrooms and it was very comfortable, the bed was comfy and the decor tasteful.

Breakfast was delicious and served to the table, which was laid lovely and felt very covid safe!

The town is quaint and we enjoyed browsing the market, the hotels location is ideal for exploring the wider area, we had trips out to see amazing scenery across Exmoor, Lynton and Lynmouth, Westward Ho and Dulverton.

Although the George don’t serve evening meals, there were plenty places to go out for dinner just a short drive away. We managed to book up a few evenings out and then returned back the The George for a night cap!

We look forward to returning again for sure.
Excellent value for money, worth every penny.

I was part of the wedding party, mentioned in the review below, we used The George as our base for a family wedding. I can only re-iterate all the comments already made. The George is a lovely hotel and the staff could not be more accommodating. The bedrooms are a good size, even the single rooms. Our rooms had new bathrooms and really comfortable mattresses and pillows. There was a good choice of tea and coffee in the bedrooms, including a selection of herbal teas. All the staff went out of their way to help us with extra little touches to make our stay extra special whilst still observing social distancing rules. The breakfast was fantastic - with plenty of choice, including the vegetarian breakfast. Between us we tried most things! The porridge was delicious, and eggs cooked exactly how you wanted them. Good quality sausages with the full english breakfast and plenty of tea and coffee. South Molton is an excellent base for discovering North Devon and a great little market town to explore. I would highly recommend The George as an excellent place to stay. We can't thank the staff enough for helping to make it such a memorable wedding weekend for us all.

Following in on from the disappointment of the cancellation of our Autumn holiday abroad a friend recommended us to The George. I have to admit it exceeded our expectations. The Georgian exterior conceals a stylish interior, our room was particularly sumptuous and modern. The staff were friendly and helpful, the breakfast was awesome and the bar had Doom Bar and Korev on draught, a couple of my preferred tipples. The hotel does not provide evening meals but there are plenty of restaurants locally, we used the Courtyard Bistro a number of times, that is almost next door. The staff provided us with a comprehensive list of places to eat when we arrived. We were also encouraged to bring a takeaway back, if we wished with cutlery and plates being provided.
Being in the middle of town, the George Bar is used by locals, as well as guests, that makes for a good atmosphere.
The George had a very friendly and comfortable feel about it and we will definitely be returning.

We stayed at The George for 4 nights in September to celebrate our 41st wedding anniversary. Our room was perfect and the prosecco in our room on arrival was a lovely touch. The room was spacious with an extremely comfortable bed and beautiful bathroom. Tea and Coffee making facilities in the room were well stocked and replenished every day. Very tasteful décor throughout the hotel and all spotlessly clean. Breakfast cooked fresh every morning and was always delicious with plenty of fresh tea and toast. Most important was the welcome and service we received. Mark and all of his team were excellent throughout our stay. We will definitely return for another stay.

This modest but satisfying little gem has warm, clean, rooms with sumptuous beds and the sort of touches which make one feel that the owner actually gives a damn. On arrival I was met promptly and given directions to the car park at the rear after which I enjoyed a couple of pints of very well kept bitter before walking down the street to find supper in a similarly well-run restaurant. Breakfast the following morning was impeccable and left me wishing I had booked for two nights.
