The hotel is far down the path of transformation. It now presents as a modern hotel with well equipped rooms within the traditional building: great beds, bathrooms. Suites are each unique ( our party used three, all different) so be clear about your personal preferences. Hotel is dog friendly, with access to a morning walk. Hotel is very close to Knightshayes NT, and to town centre, on the Exmoor side. First rate breakfast with all options covered. In Covid times the required measures can make some things awkward or impossible (bar service, buffet) but the hotel are managing safety and service well. The service levels of housekeeping were very high, not the case with some other hotels.

We were delighted with the Hartnoll. It is quite simply a beautiful and relaxing place to spend a few days in Devon.

We stayed in a suite which had a spa bath, a huge comfortable bed, a lounge and kitchenette. The loft windows cleverly opened up into a balcony overlooking the grounds where we sat and enjoyed a bottle of bubbly.

During our stay I spoke to Claire, a kind and caring well-dressed lady who showed us to our room and helped carry a bag. I later found out she was the owner and she told me about how she had spent much time and energy renovating the building from just a shell 14 years earlier. Well she had done a fantastic job because everywhere you looked you found something beautiful. The bedrooms and hotel rooms were all decorated with great style and grace. Our room had fabulous views of the garden and grounds - all immaculately looked after by a hardworking team

We ate every night in the hotel restaurant. Friendly and attentive staff and absolutely exquisite food. We preferred sitting in the conservatory to eat, so if you want the same make sure you book your table early as it is very popular.

You can get a feel for a hotel from the other guests. Everyone we met was happy and relaxed. I don’t think we heard a single complaint from anyone during our stay. The hotel is an absolute delight and a huge thank you must go to Claire and her team for making our time at the Hartnoll so enjoyable.

We will be staying again soon.

On arrival it was clear our visit was going to be a good one.
We were greeted by friendly faces and a fantastic setting! The General manager also made him self known and was more than accommodating whilst we gave a few extra requests.
This continued with superb food when dining in the restaurant looking out onto the picturesque gardens from the conservatory.
We were worried about being catered for our dietary requirements which we soon realised wouldn't be an issue the staff were forward in providing us with plenty of options, very attentive and the food was delicious.
Our stay was completed by the very stylish room we had booked which was overlooking the fantastic gardens, it was immaculate and attention to detail had obviously been a conscious decision .
We shall be back! Thank you to all the staff at the Hartnoll for making out stay so special .

Upon arrival at the hotel we had to wait in the entrance for a few minutes until we were approached by a member of staff. Check-in took quite a bit longer than you would expect, however the staff were very friendly and seemed genuine. The room was a good size and nice enough. Both the room and the bathroom were immaculately clean. Unfortunately the heating in the room was so hot that it was impossible to sleep and the controls did not seem to do anything to regulate the temperature. To make it worse the WiFi was useless so using a mobile phone to kill some time while you couldn't sleep was impossible. I called reception sometime during the night to see if somebody could assist with the temperature in the room as it was unbearable even with the window fully open but there was no response (I would have expected a night porter to be on duty at least on a Saturday night). The next day my husband and I made our way down to breakfast just after 0930am. We ordered from the a la carte menu and although mine was very nice indeed my husband's poached egg turned up hard boiled. Since he was not enjoying it he made his way to the breakfast buffet to get some fruit instead and came back with a bowl of cereal as all the fruit and pastries had been taken and not replenished. When we told the waiter about the egg he immediately took it back and replaced it with a fresh plate quite promptly.
I intended to voice my concerns later on that morning when I was checking us out of the room and was waiting for an opportunity to be asked how our stay was, however that never happened. Although the receptionist was friendly I think it is quite a basic thing to ask your guest how their stay was. I'm not a fan of leaving negative reviews however since I was not given the opportunity to say anything I felt this was the only choice.
Overall the staff were friendly and genuinely nice, the hotel was clean but lacking in the basic comforts of good food, temperature in the room and WiFi.

We want to thank the staff at the Hartnoll Hotel for the most fabulous meal and stay on Saturday. There were 10 of us staying the night ( the rooms were delightful with everything you could posdibly want and such comfortable beds!) Katie in particular was supremely efficient when we were making the bookings, answering our enquiries and on the day looked after us so cheerfully from our arrival through to the end of our dinner. We had the River Room all to ourselves which made the whole evening. Beautifully set up with a round table we also had our own lounge with a log fire! Does this sound like heaven on earth? Well actually it was! The meal was perfectly presented at the right pace. The food was amazing. So as you can see we loved every minute. If you want an exclusive venue with outstanding food and service you need look no further. Thank you very much.We will be back!

Met family members for a late lunch, and really enjoyed the experience. Every consideration was given to the wheelchair-bound member of our party, and we were under no pressure to leave our conservatory table, even at 4:30. The food was exceptional value - hake and pheasant on the set price lunch - and very well cooked and presented. Congratulations and thanks to Nelson and his colleagues.

We stayed here with our dog in a gatehouse room number 18. Room was a bit small but ideal for the dog as we were in a separate building and our door opened directly onto the outdoors. Staff very friendly and helpful. The food is excellent both breakfast and evening meals were delicious: avocado and eggs for breakfast. Duck/venison/cod in the evening. Good car park and literally on the edge of Exmoor.

Our room was next to the stream which would’ve been idyllic lying on the bed listening to the water. However the back entrance to the kitchens and staff break area is also next to the stream so all we could hear was a mobile phone conversation and the wafting of smoke from the employee up to the bedroom.
The meal was quite good although the vegetables were tough. However the chocolate tart had obviously been made some time since and had shrunk away from the hard pastry case. The chocolate sauce was a mere scrape across the plate and the ‘fudge’ that accompanied it was three tiny squares of the hardest toffee-like consistency. My husband said it was just like a packet of toffee you pick up at a garage! Real let down especially given the dessert was nearly £10.
Breakfast the next day was rather misleading. Although it said yoghurt and fruit on the menu there was absolutely none so the continental breakfast was literally a couple of tiny pastries and some fizzy apple juice that had clearly gone off. I ordered the cooked breakfast and it should presumably come with toast yet I was never asked if I wanted any - a pat of runny butter on the table and some jam implied that toast should be arriving but never did. No wonder the dour young girl serving looked fed up. The young lad who served us was actually wonderful and engaging.
The cosy double was incredibly cramped and not cheap.
Wouldn’t stay here again as it over promises but doesn’t deliver.

We stayed overnight on a DBB basis with friends. We have lunched here as a group previously and I have stayed here before on business so we were looking forward to our visit.

Our first disappointment was our room. Our friends were allocated three rooms together on the first floor (rooms 1-3 ) whereas my wife and I were allocated a room way up in the attic which was cramped and definitely could have been cleaner!

Dinner was ok. Nelson ( who we’d met several times before) and the young lady working with him were both excellent. The food was good but expensive (especially steaks) and the mark up on wine was significant.

However breakfast was especially disappointing mainly due to the staff. We all arrived at 0845 by which time all the pastries and most of the fruits had gone. I asked for more to be laid out and was initially told it wasn’t possible as we were too near the end of service! Eventually we did get some pastries but no extra fruit and toast was handed to us personally one slice at a time rather than a rack placed on the table. Breakfast staff really were quite surly!

Another strange issue was a lack of menus. Both for evening and breakfast we were given three menus between eight of us and when we asked for more we were told (at breakfast) it wasn’t possible. I got the impression there was some severe cost cutting going on at the Hartnoll!

Our stay was close to £300 including drinks but I came away thinking it probably wasn’t worth that. It’s got some good features- some staff were great and the quality of food was fine but it seems to lack the attention to detail seen on past visits.

I’d probably want to try the local competition before I return.

Thank you for posting comments regarding your stay, we always like to hear feedback even though at times bad. We have been extremely short staffed over the last 8 months and the staff we can get are not fully trained to be working at this hotel, but we have no options and we are doing our best during challenging times. We now have a full time breakfast supervisor who will be able to maintain standards and I do apologise if this was not what it should be. Please email me directly if you wish to return to our special hotel. Claire Carter

A very enjoyable stay overall. The staff and management were very very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Food was excellent with good quality produce served in imaginative ways. Only a minor niggle or two - breakfast on our second morning was dry and not served with attention to detail as on our first day so a little inconsistent in quality also the breakfast staff that day were not as professional or friendly - had to ask for toast and didn’t get offered juice. Another minor point is that the hotel has a separate annexe which is very close to the road with road noise and entailed a wet walk in the rain to breakfast etc - personally we were not happy about this and we were offered an alternative in the main house (if you had a pet with you it may have suited better) but I think it should be made clearer on booking that you could be given rooms in an annexe. Apart from these minor points a very nice stay in a well maintained very clean small hotel.

Good Evening, Unfortunately Exeter Airport is a 20+ minute drive from Tiverton Town centre. However taxi's are available, we are also more than happy to organise on the behalf of Hartnoll guests. Best wishes, Katie
