Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Just don’t bother opening if you can’t be bothered to make it a pub. I get it’s winter, but work hard and make your offering good in the summer and scale back in the winter. No beers on draught, just the ghosts of empty pumps. Handwritten awful signs everywhere, dirty and smelly and bar main coughing over everything. Junk everywhere. I’d say this place has been awful for a while - such a shame as really could and should be brilliant. It will shut down soon.

So disappointing. Loved it last time we were here in August, but standards have fallen beyond an acceptable level. No draft beer, 'kitchen' closed at 2pm (on a Saturday!) and only sandwiches or jacket potatoes for lunch. Certainly won't be returning....

The room was not just tired, it was battle worn and included the debris of previous occupants and deserted by absent owners. To get the room serviced you have to request it. Breakfast was limited to traditional english/veggie only, but was good and served by pleasant helpful staff. The accommodation was not the standard you expect for 120/night even though it was half term. The bed was big and comfortable, but the room was eek. We didn't feel we could eat an evening meal there. Definitely would never go back there, such a shame, in our opinion with the right investment and extensive renovation it could be fabulous and with such a good location.

We had the most fabulous meal here. All tasted home made. Desserts especially fabulous, great coffee, lovely staff. Strongly recommend. Bread and butter pudding and custard especially lovely. Best meal we’ve had this holiday.

The Ilchester is not 5* luxury or haute cuisine cooking. This is solid down to earth English pub accommodation and food. Ok it is a bit tired , and breakfast a bit limited. But the rooms were clean enough, the beds comfy, the water was hot (eventually) and the TV worked on a couple of channels. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend the place. But dont expect to pay £70 per night for a couple inc breakfast and then complain its not luxurious enough.

Spent a lovely stopover at the Ilchester Arms, Abbotsbury. Yes, the rooms are tired & could do with upgrading however, our was comfortable, clean & quiet with a huge TV. Ideal for a stopover. Food in the pub was very nice & staff very helpful & friendly. Ticked all the boxes for us at a good price & with breakfast too.

We loved it here! Old, historical and not a right angle in sight but full of character. Clean room, really friendly staff, comfy beds and wonderful food and breakfasts. Great walks nearly. Recommend.

This place is truly awful. I was not expecting Windsor castle but I am astounded that hotels like this are still able to exist. If you want to stay in a tired dirty non functioning hotel where the bathroom appliances, shower/ toilet dont work and where people are banging on the locked doors after midnight demanding to be let in, then this is the place for you. Alternatively you could sleep in your car which would be newer cleaner more comfortable and probably all the facilities work.

Walking the SWCP over 64 nights and this was night 59. By far the worst accommodation of the 59!! It’s been said by recent reviewers but the “Heather” bedroom is a disgrace. There’s clearly a damp problem that the disinterested staff refute but the bathroom absolutely stinks of mould and damp, which is visible above the toilet fittings, and the wallpaper is bubbling off the wall. There are water stains on the bedroom ceiling and the whole room is a disgrace. I was offered an alternative smaller room with black mould on the ceiling, which I declined. Clearly it’s endemic! No hot water in the room (having run the tap for ten minutes) but in retrospect it was probably a benefit as it meant we could stay out of the smelly bathroom! The TV uses freeview and the controller for this was missing from the bedroom. Their excuse was “the cleaner’s probably put it in the washing machine with the linen”. Much joviality whilst we couldn’t watch any TV. The staff consistently said “we’ll make the manager aware” - this manager was totally invisible and was clearly just an excuse to hide behind. Almost all beer was off in the bar. Dinner was straight from the freezer - bland and uninteresting. Breakfast was purely a cooked breakfast - woe betide you if you wanted anything mildly healthy such as yoghurt, cereals, jams or even fruit juice! Please please - do yourself a favour and AVOID!! The saddest thing is we believe nothing will change.
