I cannot say enough about this hotel. My Wife and I recently returned from Scotland. If you are looking for a down-to-earth experience for old Scotland, this is your place. The Staff is amazing and the owner, John is a true Scottish gentleman. The building was built in 1685 so don't expect a four or five star hotel. The rooms are clean, drinking in the bar with many of the locals in the town was super fun. 40 mins drive from Edinburgh is worth the time staying at this hotel. Restaurant is very good. They go out of their way to see that you are comfortable. Do yourself a favor. Stay here if visiting around Edinburgh. You will not be dissappointed.

A group of 11 friends and I booked the coffee lounge in The Tweeddale for a little informal gathering before Christmas. We couldn't have been more pleased. The lovely staff provided plates of delicious sandwiches, lovely moist Christmas cake and mince pies. The waitresses were so kind, helpful and friendly, nothing was too much trouble for them. They also brought us regular fresh pots of tea and jugs of coffee. The staff have the lounge decorated beautifully and as an extra bonus they had put the open fire on. We all felt it was a truly 5 star service and we will definitely book again in the New Year. Thank you to all the wonderful staff.

My mum and I had a one night stay here. We had a double room and it was lovely! Very warm, comfortable bed and everything we needed for our stay. Breakfast was lovely, we were warned it was continental when checking in, but absolutely no problem for us. We dined in the restaurant in the evening and were met with HUGE portions of lovely home cooked food! The morning breakfast staff member had not turned up and left the housekeeping team picking up the pieces, The two staff members were amazing, very professional and ever so apologetic! It ran very smoothly and was perfect for our onward journey! Would highly recommend this lovely hotel and we will be back! Thanks for everything!

Creaky floorboards throughout room 15. Thankfully I'm solo otherwise anyone else in the room moving around would waken me. The evening meal was a disaster! I had "scallops" for starter, £10.95. 1 whole (small) scallop with two further pieces of scallop, seared to death! Coated in blackpudding "crumb" didn't hide the overpowering burnt taste. The carrot puree, wasn't. It was grainy. The chorizo was also "crisped" too much. Main course was Scampi...it's meant to be crispy on the outside, not all the way thro! Crisps, I mean chips, were equally over cooked. The garden peas were just warm. The accompanying small salad was crisp and fresh (as it should be). The waiting staff just said "sorry about your meal". Still had to pay in full, in cash tonight as there was no card payment available. I will not be eating here tomorrow!

The Tweedale Arms is okay downstairs if a bit old fashioned. The staff are friendly and helpful, the food is okay in the restaurant and the breakfast is excellent. Unfortunately upstairs goes from old fashioned to tatty, with threadbare carpets and chipped paint. Despite booking months in advance we got the notorious Room 14 which is definitely not okay. It's over the kitchen where the fans are very noisy and make the whole room vibrate. We had a view of a scruffy void area through a dirty window with filthy net curtains that looked like they had been up for decades. The bath is chipped, the shower barely adequate and the cover fell off the light over the mirror. Guests have been complaing about this room for years and the owners have done nothing. They should be ashamed charging £97 for this squalid little space. We won't be returning.

We are so sorry that you had a bad experience with room 14 We have spent a lot if money trying to rectify the problem with these fans - which we inherited when we took over It appeared "fixed " until recently again We have in fact spoken to the engineer today that the problem has raised it's head again Cannot say any more apart from apologise and re'iterate that we had addressed it and appeared to be fixed

Popped in for lunch today. We’ve been here for lunch numerous times over years. We were happy to see the Christmas lunch menu as we had it last December it was fabulous. My mum and I got the Christmas menu and my friend ordered from the ordinary menu. The avocado terrine was ok but didn’t taste overly fresh, mums lentil soup was ok but my friend said her arancini was lukewarm and bland. The the Turkey dinner arrived. Both our plates were different. No roast potatoes or Yorkshire pudding. A blob of heated up mash which was cold and inedible. The veg was burnt and so over cooked. My mum got 5 slices of Turkey and I only got 2. The stuffing was stone cold as if it hadn’t even been heated. It was really not nice and not much of it was eaten. I don’t know why we ordered the trifle because every thing had been so bad but how hard can it be to do a trifle. It looked liked ladled slop and I said to the lovely waitress - ‘really!’ Even she looked embarrassed and apologised even though none of the horrible food was her fault and she was very nice and helpful at all times. I tried one spoonful of the trifle bit it tasted slimy so I returned it. Heather was also fabulous and took the horrible meals off our bill. What has happened? The food used to be nice and this was the worst cold Christmas dinner I’ve ever had in my life. Then after an hour I had an upset tum.

Set in a beautiful village, we stayed on route to the Highlands and generally were a bit disappointed sadly. The service at dinner and in the bar didn't really seem particularly welcoming to us. After a very long journey we were looking forward to some good old Scottish hospitality. Maybe just an off day for a couple of members of staff. I must say the breakfast staff were lovely and happy though!
We were told the kitchen closed at 8pm, so ordered our mains before then and assumed once you've ordered your mains, you'd have the chance to order a dessert after finishing the dish. It would have been good if they would have advised us before the chef actually left the building that we either ordered now, or went without! Maybe have an option of a cold dessert where another member of staff can cut a slice of something from the fridge if Chef had left?
Rooms were fine, dated but in keeping with the building and lots of corridors and stairs to reach some! Lovely guest lounge area overlooking the Village Green with comfy sofas. Nice enough, but not great compared to other places we stayed in Scotland for similar cost.

First impressions of the hotel via the reception at the bar was a friendly traditional hotel with a quaint interior, but on being shown to the room (number9) it was over furnished with too much free standing furniture for the size of the room and as a result was difficult to manoeuvre around the room. There was flaking paint and signs of black mould below the window. The sash window did not stay open and the secondary glazing did not do much to keep the exterior noise out.
But the worst part was the night time noise. Our neighbour kept slamming his bathroom door all night and noise from the traffic outside and other noises from the corridor kept us awake for our two night stay. As a result my partner didn’t feel well enough to go down for breakfast on both mornings.
The reception for breakfast on the second morning was very slow and eventually the chef came out and asked if I’d had my order taken. Eventually the staff member came out and when another couple came into the breakfast room and didn’t understand her asking what room they were in she raised her voice and sounded irritated as she asked again, which I thought rude.
On checking out I rang the bell as no one was at the bar, then a member of staff walked right past me and went, I presume, to an office behind. I expected that he was fetching the day manager, but I waited another few minutes before going to the kitchen myself to ask if anyone was on reception to find a few staff members chatting. I could hear them from the bar so they must have heard the bell.
When someone did come to check us out of the room she seemed grumpy and after printing out my receipt just said thank you and goodbye. There was no ‘how was your stay?’ As if she didn’t really care.
I wish I’d paid attention to the few negative reviews on Trip Advisor, which are vastly outnumbered by glowing reviews. Not the friendly welcoming Scottish hospitality we have been used to. Would not recommend.

Lovely pub and staff. So helpful. Good real ales, good range of whiskies, good beer garden. Friendly locals, too. Bedroom small (typical of a pub) but very comfortable and well equipped. Proper continental breakfast is very substantial with cheese and cold meats. Will definitely stay here again.

Stayed here, I was going to the Scottish Open with my mate. After reading a recent negative reveiw, I felt the need to write my own very positive reveiw. After a long drive up from Wigan in constant rain, it was great when we got to this little gem of a hotel. When we entered the hotel, it was like stepping back in time. No Reception, so we went into the bar and was greeted to a very pleasant Scotsman Colin. We checked in with no hassle, and he helped out with a few questions we had about the area. The room was just like the rest of the hotel, a pleasant time warp, clean, warm, and tidy. We had a drive around the area and village, which is worth a little walk. Then we went for dinner. Once again, there are no frills, but the food was very good. The service from the young lady was very pleasant. The hotel is connected to a small pub, where we went for a beer which was busy due to the football. Colin was on the bar working hard and even had table service. Back to the room for a good nights sleep. Down early for breakfast. It has been mentioned that there was only a continental breakfast on offer. I was looking forward to a full Scottish breakfast. The continental was definitely sufficient in choice and freshness. Also, the breakfast lady was very pleasant chatty. She even went out her way to find some takeaway cup, so no complaints. Checkout was painless as we had settled everything the night before. The dated decor actually complements and still gives this old coach house character. There was no problem with parking, walking on the pavement surrounding area. I will definitely stay again. Kevin and Shaun
